What did you expect? Do No Evil?

Google (who's main revenue comes from advertising) are allowed to "license" their own technology to their own trading divisions of Google around the world. This allows them to declare the profits in the a foreign territory but at the same time allows them to charge little for those rights and thus pay lower taxes in the U.S.A. They are then able to operate in low tax countries like Southern Ireland, and ship the royalties earned to the Netherlands and Bermuda. The figures are astounding. Earnings of £6.35bn in the U.K. in the last 6 years translated into a tax rate of: 0.0013%, or £8m paid to the U..K Treasury.

Sergey Brin had a taxpayers scholarship from the U.S. National Science Foundation which funded the mid-1990s research at Stanford University that helped lead to Google’s creation.

Googles contribution to U.K. charities in 2008 after it earnt £1.6bn was about £5500. And they only paid £150,000 in tax that year... Source: Sunday Times. U.K.

I don't quite get what the author is asking for though. Surely any search engine's goal is to pick out "quality" from "junk". I kinda get that we can argue about which search engine does that best (and personally I think Google do!) but you can't get away from the fact that the value search engines add is their ranking algorithm. Therefore they get to decide what "quality" is. What's the alternative?

People have the freedom to select other search engines, if they chose not to then perhaps this means that others, like me, like what Google are doing.

And did anyone work out what "Whited Sepulchre" meant?! ;-)

I certainly have no plans to work too far past my fifties, and am glad I have been saving into the ol' pension fund from the start of my career.

My plan is to pay off the mortage (another 20 years!) and then I'd want work to fit round me, rather than the other way round. I'd still be active in my 50s and 60s but without the pressure of rent to pay and a pension in place I'd hope it will be more enjoyable...?!

That said, it seems right to me that the pension age has to increase. Quality of life or no, it is the current workers who fund the state pension and there has to be a limit to how many people they can support.

But that's exactly why I am planning to fund my own retirement and I'm acting upon it now. And thankfully this option is open to us all.

Use your productive years wisely! Right, I'm off to sit in the sun with a pint ;)!

You have to ask, which nationality were in charge of the oil operations in the Gulf, I would bet that most were Americans. Their workmen, managers and directors which created the events that led to this spill.

I have to also agree with the hypocritical environmental gestures coming out of the White House. From a nation who wouldn't sign up to reduce greenhouse gases.

A few months later, Cameron suggested that NHS patient records could in future be maintained by Google.”

Why not? I think google should also have access to my credit card details, oh yeah thats right they already do and they know where I live!

I can see a new business angle for google if they enter the NHS, cost per kidney donor - sponsored listings!

About 99% of all my sales come from Amazon which the rest being made up from a few other merchants on other networks.

I'd love 30 days with Amazon but unfortunately we only get 24 hours.

I've not had much luck with getting sales from any other merchants yet.
