This weekend will see the second Wirral Hundred road race meeting of 2014 at Anglesey Circuit. The club have been racing at Anglesey since 1992 and this weekend they are doing something very different – they are in effect running two one-day events, using the 1.55 mile Coastal Circuit on Saturday and the 2.10 mile International Circuit on Sunday. The mid-summer date should hopefully provide fine weather, a good crowd and exciting, fast and safe racing.

The format of the racing will follow the well-tested ‘Racing for Sport’ formula, the intention being to give the riders and spectators as much track action as possible in the available time. The intention is to keep the riders busy this weekend, with all of them getting at least four 12.5 mile races – some will be in six or seven races or more!

The majority of the club championship contenders will be in attendance, intent on improving their championship positions. In the 100-500cc All-comers and 650 Twins classes Keith Jackson and Craig Beggs respectively have established decent championship leads, but in all of the other classes, things are very tight.

Simon Napier and Jamie Devine currently head the Formula 600 standings, separated only by half a point after four races. It is equally tight in the Powerbikes class with only three points between John Robb, Steven Jones and Johnny Blackshaw, and the prospect of fourth placed Ian Mackman returning to action after illness and the Isle of Man TT and being at the sharp-end again.

Local lad Barry Evans from Amlwch is involved in two tight tussles – he leads Chris Ganderton, also from Amlwch, by two points in the Pre-Injection class, and Tim Bradley by four points in the Golden Era Supersport class.

The sidecar races this weekend will be swelled by crews competing in the Formula Sidecar Racing Association 350 and Post Classic Sidecar Championships, which recognise and encourage the riders and passengers keen on keeping ‘older’ outfits on track. Past performances have shown that the men to beat are Joe Heys & Marc Maier (F350) and Pat Gallagher & Sean Rooney (Post-Classic).

Additional attractions are the 15 minute Parades (Saturday at 1.30pm, Sunday at 1pm) and the display of some superb examples of Classic Motorcycles adjacent to the Bar area throughout the weekend. Sincere thanks to the owners / riders and in particular the Anglesey classic bike enthusiasts for providing such great nostalgia.

I’ve owned a couple of pairs of Kevlar jeans, from expensive high end brands to ones you get at the bike show for a fraction of the cost. But until recently I always thought you get what you paid for, my Berik and Draggin were a higher cost but gave a comfortable fit and had plenty of protection. The bike show jeans on the other hand were thin and only had minimal protection and no armour.

Oxford Super Sliders Reinforced Jeans

I’ve been wearing a pair of these for a few months now, and have to say they are amazing. Quality, Style, Comfort and Protection the Super Sliders are built to a quality similar to the jeans I have paid considerably more for.

The model I have are the SS2 Dark Denim colour, even after a couple of washes they have held their colour and shape particularly well. So much that out of my bike wardrobe these are the jeans I select first.

Here’s some stats direct from Oxford on them:

100% Kevlar panels double-stitched into key locations, generously sculpted to the shape of the jean and stitched into a triple seam at the sides – this is the most likely point of heavy impact

Supplied with shock-absorbing knee protectors approved to CE EN 1621-1

Comfortable mesh pockets for knee protectors

Proper heavy duty fly zip are used, not fiddly buttons

Kevlar is cut longer at the back and double-stitched to prevent it riding up on impact.

Large aperture pockets are much better suited to motorcycling

In Summary

These jeans are an amazing safety product that feel comfortable whilst having the kevlar panels and CE knee armour in positions that are comfortable for both riding and off the bike.

What are Motorcycle Riggers?

Riggers are essentially braces that Motorcycle riders wear to ensure a good fit on their protective trousers when riding.

New designs

The 5 new designs featured to the right show that Oxford have put their own touch to the traditional riggers and as ever are providing a high quality product at an affordable price.

Are they any good?

Riggers are popular with all aspects of riders, although more suited to those doing touring or wearing textile trousers, these new riggers have been equipped with an all-new extra strong clip setup that will ensure even heavy leather trousers will be held in position.

How much do they cost?

The RRP on Oxford Riggers is just £19.99, so if you are one of the lucky ones who have managed to shift a few pounds since you bought your bike trousers, or simply looking for a more secure fit these are an investment that isn’t going to pull your pants down!

Licence required to ride an Electric powered scooter / motorcycle UK

Restricted to 30mph Electric Scooter / Motorcycle

The same rules apply to riding a petrol powered vehicle, CBT licence is required and no pillion passengers, you must also stick to non-Motorway roads.
If you passed your car licence before December 2001 you can ride this size engine without having to do a CBT.

30+ mph Electric Scooter / Motorcycle

All riders of these Electric Scooters / Motorcycles need to have a CBT certificate. The same rules to L plates, pillions and motorways still apply.
There is also a power limit of 11Kw/14.6bhp, no doubt electric scooter and motorcycles will fast become more powerful so this restriction keeps riding the more powerful bikes to fully licensed riders only.

Motorbike Theory Test

The dreaded theory test, the classroom exam that sits between you and the open road – well that the the practical test, but most people seem to have a real fear of the theory than actually riding a motorcycle.

What is involved?

The UK Motorbike Theory Test involves two stages, both based on safe motorcycle and road use according to the Highway code.

Multiple choice test – 50 randomly selected questions, all are multiple choice consisting of a written or visual question. Some questions may require multiple answers to be selected.

Hazard perception test – You now have to watch 14 one minute clips and click the mouse when you notice a hazard developing.

What do I need to pass?

Multiple choice test requires a minimum of 43 out of 50 to pass.

Hazard perception requires a score of 44, each clip will contain one or two hazards, the sooner you click to identify the hazard the higher the score you will get, scores per hazard start at 5 and reduce as the hazard becomes more obvious.

When will I get my results?

No more waiting around, as the tests are computer based you are able to get your results on the day of your test.

I passed both parts, now what?

You have two years to pass the practical test from the date you passed your first theory exam. Fail to pass within this timescale will require you taking both elements again.

OK, this is not motorbike related but had nowhere else to post my latest addition to the family.

I bought an 09 1 Series BMW E87 the other day, and love it.

One thing that I it was missing was a decent entertainment, sat nav, bluetooth system so I treated myself to one from eBay.
It’s a Chinese build Windows CE (WinCE) system and has been skinned to boot with the BMW logo and look like the BMW idrive system, but all touch screen.

I must say I am very impressed with this system and wanted to show the steps for installing the stereo, and I’ve also upgraded the sat nav software from Sygic 10 to iGo Primo which is a great move.

Out of the box

A quick snap shot of how you can expect to receive your head unit, it’s well packaged and contains an instruction manual that entertained the kids for a few seconds.

Lots of cables and a remote for the DVD player which I’m yet to use as it’s all touchscreen from what I’ve needed to do.

Installing the Drive

Duration 1 hour approx

I imagine you should remove the battery first, but I didn’t and managed not to pop any fuses.

Remove the bottom panel that holds the Auto Start Stop engine button and the heated seats buttons if you have them (I don’t have heated seats ), slip your hand under the bottom and gently pull away from the two supporting rivets that hold the bottom in place.

Removing the AC control unit is a little bit more tricky, you are trying to remove the whole thing, not just the surrounding panel. I had to use a screwdriver covered in a cloth to gently pop the left hand side out.

Two screws out and the existing head unit is free.

Disconnect the existing head unit by pulling up the rocker arm to release it from the back of the stereo. Then push in and pull away the aerial connection – and you’re free.

Leave those blue tabs in place on the BMW side of the connector, I thought they had to come out but they stay in place and the spade connectors fit in perfectly.

Jiggle the wires around a bit and run your USB, iPod and GPS into the glove box, there is a small gap at the side of the dash and you can then run them down to the bottom of the glove box and in just inside of the hinge – Smart.

Push the head unit in to place and it will click in, no screws to hold it in.

Here’s the tricky bit

You now need to cut the two plastic clips that previously held the AC panel into the dash, the new lower position is thinner. I cut them off with a knife and came off pretty easy.

Now you are ready to fit the AC panel in to the new lower panel, I tucked away the old button panel for heated seats and Auto Start Stop behind, I know where they are if I need them again!

Heres a tip, the bottom of this panel has two triangle prongs, these don’t fit into the holes of the old bottom panel, so pop your screwdriver in and remove the two silver sockets and your new panel will clip in nicely.

Mine has a slight dip between the stereo on and the AC but it’s hardly noticeable and if I take anything apart again in the future I will try and resolve this.

Power up and you should be up and running – SIMPLE.

Standard functionality

Out of the box installation results in a great system, I’ve played avi and mp3 files drive from an 8GB usb drive stored in the glove box. Played music direct from Spotify via A2DP and the radio signal has been pretty solid for the times I have been using it.

The DVD or media players continue to work as you drive, and even allow Picture in Picture (PiP) so you can have Sat Nav and a film displaying at the same time. I personally stick to music as I wouldn’t want it to distract me whilst driving.

Updating the Sat Nav

Updating the sat nav for me was one of the most important features, I’m planning on driving in Europe later in the year and wanted to put new maps on at the least.

I started to look around for information on Sygic maps and found out that WinCE 6.0 sat nav systems have a lot of options for alternative software installations.

I tried the trial version of Sygic 12 but kept getting a Chinese error message around connecting to a modem??? so gave up on that and opted for iGo Primo, with 2013 maps.

Here’s the Video

A quick wobble phone cam of the system running the new iGo Primo sat nav system and the various functions.

Don’t worry about the ‘Initializing’ delay where I go to USB, this is due to it resuming an AVI video I had running from my glove box.

The touch screen is responsive, and the system runs fast enough for an in car entertainment system.

My Verdict

Love it, a great replacement system for any BMW or other owner (they probably do a similar setup for most cars) that is looking for a Sat Nav and entertainment system.

Future upgrades planned:

TV screen in the arm rest that can be lifted up for the kids to watch in the back

Reverse view camera, I believe this kicks in as soon as you go into reverse but not tested as yet.

**** UPDATES ****

Updated video showing button quality.
