A California photographer gathered all of the neighborhood dogs for a bit of a photo experiment. He threw balls into a pool and took pictures from below the surface of the water.

I’ve posted  a tighter crop of the original image below. As you can see, he had already gotten into his cookie before I could capture the shot. He’s fast!

It took some time, but I managed to clean up his face and shirt. I also added the lit candle you see in the final image above. It had to be afterwards. Otherwise, this curious monkey would have tried to eat the flame!

Atlanta’s Piedmont Park was the perfect backdrop for a natural, outdoor setting that showcased beautiful Fall colors. We had a great time and I couldn’t be happier with the images.

I’m a proud father, which makes me a bit biased, but do kids come any cuter? ADORABLE! 

I may print a couple of these next shots and hang them in our bathroom. Can you help me decide which 2 would be the best to hang on the wall?

I tell my wife all the time, “Honey, when our children decide to get married, they had better pick a photographer’s kid. Otherwise, their part of the wedding slideshow is going to be lame compared to ours.” Ha! (I’m kidding, of course.)

Jaclyn and I took our kids to a trunk-or-treat at a local church and it was a blast! Sydney loved dressing up. Plus, she scored lots of candy and played in a bounce house. A great way to spend Halloween.

I hope you had as much fun as we did!

Enter the “Freak Show”…

“Freak Show” is a circus of misfits, outcasts, and well… freaks. The ringmaster, played by Jonah Limbert, is symbolic of satan. He lures characters into his evil traps and holds them captive. Each freak has a story of how they became ensnared and the agony they now face.

Spooky? Yes! Effective ministry? Highly!

Mosley Pro Photo was invited to photograph the cast and set up a photo booth where students could have their photo made with one of the freaks. Keep reading for more photos.

The conclusion of “Freak Show” led into a great opportunity for Pastor Jeremiah Stingl to share the gospel by directly applying the various types of characters to the students lives.

I was highly impressed with the cast and the entire production. Insane to think that this is a student ministry production. Great job to the director, Meiko Seymour, and the many people it took to pull this off.

P.S. Anyone else have a hard time remembering which comes first, Labor Day or Memorial Day? I’m always getting them backwards, that is, until someone recently taught me a trick for remembering their order. Memorial Day is in May. Just match the m’s. Simple enough even I will remember now!

This 2-minute stop-motion animated film shows the life of a farmer as he slowly turns his family farm into an industrial animal factory, before seeing the errors of his ways and opting for a more sustainable future.

It even has Willie Nelson performing a cover of Coldplay’s “The Scientist”, which I love!

UPDATE: Sorry, but it appears the owner made the video private. Sadly, we can no longer see it. Shame.

Chipotle Mexican Grill commissioned the video. I’m not sure I’ve visited their restaurant, and I sluggishly eat McDonald’s like many of you, but I do support the message of the video. I mean, have you seen Food Inc or Super Size Me? Whoa… scary.

I’m certainly starting to rethink what I put in my body.

The song is released on iTunes, with proceeds going to a non-profit organization, Chipotle Cultivate Foundation, “committed to creating a more sustainable and healthful food supply and to raising awareness concerning food issues”.

Squares A & B are the same shade!

What about you? Do you like optical illusions? Do you remember the one with the gray checkerboard, and a cylinder which cast a “shadow”? Chances are you’ve seen it. Here’s an example to the right. Believe it or not, squares A and B are the same shade of grey. Click the thumbnail to zoom in.

Well, check this out! The illusion has been recreated on video. It’s short, only a minute or so long. You’ll be amazed!

Do you know how the illusion works? If not, here’s your hint. The shadow on the checkerboard isn’t a shadow at all. Even more confused? No worries. The guys who created the video tell you all about it. You’ll have to click “show more” in the YouTube description field.

Shade & Shadows Impact on Photography

Did you know that shade and shadows play a big part in photography as well?

Over the past 8 years, I’ve intensively studied light and how it impacts our visual perception of the world around us. Call it a photographer’s habit, but when I walk into a room one of the first things I notice is the direction of the light and how it fills the space.

What kind of mood does it create? Is it soft or harsh? I’m even looking for shadows and their shapes.

Why? Because lighting is the most important component of any photograph. No light – no photograph. I’d say that’s pretty important! Plus, light, and subsequently shadows, ad depth, character, and mood to images.

I’ve noticed something since I began studying light… my photos got a lot better!

The first time I saw the movie Dumb & Dumber I laughed so hard my sides hurt the next day. Do you remember the “bathroom” scene? Whoa! That was funny. Lloyd (Jim Carey) and Harry (Jeff Daniels) are the perfect pair of knit-wits!

Relax, this post isn’t really about Dumb & Dumber. This is a photography site, remember? I LOVE one-liners and there is a perfect one in this movie that relates to a recent complaint I’ve had with Facebook.

After Lloyd trades the Mutt Cuts van in for a moped, Harry says to him,

Just when I thought you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this… and totally redeem yourself!

If you haven’t seen the movie, you won’t appreciate the “dumb” humor here, but the line still applies to a recent update by Facebook. Keep reading and I’ll show you what I mean.

I love Facebook. I use it personally and professionally on a daily basis. But as a photographer, there was one thing about the service that I felt was just “Dumb”. Facebook only allowed low resolution photos to be uploaded. Simply, every time you upload a picture it would lose a LOT of quality.

It’s true. Did you see my side-by-side photo comparisons in a previous post? It’s bad!

I didn’t get it. They are the largest social sharing service in the world. Yet, they limited its users to low quality, highly compressed, photo uploads. Certainly, if services like Flickr, or the new 500px, can handle the larger files, Facebook could as well.

Just when I thought Facebook couldn’t possibly be any “dumber”, they go and do something like this…

Facebook Now Provides a "High Resolution" Upload Option

And totally redeem themselves!

Facebook now allows for high resolution photo uploads! Yay! I’ve tested it and so far I’m quite pleased. And I really didn’t notice anything taking “10x longer”.

Thanks for the update Facebook! I will be one of your 600 million friends again.
