With all my class of 2011 seniors going back to school this week, I wanted to share additional images from the September issue of [ZOOEY Magazine] that hits newsstands this month!! I am so excited, and fortunate to be working with this amazing magazine based out of Los Angeles!! ZOOEY stands for everything I base my business on – empowering young women to feel beautiful, and taking care of the environment. Be sure to check your local [Barnes & Noble] for a copy. (Seattle will have it available at the University Village, Downtown and Bellevue locations. Many California stores will also have it if you want to order out-of-state. Feel free to email me for a full list of store locations.)

This shoot was a complete BLAST to work on!! We cast our three models from over 70 “real high school teens”, and featured them in a fun, fall, “Back-to-School” editorial – complete with ALL our favorite fall trends! We shot over TWO full days around Seattle back in June, and I am so thrilled with how everything came together to tell the story. It’s meant to be a Day in the life of three friends, going back to school for Fall 2010. These are just a final selection of my favorite images. Some appear in the magazine, others were additional favorites. The editorial is a complete 20-page spread and features additional images not seen here, so be sure to check it out!!

Here’s a small blurb from [Stacy Zimmerman's] article that you can check out on [ZOOEY Magazine's Website]. More in the September issue!

PS, ZOOEY is selling some KILLER ad space for their next issue NOW, so send them an email, and get your amazing company/designs/boutique featured in this amazing magazine!! [Contact ZOOEY!] (With the launch of their first print issue this month, you do NOT want to miss this opportunity to be in their next issue!)

This was a really fun shoot – but never a dull moment putting it together. I would love to go more into depth sometime about all the work that actually goes into producing a shoot, but for now I want to share a few images from an editorial I shot for my portfolio back in June. At the end of the day everything came together quite well, and the finished results are nothing short of what I had envisioned. Beautiful girls in flow-y gowns surround by forest and fog. I just adore fog. Enjoy!

Last month (on the first hottest day of the year I think) we did a small studio shoot for [DLIST Magazine]. It’s so fun and exciting to see your work in print! Erin is a GORGEOUS model I have worked with before (years ago when I was new to shooting models, and Erin was just starting out) – so it was fun to come full circle with her. We had a great day, and I’m so excited to share the finished results!

You can pick up a copy of the magazine for FREE at tons of locations around Seattle. PLUS they just launched their Portland issue so you can grab a copy of the magazine down south as well!! (The image is in both issues – double win!!)

I’m sharing the original image as well – so you can see the importance of shooting with LOTS of space for print. Always make sure you understand the layout of what you are shooting for before you get started. In this case I knew we wanted the model off-centered to accompany a short article on the left-hand side. Plus, with cropping for print you’re going to lose a lot of image on the top and bottom, so you’ll need to make sure your subject can “breathe” in the frame. Shooting for editorial is a LOT different than portrait work because your images WILL be cropped and manipulated – versus shooting straight out of the camera.

Make sure and grab a copy – the article is all about embracing your beauty – at any size. A topic I am always focused on teaching my senior clients!!

Let me know if you have any questions!!

XOXO

PS, make sure and check out [Erin's Gulf Recovery] project. Erin is very passionate about helping the gulf and is raising money for a trip to go down there later this year! Just because the leak may be stopped – doesn’t mean there isn’t LOTS more hard work ahead. She’s really a gem – and her cause is one I FULLY support!

I met Hannah at my sister’s sixteenth birthday party last year, and was SO excited when she signed up to be a rep for us! I had a blast working with Hannah – she is a natural in front of the camera. I loved her nautical inspired outfits – perfect for the Seattle Waterfront. We enjoyed a big scoop of ice cream (well Hannah did) and laughed and enjoyed a lovely session together in the beautiful sunlight!! Enjoy!! XOXO

To book YOUR senior portraits, please contact us through our [Senior Portrait Website].
We are currently booking dates in September & October, with most of September already SOLD OUT.

Here is what Hannah had to say about her session! “Michelle is such an amazing person and photographer which made it super easy for me to feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the entire shoot! Before the shoot I had expectations but I had NO idea how much of a blast it was actually going to be! I knew that Michelle takes awesome photos but the whole experience of getting your make-up done with Jenny before and spending a couple hours at a location that you can choose is very unique and made for an awesome day! I am so pleased with my photos and its going to be super difficult to choose… So thank you so much Michelle for an amazingly fun day xoxo!” Thanks for sharing girl!!

It feels good to think outside of your normal comfort levels, push your boundaries, and be inspired in new ways. These past two weeks really had me thinking on many different levels of my life, and I decided to pull out my [Canon EOS-1V] from the closet, (yes that’s a 35mm FILM camera) – pack up a few rolls of my favorite film in my new [Kelly Moore Bag] and have some fun with one of my recent Senior Reps, Amelia.

I shot two rolls of [Kodak 100 UC] and one roll of [Fuji Acros 100 B&W]. These were my two favorite film stocks in college.

While the Kodak 100 UC (UC stands for “Ultra Color”) is a fun and vibrant film stock – I realized that it was a bit too hot on the skin tones – especially with back-lighting. It held up okay in open shade, but I would definitely settle for a more neutral tone stock (like [Kodak Porta]) for future portrait work. I was just looking up the UC online – and apparently it’s now discontinued. I still have quite a few rolls left on 35mm AND 120 (Medium Format). I guess I better save those up for a rainy day!! (I’m assuming it got replaced by [Kodak Ektar 100] – the most comparable film stock I could find online).

[Fuji Acros 100 B&W] is my ABSOLUTE favorite B&W film stock for 35mm and Medium Format. It never fails to impress straight out of the camera – and always has the best contrast – without over stopping in the blacks. Of course I stick with my general rule of thumb to over-expose slightly, creating a rich and vibrant black and white that remains a classic for years to come.

The BEST way to pick your favorite film stock is to head to your local camera supply store (such as [Glazer's Camera] here in Seattle) – and grab a few different varieties. At one point or another I’ve tried almost every film stock Glazer’s had to offer (while in college). I spent countless hours chatting with the shop employees about each kind of film – what they were best for, and went out and experimented. When you stop by, make sure to say hi to Kevin or Eddy – they’ll take good care of you!

These images were all shot with my [Canon EOS-1V] and [Canon 85mm 1.2L] (I’ve decided to keep my 85 for a bit longer).

OOOH! I’m so excited! After a couple of months of waiting, my new [Kelly Moore Bag] arrived! I chose the B-Hobo style in Gray because I could see the potential for a wide variety of uses, and wanted a crisp, clean neutral color. It was tough deciding between all the colors (and since I already have a red camera bag), I went for gray!

The first thing I noticed right off the bat is the leather is a LOT softer than the original Kelly Moore Bag. I liked this factor a loft – since softness is important to me in a bag! I immediately shoved all my camera gear inside, but quickly realized that it would not fit my 1DS series [Camera Body] straight out of the box. I just pulled out one of the dividers and switched it around so I had a bit of extra room – and voila! problem solved.

The best way to describe the features of this bag are to compare and contrast to my review of the [Epiphanie LOLA bag]. I was a bit disappointed that I could only fit TWO lenses and my body in the Kelly Moore Bag, whereas I can fit THREE lenses and a body in the Epiphanie bag. Regardless, I do like that I can get things in and out of the Kelly Moore Bag easier than the Epiphanie. If I really wanted to, I could stack two lenses on the left, but if I had a longer lens, like the [Canon 70-200mm] for example, I would only be able to fit TWO lenses comfortably.

The bag has some great features that I really enjoy. Lots of pockets, a perfect cell phone pocket on either end of the bag, and TWO straps that you can swap out easily with a clip. One is long so you can wear across your body – it easily adjusts – and the other is shorter so you can wear it over your shoulder like a purse.

It holds a selection of my favorite [Gear] comfortably. (One [Camera Body], [35mm], and [50mm] OR [45mm TSE] + a couple batteries). Plus the outside pockets were perfect for my [CF Card Case] and [iPhone]. It zips up easily with all the gear, plus enough extra room for snacks and small doodads.

I drug this bad-boy around our [Swink] event on Wednesday, and it performed beautifully!! I LOVE the fact that this bag is thin, and hugs to your body so nicely. It worked perfect for my shoot this day because I only wanted to work with two lenses, and it was easy to carry around when I wanted to streamline my gear. I would definitely recommend this bag if you are a two lens shooter, or just need a smaller bag to tote around – while the majority of your gear is stored in a bigger bag.

This bag would be perfect for concert shooters, going out to a party with friends, portrait shooters who only work with a couple small lenses, or at a wedding when you are carrying just a couple things for group shots and such. I really love the shape and feel of this bag, and it’s super fun to shoot with. Plus it’s shape is thinner (even though it’s about the same length and height as the Epiphanie Lola) and so could easily double as a regular purse, or when you are going to the beach, zoo, etc. and want to bring your camera gear – but not an extra camera bag.

In an effort to evaluate ways to keep my business and personal life “greener” on a day to day basis, I was happy to have a friend introduce [Catalog Choice] to me via my [Facebook Status]. (Thanks Michelle S!) I’ve already signed up for paperless bills for as many things as possible, but still to my dismay my mailbox was chock full of unwanted paper. Finally a SOLUTION! While yes, recycling is better than trashing those catalogs and coupons I challenge you to take it one step further.

*Collect ALL your catalogs, and un-wanted mail for a few days, weeks, or a month
(You’re going to need the info on the back when adding them to your do-not-mail list)
*Head to [Catalog Choice] & click “Find Companies”
*Start typing in one by one those catalog companies (i.e. Victoria’s Secret, Crate & Barrel, etc.)
*Complete each task and then recycle unwanted magazines and coupons

Let’s say your catalogs add up to about 5lbs of paper a month. If EACH person reading this blog (about 1,500 let’s say) does this for their un-wanted mail,
- that’s 7,500 POUNDS of paper we just saved!! Seriously, WOW. Only TOGETHER can we make a difference.

Now any more AWESOME ways to help the environment? Please share in the comment section!!
Check out Catalog Choice on [Facebook] and [Twitter]

PS, here’s another [Helpful resource] to remove yourself from unwanted junk mail. (Thanks Leo!)

Here’s another one of our fabulous senior reps with a sunny disposition!! I LOVED meeting Caitlin! She’s a joy to be around, and is super into Photography (yay!). She had her hair styled at [Swink Style Bar] before her session – love that a lot of our clients are choosing to do this. It just adds a whole new level to the “Senior Portrait” experience. Caitlin chose to have a bit more dramatic eye makeup which just made her sparkly blue eyes POP! What a fun afternoon. I hope you enjoy this session from a STUNNING senior!! (PS, I wanted to snag those adorable [Frye's] she wore towards the end of her session!!)

XOXO

Here’s what Caitlin had to say about her session, “I had such an incredible, beautiful and sunny day with Michelle! At first I was extremely nervous about getting my pictures taken because I’m so used to being behind the camera instead of in front. But Michelle completely understood and made me feel at ease with her insurance and humor. By the end of the shoot I was feeling completely comfortable and was laughing throughout my shoot. Also, Jenny did the makeup absolutely flawlessly! I’m so ecstatic with the way the photos turned out, Michelle is AWESOME!” Thanks Caitlin!!
