What a whirlwind of fun this shoot was! It’s such a shame I never talk much about what actually goes into creating a shoot, and the ups and downs of putting it all together. This was probably the quickest shoot I have done to date. The schedule was timed down to the minute and I had about 11 minutes to capture the shot for the cover and one full-length shot, as Masha’s dress had to be returned to [Metropolitan Fashion] week immediately following our shoot. It was an insane 90 minutes from start to finish but we pulled it off and I am extremely happy with how it turned out. One of my favorite shots! …I just want to say that I’ve been following your work for a couple years and I always check your blog for new posts and love seeing the sneak peeks you put on Facebook and I watched your Framed interview and I’ve just been so completely obsessed with everything you do!

…The thing is, me being a completely amateur photographer, as I’ve only been dabbling for a couple years, I’m always trying to figure out why I’m attracted to a certain style of images, so that I can try and work on developing that quality in my own work when I get better. And out of all the photographers I know of and follow and am in contact with in this entire area, I honestly think your work is my favorite and I couldn’t really figure out why for a while. But I think I’ve finally understood why!

I don’t know if that makes sense but in so much professional photography, I feel like everyone looks really good, of course, and it’s always really clear images and just professional looking in that polished way, and it’s all really nice, but sometimes I feel like the people don’t really look real. It’s like they look so perfect that they almost look fake, even if it’s like portraits of people I know and I know they’re real obviously.

I think this really hit me recently when [a photographer took my portrait recently]. I’ve never had anyone take photos of me before, especially not a professional, and it came out looking cool and stuff, and all my friends absolutely loved it, but the more I, myself, look at it the more it almost creeps me out because it just doesn’t look like me. My skin is so freakishly smooth and my hair is too and it was just an interesting and eye opening experience for me.

I absolutely love how in your portraits, everyone looks flawless but not in a weird way. I like how we can always still see the texture in their hair or like in their skin and it’s amazing and gorgeous and not all just unnaturally smooth! And I think the best part is that the people you take pictures of can probably look at the portraits of them and think to themselves, wow I look great! rather than, oh man they edited so much out so I look good now! It makes it relate-able for the viewer as well as the subject and I feel like everyone can see the beauty in it!

The way you talk about what beauty is and the way your art portrays it just really inspires me and as a young photography enthusiast I feel most influenced and inspired by you, and I just wanted you to know that.
