Back-to-school Reminders from MStar Kids

Hey MStar Parents!

I can’t believe the school year has already started! To celebrate, we’ll have a special Back to School Photo Booth in the South Lobby for students to grab those important first-day pictures. The booth will be available Sundays, September 7 and 14.

Also, mark your calendars for our annual Trunk or Treat on Sunday, October 26—it’s always a highlight!

As we head into a new season, my team and I wanted to share some helpful reminders for Mstar Kids classes so we’re all on the same page. You’ll find general reminders first, then age-specific notes from each classroom.

General Reminders

Drop-off & pick-up: After checking in, please walk your child to their classroom. A prompt pickup after service helps our team a lot.
Security tags: At times we may need to page you in service by your security tag number. Please keep it handy—or take a quick photo at check-in.
Sickness policy: If your child isn’t feeling well, please keep them with you to help prevent the spread of germs. Our classrooms are cleaned and sanitized weekly, and even more often these first weeks of school.
Communication: If you’d like to know more about what we’re teaching—Bible passages, themes, games, or songs—just email me. I’d love to share resources or recommend age-specific devotions and parenting books.
Updates: Please let me know if your family’s contact info or your child’s allergy information has changed so we can update our records.

Room-Specific Reminders

Nursery – Room A3

Please label all items brought into the nursery.
For toddlers, send a labeled water cup.

2–3 Year Olds – Room A2

If your child is potty training, please pack a labeled change of clothes.

4–6 Year Olds – Room B3 at 9am. At 11am Kinder is B2, PreK is B3.

Leave personal toys in the car.
Take your child to the bathroom before drop-off.
If drop-off is tough, talk during the week about what to expect on Sunday.
During the 11am service: new Kindergarteners go to B2, and Pre-K stays in B3.

1st–3rd Grade (Adventure Mountain) – Room B5

Class expectations: Be respectful, be responsible, be a friend to all.
Sometimes behavioral issues may require us to page you during service.
At 11am pickup, please enter the last door down the hallway, walk through, and exit the first door after collecting your child.
The first 15 minutes of service is free time—arriving during that time helps minimize distractions.
No designated snack time in this class, so please make sure your child has eaten and used the restroom beforehand.

4th–5th Grade (Bridge 45) – Modular C1

For pickup, enter through the right-hand door, collect your child, and exit through the far door to help with traffic flow.
Class expectations:
- Respect God, Leaders, and Each Other (Matthew 7:12).
- Be Safe and Responsible (keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself; take care of the room and materials).
- Stay Engaged and Participate (listen, ask questions, join in activities).
- Have Fun and Honor Jesus (bring your Bible, a great attitude, and creativity as we learn together).

Hello Morning Star Family,

Fall season has arrived! Kids are back in school & soon the leaves will turn the beautiful variety of colors we’re blessed to see in the Willamette Valley. This month we have some recaps from August fundraisers and a look forward to opportunities throughout September!

Let’s all be praying for Corban students as Corban has their annual World Outreach Week Sept 2

Thanks so much for being a part of our summer prayer walks! We had about 100 people between our 3 formal gatherings at different spots around the city, and many more walking in their own neighborhoods. We’ll have final totals ready to announce in service on September 14th, but it’ll be a few hundred miles we walked together! Well done everyone! God is at work here in Salem! We’ve seen and learned so much. Here’s the key: This doesn’t have to just be a summer event, it can be a lifestyle or praying while we walk, being in a rhythm of relationship with this Lord and communicating with Him, on behalf of the community we love! We are excited to invite you to our Fall Kick- off SFR Connects meeting on Monday, September 8th at Broadway Commons. We’re celebrating our 9th birthday and we will highlight all the incredible achievements Salem for Refugees has accomplished over the past year. Whether you’re a long-time partner or new to the SFR family, this is a special opportunity to hear inspiring updates, connect with others who share your passion for refugee support, and reflect on the impact we’ve made together. Come ready to celebrate, share, and look forward to the future as we continue building a welcoming community for all.

Lunch will be provided at 11:45am and the program will begin at 12:00pm.

Breaking Records!

304 men, women and children joined Hope at Minto-Brown Island Park on August 9th to run or walk one of our three course options. This turnout was our highest ever and we raised over $12,000. Thank you all for showing up and supporting women, babies and families in Marion and Polk Counties!

Leadership update:

Hope Pregnancy Clinic has been in the process of looking for their next Executive Director over the last 12 months to take over as current Executive Director Mike Reid retires soon.

The Hope Board has had many great interviews, conversations and prayer times as the Lord has been leading them to the right fit. Hope is thrilled with who the Lord has brought to them and it’s been more and more confirmed in recent conversations.

Jay Messenger, Lead Pastor of Grace Community Church will become Hope’s Executive Director in October and continue to work side by side with Mike Reid until the new year where Mike will be available for whatever help Jay needs.

Please join us in congratulating Jay Messenger, and all the Hope staff involved in the process to find the next leader. Let’s join in celebrating this transition of leadership and as always, continuing to pray for the great work and community impact Hope Pregnancy Clinic provides!

Global Partner – Jeremy & Mindie Tice:

Trips and camps and conferences and retreats, oh my!

This was a full Summer! Bethel graduation was the beginning of May and we had the joy of seeing several of the students we worked closely with graduate. It really hit home how small of a window we actually have with these students. Pray we are able to make every moment count for the Kingdom as we help fix eyes on Jesus!
May was busy with launching Bethel Task Force teams to northern Alaska and New Mexico. We have heard wonderful reports from these trips, with lives being blessed through the teams that went.
June gave us some time for a family vacation to the Cleveland Zoo and a special 25th anniversary trip for Jeremy and Mindie. We are blessed!
July had us involved with the Missionary Church General Conference in Fort Wayne, the World Partners Summer Retreat, sharing with elementary schoolers at Prairie Camp, and launching the Bethel Women’s Volleyball team on a trip to minister in Jamaica. We were also blessed to host our dear friend, Ezekiel, from Nigeria for several days. A bonus: two of our mentees got married!
In August we travelled to Brown City Camp in Michigan to share in their main evening service about global mission, then again in a smaller seminar the following day.

Students are now back on campus and we are excited for another school year of discipling young men and women heading into mission with Jesus! We are already planning a Fall Break Task Force team to Fort Wayne in October. We are starting the logistical planning to take a group of students to the Urbana Conference in December, and plans are under way for trips to Mongolia, Ecuador and Nigeria this following summer! We are also facilitating a couple of semester abroads and a summer learning trip to Italy.
Pray for us as we get to know the incoming freshman class. Pray we can connect well with students sensing a call to global mission, along with students sensing a call to turn to Jesus. Our mentoring times will start rolling next week and the missions club the following week. Ask Holy Spirit to help us guide students through discernment as they consider where in the world God is calling them to serve.
Pictured below is a group of our students who met with missionary staff at the World Partners retreat this summer. We had a panel discussion sharing about fears Generation Z has when considering a missional call. The other is us with Ezekiel, who joined us for sharing with the elementary kids at Prairie Camp.

Thank you for joining us on Saturday, August 16th, 2025! We raised $41,000 towards free medical, dental, and mental health care to the uninsured, underinsured, and those without access in our community.

2 years ago, Kelley and Ashley started a LoveBox group.

Last weekend, they became foster parents.

We want to express our immense gratitude for all of our volunteers. Day in and day out, our volunteers display unwavering dedication to the foster care community throughout Marion and Polk counties.

As Kelley and Ashley start on their new adventure as foster parents, we are so excited to wrap them with support, encouragement, and community. Kelley and Ashley got to start their fostering journey with a foster parent shower!

Angels on the Vine was a tremendous success with $5,632 raised to support the foster care community in Marion and Polk counties.

What an honor it has been to walk the city with many of you this Summer as we pray for our community! God is at work here in Salem! Did you know? Azerbaijan, a nation at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, boasts a rich and diverse culture influenced by Turkic, Iranian, and Caucasian traditions. This is evident in its vibrant folk arts, including the intricate weaving of Azerbaijani carpets, the soulful melodies of mugham music, and energetic national dances. Geographically, the country is defined by the Caucasus Mountains to the north, the Caspian Sea to the east, and expansive lowlands at its center, creating a varied landscape with nine distinct climate zones. Azerbaijan’s economy is heavily reliant on its vast oil and gas reserves, which have fueled significant development but also created a major dependency. Consequently, the nation’s primary needs include diversifying its economy beyond hydrocarbons into sectors like agriculture, tourism, and technology. Additionally, Azerbaijan faces the challenges of resolving the long standing internal conflict, strengthening governance and tackling corruption to ensure long term stability and sustainable growth.

Local Partner – Salem Free Clinics:

Another great opportunity to get outside and be active is the Run for Salem Free Clinics on Saturday August 16th!

Salem Free Clinics, a community non-profit dedicated to providing quality, compassionate healthcare at no cost to the uninsured as an expression of Christ’s love. Last year’s race was a huge success with a record amount of participants. This year, we are excited to announce that we will have both an in-person and virtual race option again!

Global Partner – Reid Saunders:

Please be praying for RSA’s upcoming trip to Zimbabwe, August 26-30th where they will share the Good News at festivals and interact with the communities! Here is a recent update from Reid:

I want to share an encouraging story with you about my dear friend and fellow evangelist, Peter. Peter is an alumnus of RSA’s Evangelist Equipping Program (EEP) and recently shared at our Spring Benefit.

When Peter began the EEP, he had no budget, limited structure, and a big vision. Through God’s grace and the training and support he received, Peter was equipped to turn that vision into reality.

Since completing the EEP, Peter has raised over $100,000 and established a functioning board of directors. Those funds have helped build a four-story orphanage in India, which is now nearing completion.

“I’m truly grateful for the way RSA training has played a key role in helping our ministry grow.” -Peter

The Evangelist Equipping Program is designed to train and equip those called to be evangelists. Over the course of a year, participants like Peter grow in their ability to lead, preach the Gospel, and raise support. The EEP provides tools for living a Christ-centered life, leading with integrity, building donor partnerships, and organizing successful outreaches.

Because of your generosity, emerging evangelists are being empowered to spread the Gospel and bring lasting transformation to communities around the world.

Hey Church Family,

I hope this email finds you well and that you are enjoying your summer. It seems like just yesterday we were ringing in the new year and now we have already lit our 4th of July fireworks. So many exciting things are happening at MStar this summer, from last month’s Great Camp to summer Prayer Walks to next month’s Kids Sports Camp outreach. God is always up to something! As we move through summer, I want to take a few moments to update you on our finances and other operational notes.

June Actual Giving: $115,216.32

2025 JANUARY-JUNE BUDGET REPORT / MINISTRY FUND
Budget: $905,000.00

JULY GIVING NEED
July Budget: $145,000.00

Comments: After a strong financial start to 2025, we have quickly seen finances get tight. We are praying that there will be just as quick a reversal back to the plus side as we continue to move the mission forward. Things are less than ideal, but it’s far too early to make any major decisions. We are watching our spending and tightening our belts where we can as we continue to assess our financial situation and options. We will continue to communicate clearly if this deficit trend continues.

PROPERTY UPDATE
Last fall we shared with you that Morning Star was ready to enter into a PSA (Purchase and Sale Agreement) with an undisclosed buyer who was interested in the 7.5 acres on the south side of our property along Kuebler. Over the past six months, these conversations have stalled and we are now back to the drawing board. This is disappointing news to share, as the Board of Elders and I felt that this was a great opportunity for us. Despite the disappointment, we truly believe God’s best for us is still out there and that God will reward our faithful patience. The Board of Elders continues to work behind the scenes to see what options would best propel our mission forward. We are currently receiving a third party evaluation on our property that will help with future decision making. We will continue to update you as progress is made.

Hello Morning Star Family,

Missions is often misunderstood as something that only happens far far away across the world. The reality is we are called to live on mission wherever we are. Summer brings many opportunities to get outdoors and engage with the people around us. Will you join us as we Prayer Walk this Summer? Learn more below! Thanks for continuing to pray and engage in Missions at Morning Star!

We’re canvasing our city in prayer this Summer! God is at work here in Salem! Prayer walks help us see Him in action and bring us into obedience with His will for His people. You can join us for 3 big gatherings at specific locations, and prayer walk on your own in your own neighborhood any other time this Summer. Local Partner – Camp Agape:

Camp Agape which provides fun & encouraging camps for students whose parents are incarcerated, is looking for 2 bus drivers on July 18th. Additionally they are looking for Nurses to fill some remaining shifts from July 17th-20th. Global Partner – Reid Saunders:

Last month, 1,262 people gathered for a united church service in Dallas, Oregon, and it was incredible! I had the opportunity to train believers to share the gospel and give an invitation for attendees to place their faith in Jesus Christ. Praise God, 28 people put their faith in Jesus!

This gathering marks the beginning of a yearlong season of evangelism, building toward a citywide festival in summer 2026. Please be praying. God is moving in Oregon!

GREAT CAMP 2025

June 21-26 2025 // Triangle Lake, Blachly, OR

Final Registration starts at MStar at noon on Saturday, June 21 and we will be leaving at 1 pm sharp. We will be taking buses to camp. By registering online you DO NOT need to fill out a hard copy of the waiver. All payments are due on departure day. We will return by 3 pm on Thursday, June 26.

PACKING LIST

Please note that the forecast includes a chance of rain, please make sure your student is packed and equipped accordingly.

WHAT TO BRING: Bible, tent, warm sleeping bag (it can get COLD at night), pillow, flashlight, reusable water bottle, deodorant, soap, shampoo, toothbrush/toothpaste, one beach towel, one shower towel, flip flops (for the shower), modest swimwear, sunscreen, a week’s worth of clothes (including a sweatshirt or something warm for the evenings). Please label all of your belongings with your name.

OPTIONAL: money for the snack shack, sunglasses, camera, water toys.

WHAT NOT TO BRING: Anything illegal or dangerous, such as explosives, drugs, weapons, or fire producing objects, OR ANYTHING that would potentially distract you or anyone else (this would include but is not limited to, most entertainment equipment, electronic devices, reading materials, cell phones, iPods, indecent swimwear, bad attitudes, pranks, video games, laser pointers, etc.). Also, don’t bring anything super valuable or that will break your heart if it gets lost or broken.

NEW CELL PHONE POLICY: PLEASE READ

CELL PHONE POLICY: This year there will be more reliable cell service at camp. We want to keep camp a place free from distractions, specifically internet access and social media. So we will be implementing a no phones at camp policy. Students will be allowed their phones on the bus rides to and from camp, but we will be collecting them and holding them in secure storage for the week. If you need to get in contact with your student, our camp directors Robert Beckley and Daniel Bennet will have their phones (as will the rest of the small group leaders, with location limited wifi and service).

We will also still have the lodge landline for calling home.

Students will be allowed to call parents whenever needed, parents can call the lodge phone at (541) 927-3330, our camp directors, or small group leaders. Our goal is to limit distractions, not parental access.

CAMP DIRECTION

Our speaker Matt Adams will be covering stories about the real Jesus; His life, Miracles, Parables, and how He interacts with real people with real lives.

Part of Great Camp includes Breakout Sessions taught by adults at camp. These are smaller groups with specific topics to help our students understand different facets of following Jesus. Our breakout groups this year well be about spiritual disciplines, biblical leadership, ways to read the Bible, anxiety, and how we use our words!
