You should bring a pen and paper, and will then brainstorm on the best practice to adopt to the Club’s on-going Maintenance Program. For example, Jim Aroney has the excellent suggestion that we should not be satisfied with just “maintaining” boats, we should be upgrading them so that every boat in the shed is in pristine condition, even the oldest ones - that way, everybody has stake in caring for them. He wants to start with one boat we all “bring back to life”.

This is one excellent idea, but there are others, and we welcome your input. We aim to collate all the suggestions, and agree on an on-going program to end this wasteful damage and to keep our fleet excellent.

The program will aim to fit around winter sport commitments, and will include both sculling and sweep, focusing on technical improvements. There will also be opportunities for integrated training sessions with the current MRC squads.

We would like to encourage all rowers of an intermediate or better standard to apply, but please note the squad shall be limited to a maximum 12 athletes.

An initial information and selection day for the boys program will be run as per the following: -

When: -            12pm, Sunday 14^th June

Where: -           Mosman Rowing Club (Upstairs in New Gym)

What: -             Brief meeting, followed by testing

-      Selection criteria will be based on Height, Weight, Arm span, Leg strength, arm strength and 2km Step rate erg time (R24-30)

Bring: -             Training gear ( shoes and a zootie), and  a completed application form

For both programs, previous membership at Mosman is not required, and where possible the program will look to select athletes with the ambitions and potential to row for NSW and Australia.

I thought I would take the opportunity to provide you with a brief
update on the latest club activities and news for April.

*_Boat House Opening_*

I am very pleased to say that we have officially opened the new boat
house. Dom Lopez OAM, Mayor of Mosman alongside Bryan Weir, Club
President opened the curtain to unveil the official opening plaques on
April 4. The ceremony was followed by a dinner at which Vice Captain
John Dollison received Lifetime Membership. The main room upstairs was
also dedicated to Bryan Weir for his instrumental work in getting the
building financed and built. Watch out for the big news story in the
Mosman Daily next Thursday!

I would like to extend a special thank you to the members who helped me
organise the event, set up and clean up afterwards - particularly Annie,
Amy, Alfie, Kieran, Zoe and Julia.

*_CBA Launch_*

Thursday 16^th marked the launch of the Commonwealth Bank Corporate
Regatta at Mosman Rowing Club. For those who may not be aware, this is
the largest fundraising event of the clubs calendar year and critical to
our ongoing operation. I would like to thank Tony Blay in his tireless
effort in organising the event as well as the vast group of volunteer
coaches, members on pontoon or BBQ duty and all other supporters.

The Corporate rowers will commence training at the club this Saturday
until the middle of May and I ask all members to give them a warm welcome.

If you are interested in showing your support for the club and
volunteering your time to help in the event please contact Tony Blay or
myself.

*_­Australian Selection Trials_*

The Australian Rowing Selection Trials will be starting today (Friday
17^th ) and continuing for 10 days. I wish all our athletes (Dan Noonan,
Olivia Heath, Tom Wear, James Franki, Eliza Flint, Charlie Marriott,
Marianna Doumanis and Henry MacPhillamy) the best and ask everyone to
support them by allowing them to stay focused on the job by minimising
any other club distractions.

On other matters I wanted to highlight the importance of safety on the
water (including the use of lights and ‘logging’ all Club boats being
used in the log book prior to getting on the water).

I also wanted to highlight that if you come across any boat damages or
breakages, please report them to Tony Blay who will sort matters out
accordingly.

help in any of our future fundraising events, please do not hesitate to

The start of the week saw the U/19 men’s pair of Charlie Marriott and Dane Buchorn get off to a shaky start, with a 4^th in the heat. This saw the boys race the repacharge, which they won in emphatic style in the slick time of 6.56. After a 21 second improvement from the heat to rep, the boys were looking good for a spot in the final, but in difficult conditions, the relatively new combo only missed qualifying for the final by one spot.

Not long after this, the U/19 men’s double combination of James Beam Franki and Tommy “The Terminator” Wear raced their heat. In an impressive start, the boys cruised to a comfortable 2^nd, to directly qualify for the semi. Then, after posting the second fastest time in the large field of 26 crews, the boys set a blistering pace in the semi posting the fastest first 1500m of everyone before easy off and letting the NSW champions Barwon take the win.

For the final the following day, the boys had a special preparation, which included ingesting litres of chocolate milk, and the coaches cooking, followed by  a dip in the sub zero Cradle Mt river with a couple of Mosman’s Olympians- The Irish Brothers- Sean and Dan Noonan. This seemed to do the trick, in a huge head wind and in the outside lane the boys went toe to toe with the WA gorillas (see photo below). They couldn’t quite sustain the pace through the middle to win, but fought like tigers to hold off a fast finishing Barwon for the National Silver Medal!!

Both crews are now in preparation for Junior Selection trials in April, and we look forward to more good things.

Julia and Alex were again on the dais in the Adaptive Womens LTA 2x. Julia, and her crewmate of Carol Cooke from the Yarra Yarra Club, drove their boat to Julia’s second National Title of the week, and Alex again earning the Silver medal.

Mosman’s other Adaptive athlete, Henry Macphillamy, was not going to leave it to Julia to bring home all the silverware, and had a fantastic race in the Adaptive Mens LTA 2x to win the Bronze medal. In only Henry’s first year of rowing he has already proven that he has what it takes to match much more experienced athletes, and the bronze medal was a great reward for his progress this season.In Henry’s other event, the Adaptive LTA 1x, he drew a very tough and fast repecharge. In a ferocius race Henry was narrowly stopped from making the Final by Peter Siri, a current National Team rower who ended up winning the Silver medal in the final the next day.

Club coach Simon Hoadley was very proud.

As you probably know by now, our new shed is nearing completion.
This has been an enormous task, and the result of a great deal of work
by many of our members,

SO NOW IT IS TIME TO PARTY AND CELEBRATE OUR ACHIEVEMENTS!!

The Official opening of the shed is to be held on April 4th— and we
want ALL of you to come along.

This email is just to notify you of the date, so you can mark it in your
diaries now!

Please keep that date free– We will be having a working bee on the day
(and yes, there will be a job for everyone).
The official function will get underway at 5.30pm, and will be followed
by a BIG PARTY.

This will be a great day in the proud history of Mosman Rowing Club–

Out of 470 entries, Bill finished 62nd overall, 9th in the Masters category, and in a time of 45.55 beat Nathan Cohen- the stroke of NZ’s Beijing double scull and the winner of the Head of the Charles in Boston last month!

Several Mosman members enjoyed Nathan’s company in some rehydration therapy in Boston.

The race was won by NZ’s Mahe Drysdale in a great effort- starting 162nd but still breaking the course record while wending his way past slower rowers

After representing Mosman and Australia for the past 11 years, Peter is moving on to the next phase of his life, and will be based in the UK for some time.
Peter first moved from Sydney to Perth in 1997 to row in an Australian Under 23 Quad Scull that I was coaching out of the WA Institute of Sport in Perth. He repeated this move for National Team duties again in 1998 and 1999.
Once again in 2000 he crossed the country to train in WA - this time as a member of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Quad Scull.
In 2001, I was the one to do the moving, and I shifted to Sydney to the NSW Institute of Sport, where I continued my coaching of Peter. He continued his good form, making every team he trialled for, up to, and including the Athens Olympics.
In 2007, showing both foresight and generosity, Mosman Rowing Club funded Peter and I to travel to the UK for him to race in the Marlow regatta at Eton, where he won on both days, and at Henley Royal Regatta, where he was only beaten in the Diamond Sculls by the eventual winner, Alan Campbell
Back in Sydney several weeks later, after an injury to another Mosman team member- Dan Noonan- Peter took a phone call from the Team Head Coach asking him to perform a 2km erg test the next morning.
Peter’s result was such that he got an immediate invitation to join the team in Varese, Italy preparing for the Munich World Championships.
Remarkably, just 18 days after that phone call, and overcoming travel and time zone difficulties, as well as rowing in a boat that he had never used before, Peter won the last qualifying spot for the single scull at the Beijing Olympics.
Peter’s career has included numerous firsts- First Gold medal by an Aussie U/23 quad scull in the Nations Cup, First medal by an Aussie mens senior quad at World Championships, First Australian sculler to compete in all three sculling boats at the Olympics, First Mosman rower to compete at three Olympics, and of course numerous World Cup medals, beating, along the way, World and Olympic Champions. Defeating triple World Champion Mahe Drysdale in the 500 metre sprint at the Oklahoma International Regatta last year is also a memory that Peter will treasure.

We’ll miss Peter, but we’re sure he’ll be back larger than life

Currently just Mosman, a Dutch college VIII, and a sculler from Molesley boating from Boston Uni, although many more expected.

Saw our girls paddle by in their VIII yesterday, looking very good after their win last weekend. Haven’t caught up with them yet. They’re boating out of the North Eastern Uni boatshed a couple of miles downstream.

Been practising working the turns and bridge lines today. We will, I think, be competitive in straightline speed, but starting at number 35 out of 39, means that if our speed is good, we may well catch up to the logjam of boats in front, and so turns become critical. It will be very much a ‘process’ race rather than outcome focussed, and coxswain Beth Smith has been great in keeping heads in the boat and on the job.

One more day of work tomorrow and a quiet Friday to follow, and then we’re on.

Three of our female rowers are on board a lightweight VIII - Club Captain Sarah Hill, crew stroke Alicia Boehm, and former Pymble school rowing crewmate Freya Mulvey.

Alicia and Freya’s former coach Mark Campbell is a member of the Mosman 50+ masters VIII which will also compete in the 5km time trial race, along with James Taylor, Club President Bryan Weir, John ‘Doc’ Myburgh, Tim Sheridan, Mark Williams, Carl Quitzau and Tim Tindale. The crew is very fortunate to secure the coxing services of Beth Smith, also ex Pymble, who will no doubt use the occasion to catch up with mates from her days at Michigan State, where she coxed with distinction. Club Head Coach Nick Garratt will accompany the men’s VIII to ensure standards of propriety are maintained.

In 2002 Tom was a member of the coxed pair that won the Australian men’s team their only medal at the World Championships in Seville. The crew was coached by current Mosman Head Coach Nick Garratt.

Tom has been a medallist in the single scull at the Junior World championships, was Australian champion in the double scull (with Mosman’s Peter Hardcastle) and was a member of NSW’s last two winning Kings Cup crews.

A couple of more points of interest. Tom is married to Ali- a former national Junior Team member, he has a 500 metre pb on the erg. of 1.15, and is one of an exclusive group ( coupled with his partner Rob Jahrling)to beat the great James Tomkins in a coxless pair.

We welcome Tom who is looking forward to helping the next generation of young Mosman Rowers achieve their potential.

Thomas Wear won the MU17 event in a time of 17’47” and finishing 6^th overall.

James Franki came second in the MU19 event in a time of 18’18”

Marianna Doumanis raced representing her school, TARA, but she trains from Mosman RC with the junior girls group. She came first in the WU17 event in a time of 19’55” and Naomi Schuf came third in a time of 21’04”.

Eliza Flint won the WU19 event in a time of 19’45”, and Susan Overall and Maddie Cavanagh finished 4^th and 5^th respectively in a time of 20’47” and 20’52”.

Congratulations to the winners and well done everyone and keep training hard.

Details of the times, updated and correct when compared to the ones posted on the NSW rowing website, for all those who went quicker then the 77.5% qualifying prognostic are as follows.

But the rower of the day was Julia Veness-Collins, who completed the course as the clubs first Adaptive entry for the winter. Her prognostic was pretty good as well, and it will be exciting to see Henry MacPhillamy and Alex Green (the clubs other adaptive athletes) try to beat her time.

Evan used to row at Mosman but is now based in Canberra where is trains fulltime in the sprinting squad at the AIS.

A special mention should be made for the Junior girls squad of Alice, Martina and Kate, who with some male assistance from Nick Fogarty, did a very strong time. And if the official umpire had judged their prognostic against a junior womens time, instead of a junior mens time, they would have got 81.3% prognostic.

Mike Trail, Scott Waller, and Jones Matos da Silva all went under 22minutes for the first time. The Novice quad, who had never been under 22minutes, decided to jump that milestone and joined Tim Sheridan and Tyler Drayton in going under 21minutes for the first time.

Go Mosman!

Ollie and Adam definitely did their bit for the NSW team. Of the official pointscoring races, all but one of the NSW medal winning boats had a Mosman Rowing Club athlete on board. Olivia grabbed a brace of Bronze medals, racing in the lightweight 2x and openweight 8+. This is a great stepping stone for Olivia as she has several more years to race in this age group, and competed well in all her events.

Adam also medaled in his lightweight 2x, getting a gutsy Silver medal for his inspiring efforts. A second Silver medal was earned by Adam in the openweight 4x. NSW’s only other medal was a Gold through Kurt Spencer in the Open 1x.

Both Olivia and Adam got a 4th placing in all their other events.

Overall the NSW team finished a competitive 3rd place behind the victorious New Zealand team, and the strong hometown team from Queensland.The 3rd placing was achieved through a solid and consistent all-around team effort, where every NSW crew qualified for the A final.

A fantastic effort this morning by all, but due to increasing numbers we will have to introduce some traffic guidelines. We will keep the race starts times as 5:50am (3km) and 6:20am (5km)

• When using the pontoon, do so as quickly as possible, it is not the time to adjust feet or fill drinkbottles with water!
• If heading to the start of the 3km or 5km, please stay close to the shoreline and give way to 3km timetriallists.
• At the startlines please line up with faster boats near the back and slower boats near the official starter.
