Hey. This is the show I uploaded and promptly deleted last week (what a pain in the arse that was…)

I re-recorded it on Tues and in predictable fashion it didn’t ‘feel’ quite as good (although that’s no doubt to do with the heavy weekend I experienced – being 33yrs old is no joke if you like a brew…). Same music though (barring an ‘hilarious’ incident where I managed to forget my MJ tribute record which lead to a drastic re-working of the last 3 tracks). Oh – and an unlisted bonus right at the end that enabled me to get the show up to the 1hr 55mins that’s required for Reverb.

So, some great hip hop new & old, some good funk & the usual dose of other stuff interspersed with my occasionally incoherent ramblings. Selling it well aren’t I ..?

Joni Mitchell – The Hissing Of Summer Lawns
Amon Tobin – 4 Ton Mantis (Bonobo Remix)
Anti Pop Consortium – Apparently
Jackie Wilson – Light My Fire
Dub MD & Cyrano – Sonar
Harvey Mandel – Wade In The Water
Sonorous Star – Tonight, We Kill The King
Pete Nice & Daddy Rich – The Sleeper
Gwen McRae – Rocking Chair
Elemental, Caruana & Count Bass D – Pay Me A Visit
The Heavy – 16
Griffin, Fudge & Pothero – Remembering Tomorrow
Donnie Hathaway – I Believe To My Soul
Das Efx – Dum Dums
Pepe Deluxe – Everybody Pass Me By
Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson – I Want To Love You Baby
Eric B & Rakim – I Ain’t No Joke
I re-recorded it on Tues and in predictable fashion it didn't 'feel' quite as good (although that's no doubt to do with the heavy weekend I experienced - being 33yrs old is no joke if you like a brew...). Same music though (barring an 'hilarious' incident where I managed to forget my MJ tribute record which lead to a drastic re-working of the last 3 tracks). Oh - and an unlisted bonus right at the end that enabled me to get the show up to the 1hr 55mins that's required for Reverb.

So, some great hip hop new #38; old, some good funk #38; the usual dose of other stuff interspersed with my occasionally incoherent ramblings. Selling it well aren't I ..?

us & us (july 2009) for motion radio
“songs from the unconventional hymnal (vol. 2)”
transmitting from mount vernon, new york, usa
supplying musical therapy by way of vinyl, cd, cassette, and mp3

“all you have to do…is try. all you have to do is…testify.”

i’ve been putting off this mix for over a year. recent events finally made me get off my butt and commit myself to getting this one done. between the election unrest in iran, economic instability, and a number of significant deaths in june (ed mcmahon, farrah fawcett and michael jackson in one week alone), the fragile nature of life has been weighing heavy on my mind. i needed to make this mix for me more than anything, but i’m all about sharing music with others, so hopefully somebody else will find some solace in these selections.

as the title suggests, there is a first installment to this mix and i can’t believe that i left the winstons off that one. sampled countless times, it’s here as not only a great addition to the unconventional hymnal, but as a nod to phuture frequency’s championing of drum and bass, a genre that is quite familiar with the “amen break.” so there’s funk and soul-driven gospel here along with some secular tunes that i thought made great segue pieces. some psychedelic interludes from john rydren, who’s totally getting his ken nordine on in terms of spoken word delivery. some gospel glitch sharing space with broken beat, choirs that wouldn’t be out of place at the disco, and a group of hebrew israelites who damn near sound like the jackson 5 (tonistics). and you will never hear pat boone sound as cool as he does on “the addicts psalm.”

i remember interviewing ohmega watts for impose magazine (back when it was still in print and not strictly web) and he was telling me about sugar pie desanto’s inspiration for “are you satisfied.” her husband died around the same time that a fire gutted her home. in spite of those setbacks, she persevered and it’s that same spirit that bursts forth through the song. joy jones exemplifies that as well: i absolutely had to include “the joy” as part of the unconventional hymnal. it’s my song of encouragement as of late. the same can be said for doom’s “thank ya,” which i play every week right before i walk into work.

my apologies for the low volume on “open your eyes” – my copy of the organized konfusion record is a low pressing. beyond that, i really didn’t rehearse this mix, although i had a good idea as to where certain songs should go. basically, i wanted to move as the spirit led me, so to speak. some of the transitions may not be their smoothest, but neither is a believer’s spiritual walk through this life. with that said, i hope that you enjoy this one. peace, beats, and blessings…

us & us (may 2009) for motion radio
“talking points and frames of reference”
transmitting from mount vernon, new york, usa
supplying musical therapy by way of vinyl, cd, cassette, and mp3

this is me getting used to the new mixer in my house after not having one for at least a year and a half. i hadn’t touched a pair of turntables in what seemed like forever. i didn’t want there to be a whole lot of planning although i did have certain songs and blends in mind. i just hit record and went for it. everything between plaid and hrvatski was one take. mike ladd and diego cortex were added on as bookends later. i’ll admit that this is somewhat of a nervous mix, but it’s also an honest one. and honesty has been pushing its way to the forefront of my life lately, which is a good thing.

some may recognize the gravelly voiced brother speaking on “social narcotics” over squarepusher. that’s bama the village poet. dj shadow sampled the intro for “social narcotics” for his own “in/flux” piece a while back. it’s a dynamite piece, but “nothingness” remains my favorite from bama’s album. misterjon’s “gratis” is off the ultimate dilemma label in london. joint’s from 1996, but it’s still one of the grimiest beats i’ve ever heard. the way the piano’s chopped up just kills me. both khromozomes and the prunes are from new york’s new breed label, an imprint that specialized in killer hip-hop instruentals for the better part of the mid-’90s. nobody was touching them. the prunes reminded me that the rough, rugged and real can come from anywhere in the world (they’re a trio of producers outta denmark).

the freddy fresh record remains a bit of a mystery to me. it’s a 10″ single from fresh’s own label (catalog number FRESH 002), the only distinctive thing about it being a crude drawing of a hick shouting “yew’r a sissy” to some mustache-donning gentleman at the turntables wearing sunglasses and a bandanna around his neck. think it came out in either 1999 or 2000.

very happy that i was able to track that karriem riggins cut down – been in love with it ever since he dropped it in a dj set at last year’s hella international party at the winter music conference. if anyone has any idea when material from the supreme team (riggins/madlib collaboration) is going to be released, please let me know. don’t be surprised if you hear more from las flores project on this show – their colores y memorias album is one of the most beautiful downtempo releases i’ve heard in the past five years. i continue to swear by caural’s stars on my ceiling album. “all these todays…” is the opening cut. prefuse 73’s “last light” is the musical accompaniment to every crush i ever had in junior high school.

the diego cortez piece will probably be a strange choice to some people, but i find it beautiful and haunting and something that doesn’t leave you once you hear it. cortez recorded the piano part first, then the cornet player (butch morris) did his part after listening to what cortez committed to tape. so the interplay between them never actually happened: dj spooky made their solos fit together. i am of the opinion that cortez’s stuzzicadenti album is spooky’s finest moment behind the production board. a five-star album from beginning to end.

there’s lots that i could talk about here, but i don’t wanna bore you to death. the mix is a little off the beaten path, but hopefully it’s something that you can enjoy. thank you for listening…

1. mike ladd – libations
2. plaid – llasas
3. missy elliott – the rain (supa dupa fly – acapella)
4. squarepusher – plaistow flex out
5. bama the village poet – nothingness
6. misterjon – gratis
7. dream warriors – you think i don’t know
this is me getting used to the new mixer in my house after not having one for at least a year and a half.nbsp; i hadn't touched a pair of turntables in what seemed like forever.nbsp; i didn't want there to be a whole lot of planning although i did have certain songs and blends in mind.nbsp; i just hit record and went for it.nbsp; everything between plaid and hrvatski was one take.nbsp; mike ladd and diego cortex were added on as bookends later.nbsp; i'll admit that this is somewhat of a nervous mix, but it's also an honest one.nbsp; and honesty has been pushing its way to the forefront of my life lately, which is a good thing.

some may recognize the gravelly voiced brother speaking on "social narcotics" over squarepusher.nbsp; that's bama the village poet.nbsp; dj shadow sampled the intro for "social narcotics" for his own "in/flux" piece a while back.nbsp; it's a dynamite piece, but "nothingness" remains my favorite from bama's album.nbsp; misterjon's "gratis" is off the ultimate dilemma label in london.nbsp; joint's from 1996, but it's still one of the grimiest beats i've ever heard.nbsp; the way the piano's chopped up just kills me.nbsp; both khromozomes and the prunes are from new york's new breed label, an imprint that specialized in killer hip-hop instruentals for the better part of the mid-'90s.nbsp; nobody was touching them.nbsp; the prunes reminded me that the rough, rugged and real can come from anywhere in the world (they're a trio of producers outta denmark).

the freddy fresh record remains a bit of a mystery to me.nbsp; it's a 10" single from fresh's own label (catalog number FRESH 002), the only distinctive thing about it being a crude drawing of a hick shouting "yew'r a sissy" to some mustache-donning gentleman at the turntables wearing sunglasses and a bandanna around his neck.nbsp; think it came out in either 1999 or 2000.

very happy that i was able to track that karriem riggins cut down - been in love with it ever since he dropped it in a dj set at last year's hella international party at the winter music conference.nbsp; if anyone has any idea when material from the supreme team (riggins/madlib collaboration) is going to be released, please let me know.nbsp; don't be surprised if you hear more from las flores project on this show - their colores y memorias album is one of the most beautiful downtempo releases i've heard in the past five years.nbsp; i continue to swear by caural's stars on my ceiling album.nbsp; "all these todays..." is the opening cut.nbsp; prefuse 73's "last light" is the musical accompaniment to every crush i ever had in junior high school.

the diego cortez piece will probably be a strange choice to some people, but i find it beautiful and haunting and something that doesn't leave you once you hear it.nbsp; cortez recorded the piano part first, then the cornet player (butch morris) did his part after listening to what cortez committed to tape.nbsp; so the interplay between them never actually happened:nbsp; dj spooky made their solos fit together.nbsp; i am of the opinion that cortez's stuzzicadenti album is spooky's finest moment behind the production board.nbsp; a five-star album from beginning to end.

there's lots that i could talk about here, but i don't wanna bore you to death.nbsp; the mix is a little off the beaten path, but hopefully it's something that you can enjoy.nbsp; thank you for listening...

1.nbsp; mike ladd - libations
2.nbsp; plaid - llasas
3.nbsp; missy elliott - the rain (supa dupa fly - acapella)
4.nbsp; squarepusher - plaistow flex out
5.nbsp; bama the village poet - nothingness
6.nbsp; misterjon - gratis
7.nbsp; dream warriors - you think i don't know
8.nbsp; gescom - leritue (gibber mix)
9.nbsp; antipop consortium - lift (acapella)

It’s beans tim, but not as we know it:

This week the show takes an alternative direction in somuch as I have a guest in the studio with me, the delightfully cheerful Flevans. You can find out more about him on either of these sites: http://www.myspace.com/flevansmusic or http://www.flevans.co.uk or take the more logical path of actually listening to the show. The choice is yours.

I’ve not bothered to compile a playlist as the two of us are babbling so much but I can tell you that there are some good tunes by Quincy Jones, Ty, Hereldeduke, Luke Vibert, Max Romeo, the Jazz and Milk label, Blue Mitchell, Backini, Kira Neris, Juggaknots and of course Flevans himself.

Feedback would be grand as he and I have discussed doing a regular radio show together at some point in the not too distant future. Obviously this will have a different format to this particular show as there are only so many times I can ask him questions before it gets annoying. Anyway, enough waffling – there’s plenty of it on the show…

Enjoy!

PS – Beans will be back with the standard 96% music format next week

“daylight savings adjustment…”
transmitting from mount vernon, new york, usa

awake from winter hibernation and ready to spring ahead with the rest of the universe. no big concept or anything like that this time around…just playing some tunes and having some fun. starting off with the unstoppable shawn lee (why do i see myself doing an entire show based solely on his work?), then diving into some beats and rhymes and other odds and ends. note the pair of joints from brothers and systems circa 1992: the transcontinental weekend album is one of my desert island picks. both happy mondays and pop will eat itself come straight off the cassette. anybody remember when the term “mixtape” still meant cassettes? anyone?

newness comes in the form of n.a.s.a., the nat king cole and femi kuti remixes, and a killer closer from somalia’s finest, k’naan (make one pirate joke and i may have to cyber-slap you…). i’m making up for lost time and it starts with this episode. hope you enjoy it…
