TEAMS of emerging game developers are being invited to sign up to one of Scotland's most exciting industry events and create a brand new digital or board game over one intensive weekend.

The window for teams to apply to be part of the fifth Moray Game Jam, which takes place from Friday 16th March to Sunday 18th March is now open. Organisers are looking for a maximum of five people per team.

Moray College UHI is once again venue for the Moray Game Jam (MGJ), a creative competition which sees teams make a game from scratch in just 48 hours. The event is organised by a partnership comprised of ScreenHI, Moray College UHI and Elgin-based games studio, Hunted Cow Studios with funding support from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

Last year, just under 100 budding game developers – many of whom were based in Moray – applied to be part of the game jam which sees teams devising a game which could potentially reach millions.

Last year's digital winners, Alan Yeats and Gary McCartan, created a virtual reality game called Pocket Sized Guns, while the board game category was won by Fife duo Alan Stewart and Martin Lumsden, with their card game entry Jailhouse Break, based on hatching a plot to escape prison.

Alan Yeats said: "The Moray Game Jam is definitely the best jam in Scotland and seems to get better each year.

"I’ve been doing the Moray Gam Jam for the last three years so winning it last year was a really amazing feeling. Winning is not the best part of the jam though. The best part is being able to see people enjoying the game you have created and playing the other games that have been made over 48 hours. Last year especially had a really high standard of game produced.

"We’ve moved on quite a bit from winning. The game itself has been ported over to other platforms including the PlayStationVR and has been demoed at PlayStation development days, XpoNorth and other events around the county."

Following on from last year's oversubscribed workshops at which all-comers were given an insight into the process and tech which could help them become the next generation of game designers, MGJ will again be offering free workshops throughout the day on Saturday 17th March. Details will be announced next month.

A pop-up gaming playground will be set up to give the public the chance to test the games the teams have been creating over the course of the game jam at Moray College UHI on the afternoon of Sunday 18th March.

Last year, a record number of applications for the 48-hour game creation were received, with the bulk of the teams citing Moray as their place of residence.

Amanda Millen, Director of ScreenHI, said: "Moray Game Jam has become one of the go-to events in Scotland for game developers. It opens doors and widens knowledge about how to get ahead in this hugely competitive and exciting creative industry.

"Scotland is a major player in the world of games development, and, with companies such as Hunted Cow Studios in Elgin, there is a vibrant scene in the Highlands and Islands region.

"The event provides a key opportunity to gain valuable experience and network with like-minded individuals and leading industry figures. I'd advise all teams thinking about entering not to leave it to the last minute as we are always oversubscribed and there's usually a waiting list of teams who'd like to take part."

Moray College UHI principal, David Patterson said: “We are delighted once again to be the host for this popular event, now in its fifth year, which has become one of the highlights in game creators calendar.”

We are delighted to announce the Moray College UHI Hospitality Team won the Employer Connections Award at the annual College Development Network Awards last night. This year the Awards was bigger and better than ever before, recognising the talent, skills and achievements of colleges, their staff and learners from across Scotland.

The Employer Connections Award sponsored by Morrison Construction focuses on the creative approaches Moray College UHI use to enhance engagement activity with local employers to support the ambitions of Developing the Young Workforce.

Our Hospitality team established the Hospitality Association Moray (HAM) in September 2016 to support industry by developing a communication network to provide opportunities for effective collaboration.

The aim of the partnership is to create business development opportunities, support skills development by providing bespoke training required by employers and continue to work with the community to bring young people, education and the college closer to industry.

One of the most significant and exciting developments of HAM has been the mentorship programme which matches an employer with the student to work together throughout the duration of the students’ studies. This was introduced to build the students confidence when working in industry and enhance opportunities for progression into employment in the local area.

Alistair Fowlie, Assistant Director at Moray College UHI said “We are delighted to win this award on behalf of the hospitality team at Moray College UHI and Hospitality Association Moray. It’s fantastic to have recognition of the work carried out through HAM over the past year and we are looking forward to continue our partnership with local industry to provide opportunities for our students and the community.”

We are delighted to announce Christopher Miller has been awarded Moray College UHI Higher Education Student of the Year.

Christopher graduated in October with First Class BSc (Hons) in Sustainable Development (Renewable Energy) degree. He decided to study with Moray College UHI part-time over 7 years while working at RAF Lossiemouth due to the online study options and course content: “the Sustainable Development programme provided by Moray College as part of the University of the Highlands and Islands suited all my requirements; it could be studied wholly online (essential when deploying overseas frequently with the RAF), covered my areas of interest (environment, renewable energy, sustainability, community development and mountain areas) and provided the skills and knowledge to enhance employment opportunities.”

Whilst working full-time, Christopher found the course extremely challenging as he was deployed throughout the years and found himself writing essays in Afghanistan, Cyprus, Dubai and Las Vegas. He felt throughout all the modules the lecturers and his Personal Academic Tutor, Donna Clark were very flexible and supportive.

Christopher also said: “overall I really enjoyed my studies and found the degree programme very interesting due to the variety of topics covered. The best part was completing my dissertation on community energy projects in Scotland. I am still continuing working in the RAF however I feel completion of my degree has definitely increased my employment prospects when I decide to leave. As well as Donna and all of my lecturers I would like to thank my wife Laura for her patience and support.”

Groundbreaking Research comes to the Alexander Graham Bell Centre

The Alexander Graham Bell Centre for Digital Health, based at the Moray College UHI campus is delighted to welcome a new tenant.

Alceli Ltd have Scottish Government funding initially for 1 year to develop a prototype in the development of proton therapy treatment for the radiological treatment of cancer.

The company, started by Director Steve Hunt - who has a background in engineering and has worked in many countries including Switzerland and Thailand - moved into the Centre in Elgin in early August have ambitions to not only design and test a new prototype but also enter the field of manufacture.

The current staff team consists of 7 employees and 1 Executive Director including 1 young apprentice. Their plan is to employ a number of young people as apprentices and the company are committed to investing in young people as they grow with an aim to build the staff team up to 50.

After looking at several locations, Alceli chose the Alexander Graham Bell Centre as the base for their ground breaking work because of its location and links with NHS Grampian and the University of the Highlands and Islands, Moray College.

Steve Hunt, Director said ‘The Centre here in Elgin is perfect for our research. The location is ideal for us and our stakeholders and being able to link with the work of the University and NHS Grampian is a real advantage for us. The facilities here in the centre are perfect for our work and I would encourage other companies to consider the Alexander Graham Bell Centre when looking for accommodation.’

Jacqui Taylor, Head of Marketing and External Relations said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Alceli to the Alexander Graham Bell Centre for Digital Health. The work of the company is a perfect fit for the ethos of the Centre and our stakeholders and reflects Morays strength as an area to develop, pilot and test comprehensive digital healthcare models.

More about Proton Therapy:

There are many advantages to Proton Therapy as a treatment of cancer. Proton therapy (PT) is the use of protons (rather than X-ray or gamma radiation). It has strong advantages over other types of treatment in certain cancers, such as brain cancers, where current 5-year survival rates are very low (~20%).

It can also reduce or eliminate the need for chemotherapy with its associated devastating side-effects, and in some cases (such as eye cancers and prostate cancer) provide a cure without the loss of function (loss of sight, impotence) caused by surgery.

PBT is an invisible and highly controlled beam that works by using pencil point precision to target a tumour. When it releases radiation, the radiation beam slows down, which allows the protons to interact with electrons allowing a release of high-energy. This high-energy is then released into its designated location (the tumour). As the beam is controlled by a physician the beam only targets the shape and depth of a tumour to allow healthy tissue to remain undamaged.

The advantages of PBT have been known for a long time, but it is still not widely used, in part due to the previously high cost of building the large and complex particle accelerators necessary.
