As part of your wedding planning, you might have thought about doing your own wedding vows. After all, you and your fiancé are unique people, so why not say something that reflects who you are? Writing wedding vows:

• Start with reading over traditional vows. They can give you a good launching point. They can also give you a structure for you both to follow, especially handy if you are writing them separately.
• Read over your favorite poems or song lyrics. These might be a great way for you to include a particularly meaningful passage in your vows.
• Use some quotes from your favorite TV show or movie. It could be a line you love to quote to each other or it might be something you heard on your first date.
• If you two love video games, you might even make reference to the game in your vows. You can have a full wedding theme around your favorite movie or game.
• Find some advice from your parents or grandparents to use. This often brings tears to the eyes of your attendees, but it’s also a really sweet way to pay tribute at the same time as you are starting your lives together.
• Use humor. One couple wrote, “I will always make sure there’s a box of fruit loops at home” as the other partner loves fruit loops. Just make sure the joke is appropriate and that it is not too obscure.
• Mention something cute or quirky about the other person. Those things you find endearing about your beloved are the things you will always cherish, so why not share them?
• Some religions have written agreements, so they make a great starting point for vows. For instance, in Judaism, the bride and groom sign a ketubah, or a form of a prenuptial agreement. You could consider incorporating part of the wording of the ketubah into your vows. Some couples have read their ketubah in front of everyone and explained what each component means to them.
• Write all the words down that you want, then trim them down later to about a minute’s worth of words per person. Getting all of your ideas down allows you to see them all and pick the best ideas and the ones that are the most important to you.

One thing to make sure of is that both of you are on the same page and that you both know you will be doing your own vows. A surprise here would not be too good!

There are traditions and etiquette standards for who pays for which part of a wedding. The easy way to break everything down is to say that the bride and her family pay for the wedding, and the groom pays for all of the rehearsal items. That might be a bit too simple, however, so let’s dive into a bit more detail of which family pays for which part of a wedding.

What the bride’s family covers:

The bride’s parents pay for the engagement party as well as the listing in the announcements section of the newspaper. The goal of the engagement party is to welcome the groom into her family and let the two families get better acquainted. It gives the families the opportunity to meet before the wedding day and thus reduce some of the stress that comes with the wedding itself. An aside on the announcement – if the groom is from another city, it might be nice to post an announcement in his hometown newspaper, too.

Her family will also handle all of the invitations and the programs for the wedding.

The bride’s family covers all of the things that go into the wedding itself – the dress, the flowers at the wedding location, the bouquets the bride’s attendants carry, the limousine, the location, the photographer, the costs incurred by the officiant including his or her travel expenses, and the reception including music, decorations and food. The bride’s parents are also typically the host and hostess for the reception.

The bride buys the gifts (and often arranges for the hotels) for her bridesmaids and maid of honor, and she pays for the groom’s wedding ring.

What the groom’s family covers:

The groom’s family pays for the rehearsal dinner as well as the boutonnieres for the groom’s attendants, and of course, the groom’s tuxedo. They would also cover the corsages for mothers and grandmothers. The groom’s parents are the hosts of this dinner also. This meal is often much smaller than the reception, and it typically only includes the wedding party and maybe a few of the bride and groom’s closest friends.

They also pay for the groom’s attendants’ lodging when the bride is covering her attendants. However, all of the attendants are responsible to pay for their own clothing.

The groom will also cover the license costs and the engagement and wedding rings for the bride. The actual fee for the officiant is often covered by the groom’s family, too.

Many times in the past the groom or his family covered the honeymoon, but as times change, often the new couple co-pays for this.

Sometimes the groom’s family will cover the costs of the champagne for the reception, a nice gesture that helps balance the costs. They also pay for the bride’s bouquet and her corsage as well as the corsages for the mothers.

Wedding Videography – Filming Your Perfect Day

There’s a lot a questions that arise when you are booking a videographer for your wedding. Many people are not in tuned with whats involved in processing or shooting your wedding video. We are here to help you ask the necessary questions to ensure you get the best results from your wedding videographer.

Many or most of our clients really don’t know how we film their wedding and reception, the post-production process, and what to expect of the finished film. A consultation is your opportunity to ease your concerns, identify your interests, and ask for a description (in general terms) of the process of creating your video.

• Reassurance: You need to know/feel that your videographer understands that this is one of the most important days of your life: That everything he/she does will be focused on filming what is important to you. You also want your videographer to be as unobtrusive as possible at all times.

• Information: Make sure that they understand what you want them to cover. Although they should have experience in covering a wedding, give them a mapped out information about the day, including:

  • Venue(s) and ceremony program

  • Time and events –what periods of time you will expect to be filmed / what events should be covered.

  • Identify key people and activities (in addition to the ceremony) to be filmed.

• Filming: Ask him/her to outline their video process.

  • How many cameras will they use, where, and why?

  • How will they record the sound portion of the video – will they use auxiliary microphones like lapel or lavaliere system.

  • Who (if anyone) will be assisting them.

• Post Production: this is the creative and careful knitting together of filmed images and audio into a smoothly flowing finished film. Ask for a summary of how the digital images are uploaded from the cameras to their computer and which video editing software is used to edit the film to its final form.

  • Videos should be edited in post-production, not in-camera. In-camera editing will not yield the desired cohesive results.

  • Edit for more than one version. You may opt to have a 5 to 8 minute “overview or video highlights” (to share with friends), and a longer or full-length version for yourself.

  • They should be editing for continuity of action and story, using transition overlaps, cuts, and audio to build emotions and tell your story, scene by scene.

  • He/she should outline the finishing touches (if you ask for that option) such as titles, retouches, lighting adjustments, subtly, special effects, music, etc.

  • Edit out unflattering footage.
    

  • Post-production-to-finished-video times will vary, depending on the finished product(s) you select, and how much footage they film. Ask for a specific completion date.

Loading yourself with a lot of technical information may be overwhelming – especially when your mind is filled with other wedding arrangements. Be up front in asking questions and alert as to how much information is not enough (or too much).

Modern:

• Larger than Retro or Vintage photo booths, Vintage booths are enclosed with curtains, lightweight walls, or panels. They are larger in interior proportions and can accommodate larger groups of people. Modern booths are “demountable” (can be broken into smaller components) and are more easily moved around a venue. NOTE: some of these booths are not fitted with a screen so guests will be unaware of when photos are taken.

Kiosk:

• This booth type is a column-style machine without an enclosure. Nothing blocks out the people or other extraneous background that may appear in the picture. The Kiosk booth can be set up either open or with an enclosure.

Novelty:

• Think photo booth on wheels – almost any vehicle. Creative vendors have converted cars, caravans, and mini-vans into photo booths complete with digital technology.

Studio or Open Style:

• The typical setup includes a green screen or a backdrop and studio lights, but the pictures are taken by an on-site photographer.

Photo booths are used, particularly in Europe, Australia, and Japan, for passports, driving licenses and other identification forms. In the U.S., they are used mostly for entertainment.

So it’s finally here – your daughter’s Sweet 16 birthday year, and it’s time to start planning her party. This right-of-passage can be significant in your young lady’s life so planning the sweet 16 carefully and well in advance is important. If you are going all out with a Sweet 16 party for friends, here are some points to consider as you begin planning.

Planning a sweet 16 do’s

    •    Start planning 3 – 8 months before the party: experienced Sweet 16 party planners recommend 2-3 months before, but we truly believe that this is not enough time to plan such a big event. Consider planning your event as early as possible in order to tackle all that’s ahead.
    •    Create a checklist/timeline: this will help you keep track of the many tasks that must take place before and on the day of the party.
    •    Decide on a theme: picking a theme will help you with your budgeting, decorating, venue choice, etc.
    •    Select a date as early as possible: it doesn’t have to be your daughter’s actual birthday. Remember to take into consideration any holidays and vacations and plan to send out “Save the Date” notices to those on the guest list.
    •    Decide on the venue: your party’s venue should be appropriate to the occasion.
    •    Do develop a budget: it will help you with your overall planning. Include an extra amount for unexpected expenses. Keep track of every expenses – even the least amounts; save those receipts, contracts, and notices, too!

    •    Do your research on a Photographer, Videographer, entertainment company or DJ because it can make or ruin your event (like this picture which was given to us to be retouched because the photographer was an inexperienced).

Don’ts

    •    Don’t do this alone: remember, this is a pivotal moment in your daughter’s life. If you do all the planning, you might be overlooking what is important to her. Your daughter should be a partner in planning and executing her party. Call in additional reinforcements to help with the various tasks and activities (especially if this will be a DIY party).  
    •    Don’t underestimate the importance of the RSVP: food and a booked venue will be among your larger expenses. You need to know how many guests to plan for as well as the size of the venue to book.
    •    Don’t send out invitations until you have double-checked every USPS and/or email address: avoid the pain of hurt feelings because an invitation was undeliverable.
    •    Don’t open gifts at the party: this “rule” is open to debate and your decision may be based on the number of gifts, the venue, and the activities planned for the day. It may be better to wait till a later date to enjoy opening the gift. Plus, you’ll spend lots of time that can be very well spent dancing.

Final thoughts for you. 

    •    It’s OK to feel a bit stressed: on party day, ordinarily small irritating things can suddenly balloon way out of proportion. Take a moment to breathe deeply and affirm to yourself that all is well.
    •    Not sending thank you notes is NOT an option: it may be old-fashioned and just not done anymore, but your daughter’s guests (both friends and family) deserve to know that they are appreciated for their thoughtfulness and generosity. If she’s old enough to be acknowledged as a young adult, she’s old enough to write thank you notes to her guests without complaint or delay!

VJs Explained

We’ve all heard of disk jockeys and odds are that if you’re planning a wedding, you may be considering hiring one yourself. However, as technology has improved some DJs have taken an additional step from the norm and become VJs. VJ stands for video disk jockey, which in essence is a DJ who also plays videos to accompany the music that is being played. You may have seen a version of this in nightclubs, where a music video will accompany the song. Well a mobile VJ offers the same services on a slightly smaller scale but they can make a big difference for your wedding reception or after party.

Customization

VJs are able to attach practically any video to a track in their repertoire. While you can still have the standard music videos to go along with the song that is playing, more creative couples can easily create their own videos and ask the VJ to play them over particular songs.

This idea is particularly useful during the first dance. Imagine a video of moments shared by you and your partner playing in the background as your favorite song plays and you share that first dance. It’s sure to tug on the heart-strings of practically any guest at the wedding and it will make that first dance even more memorable and special.

If you are interested in customized videos, it is best to speak to your selected VJ way in advance. They will be able to tell you what file format they need the video to be made in, and may also be able to help you work on it so that it fits the music perfectly. It takes time to edit a video so don’t leave this for last minute. The last thing you want is to plan a dance along the tunes of a video and things don’t come out the way you imagined. This is usually associated with poor planning and last minute edits.

Even for the songs where a custom video isn’t playing, a good VJ will have a large stock of videos that can add an extra layer of atmosphere to the music. Whether it’s the original music video or their own creations, a VJ should always have plenty to offer in both the audio and visual departments.

Are they worth hiring?

In truth it really depends on what you are looking to portrait at your reception party. Some couples prefer something a little more subtle, with a band or a regular DJ, which is perfectly fine.

VJs are perhaps at their best when they are working a party that has a more loud and boisterous atmosphere. They will be able to match their videos to the mood of the music and the room, creating a dance floor that is truly unforgettable.

Of course, you also need to consider the fact that a VJ is likely to cost a little more than a regular DJ. Remember that they generally need to bring a fair bit of equipment along with them, all of which will require them to charge higher rates. Furthermore, that extra equipment takes up more space, so if that is a factor it is certainly worth checking around before making the decision.

Last of all, go with your gut. If you don’t feel as though a VJ could enhance the wedding party then don’t hire one. Tips for Newlyweds

1. Appreciate the little things

At the end of the day, it’s the little things that make people happy. Staying in bed together for a couple of extra hours on a Sunday morning, enjoying a meal together or simply watching a movie and sharing a laugh together. The little things bind us in subtle ways so let them happen and enjoy them to the fullest.

2. Communicate

Every relationship will have its issues. After all, it is practically impossible to find somebody who is exactly like you in every way. Talk through your issues and don’t let them build up. The more time you spend being pridefull and thinking you are right and not paying attention to your partner’s feelings, the more time you waste. Like most people say, communication is key. Most importantly, always be honest with each other.

3. Independence

Time apart is almost as important as time together. If you like doing certain things and your partner has no interest in them, don’t be afraid to enjoy them on your own. It will make the times you do share even more special. I find that this works with some couples we follow up with but it depends on the relationship you have with your partner. If you want to follow this tip, I recommend that you speak with your partner and make sure she/he is ok with this. Remember that communication is key. It has always worked for me.

4. Realize nobody is perfect

Dating is entirely different from spending your life together. The little gestures designed to impress a person are most of the times stripped away during the course of the marriage. Unfortunately, this is inevitable and you have to accept that you’re both human and each has their own imperfections. If he/she makes a mistake, embrace it instead of getting upset. Realize that this is part of your new experience and come up with ways to mold your relationship how you want it.

5. Sex

Althought this doesn’t come up a lot, the ones that talk about it say that sex is important. I beleive that you can’t let the spark die through overfamiliarity. Experiment with and enjoy your sex lives. After all, a couple is never closer than they are during the most intimate of moments.

6. Roll with the punches

In a lot of the weddings we host, it is likely we hear the words “for better or for worse”. Remember that phrase! Life won’t always be perfect but whether is financial, medical or conditional, there is nothing that you and your partner can’t face as long as you do it together.

7. The first is just the beginning

Some couples have a rocky start. Remember that you will be spending a lifetime with your other half. If the first year isn’t going so well just remember that there are many more to come and they all hold their own ups and downs, just as they would if you weren’t married.

8. Keep dating

We hear this one a lot, specially from women. It is extremely important to spend time together. Make sure that you make the effort to do so outside of the regular monotony of life. It doesn’t have to be extravagant. Enjoy a film, cook a meal of go for a walk. Anything that you can do together can be a date.

9. Compromise

We mentioned that disagreements can happen and, at the end of the day, it shouldn’t be about who wins. It should be about reaching a conclusion that satisfies you both as far as possible.
