That’s a trick, and I mean that as a compliment. Automakers have been using quicker steering and lighter effort to disguise mass since long before MINI existed. It’s not a new formula. What’s notable here is how far MINI leaned into it, not just at the wheel but everywhere: the throttle takes less effort to move too. The whole car has been tuned to feel like less work, and depending on what you want from a MINI, that’s either the point or the problem.

Where simplicity starts costing you something

We’ve written before about how good the new MINI OS actually is once you get past the bugs, and the new touchscreen genuinely handles a lot of complexity well. That’s not what I’m talking about here. I’m talking about the physical layer, the switchgear, or in this car’s case, the near-total absence of it.

The new Countryman has a clean, minimal cabin, and on its own that’s a good thing. But strip out physical controls for climate, seat heaters, and adaptive cruise following distance, and you’ve also stripped out the muscle memory drivers built up over years of not looking down to change them.

The distance buttons on cruise control are a good example: in the old car, closing or opening the gap to traffic ahead was a button press away. In the new one, it’s buried in a menu you have to actually look at. Add the classic rotary shifter’s disappearance in favor of a toggle switch, and there’s a real argument that MINI simplified its way into adding cognitive load rather than removing it.

None of this is a dealbreaker. Most of it you adapt to within a day or two, the same way you adapt to any new car’s quirks, MINI or otherwise. But it’s worth sitting with the question: is stripping out physical controls actually simplifying the experience, or just moving the complexity somewhere less convenient? MINI has always liked being a little quirky and a little unique. There’s nothing wrong with that instinct. The problem shows up when quirky collides with basic functions, like turning on a heated seat, and makes them harder instead of more charming.

A smoother gearbox that somehow feels slower

The bigger, more immediate difference is what’s behind the shifter, not the shifter itself. The old Clubman JCW runs an Aisin eight-speed torque-converter automatic, a classic automatic in the truest sense: real gears, a torque converter, no clutch packs pretending to be something else. The new Countryman runs a dual-clutch transmission instead, essentially a manual gearbox that automates itself by pre-selecting the next gear while you’re still in the current one, which lets it swap ratios almost instantly.

Day to day, the DCT wins easily. It’s smooth in a way that flatters the rest of the car, and our review of the automatic Countryman S called it buttery smooth for a reason: it will actually downshift ahead of a corner using GPS and nav data, anticipating what you’re about to ask of it before you ask. That’s genuinely impressive, and it’s the kind of engineering that makes the new Countryman feel like the most refined MINI ever built, which is exactly what we said when we spent a full week with one.

Here’s the part that surprises people, though. The Aisin eight-speed isn’t just good, it might be the best classic torque-converter automatic MINI has ever offered. It’s not perfect: there’s real lurch when you try to control it manually, and it can be jerky shifting up or down in Sport mode. But under hard acceleration, snapping off full-throttle shifts, it’s honestly quicker than the new DCT. So you end up with this strange dichotomy: the new car feels smoother in everyday driving, but takes a small step backward in outright shift speed when you’re actually pushing it. Smoothness and speed aren’t the same thing, and MINI picked smoothness.

The Shift Paddle Problem

Then there’s the bigger issue, and it’s not subtle. Unless you’re in a JCW, or a market where the JCW Style pack is available on the Countryman, you don’t get shift paddles in the new car at all. Order a Countryman S, or a base Countryman, and you’re just along for the ride with no ability to hold a gear yourself. That’s not a big deal for everyone. It’s a big deal for me, and for anyone who actually enjoys the interactivity of picking your own gear on a passing maneuver or an on-ramp.

We flagged this exact limitation when it first showed up, and we’ve since argued that even where paddles do exist, they need a rethink: the hardware is capable of much sharper responses than MINI currently allows. To its credit, MINI USA has moved on part of this. The JCW Style Package now brings paddles back to the Cooper S hardtop and convertible for a modest $1,200. The Countryman hasn’t gotten the same treatment. If you want to shift your own gears in the new Countryman, full JCW trim is still the only door in.

Which Would We Choose?

We’re deliberately not talking performance here, since the JCW and the S sit in different performance classes entirely, and we’re not talking software, because that’s an entirely separate rabbit hole that we recently touched on. This is about the physical experience: what it feels like to sit in these two cars, touch their controls, and drive them back to back.

Has MINI nailed this generation, or gone too far chasing newness for its own sake? Honestly, it depends on what you’re shopping for. If you want the classic MINI experience, tactile, a little demanding, rewarding you for engaging with it, the new Countryman will feel like it’s asking you to give some of that up. If you want a genuinely excellent daily driver, one where the physical inputs mostly disappear so the car just does what you ask, smoothly and without drama, the new Countryman is exactly that car, and arguably the best one MINI has built for that use-case.

It’s not that the new Countryman isn’t fun. It’s that fun looks different here. The friction that used to define driving a MINI, the stuff you had to work for, has mostly been engineered away. Some people will call that progress. Others will call it the thing they came to MINI to avoid in the first place.

The program is run in partnership with LAP Motorsports, which we covered when the deal was first announced back in November. MINI hadn’t fielded a serious rally effort in the U.S. in years, so a full factory-backed return, confirmed officially in February, was the kind of move that reads better on paper once it survives contact with an actual season. Six rounds in, it mostly has.

Two cars, two classes. David and Drew Quillen campaign a John Cooper Works 2-Door in Open 2-Wheel Drive, while Luis Perocarpi and Carlos Schrunder run a John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4 in Limited 4-Wheel Drive. Different cars, different problems to solve on loose surface, and that split has turned out to be one of the smarter parts of this program: it gives MINI two ways to be right in the same weekend instead of betting the whole entry on one setup.

The season itself has had shape, not just mileage. It opened with a podium at Sno*Drift in February, which is the best possible way to answer skepticism about a comeback effort. March brought a trip to the 100 Acre Wood, and April brought a stumble: the team finished outside the top three at Olympus Rally, a result that mattered more for what it revealed than for where it landed in the standings. A season that only shows up in photo finishes isn’t a season, it’s a highlight reel. Olympus was the reminder that this is still a program working out its footing on stages that don’t forgive.

By July, the answer looked better. Ahead of Rally Colorado, the team talked about consistency, and then backed it up with another class podium. That’s two podiums against one off weekend through five rounds, which is a respectable ratio for a first year back, and it’s the kind of trend line that makes round six worth watching rather than just noting.

Ojibwe Forest brings 143 competitive miles of fast, flowing terrain, higher-gear sections mixed with narrow access roads, rocks, and ruts that punish a car that isn’t set up right. Driver Luis Perocarpi framed it plainly ahead of the event: both the 2-Door and the Countryman ALL4 have consistently shown their performance and toughness across the season. It’s not a flashy line, but it’s the correct one. Toughness is the unglamorous variable that decides rally championships, not outright pace on the one stage that makes the highlight reel.

There’s an obvious temptation to lean on MINI’s Monte Carlo history every time the brand shows up on loose surface, and it’s worth resisting that a little here. This isn’t the Works team chasing overall wins against the world’s best in the 1960s, it’s a domestic club-level effort finding its footing eight years after MINI last had a serious presence in American rally. The comparison that actually matters is a narrower one: does this program look like something built to last past 2026, or a one-off marketing exercise timed to a new Countryman. Two podiums, one hard lesson, and a car program split intelligently across two drivetrain classes is more evidence for the former than the latter.

Two rounds remain after this weekend: Overmountain Rally in Tennessee in September, then Lake Superior Performance Rally in October to close the year. Neither the Quillens nor the Perocarpi and Schrunder pairing needs a win at Ojibwe Forest to validate the season. What they need is what they’ve mostly delivered so far: finish, don’t break the car, and let the podiums come from attrition and consistency rather than heroics. That’s a less romantic story than a stage win, but it’s the one that gets a factory program renewed for another year.

These photos change that. Instead of being shot at a German airfield, they were taken in the Alps. The car was driven on roads that closely resemble the ones Timo Mäkinen and Paul Easter navigated during their journey to the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally victory. The rally’s mountain stages traversed precisely this type of terrain, characterized by varying elevations, switchbacks, and unpredictable weather conditions. A press studio may not be able to assess the effectiveness of a livery, but a hairpin above the treeline can provide a definitive answer.

It does, mostly. The Chili Red holds its saturation at altitude in a way white or silver specials often don’t, and the Glazed White roof and mirror caps read cleanly against both rock and sky rather than disappearing into overcast the way white-on-white MINIs sometimes do. Yes the White roof is back on JCWs, and seeing it here, you have to wonder why it ever left.

Why No. 52?

The number on the doors isn’t a design flourish, it’s the actual number. On January 21, 1965, Timo Mäkinen and co-driver Paul Easter crossed the Monte Carlo finish line in a 1,275cc Mini Cooper S, registration AJB 44B, wearing race number 52, with zero penalty points. BMW’s own archive still calls it a win by “a considerable margin,” which undersells how brutal getting there actually was. That year’s rally turned into attrition before it ever reached the mountains, 237 cars started, 35 finished, and the final stages ran through blizzard conditions so severe they earned their own nickname, the Night of the Long Knives. Mäkinen and Easter came through clean while cars carrying far more displacement slid off the road around them, a story we’ve told in full before. Put that history next to a modern Cooper S climbing the same kind of switchback in the same kind of weather, and the No. 52 badge stops being a costume and starts being a citation.

The details that photograph flat in a press kit hold up better out here too. The white stripe running bonnet to roof to rear is wide enough to read at speed, which matters on a car this small, and the entry sills carry their own “1965” lettering that you’d never notice in a spec sheet but catches the eye every time a door opens roadside. BMW’s release also mentions a dedication plaque on the inside of the door panel, a small, almost private detail for a car built to be seen. That’s a nice touch on a special edition that otherwise wears its history loudly.

Worth noting: this edition spans three drivetrains, Cooper S, John Cooper Works, and John Cooper Works Electric, so the livery has to work on a combustion hot hatch and a silent EV equally. Based on what’s here, it does.

The part of this story that actually matters, though, isn’t the paint. MINI has spent 2026 turning special editions into a genuine market puzzle, with some drops confined to a single country and others quietly regional. The 1965 Victory Edition is not one of those. BMW’s own release frames it as a global special edition, not a market-specific one, and the fact that it’s already been confirmed through MINI’s Portugal PressClub alongside the global rollout backs that up. If you’ve been burned before by a special edition that turned out to be a one-market flex, this one is built to actually show up at your dealer.

What’s still missing is the boring stuff that ends up mattering most: no production cap, no pricing, no confirmed on-sale date. For a car this clearly aimed at collectors and Monte Carlo nostalgists, that’s the information that will decide whether it’s a genuine limited run or just a well-marketed trim package. We’ll update when BMW does.

For now, the real-world photos do what the press kit couldn’t. They put a tribute to a rally car back on the kind of road it was actually built to survive, and it holds up.

Recently, I got some seat-time in an all-new 2026 Countryman S for some real-world testing. The intention wasn’t to focus on MINI OS9 – the operating system that powers the circular display and most of the car’s functionality. But as it turns out, that quickly became a big focus. 

I got in the car and immediately paired my iPhone and got CarPlay working. I set the designation in Google Maps and headed out. Then, I decided to switch over to MINI’s native interface instead, mostly because I like driving with the full circular display and the built in software has genuinely gotten good in places. Then all hell broke loose.

The CarPlay connection dropped. The podcast I’d been listening to went silent, on my phone and in the car. I restarted the phone. I restarted the car. Nothing. I fell back to straight Bluetooth, old school. I thought, ok, this isn’t bad. I get to experience MINI’s native audio player without CarPlay. Then I turned navigation back on and audio cut out entirely, the display still showing a track playing that no speaker in the car would produce. This is MINI OS9 in the summer of 2026, two years after this generation of Cooper and Countryman reached driveways, and it is still not the finished infotainment system MINI told us it would be.

The Good, The Bad, The Bugs

None of this is new. It’s the same list we were writing about when OS9 launched: CarPlay dropping out mid drive, Bluetooth that won’t hold a pairing, audio that stops working and doesn’t tell you why. These are the kind of infotainment problems that used to define the bottom tier of the industry, not a flagship system two years into its life. What’s changed is the excuse. A brand new operating system stumbling in its first year is forgivable, expected even. A system still doing this in year two, on hardware that’s been in customer hands the whole time, is something else.

It’s not just audio though. OS9 is still slow, and the interface still fights you more than it should. There’s a rigidity to how it’s structured, a systematic, expected interaction pattern for everything, and that consistency is part of what we’ve always liked about it. Unfortunately, this the case of OS9, that also means too many common tasks take too many steps. Yes, there are shortcuts. The star button on the steering wheel pulls up a shortlist, and a drag up from the bottom of the screen does the same. They’re genuinely useful, and we’ve written a full guide to using them well. But shortcuts shouldn’t be the thing standing between an owner and basic sluggishness. You shouldn’t need a workaround for software that’s supposed to already be finished.

Less Progress Than Expected

We saw this coming, three years ago in June of 2023. MINI flew a group of us to Munich, sat us down under NDA in a dark room, and showed us OS9 for the first time, months before anyone got to see it. It was early beta software but the promise was there. But you could see what they were building, and it was genuinely exciting, enough that my first look at that circular display leaned optimistic despite the visible unfinished edges. It was built on the same foundation as BMW’s software and was designed to be updated early and often to fix bugs and add features. The idea was that MINI would push updates aggressively. The bugs would leave. The sluggishness would disappear. We’d end up with a great system.

Our early CarPlay review flagged real problems but stayed patient, because MINI kept shipping updates and the trajectory looked right. We covered the functionality boosts. We covered the over the air updates as they landed. Each one felt like evidence of progress. Sitting in this car in 2026, it feels like that progress has stalled.

Hardware or Software?

This isn’t a hardware complaint, and that’s what makes it more frustrating, not less. The Snapdragon platform underpinning OS9’s digital architecture was pitched to us at launch as more than powerful enough to keep everything smooth and to future proof the system for years of updates. Whatever happened between that pitch and what’s running in cars today, the result in 2026 is a system that still stutters on tasks it should handle without effort. The technical stack seemingly is good. None of this should be hard to iterate on with the right team and the right infrastructure behind it. That’s precisely why it’s so surprising these deficiencies are still here.

What MINI needs to do from here

MINI needs a real and transparent plan to fix the sluggishness and obvious bugs in the software. The kind you’d expect from a software company rather than an automaker that happens to ship software. Two plus years into this car’s life, we’ve gotten scattered functionality additions and presumably some bug fixes, but the core complaints from day one, CarPlay issues, overall sluggishness, an interface that can feel overly complex under pressure, are unchanged. If you bought a Cooper or Countryman with this interface two and a half years ago and have been living with it ever since, you’ve probably gotten proficient with its quirks. But proficiency isn’t the same as trust, and the underlying frustration with the system itself doesn’t go away just because you’ve learned to route around it. That kind of low grade frustration is corrosive, to the ownership experience and, over time, to the brand.

Here’s the part that stings. MINI’s mechanical reliability has genuinely turned around, climbing from the bottom of the industry rankings toward the top five in recent years, which is a real accomplishment for a brand that spent a long time living down its reputation. But as these cars have become more software defined, with more of the ownership experience routed through that circular screen, MINI has fallen into the same trap so many automakers have: building the car like a car and not building the software like a product. The apps most of us actually enjoy using ship fixes constantly, add functionality constantly, and generally get better with age. OS9 hasn’t shown that pattern, and it’s fair to wonder what that does to customer satisfaction, and to how the brand is perceived, over the next few years.

It’s Time for OS9 to Mature

Early on, we gave OS9 real grace, because we could see it iterating fast and trending in the right direction, and that made it easy to note the problems and move past them. We can’t turn a blind eye in 2026.

As I write this, my podcast is playing but no sound coming from the car’s speakers despite the screen insisting otherwise. So I’ve moved to the last resort – I’m not listening to audio from my iPhone’s own speaker. A few miles later I get it to work, but at only 10% volume with the car’s volume turned up to 100%. Yes it’s a first world problem. But it’s the glaring, absurd bug that makes an owner want to give up and trade the car in.

So I give up and I soldier on for the next three hours listening through my phone’s speaker. As I turns out, it’s more reliable than MINI OS9.

Start with the part that’s genuinely good news. as recently as 2023 MINI ranked 3rd in overall quality for new cars. And for most of the outgoing F55/F56 generation, CR’s verdict on the Cooper never moved: the 2021, 2022, and 2023 model years all landed at “about average reliability compared to other cars from the same model year.” Average isn’t bad, but it’s not the story anyone tells about a MINI. The redesigned Cooper broke that pattern. Based on 2025 model year subscriber survey data, CR now rates it “more reliable than other cars from the same model year,” and carries that same prediction into the 2026 model. That’s a real, measurable shift at the model level, not just better PR.

Where It Started

The R50 and R53 are excellent drivers’ cars, and the R56 isn’t far behind. They’re also ground zero for MINI’s reliability problems, and the causes were structural, not a matter of build quality. The R50’s Tritec engine, built in Brazil with Chrysler, wasn’t BMW standard. The Midlands gearbox was fragile, and rustproofing was lax. The R56’s Prince engine, developed with PSA, had well documented timing chain and cooling issues that became a defining topic in the MINI community. These weren’t teething problems, they were the failures that shaped a generation’s view of the brand.

We noted as early as 2005 that Consumer Reports had reversed its unreliable verdict on the MINI, a moment that proved temporary once the R56 era reset the clock. By 2011, MINI was dead last again in J.D. Power’s Dependability Study, a painful but honest result. Service bays were busy places.

Where It Stands Now

Start with the part that’s genuinely good news. For most of the outgoing F55/F56 generation, CR’s verdict on the Cooper never moved: the 2021, 2022, and 2023 model years all landed at “about average reliability compared to other cars from the same model year.” Average isn’t bad, but it’s not the story anyone tells about a MINI. The redesigned Cooper broke that pattern. Based on 2025 model year subscriber survey data, CR now rates it “more reliable than other cars from the same model year,” and carries that same prediction into the 2026 model. That’s a real, measurable shift at the model level, not just better PR.

Now the part that complicates it. In Consumer Reports’ broader “Which Brands Make the Best Cars” ranking, the one that combines road test performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety, MINI has actually slipped. It sat 8th of 32 brands in the 2022 edition. In the latest edition, published in December 2025 and covering the 2026 model year, MINI sits 11th of 31, with an Overall Score of 72, unchanged in rank from the year before. Three spots down over a few years isn’t a crisis, but it’s the opposite direction of what the model-level reliability data alone would suggest. Here’s how MINI stacks up against the rest of the current field:

The Confusing Part

MINI and BMW carry the identical “Average” predicted reliability rating on this table, the same tier as Tesla, Kia, and Acura. The ten point gap between the two brands isn’t a reliability story at all, it comes almost entirely from BMW’s Road-Test score, 89 versus MINI’s 77. Whatever separates them, it isn’t how often either one breaks.

The stranger data point is CR’s separate, narrower reliability-only study, the one that produces headlines like “who makes the most reliable cars.” That study has a qualification rule: a brand needs data on at least two models across the 2023, 2024, 2025, or early 2026 model years to be ranked at all. In the most recent edition, MINI isn’t on the list. It’s named specifically, alongside Porsche, Land Rover, and a handful of others, as a brand that didn’t meet that minimum. Some MINI owners and forums have pointed to an earlier CR result, reportedly from late 2023, that had MINI ranked as high as third on that same style of reliability list. We couldn’t independently confirm that specific historical ranking directly from CR, so treat it as unverified, but if it’s accurate, the honest version of MINI’s trajectory on this particular study isn’t third to eleventh. It’s third to not ranked at all. What happened? The most likely explanation is mundane rather than alarming: MINI’s lineup turned over almost completely between 2024 and 2026, and CR simply doesn’t have enough multi-year survey history on the new generation yet to include it.

So what’s actually dragging the brand-level numbers down while the model-level reliability genuinely improves. CR’s own road test of the redesigned Cooper is specific about it, and unusually blunt for a brand it’s simultaneously praising on reliability. Testers flagged the controls directly: they’re “very confusing and distracting,” a complaint that lines up with the current generation’s decision to move nearly everything into the round central OLED display rather than leaving it on physical switchgear. The dual-clutch automatic “shifts quickly but suffers from some low-speed hiccups,” the kind of low-speed clunkiness that shows up in stop and go traffic rather than on a back road. And the ride and handling verdict is a real trade-off, not a wash: “handling is super-agile, but the ride is very stiff and choppy.” CR’s testers were split on how much that trade-off is worth, one called the ride “the worst aspect of this car by far,” another called the redesigned Cooper “the most faithful to the one we originally tested about 20 years ago, and better in almost every way.” Taken together, the road test actually scored a few points lower than the previous generation’s test, even as the reliability prediction moved up.

Our Take

Put it all together and the real picture is messier than either a triumph or a decline. MINI has quietly fixed the thing it was actually bad at, mechanical durability is no longer the obvious sore spot it was for most of the last decade. But that improvement hasn’t yet shown up in the rankings that matter most to a shopper doing a five minute comparison, because the brand-level score is dragged down by real usability complaints, and the reliability-only study that would otherwise confirm the good news can’t currently rank MINI at all. That’s not a story about MINI getting worse. It’s a story about a brand mid-transition, with better bones than it’s getting credit for, and a user experience that has introduced complexity to some owners that weren’t ready for it. Whether the rankings catch up before the next redesign, or whether MINI fixes the controls and the ride before that happens, is the more interesting question, and it’s not one Consumer Reports can answer for another model year or two.

That next generation is further off than it once looked, which is exactly why this is worth thinking through now rather than waiting on it. The NE5, the Neue Klasse based successor to the U25, was originally targeted for production as early as November 2028. That date has since slipped to around 2032, stretching the current U25’s run to roughly eight years, a year longer than is typical for a BMW built model. In the meantime, both the combustion and EV Countryman are set for a design driven LCI expected in late 2027 or early 2028, following a smaller EV focused hardware update in March 2026. So the current U25 face, angular headlights and all, has real runway left before MINI has any reason to touch it again.

What if the Countryman actually looked like a MINI? Round headlights instead of the U25’s angular units. A face a little friendlier, a little less aggressive, more in keeping with the brand’s design ethos than with the crossover class it now runs in. It’s a fair question to ask, mostly because MINI has spent three generations steering the Countryman further away from the answer.

MINI differentiated the Countryman on purpose, and for a while the differences were mostly proportion, not vocabulary. The R60 was the brand’s first genuine second body style in 2010, the first four door, the first car in the lineup with ALL4 all wheel drive, and it needed room the three door hatch could never offer. It still wore round headlights, in keeping with every hatch MINI has built since 1959, and a grille sized closer to the family norm. The F60 grew nearly 8 inches over the R60 in 2017 and kept that same round eyed face. The current U25 is the generation that broke the pattern in both directions at once: another 5.5 inches added on top of the F60, a genuinely dramatic jump in height, a move to BMW’s FAAR platform shared with the X1 and X2, and, for the first time on any Countryman, a squared off face with headlights raked into hard, angular shapes that share nothing with the round housings on the Cooper hatch parked next to it in the showroom. I wrote at the time that we were worried the U25 would feel “a touch larger and, ultimately, a touch less MINI,” and having spent real time in it since, I stand by that. It is an excellent small SUV. Whether it is a MINI in the way the hatch is a MINI is a separate question, and one the brand has mostly declined to answer.

Here is what gets lost in translation. The hatch’s design language works because every design decision reflects the brand’s history: short overhangs that put the wheels right at the corners of the car, an upright greenhouse, a strong beltline, a hexagonal grille sized to the car around it, and round, friendly headlights that have been the brand’s signature since the original Issigonis car. The Countryman inherits some of that vocabulary, but not the brand’s most iconic elements. In fact, the U25 has moved further from that classic MINI design language than any Countryman before it, with an aggressive face and angular headlights leading the charge. In some ways, the current Countryman feels like the antithesis of MINI’s own look. Going further, you can credibly argue that by walking away from it, MINI is leaving some of the brand equity it has built over more than 60 years on the table. Swap the round lights for angular ones, and the result stops reading as cheeky and starts reading as generic small crossover, which is a real category and not a compliment when the whole brand promise is “not that.”

So here is the exercise, and the two renders above are where it landed. The whole shape gets sharper: the surfacing on the hood, fenders and doors picks up harder, more deliberate creases than the softer, rounder panels the U25 wears today, closer to the crisper character lines MINI has been moving towards. The wheel arches stay flared and clad in black, but the panels between them read more chiseled, more purposeful.

But we didn’t just create a single version – we created two. The version on the left is roughly the same size as the current U25 Countryman and if we’re honest, the one we prefer. But we wondered what it might look like if MINI stretched the Countryman even further – something they’ve done with every generation. This larger version stretches the body and adds more rear overhang increasing luggage space. Effectively it’s trading MINI-like proportions back for the room and presence a longer wheelbase buys. What ties both versions back to MINI, more than the sheet metal, is the face: a single round lamp per side paired with the vertical LED accent strip that emphasizes both the height and width.

The result doesn’t look like the R60, and it isn’t supposed to. What changes is that the surfacing and the face now read as considered rather than default, closer to what a Countryman would look like if MINI’s design team had started from the hatch’s vocabulary instead of a generic crossover brief.

The honest counterargument here is strategy, not just cost. MINI’s 2024 design refresh drew a fairly deliberate line between the round lamped core cars, the Cooper hatch and JCW, and the squared off crossover cars, Countryman and Aceman. That is a real piece of brand architecture, not an accident: it lets a shopper cross-shop an X1 or a Q3 without the Countryman reading as a shrunken hatch pretending to be an SUV, and it gives MINI’s design team two distinct faces to work with instead of one stretched thin across five very different bodies. Putting round headlights and sharper surfacing back on the Countryman blurs that distinction on purpose. Whether that is a price worth paying depends on how much the crossover buyer actually cares about looking like a crossover, versus how much they care about it looking like a MINI.

What the renders do surface is how dramatically the look of the Countryman could change by being more MINI-like. The reality, though, is that the coming LCI is likely to be a lighter touch than what’s pictured here. A mid-cycle facelift typically works within the existing body-in-white, so expect new lights, a revised grille, and updated bumpers and trim rather than the kind of panel-level reworking these renders show. What we see above, the sharper creases, a genuinely reworked face, the kind of design-first rethink pictured above, realistically has to wait for a ground-up redesign, which puts it on the NE5’s timeline rather than the 2027 or 2028 refresh. Whether MINI uses that opportunity to bring the round headlight back, or doubles down on the more aggressive face it introduced with the U25, is the more interesting question.

That’s not pure speculation, either. Holger Hampf, MINI’s head of design, has already signaled this exact instinct for the next Cooper hatch: he’s told Autocar the next generation’s design language will callback to the R50, the car whose 25th anniversary we spent much of this spring covering, and the car most enthusiasts under fifty actually think of as “the” MINI, rather than reaching all the way back to the 1959 original. If that same retro instinct reaches the Countryman by the time NE5 arrives, round headlights are exactly the kind of detail it would bring with it.

The transcript tells the full story and Autocar’s excellent write-up helps as well. But their framing of what it means is worth engaging with directly, because it lands on the exact tension we’ve been tracking in our own reporting on the next generation MINI: as BMW Group margins compress, how much MINI actually stays MINI.

Start with why the question got asked at all. BMW doesn’t break out Mini or Rolls-Royce financials, so analysts are left triangulating, but the group’s overall picture gives them plenty to work with. First-half group margin fell to 3.6% on China weakness, and a brand that’s structurally expensive to build starts looking like an obvious lever to pull. Mini is structurally expensive to build. The ICE hatchback and Convertible come out of Oxford, the Countryman out of Leipzig, both high labor cost plants by global standards, while the Cooper and Aceman EVs are built cheaply in China and then hit with EU tariffs designed to do exactly what they’re doing here: erase the cost advantage.

None of that squares with what Mini is actually doing in the market. Sales were up 12% in the first half to 149,535, carried by Countryman and Cooper hatchback demand, in a segment that keeps losing competitors rather than gaining them. Audi just walked away from the A1 entirely. Mini’s problem was never desirability. It’s that being good at a hard business doesn’t make the business less hard, and 37% of Mini’s first-half volume being electric only sharpens that: it’s the metric BMW brags about and the one quietly eating the brand’s margin while battery costs stay elevated.

ThIt’s what’s downstream of the profitability story that should be interesting to MINI fans. What will that profitability squeeze actually do to future product?

The clearest data point is the next Countryman. Our reporting on how the new BMW iX3 sets the stage for it laid out what Neue Klasse sharing actually looks like in practice: the platform, the sixth-generation eDrive motors, the processors, the modular battery architecture, all inherited wholesale from BMW’s new electrical architecture. MINI’s argument, and it’s not a bad one, is that proportions are what make a Mini a Mini, not what’s underneath it, and the brand gets to use the smaller end of the platform’s range to keep those proportions intact. Fair enough, except that same reporting noted the Neue Klasse Countryman got pushed from 2028 to 2032, four years where a car built to be distinctive has to make do with a platform tuned first for BMW.

Widen the lens and the pattern isn’t new, it’s just accelerating. MINI’s engineers reportedly floated giving the next generation its own dedicated platform back in 2018, a notion that read as ambitious even then and looks almost quaint now. The UKL architecture that actually arrived tied MINI and BMW’s small cars together from 2011 onward, and every generation since has been an argument about how much daylight is left between the two badges. We’ve also reported on the case for MINI’s electric future going rear-wheel drive, which would be a genuinely distinctive move for the brand, and it’s no coincidence that argument leans on the same BMW Gen6 hardware everything else in this story leans on. When your differentiation strategy and your cost-sharing strategy draw from the identical parts bin, the outcome depends entirely on how much the Group is willing to spend making the shared parts feel unshared. That’s not a technical question anymore. It’s a budget one, and BMW just told its shareholders the budget is tight.

It’s also worth noticing what Mini is being asked to do for the rest of the Group rather than to it. The brand went to direct sales in China back in 2023 (following suit in other markets), which makes Mini the test case for a cost-saving model the whole company is banking on. That’s not the profile of a division anyone is quietly planning to shut down. It’s the profile of one being asked to prove out expensive changes on a smaller balance sheet before the parent commits its own.

So no, Mini isn’t going anywhere, and Richmann’s wounded routine, sincere or not, was surely a bit tongue and cheek-. The company that just handed Mini its direct-sales pilot program isn’t the company about to fold it. But “BMW won’t kill Mini” and “BMW will keep Mini distinctive” are two very different promises, and only one of them got made on that call. The next Cooper and Countryman are being engineered right now inside a Group that just told the market it’s watching every euro. We’ll believe the proportions argument when we see the cars. Until then, the honest read is that Mini’s survival looks secure. Now let’s see how it’s identify plays out.

This isn’t coming out of nowhere. It’s the logical, if faster than expected, extension of a platform story we’ve been tracking since BMW’s Gen6 architecture first surfaced as a quantum leap for MINI in February 2025.

Why BMW’s Gen6 Platform Is Forcing A Change

The mechanical reason is straightforward and one we’ve explained in detail before. BMW’s Gen6 electrically excited synchronous motor is packaged longitudinally at the rear axle with an integrated gearbox. There is no front-mounted equivalent in development. As we wrote when MINI’s big shift toward rear wheel drive first became clear, the Gen6 unit simply doesn’t bolt in sideways the way a transverse front-drive motor does. BMW Group engineers told Autocar at the Gen6 launch that there are no plans to build a front drive unit at all.

That constraint already settled the Countryman question. The next generation NB5 Countryman EV is confirmed for Neue Klasse and rear wheel drive dynamics, arriving around 2032 alongside an extended run of the petrol U25. What Autocar’s reporting adds is that the same architectural logic is now being applied to the Cooper, MINI’s flagship and the model with the most brand equity riding on getting it right.

The Front Wheel Drive Petrol Cooper Isn’t Going Anywhere

Whatever happens with the electric Cooper’s platform, front wheel drive petrol power isn’t leaving the MINI Cooper lineup. What’s genuinely unclear is what happens to the car underneath it once the F66 generation runs its course.

MotoringFile’s own reporting has the F66, alongside the F65 five-door and F67 convertible, confirmed in production through roughly 2032, with a 2027 mechanical update for EU7 compliance and an LCI now targeted for late 2027 or early 2028 shaped by customer feedback on the current car’s polarising interior. A second, lighter styling refresh follows around 2030. That’s a known, mapped-out lifecycle, and it’s a long one by MINI standards.

What isn’t known is whether MINI stretches the F66 generation further into the 2030s with additional revisions, or whether it retires the badge on schedule and replaces it outright. Hampf has already confirmed a next generation Cooper is officially in development for the early 2030s, with the platform still undecided at the time. Given Gen6 is an EV-specific architecture with no front-drive equivalent planned, whatever eventually replaces the F66 as the petrol Cooper cannot be Gen6-based by definition. Our reasonable assumption is that this points toward an evolved UKL derivative, similar to how the current FAAR platform grew out of UKL2, and that a change of that scale would come with a new internal code rather than another F66 refresh. BMW doesn’t typically carry a generation code across a full platform swap.

So the honest picture, and this is analysis rather than confirmed reporting, is two Coopers heading in genuinely different directions by the early-to-mid 2030s: an electric Cooper on a rear-drive Gen6 derivative wearing R50-inspired styling, and a petrol Cooper that eventually needs its own new designation once the F66 generation is spent, likely still front driven, still UKL-descended, and still filling the role the F66 fills today.

What This Means for the R50 Connection

The timing of this reporting lands close to a milestone we spent much of the spring covering. The R50 turned 25 this year, and Hampf’s comments to Autocar lean directly on that anniversary. He told the outlet that most people today don’t actually remember the original 1959 Mini, but they do remember one of BMW’s Minis from the past 25 years, the R50 chief among them. His intent, as he put it, is that he will “make sure to connect to this past.” For a design chief who has otherwise been guarded about specifics, that’s a fairly direct signal about where the next Cooper’s silhouette is headed.

There’s a mechanical irony worth sitting with here. The R50 was never rear wheel drive, but it also wasn’t built on a platform BMW controlled outright. It used the Tritec engine, a Chrysler-engineered iron block assembled in Brazil, sourced through non-BMW-standard suppliers because Rover’s involvement and the compressed development timeline left no better option. If the next Cooper does move to Gen6, it will be the most thoroughly BMW-engineered Cooper in the nameplate’s history, right down to the drive layout, while wearing R50-inspired styling. The brand is reaching backward for its silhouette at the exact moment it’s reaching forward for its engineering.

The Shrinking Question, Again

Hampf also used the interview to reopen a debate MotoringFile has tracked closely: whether MINI should build something smaller than the current Cooper. Asked specifically about 2011’s Rocketman concept, a three-door barely 3.4 metres long, he didn’t rule it out. He described the question of MINI growing smaller versus bigger as a conversation happening inside the company on a near-daily basis, while pointing to the Countryman as the release valve that already covers the brand’s larger-car use cases. That’s consistent with what he told Auto Express earlier this year, which we covered in our piece on Hampf and the future of the Rocketman, where a city-car-scale MINI was confirmed as still under active study rather than shelved.

He was careful to frame any shrinkage as constrained by reality rather than nostalgia. A modern Cooper still has to carry the crash structures, sensor packaging and driver-assistance hardware that regulators require today, none of which existed when the R50 or the Rocketman concept were conceived. Hampf’s own explanation for why the Cooper has grown with each generation puts the blame on those regulatory and ADAS requirements rather than on any drift in design ambition, a framing we found largely credible when he made a similar case in our feature on the Cooper’s design direction back in June. So the honest read is that a smaller Cooper remains a live internal debate, not a confirmed product, and any version of it would still be shaped by constraints the R50 never had to answer to.

In one configuration, the blue covers the body while the silver takes the roof and mirror caps. In the other, silver wraps the body and blue defines the roof and mirrors. Bonnet and boot stripes tie the two together, and MINI counts four distinct looks once you factor in both body styles. It’s the same design idea wearing its jacket inside out, and it’s a genuinely clever way to wring a fresh personality out of a signature MINI has owned for 25 years.

Worth stating plainly, since MINI’s own materials don’t dwell on it: there is nothing mechanical happening here. No retune, no power bump, no chassis or brake upgrade specific to the edition. The Rooftop Edition is a paint and graphics package layered onto the existing Cooper S 2 Door and 4 Door, and it should be judged as exactly that, a design exercise, not a performance one. Inside, MINI kept things sensible: John Cooper Works sport seats, a dark cabin, and otherwise standard Cooper S furnishings, which is the right call. Let the roof do the talking.

The Fifth of Eight

MINI USA framed its 2026 special-edition strategy around sneaker-drop logic back in June, treating each limited model like a scheduled release rather than a routine trim addition. We covered the thinking behind that campaign here, and laid out what was coming over the following twelve months. The Rooftop Edition is drop five of eight, following the 1965 Victory Edition that leaned on Monte Carlo Rally history, the Cooper S Red Line Edition and its Legend Grey over Chili Red treatment, the Paul Smith Editions that brought a genuine design-world collaboration to three body styles, and the Cooper Heritage Edition, which leaned hardest into Union Jack nostalgia and, as we noted at the time, ran into a roof-graphic problem specific to the North American market.

Set against that run, the Rooftop Edition stands out as the most confident use yet of a design cue MINI already owns outright. Where Heritage Edition asked a flag graphic to carry a lot of narrative weight, and Paul Smith leaned on an outside collaborator’s cachet, Rooftop Edition trusts the roof itself to be the whole story, and that’s a question MINI has been quietly refining since the modern car launched in 2001. The contrast roof has never been static. MINI has iterated on it for two decades, from early silver-roof debates to the Multitone roof introduced in 2021 and expanded the following year. Rooftop Edition is a simpler move than either of those, but simplicity is the point: the color-swap idea is clean enough that it doesn’t need embellishment to land.

The question worth asking, on its 67th birthday, isn’t just what made the Mini an icon. It’s why that particular convergence of people, class, and moment has never happened again.

The Queen, the Beatles, and the Bloke Down the Street

As early as 1960, Lord Snowdon had arranged for Queen Elizabeth to be chauffeured by Issigonis himself through the grounds of Windsor Castle. For a car that cost less than £500, this was a remarkable social statement. It wasn’t a stunt. There were no press photographers invited. It was simply that the Mini, by virtue of being genuinely good and genuinely small and genuinely charming, had found its way into royal favour on its own merits.

Around the same time, the other end of the cultural spectrum was arriving at the same conclusion. John Lennon ordered a Mini in 1964, even though he didn’t have a driving licence. Ringo Starr was photographed with one of the Cooper S models that had competed in the Monte Carlo Rally that year. Paul McCartney was seen getting into his own Mini in 1967. George Harrison went a step further, commissioning a bespoke Mini de Ville from the renowned coachbuilder Radford.

That’s all four Beatles. The most famous band in the world, each finding his own relationship with the same car that was sitting in the driveways of nurses, teachers, and factory workers across Britain. The Mini was, critically, a car that virtually everyone could afford, a class-defying vehicle that served as a unifier between people from many distinctive backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. That last point is the one that gets underplayed. The Mini didn’t just appeal across class lines. It dissolved them, at least for the length of a drive.

The Swinging Sixties Needed a Car, and It Found One

The Swinging Sixties was a youth-driven cultural revolution centred on London, one that saw a flourishing in art, music, and fashion, symbolised by pop and fashion exports: the Beatles, the mod and psychedelic subcultures, Mary Quant’s designs, and models like Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton. It was a moment of enormous social velocity. Britain was shedding its post-war austerity and inventing a new version of itself, younger and louder and less deferential than anything that had come before.

The Mini fit that moment as if Issigonis had drawn it with the 1960s specifically in mind, which of course he hadn’t. The design was born of the Suez Crisis and fuel rationing. But what came out of that engineering brief was a car that happened to be irreverent in exactly the way that decade demanded. Small when big was the convention. Front-wheel drive when rear-wheel drive was the norm. Space-efficient to a degree that seemed almost like a joke, until you sat inside it and realised it wasn’t.

Mary Quant, the designer who defined the visual language of Swinging London perhaps more than anyone else, named her iconic miniskirt after her beloved Mini Cooper, describing the garment as synonymous with freedom and the rejection of societal convention. That connection is worth sitting with. The most significant fashion garment of the 1960s took its name from the most significant car of the 1960s. The two objects shared the same cultural DNA: small, provocative, democratic, and quintessentially British.

Peter Sellers, Steve McQueen, and a Radford’s Worth of Famous Owners

Beyond the Beatles, the Mini secured a firm place in the fashion, art, and music scene of Swinging London. The Monkees’ Michael Nesmith had his own Radford-built Cooper S, complete with a folding roof, a 100-hp engine, and a wooden dashboard. David Bowie was particularly taken with its parking capabilities, firmly believing there was no other car designed so perfectly for city life.

Peter Sellers, who could afford anything and famously did buy most of it, kept several Minis. Steve McQueen, the man who bought his from John Cooper directly, drove his until the 1970s. King Hussein of Jordan, Princess Grace of Monaco, and Prince Charles were all proud owners. Enzo Ferrari, founder of the company that makes a point of being nothing like a Mini, owned one too.

This is the list that has never been replicated. Not by any car since. You can find celebrities who drive expensive things. You can find expensive things that get used occasionally as royal transport. But the specific combination of the working nurse, the queen, the rock star, the film star, the racing driver, and the fashion designer all genuinely using the same car, not for appearances but because it was simply the right car to have, that has not happened again.

The Monte Carlo Factor

It would be incomplete to talk about the Mini’s cultural moment without acknowledging the role that motorsport played in legitimising it. The 1964 Monte Carlo Rally win, followed by victories in 1965 and 1967, transformed the Mini’s reputation from clever people’s car to giant killer. A tiny British saloon had outpaced vastly more powerful rivals on one of the toughest events in the world. That matters for the cultural story, because it gave the Mini a dimension that pure affordability never could: genuine, proven, underdog credibility. It wasn’t just cheap and charming. It was fast. It could embarrass cars that cost ten times as much, on ice, in the Alps, driven by some of the best rally drivers in the world.

That story resonated in a Britain that was still, in part, measuring itself against the post-war world and finding reasons to feel good about itself. The Mini gave it one.

Why Nothing Has Come Close

The honest answer is that the conditions that produced the Mini’s cultural moment were unrepeatable by definition. You need a car that is genuinely, affordably accessible to everyone. You need it to be genuinely good, not merely cheap. You need it to arrive in a cultural moment hungry enough to adopt it as a symbol. And you need that moment to be one in which class barriers are visibly dissolving rather than reasserting themselves.

The modern MINI, which we’ve followed through every generation from the R50 onward, is a fine car that has done an impressive job of carrying the original’s spirit into premium small-car territory. But it is a premium car. The person who buys a new Cooper and the person who takes the bus are not driving the same vehicle. The 1960s Mini made that gap disappear, briefly, magically, and in a way that no marketing department has been able to engineer before or since.

At 67, the Mini deserves celebrating not just for surviving, but for that specific decade when it was something no car has managed to be: the right object at the right moment, for everybody.

The reason the iX3 drives the way it does comes down to how the car processes inputs, not just how much power it has on tap. The all new system architecture (what BMW call’s the “Heart of Joy”) consolidates drivetrain, steering, brakes and energy recuperation onto a single controller running roughly ten times faster than BMW’s previous architecture. In a conventional car, those functions live on a dozen or more separate controllers, each interpreting a driver’s input and making its own decision before passing information along to the next system. That works, but it’s sequential, and every handoff adds a fraction of a second of lag. The Heart of Joy collapses that into one continuous calculation, so when a driver turns the wheel, lifts off the throttle or touches the brake, the car isn’t juggling separate systems reacting to each other. It’s making one coordinated decision about what the car should do next.

We got an early look at how hard this system is built to be pushed on our sister site BimmerFile, where we rode along in the BMW Vision Driving Experience, a test mule producing over 13,000 lb-ft of torque built specifically to abuse the Heart of Joy at a scale no customer will ever encounter. What stood out wasn’t the torque figure, it was how little drama the car made of managing it. That’s the same architecture now filtering down into a production SUV, and eventually into the Countryman.

That’s why the reviews keep circling back to responsiveness rather than range. BMW claims the system handles roughly 98 percent of everyday stops through regeneration alone, but the more telling detail is that testers can’t feel the handoff between regeneration and friction braking, which is normally the giveaway that separates a good EV brake pedal from an average one. The same logic applies to cornering. Reviewers who came in expecting the usual heavy, numb EV SUV instead describe a chassis that changes direction with unusual immediacy, because steering, motor torque and braking are being calculated together rather than negotiated between systems that don’t fully know what the others are doing. A few have flagged ride quality inconsistencies on rougher pavement with larger wheel and tyre options, so the tuning clearly still varies by spec, but nobody is describing the underlying responsiveness as a gimmick.

This is the part MINI is inheriting for the NB5, and it matters more than the battery. The current Countryman SE is a competent electric MINI, but it’s built on FAAR, a platform designed to accommodate combustion drivetrains as much as electric ones, and its driving dynamics reflect that compromise. The NB5 moves to a rear-wheel-drive-biased chassis built from the ground up around Neue Klasse’s electric architecture, with the Heart of Joy managing how that chassis actually behaves in real time. For a brand whose entire identity rests on go-kart handling, a system that’s already demonstrating sharper cornering response and a more coherent brake pedal in a vehicle twice the Countryman’s likely footprint is a genuinely bigger deal than any range number.

The range and charging gains are real too, and worth noting briefly: the iX3’s EPA rating of up to 434 miles and 400kW charging dwarf the current Countryman SE’s 212 miles and 130kW, and the i3 sedan is tracking similar territory. But those numbers are the easy part of the Neue Klasse story to sell, and they’ll keep improving regardless of which model they land on. What’s harder to engineer, and what’s actually showing up in how these cars drive, is a control system that makes a heavy EV feel immediate and predictable rather than just quick in a straight line. MINI has a full cycle of BMW refining that system across the iX3 and i3 before the NB5 arrives in 2032. If the early reviews are anything to go by, that’s the revolution worth paying attention to.

What Actually Happened

The Jordan and Pakistan launches aren’t news in the sense of a new product. They’re news in the sense of strategy. MINI head Jean-Philippe Parain framed both entries around “iconic design, digital innovation and hallmark go-kart feeling,” the standard corporate line, but the underlying signal is more interesting than the quote: MINI is treating its fully electric lineup as a global default, deploying it into growth markets in the Middle East and South Asia well ahead of, or entirely instead of, the market that arguably cares most about the nameplate’s history.

That’s the part worth sitting with. Karachi and Amman are getting the Cooper Electric before Chicago does, not because BMW Group likes those markets more, but because the landed cost math works there and it doesn’t here.

The J01 Problem Was Never a Secret

MotoringFile confirmed the J01 electric Cooper for US sales back in May 2024. By that November, the plan had quietly inverted: MINI USA would not be importing the J01 or the China-built Aceman in the near future. The reversal tracked almost exactly with the tariff pressure that reshaped BMW Group’s production planning that same year, and it hasn’t loosened since. MINI USA has spent 2025 and 2026 adjusting pricing ahead of tariffs rather than adding models, and the 2026 US lineup that emerged from that process is gas only at the Cooper level: Hardtop, Convertible, JCW, in two- and four-door form. No electric Cooper. No Aceman, ever, at any point in this generation’s life.

Here’s where it gets genuinely interesting rather than just frustrating. In February, the Supreme Court struck down the IEEPA tariffs that Trump had leaned on for his sweeping global tariff regime, a 6-3 ruling that erased more than half of existing US tariffs overnight. If you assumed that ruling would crack the door back open for the J01 and J05, it didn’t, and understanding why says more about MINI’s actual math than any press release will.

The IEEPA tariffs were never the ones blocking these cars. The Cooper Electric is built in Leipzig, subject to the Section 232 automotive tariff. The Aceman is built in China through the Spotlight Automotive joint venture, and Chinese-built EVs still carry Section 301 tariffs that predate this entire Trump-era tariff fight by six years and have survived three separate administrations’ worth of trade policy. Neither mechanism is tied to the emergency powers the Court just gutted, and neither moved an inch in February. That’s the throughline across ten years of US trade policy: whichever administration is in office, whichever legal authority they’re using, small-volume electric MINIs built in Germany or China keep landing on the wrong side of the math.

The Countryman Complicates the Easy Answer

What keeps this from being a clean tariff story is the Countryman. It’s also built in Leipzig, it’s also electric, and it’s not going anywhere. MotoringFile debunked the rumor that the Countryman SE was leaving the US last year, and BMW confirmed the SE ALL4 as part of the 2027 model year lineup. Same tariff exposure as the J01, same plant, opposite outcome.

So it’s not purely a tariffs story, even if tariffs make a convenient headline. It’s a profitability story with tariffs as the dominant variable. The Countryman is bigger, priced higher, and sold at volumes that absorb a 25 to 30 percent hit in a way a compact electric hardtop competing against its own gas-powered sibling can’t. MINI USA doesn’t need to explain why the JCW Countryman ALL4 pencils out and the Cooper SE doesn’t. The order book already tells you.

What This Means Going Forward

Every market MINI adds to the electric-first column, Pakistan and Jordan now among them, isn’t a market BMW Group finds more appealing than the US. It’s a market where the tariff math clears. America increasingly looks like the exception, running a gas-powered Cooper lineup that’s closer in spirit to the pre-2024 cars than to what MINI is selling almost everywhere else. That’s not necessarily a loss for American buyers, the Oxford-built Cooper Hardtop is still a genuinely good small car, but it does mean the US relationship with MINI’s electric ambitions has been priced out, not phased out.

Unless Section 232 or Section 301 exposure changes meaningfully, or MINI decides a US-built or USMCA-sourced electric Cooper is worth the investment, don’t expect that to change.

MINI Global has spent much of 2026 developing a considerably more serious off-road Countryman: lifted suspension, chunkier off-road-oriented tyres, roof-tent-ready hardware, set to debut at the Rebelle Rally this October. It’s also called the Rugged Edition. Why MINI South Africa attached that name to a cosmetic accessory package a full year before MINI Global uses it on an actual off-roader is a question the brand hasn’t answered. But let’s put that aside and take a look at what may or may not be a preview of the global Countryman Rugged Edition.

What You’re Actually Buying

The South African special edition bundles a handful of items, most of them cosmetic:

• Decorative bonnet stripes and a mountain-motif grille decal, echoing the Countryman’s existing C-pillar badge graphic
• 18-inch Y-spoke wheels finished in Frozen Midnight Grey
• General Grabber AT3 all-terrain tyres, in place of the standard road-biased rubber

• A choice of two complimentary roof accessories: a roof box or a bicycle carrier

It’s offered across Countryman C (three-cylinder, 115 kW) and Countryman S (four-cylinder ALL4, 150 kW), in Classic and Favoured trims, priced from R833,903 to R989,938. Buyers choose from four exterior colours: Nanuq White, Smokey Green, Melting Silver, and Legend Grey. Ride height, suspension, and drivetrain are all untouched, identical to the standard Countryman.

How to Buy one Without Being in South Africa

Here’s the part MINI’s marketing glosses over: the wheel-and-tyre combination isn’t exclusive to the Rugged Edition badge. The Frozen Midnight Grey Y-spokes and General Grabber AT3s have been listed as a standalone accessory option for over a year globally. Any Countryman C or S buyer can spec that same look and that same off-road-rated rubber at their local dealer today, without waiting for a limited-run special edition or paying a premium for one.

The Same Package Is Headed to the Global Edition

That wheel-and-tyre setup isn’t staying regional, either. The same Frozen Midnight Grey wheels and General Grabber AT3 tyres are confirmed to feature on the international Rugged Edition launching this fall. In other words, the one piece of hardware MINI South Africa branded as special is about to become the standard look for the global car too.

Which raises the real question: if the wheels and tyres are already accounted for, what does MINI Global actually add? Spy shots and prototype sightings through mid-2026 point to a lifted suspension, an extended rear spoiler, and roof-mounted overlanding gear, none of which appear on the South African car. Whether those changes make it into the production version, or whether the global Rugged Edition turns out to be the same accessory package with a bigger marketing budget, is still unconfirmed.

The MINI Cooper Convertible Stardust Edition launched in Gurgaon this week as a CBU (completely built-up) import, priced at INR 62,90,000, roughly $9,500 over the standard Cooper S-spec Convertible in India. It’s sold exclusively through MINI’s India website, deliveries are already underway, and BMW Group India hasn’t said how many units it’s bringing in, only that supply is limited.

What’s actually different

Worth being clear-eyed about this one: there is nothing new engineered for the Stardust Edition. No unique paint, no unique wheel, no unique piece of hardware. What MINI has done is take existing colors, wheels, and roof options that haven’t previously been offered together on a Cooper S Convertible and package them as a standalone, badged trim, which is exactly how most “second-tier” MINI special editions work. The value isn’t in novelty, it’s in the curation.

The headline color is Sparkling Copper Grey metallic, which MINI’s India copy describes as capturing “the shifting, indefinable colours of the sky at twilight.” It’s an uncommon shade to see on a MINI specifically (it otherwise mostly shows up as an Individual-order color and on the outgoing BMW X7), but it’s an existing color in the BMW Group palette, not something developed for this car. Against it, MINI runs Vibrant Silver mirror caps and a set of 18-inch JCW Rallye Spoke alloys, also in Vibrant Silver, wheels with a red-accented, rally-inspired face that have typically been paired with genuine John Cooper Works cars rather than a Cooper S trim level. Putting that wheel on a non-JCW car, more than the paint, is the part of this package actually worth noting.

The roof is the other signature piece: a MINI Yours Soft Top finished in black with the brand’s woven Union Jack graphic, opening in 18 seconds (at up to 30 km/h) and closing in 15. Inside, it’s business as usual for the F67 generation: the circular OLED Interaction Unit, MINI Operating System 9, head-up display, Harman Kardon sound, and black Vescin sport seats with the driver-side Active Seat.

Mechanically, the Stardust Edition uses the same 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four making 204 hp and 300 Nm through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, good for a 6.9-second 0-100 km/h run and a 240 km/h top speed, the same output as the standard Cooper S Convertible sold in India.

Could the US see this later this year?

MINI has trained enthusiasts to expect this question every time a market-specific edition drops, and the honest answer here is: probably not as a badged “Stardust Edition,” but almost every ingredient in the bundle is already sitting in the US configurator.

The pattern is worth knowing. When MINI USA does roll out special editions across the range (Resolute, Untamed, and Untold all launched together for model year 2023), they tend to be genuinely global efforts, announced for the US, Europe, and other markets in the same window. Stardust doesn’t fit that mold. It arrives alongside a run of other 2026 India-only cars: the Cooper S Victory Edition (a 25-unit nod to the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally win) and the Cooper S GP Inspired Edition (30 units, Legend Grey), both built specifically to give MINI India’s dealer network something exclusive to sell, not to seed a future US launch. BMW Group India has been notably more aggressive with these region-locked runs in 2026 than MINI USA has.

And that’s really the point of a package like this: none of the pieces need to be invented, because MINI already sells them individually. Sparkling Copper Grey is orderable on US-market MINIs today, the Union Jack soft top is a $600 stand-alone option on the JCW Convertible, and the JCW Rallye Spoke 18s have already shown up stateside on MINI’s one-off JCW Convertible build for a US customer earlier this year. An American buyer can already spec nearly every visual element of the Stardust car à la carte on a Cooper S or JCW Convertible; what they can’t get is MINI doing the curation for them and putting a Stardust badge on the result.

So the realistic scenario isn’t a US-market “Stardust Edition” showing up on dealer lots by December. It’s more likely that MINI USA either lets this remain an India exclusive, the way Victory and GP Inspired have, or repackages the same color-and-wheel combination under its own name later. MINI has done that shuffle before, taking a well-received India or UK trim and reissuing the bundle for North America a model year or two on. If you’re in the US and want this exact look now, building it yourself option-by-option will get you there faster than waiting on MINI USA’s marketing calendar.

The problem: to open the new design you have to slide your fingers under the flush panel and flip the handle up to release it. Unlike the previous dead-simple design, which let you unlatch the door and pull it open in one motion, the new design makes doing that same thing far harder. More often than not you end up bracing your free hand against the door frame just to get the leverage to actually open it, a two-hand job where previous MINIs needed one. It is a small thing that happens many times a day, which is exactly why it is worth getting right, and MINI is not getting it right.

Of course, this isn’t the case for the entire lineup. The F66 Cooper, F65 five-door, and F67 convertible, all built on MINI’s older, UKL-based platform, still ship with the sensible, grab-and-pull design.

Why the change? The flush handles on the U25, J01, and J05 shave a fraction of a percent off the drag coefficient, and in the world of EVs and increasingly stringent CO2 standards, MINI and BMW say they need all the help they can get.

When Top Gear sat down with Holger Hampf, MINI’s design chief since taking over the role in 2024, and asked him about flush handles directly, he didn’t hedge. “My Mini answer would be proper door handles, for sure,” he said. “I hate kitchens without door handles. It’s also very fitting to Mini, because a function needs to be obvious. A door handle can be a piece you really love to touch.” While that was more pointed to the adoption of touch sensitive door handles seen on some EVs outside of the BMW Group, the same could be said about the current flush design.

The aero case is thin

Flush handles exist because they reduce drag, and drag matters more on an EV than a petrol car because every fraction of a percent shows up on the range sticker. That is a real, defensible reason for the J01 Cooper EV and the J05 Aceman EV to consider the tradeoff. Independent testing across the industry has generally put the benefit of flush over conventional handles at somewhere between 0.005 and 0.01 in Cd, worth roughly one to two percent of total drag and a handful of miles of range on a full charge. That is not nothing on a spreadsheet. It is also not the kind of number that should override how a driver interacts with the car twenty times a day.

And it does not explain the Countryman at all. The U25 is a tall, boxy family SUV. Nobody is choosing between a Countryman and a competitor over a percent of drag coefficient, and MINI is not marketing it on efficiency the way it does the electric cars. Fitting flush handles here reads like a styling decision inherited from BMWs and applied for cost savings above all else.

Ownership is where this falls apart

MINI’s flush handles are mechanical, not the powered, motor-driven type that has landed Tesla in front of NHTSA rulemaking after complaints about handles failing in a crash or after a battery loses power. That distinction matters and MINI deserves credit for it. But mechanical does not mean effortless. There is no separate release and pull, it is the same handle doing both jobs: you flip it up with your fingers to break it out of the flush panel, and that same motion is then supposed to become the pull that swings the door open. Doing both at once with one hand is awkward enough that plenty of owners end up bracing their free hand against the door frame just to get the leverage a conventional handle would give them for free. Owners across MINI’s forums, on cars going back generations, already complain about handles that are stiff or need real effort to operate. Ask a flush handle to serve as both the release and the pull point and that problem gets worse, not better.

Even MINI’s own philosophy argues against this

The frustrating part is that flush handles fail MINI’s own design test. Hampf’s line about a function needing to be obvious is not a throwaway comment, it is a description of what has made MINI’s interiors and details feel considered rather than assembled. A round central display that still hasn’t been copied by a competitor works because it is confident and legible. A door handle that needs a learning curve for houseguests and valets is the opposite of that. It is a function pretending to be a design statement.

To be fair to the current cars, the timing is awkward rather than damning. The U25, J01, and J05 were all locked in before Hampf’s appointment reshaped MINI’s design direction, and MINI has already confirmed an LCI refresh across the Cooper, Countryman, and Aceman that the brand itself has tied to customer feedback on the current generation. Door handles are exactly the kind of complaint that shows up in that feedback loop. Whether MINI is willing to spend tooling money mid-cycle to fix something this small is a fair question, and it is one worth asking loudly before the fifth generation locks in its own answer.

MINI does not need to invent anything to fix this. The F66, F65, and F67 are proof, sitting on dealer lots right now, that a conventional handle still belongs on a modern MINI. Carry that same handle over to the U25, J01, and J05 at the LCI and the brand loses nothing in showroom coherence. It just stops asking half its own lineup to live with a compromise the other half never had to make.

MINI spent decades building a reputation on details you could feel with your hands: toggle switches, a shift lever with actual heft, controls that told you what they did before you had to think about it. Flush handles trade a sliver of that for a sliver of drag coefficient. That’s a pretty bad trade in our eyes.

It is worth asking, 25 years into the BMW MINI era, what the phrase actually means, where it came from, and whether the brand is still entitled to use it.

Where the line actually came from

“Go-kart feeling” is a tidy translation of what Alec Issigonis built into the original Mini almost by accident. The packaging brief was about interior space, not handling, but the consequences were a car with the wheels pushed to the corners, almost no overhang, an extremely short wheelbase relative to mass, and a low polar moment of inertia. Add quick steering and tires that were tiny by modern standards, and you got a car that pivoted around the driver’s hips rather than sweeping around them. The Cooper and Cooper S editions, with John Cooper’s involvement, weaponized that geometry into a car that won three Monte Carlo Rallies in the 1960s. The phrase didn’t exist yet, but the engineering reality it would later describe absolutely did.

When BMW resurrected the brand for 2001, the marketing team needed a single line that explained why a car with a 1960s silhouette was relevant in a Mégane and Golf world. “Go-kart feeling” did the job in three words. It was specific enough to mean something, vague enough to survive translation into any market, and (critically) it was true. The R50 was, by the standards of its era, genuinely darty.

What it actually requires

A go-kart feel is not a vibe, despite what the marketing department occasionally implies. It is a stack of specific things, and you can audit a car against them.

It needs steering that talks. Not just quick, but rich in feedback. Modern electric racks fight against this constantly, and MINI has, to its credit, tuned around that better than most. Our breakdown of how Go-Kart Mode actually reshapes throttle, shifts, steering, and sound goes into the specifics, but the headline is that the steering tune carries most of the perceptual load.

It needs a chassis that pivots near the driver. Short overhangs, low polar moment, suspension geometry that loads up cleanly. The original got this for free. Every modern MINI has had to engineer it back in, against a curb weight that keeps creeping upward.

It needs gearing and throttle response that let you hold a corner without thinking about it. This is where the electric era complicates things. A single-speed EV powertrain changes the conversation entirely. Not necessarily worse, but different.

And it needs the car to feel small from the driver’s seat, regardless of what the tape measure says. This last one is the most fragile, and the easiest to lose.

The audit: how the 2026 lineup holds up

The Cooper 3-door, particularly in JCW form, is still the closest thing in the lineup to what the phrase historically described. It has the geometry, the steering, the bandwidth, and a curb weight still in defensible range. If “go-kart feeling” had to retreat to a single car, this is where it would go.

The 4-door Cooper softens the line slightly. The wheelbase extension is small, but it changes the way the car rotates. Still a sharp small car. Not a kart in the way the 3-door is.

The Countryman is the model that has stretched the phrase more than any model plausibility. However whether it’s on Montana dirt roads or tarmac, we’ve found it to be a properly sorted crossover that genuinely delivers in ways others in its class cannot. In EV form it gets closer thanks to the instant torque but even then, we’re not so sure the phrase still fits.

The Aceman JCW, which we have argued is the sweet spot for many pote JCW potential buyers, brings things partially back. Smaller than the Countryman, tighter than the previous 5-door hatch, with a low-mounted battery that gives it a usefully low center of gravity, it gets closer to the spirit of the line than its weight would suggest. It is the most credible crossover expression of the phrase the brand has released since the original R60 Countryman.

The electric Cooper SE is the genuinely interesting case. Steering: good. Geometry: right. Mass: real, and you feel it on direction changes. Whether it counts depends on how strictly you read the line. But to us it’s a point and shoot car that lives up to the phrase.

Why the phrase has lasted

Marketing phrases usually rust. They get retired with platform changes, replaced when the brand chief changes, or quietly euthanized once the press starts using them ironically. This one hasn’t, for two reasons.

First, MINI has kept building cars that, even imperfectly, deliver some version of the thing. The brand has been disciplined about steering tuning across every platform since 2001. That is rarer than it should be.

Second, no rival has produced a better three-word summary of what makes a small, eager, front-driven car feel the way it should. “Driver’s car” is too generic. “Hot hatch” is too segment-bound. “Go-kart feeling” is specific to a sensation buyers in the segment actually want, and the underlying truth claim is testable on a back road in about four corners.

Where it goes from here

The next decade is going to be harder. Curb weights are likely not going down. Battery packs are getting larger before they get smaller. Tire and wheel sizes keep creeping up for reasons that have nothing to do with handling. The pressures pushing against “go-kart feeling” are real and structural.

What MINI has going for it is institutional muscle memory. The engineers in Munich and Oxford know what a MINI should feel like, and they keep clawing the cars back toward that feel against everything trying to dilute it. The phrase will survive as long as the engineering does.

We scooped this project over two years ago, and design chief Holger Hampf has since confirmed the direction on record: a genuinely off-road focused version of the U25, not a styling exercise. That matches what our sources described in MINI’s history of off-roaders finally hitting showrooms, where we detailed a planned package built around a modest lift, dedicated wheels and General Grabber AT3 tyres. A world premiere is locked for October 2026.

The prototype spotted in Colorado wears a visible suspension lift, chunkier off-road rubber, a roof tent or cargo box and an extended rear spoiler, and it appears to be based on the petrol Countryman S All4 rather than the electric SE. MINI has already sold a Countryman Rugged Edition in South Africa, a limited run of 100 units, but that car is really just a paint and tyre story: Frozen-finish colours fitted with aftermarket-sourced General Grabber AT3 tyres. No lift, no underbody work, no mechanical changes of any kind. The global Rugged Edition shares the name but is a different animal entirely. Worth noting too that Edition here is being used the way it commonly is in Europe, as shorthand for a version or variant of a car, not a signal that this is a limited run. MINI’s own framing, calling it the toughest Countryman it has built, is the tell that this one actually earns the name.

None of this comes from nowhere. MINI has won Dakar six times with X-Raid, and the 2020 X-Raid Countryman Edition previewed exactly this thinking with a 40mm lift, lightweight 17-inch wheels and underbody protection. The question now is how much of that pedigree survives the trip from rally car to showroom floor.

The BMW Template Sitting Right There

BMW already ran a version of this playbook with the 2025 X5 Silver Anniversary Edition, and it’s a useful blueprint for what MINI could plausibly do, and where the line probably gets drawn. The X5 Silver Anniversary Edition paired standard two-axle air suspension, which raises ride height from 8.3 to as much as 9.9 inches, with a genuine mechanical rear locking differential, underbody skid plates and a set of xSand, xRocks, xGravel and xSnow drive modes. An xOffroad camera usable up to 22mph and a dedicated xOffroad View showing incline, roll angle and ground clearance rounded it out. All-terrain tyres were offered too, though tellingly only as a dealer-installed option rather than something BMW would warranty from the factory.

That last detail matters. A locking differential on the Countryman is very unlikely. MINI doesn’t build a rear-biased AWD architecture that would make one worthwhile, and packaging one into the U25’s platform would be a significant engineering lift for what is still a lower-volume model. But plenty of the X5’s other tricks translate.

What MINI Could Actually Add

Air suspension would be the biggest and most surprising addition, and MINI has never offered it on any current model. Even a modest system, adjustable across two or three ride heights rather than the X5’s full range, would do more for real off-road capability than anything else on this list. It solves the approach and departure angle problem that a fixed lift can’t fully address, and it would let MINI market a genuine raise it for the trail, lower it for the motorway story, which is exactly the kind of functional novelty that gets a new variant talked about. We’ve already covered how MINI reworked its Cooper suspension hardware for ride quality, and the architecture question there, mechanical versus electronically adaptive, becomes even more relevant if MINI is serious about variable ride height on the Countryman.

A proper all-terrain tyre, standard rather than optional, is the second piece. Reporting on the car points to a similar 225/55 R18 fitment to what’s already been floated for the U25 off-road package. The smart move is making it standard equipment rather than following BMW’s dealer-installed workaround. It’s the single highest-value, lowest-engineering-risk change MINI can make, and it’s also the one most likely to survive from prototype to production car unchanged.

Underbody reinforcement and skid plating matter more here than on the X5, given how much closer to the ground the Countryman sits. The X-Raid car already proved this out with genuine underbody protection rather than styling cladding. For a Countryman that’s actually going to see gravel roads and rutted trails rather than just gravel car parks, aluminium or high-density polymer plating ahead of the sump and transfer case is close to mandatory if MINI wants the car’s off-road claims to hold up to scrutiny.

A basic terrain-mode system rounds it out. MINI doesn’t need four distinct modes like BMW’s xOffroad suite, but even two, something like a Gravel and a Snow setting that retunes throttle mapping, stability control thresholds and, on the All4 cars, front-rear torque bias, would give the Rugged Edition a tech story that isn’t just cosmetic. This is the cheapest item on the list relative to what it buys MINI in marketing terms.

Approach and departure angle work through bumper design is the one area MINI has more room to play with than BMW did. The Countryman’s smaller footprint means a redesigned front and rear fascia with steeper cutlines could meaningfully improve real-world clearance without touching the suspension at all.

The Honest Read

MINI is not about to build a Land Rover competitor, and nobody serious expects it to. But the gap between a paint and tyre exercise, which is all the South African car ever was, and a genuinely more capable Countryman is smaller than people assume. Air suspension specifically would be the one addition that actually changes what the car can do rather than just how it looks doing it. Whether MINI spends the money on that versus a simpler passive lift and better rubber says a lot about how seriously the brand is taking this segment going forward. October will tell us which car we actually got.

We covered the raw sales figures a few weeks ago when BMW released regional numbers ahead of the full financial report. Now that the complete H1 picture is out, including the cost cutting and restructuring plans that come with it, there is a fuller and more useful story to tell about what this means for MINI specifically.

The numbers, restated

MINI delivered 149,535 vehicles in the first half of 2026, up from 133,838 a year earlier, a gain of 11.7 percent. Q2 alone brought 81,032 units, up 17.1 percent year on year. Fully electric models made up 36.9 percent of that volume, up from 34.3 percent in the same period last year, meaning more than one in three MINIs sold globally in H1 was a battery electric car.

Context matters here. BMW brand deliveries fell 6.2 percent for the half, dragged down hard by a 20.4 percent collapse in China. Rolls-Royce was down 9.8 percent. MINI was the only one of the group’s three car brands to post growth, and it did so while leaning almost entirely on European demand and electrification, the exact combination we flagged as the pattern to watch back in July.

Why the group’s cost reset matters to MINI

The more interesting part of this report, from a MINI perspective, is not the sales line. It is what BMW Group said about its own cost structure and how that plan intersects with MINI’s product roadmap.

BMW confirmed a workforce restructuring agreement with its Works Council, including voluntary severance in indirect functions in Germany, and CFO Walter Mertl said the point is a sustainably lower cost base achieved through reduced complexity, not just headcount reduction. R&D spending across the group fell 7.6 percent for the half, and capital expenditure was down 30.5 percent. CEO Milan Nedeljkovi? described a push toward standardisation and communality in engineering as one of four key internal focus areas going forward.

None of that is aimed at MINI specifically, but it is the exact climate in which platform sharing decisions get made, and it lines up with what we have been hearing from sources close to MINI’s next generation planning. Holger Hampf has confirmed the next generation MINI Cooper is coming in the early 2030s with its platform still an open question, while Neue Klasse has been earmarked for the next Countryman (NB5) rather than for J01’s successor. In a group that is actively tightening capex and pushing engineering standardisation as strategic priorities, that decision reads less like caution and more like discipline. A bespoke, Cooper specific architecture would run directly against everything BMW just told analysts it is trying to do.

It also reframes the U25 Cooper’s ICE extension to 2032 in a slightly different light. Extending combustion production on an existing, amortised platform rather than accelerating a new architecture is precisely the kind of decision that fits a group actively trying to reduce complexity and protect free cash flow, which BMW is targeting above €2.5 billion for the full year in the automotive segment.

The regional picture BMW didn’t have to spell out for MINI

BMW’s report noted that Europe deliveries for the group rose 5.4 percent for the half and accelerated to 7.6 percent in Q2, with BEV sales across the region up 37.9 percent following the iX3 launch. That is the environment MINI’s growth is coming from. The brand’s electrified models are succeeding in exactly the market where BMW Group as a whole is succeeding, and struggling far less in the market, China, where the group as a whole is struggling most.

That is worth sitting with. MINI’s growth is not happening in spite of the group’s broader difficulties, it is happening because MINI’s current product mix and its strongest markets happen to be aligned with where BMW Group’s overall strategy is working. Whether that holds once Neue Klasse reaches the Countryman and MINI’s own platform decisions come into sharper focus is the question worth tracking from here.

MINI’s first Rebelle Rally entry

MINI’s debut car will be driven by Felicia Killman and navigated by Erika Ferrer over roughly 1,500 miles of unmarked desert terrain across Nevada, California, and, new for 2026, Utah. Rebelle Rally bans GPS entirely: competitors navigate by map, compass, and road book only, which makes it as much a test of a vehicle’s dependability as it is of the crew’s skill.

Killman already races a MINI in American Rally Association stage events, and Ferrer spent years managing championship rally programs in Mexico before becoming a co-driver herself, picking up three regional titles and riding alongside Benito Guerra at La Carrera Panamericana. She now works in BMW Group’s Mexico communications team, which makes this entry as much a marketing vehicle as a competitive one.

MINI hasn’t said what the car is mechanically or which model it’s built from. What it has said is that the entry previews a new, more rugged and adventure-oriented variant, set for a full reveal this fall, language that lines up precisely with the camouflaged Countryman prototype MINI has been testing in the Rocky Mountains ahead of its October debut.

BMW has run this exact play before

This is BMW Group’s sixth straight year at the Rebelle Rally, a streak that started with a Rolls-Royce Cullinan in 2019 and has run through the X2 M35i (2023), the X3 M50 (2024), and the X5 (2025, which took the Bone Stock Award and a second-place X-Cross finish over 1,700 miles).

The 2023 X2 run is the one that matters most here, because it’s the template MINI appears to be following almost beat for beat. Days after the X2 M35i’s world premiere, BMW put it straight into the Rebelle Rally’s X-Cross class with an all-women crew, drivers Rebecca Donaghe and navigator Sedona Blinson, and the car took second place on its debut. “It can be especially challenging to bring a new model you don’t get to train with or even shakedown in the dirt before day zero,” Donaghe said at the time, “but when the x factor is BMW, the engineering and capabilities are proven and solid.”

The X2’s rally build wasn’t a stripped-down race car. BMW’s own rundown of the modifications lists Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires, Rotiform wheels, a Thule roof platform, Smittybilt recovery gear, a custom cargo-area spare tire carrier, and a custom underbody skid plate: additions that read more like a factory accessory catalog than a rally cage.

That matches what we saw ourselves. We got up close with the X2 shortly after the 2023 event, and the underbody reinforcements in particular didn’t look like an aftermarket bolt-on. The fit and finish were clean enough that they could have rolled off the line that way. If MINI is running the same playbook with the Countryman, that’s the detail worth watching for: not whether the rally car survives the desert, but whether its off-road hardware looks like it belongs in a MINI dealership rather than a garage.

What it means for the Countryman Rugged Edition

MINI has already dipped a toe into this segment. South Africa got a limited-run Countryman Rugged Edition with General Grabber AT3 tires and cosmetic off-road styling, and the US has an Adventure Package and pricier Adventure Plus Package bundling a roof rack base, all-weather mats, and JCW-style wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber. Neither is close to what’s been spotted testing in Colorado.

The camouflaged prototype photographed in the Rockies goes considerably further: noticeably increased suspension travel, chunky all-terrain tires, a roof-mounted cargo box or tent, and a rear bumper fitted with a trailer hitch receiver and electrical connector. It appears to be based on the Countryman S All4, which would put a production version well north of $40,000 once the off-road hardware is added in. MINI’s design chief, Holger Hampf, has been telegraphing this for months, telling Autocar the brand has “witnessed the trend of the outdoor lifestyle and driving out of the city to spend some days in nature,” and telling Motor1 that an adventure-focused production model is coming “in the next couple of years.”

Put the pieces together and the Rebelle Rally entry looks less like a one-off publicity stunt and more like a pre-launch stress test. BMW used the X2’s rally debut to prove the M35i’s off-road parts held up under real desert conditions before customers ever saw them at a dealer. If MINI is doing the same thing with the Countryman, the specific upgrades this desert-spec car survives 1,500 GPS-free miles on (suspension travel, tire choice, underbody protection, cargo mounting) are a reasonable preview of what shows up on the options sheet in October.

We won’t know for certain until MINI lifts the camouflage this fall. But the pattern is hard to miss: a new BMW Group off-road variant, introduced to the world through the Rebelle Rally, driven by an all-women team, days or weeks ahead of its official unveiling. BMW ran it in 2023. MINI is running it again in 2026.

Our Take

MINI’s Rebelle Rally debut isn’t really about winning a rally class, though a strong finish wouldn’t hurt the marketing. It’s a live-fire test of the same hardware likely to define the production Countryman Rugged Edition, using a formula BMW already proved out with the X2 M35i three years ago. If that car’s underbody work is any indication, whatever MINI unveils in October should look a lot more factory-finished than “off-road special edition” usually implies. And it might just give us a glimpse at the final production car.

“The Mini remained virtually unchanged for 40 years,” van Hooydonk says in the film. “It was our task as designers to preserve its soul, while leading it into a new era, not as a copy, but as the new MINI with all the signature MINI characteristics.” It’s a good line, and it holds up. What six minutes doesn’t have room for is just how contentious those years actually were inside BMW, or how differently “preserving the soul” could have played out.

A Design Battle Fought Across Two Countries

When BMW acquired Rover in 1994, it inherited the Mini along with a design team in Gaydon that had its own ideas about where the car should go. Meanwhile, a separate effort was quietly underway in Munich. That disagreement produced some genuinely wild dead ends. It didn’t win. But the tension between those two philosophies, evolution versus reinvention, is exactly what BMW’s new video tries to compress into a tidy soundbite, and exactly what a full accounting of the era shows was never that simple. The Concept That Actually Won the Argument

If one car settled the debate, it was the ACV30, built in 1997 to mark the 30th anniversary of Mini’s Monte Carlo Rally wins. It was extreme: mid-engined, low, and never remotely close to production-ready. But internally it did something no memo could, it gave BMW’s design team a physical answer to what a modern, performance-focused Mini could look like without simply shrinking a BMW. By the time the R50 debuted at the 2000 Paris Motor Show, the arguments had mostly resolved themselves in Stephenson’s favour: round headlights, short overhangs, a wheel at each corner, and a cheeky face that owed more to caricature than nostalgia. It’s worth remembering BMW’s original sales target for the whole MINI line was just 100,000 units. The R50 blew past that within its first couple of years, which tells you the design gamble, however contested internally, paid off in a way even BMW didn’t fully expect.

Twenty-Five Years On, the Argument Isn’t Over

What’s notable about BMW’s new video, and about Hampf’s comments in the accompanying release, is the acknowledgment that this work is never finished. “No MINI looks like any other,” Hampf says. “MINI gives people the opportunity to express their lifestyle and tell their own story.” That’s true, and it’s also a fairly convenient way to describe a brand that has occasionally struggled to decide which of its own reference points, round headlights, toggle switches, a specific proportion of cabin to bonnet, are load-bearing and which are just nostalgia.

The current “Charismatic Simplicity” language, visible in the MINI Cooper Electric’s puristic surfacing and its round central display, is BMW’s latest answer to that question. It strips detail back rather than adding it, which is either a confident evolution of the brand’s original packaging logic or a quiet admission that some of the fussier design flourishes added over two decades didn’t need to be there in the first place. Probably both.

BMW is using this design anniversary to set up a bigger one: 2026 also marks 25 years since the modern MINI entered production, celebrated with the limited-run MINI Cooper Oxford Edition. The design story and the production story are being told together deliberately. It’s a reasonable piece of anniversary marketing. It’s also worth remembering, every time BMW frames this history as a straight line from Issigonis to today, that the actual path ran through a mid-engined rally concept, a pair of shelved electric pods, and a genuine, unresolved argument about what MINI was supposed to be. The fact that the brand still hasn’t fully settled that argument is probably the healthiest thing about it.
