Born Free has created a digital mosaic of Mayos, a four month old chimpanzee whose life in the wild has been brought to an abrupt end.

Just four months old and weighing less than 3kg (6½lbs), Mayos (left) is a baby chimpanzee. So young, her teeth have only just come through and her hands and feet are still soft and pink. She should be clinging to her mother in the forest, too small to have taken her first steps.

But her mother is dead. Shot by a hunter and chopped up for meat in the forests of eastern Cameroon, on the west coast of Africa. Mayos’ life as a wild chimpanzee was brought to an abrupt end. The hunter kept her alive hoping to sell her as a ‘pet’. But her chances of survival were bleak.

Every year hundreds of chimps are illegally killed to supply the commercial ‘bushmeat’ trade. Chimp meat is sold in cities worldwide as a luxury food for wealthy people. Entire families of these intelligent, sentient creatures are hunted, killed and eaten on a daily basis, their traumatised babies sold as exotic pets.

This sickening trade threatens the chimpanzee’s very existence. One hundred years ago there were more than one million. Today fewer than 150,000 remain. Heading for extinction, chimps - our closest relatives - are being eaten to death.

Fortunately, Mayos is one of the lucky ones. She was rescued. After a long and arduous road trip the distraught baby was brought to Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC) in southern Cameroon. Terrified and very weak, Mayos needed specialist 24 hour care. She is one of the youngest infants LWC has ever cared for.

The St Mark's mosaic appeal was launched in April last year at an event where donors bid up the £1,800 for the first tile. As more people get to hear of the appeal, its popularity is growing and this month's funds raised by the appeal passed the £117,000 mark.

St Mark's Hospital in Harrow is one of the best hospitals in the world for the treatment of diseases of the bowel. They are specialists in the causes and treatment of diseases such as Colitis, Crohn's and Bowel Cancer and they treat patients who have been referred to them from all over the country.

St Mark's Hospital is doing more than anyone to extend the understanding of diseases of the bowel, and the treatment of people affected by them and every year medical practitioners from around the world flock to St Mark's Hospital to hear about their groundbreaking work. St Mark's Hospital receives funding from the NHS, but the hospital's research and education programme, the very things that have made St Mark's Hospital great, cannot be funded from the public purse. The cost of this work, which is affecting millions, is borne by the St Mark's Hospital Foundation.

The Foundation is faced each year with having to raise funds for their ongoing research programme and the St Mark's Foundation Mosaic Appeal is making a valuable contribution.

A team of 30 Scouts will travel to the Congo in August 2009. They will spend three weeks working on various projects to support the work of the Aspinall Foundation and local community on conservation and water projects.

An experience of a lifetime awaits thirty Scouts from Kent, who are due to head off on an unique trip to the Congo during August 2009. There they will spend three weeks, helping to develop various projects and supporting worthy causes such as the John Aspinall Foundation, a Kent based charity that operates the world’s largest and most successful Gorilla breeding and release programme.
The team will also be kept busy by being actively involved with other local community education and conservation projects. These are likely to include the construction of an Impluvarium (a rain catching device for villagers who need fresh water) and the construction of buildings for the use of researchers and visitors to the foundation.

The Scouting organisation, which offers opportunities for all young people between the ages of 6- 25 in the UK and abroad, is currently active in 216 countries and supports a global membership of over 28 million, with two thirds of its international membership situated in developing countries.

Each Scout who has volunteered to take part in the Congo expedition has been given the responsibility of raising £2500 each, towards funding the trip. Please support them by sponsoring a tile or two on their Mosaic Appeal.

The Mortgage Company works out of a beautiful Oast House in Canterbury Road, Ashford. What better surroundings for a BBQ on a bright Summer's evening. On Friday 6 June they invited clients, colleagues, friends and family to their offices to join them for food and refreshments. They took this opportunity to launch their Mosaic Appeal for Kent Cancer Trust. The purpose of the appeal is to raise funds to help relieve the suffering of cancer patients and improve the provision of cancer care in Kent.

One generous guest, Mr Royston Cobb of Pipercox, sponsored tile no. 1 for £100. By the end of the evening the appeal had reached a grand total of £790, a great kick start to their appeal.
