Introduced on Monday, Jan. 9: Acura NSX concept.

What is it? The likely return of the “everyday supercar” that Acura killed off in 2005.

Is it real? Within three years, Acura says. But late U-turns have been made before, as happened with the last NSX.

What they said: “Good ideas are timeless if they are well executed,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura, in an interview. “The original NSX successor was going to be too heavy, too powerful and not unique. We decided to stop chasing the market and move in a more refined direction that we call smart luxury.” Acura stated in a release that the next-gen NSX would be built at Honda’s plant in Marysville, Ohio; the earlier cars were all built in Japan.

What they didn’t say: When the NSX first came out in 1990, it was sleek and futuristic looking, but it fell short of supercar specification with its 270-horsepower V-6. Acura finally decided to redesign it with a V-10, but then abruptly canceled the car — to its regret, ever since.

What makes it tick? The concept is said to be powered by gasoline-electric hybrid technology. A midship V-6 once again provides principal thrust, but this time with an assist from two electric motor drives and a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. But from a technical standpoint, a lot can change in the next three years.

How much, how soon? When and if this car is ever produced, we’re probably looking at Acura’s first six-figure car.

How’s it look? A real show-stopper and a true evolution of the old cab-forward sort of skew that the original NSX had but with somewhat better proportions. The look is still spoiled to a degree by an insistence on incorporating the polarizing Acura brand grille treatment.

It was only a matter of time. As the successor to the legendary AE86 – one of the cars that founded the sport of drifting – it was only right that a Scion FR-S would be on the 2012 Formula DRIFT grid.

This is the car that Ken Gushi will be using in this year’s FD series.

The turbocharged FR-S is a collaboration with GReddy and will feature parts developed by Cosworth, KW Suspension, Sparco and RAYS. Although few details were released during today’s press conference, it was confirmed that it will produce around 600hp.

Eight Ferraris, three Mercedes-Benzes, a Lamborghini and two other vehicles were involved in the pile-up in the southern prefecture of Yamaguchi.

No-one was seriously hurt, but the road was closed for six hours after the accident.

Media reports estimate the damaged cars are worth at least 300m yen ($3.85m; £2.46m) in total.

The sports cars – driven in convoy by a group of automobile enthusiasts – were on their way to Hiroshima, reports Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun.

Police say they believe the accident, which took place on Sunday, happened when the driver of one of the Ferraris tried to change lanes and hit the crash barrier.

“A group of cars was doing 140-160km/h (85-100mph),” an unidentified eyewitness told Japanese broadcaster TBS.

“One of them spun and they all ended up in this great mess.”

Ten people received minor injuries in the crash, police said.

They said some of the vehicles were beyond repair.

“I’ve never seen such a thing,” highway patrol lieutenant Eiichiro Kamitani told AFP news agency. “Ferraris rarely travel in such large numbers.”
