The Kenya Community Development Foundation was founded in 1997 to support Kenyan communities to drive their own development priorities by linking them to resources and information. It promotes sustainable development approaches, including local resource mobilization and helping communities to utilize resources that they have rather than depend on external resources. The African Grantmakers Network, a project of the Kenya Community Development Foundation, is a continent-wide network of African grantmakers launched in 2009 to facilitate networking and mutual learning among established and emerging African philanthropic institutions. It focuses on elevating the role of wealthy Africans as key to realizing greater governance, development, and general welfare of Africa. This grant will support research activities on various forms of giving in Africa, mobilizing rich Africans to give to deserving causes, and holding a conference for African grantmakers in South Africa to share knowledge and experiences.

This grant will leverage funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to support the creation of a master plan for the City of Flint. The master planning process offers the City and its people an opportunity to collectively chart a future direction for Flint and, through the resulting plan, coordinate communication and decision making around land use, economic development, and private and public investments. The process will also help the City assess and align its organizational and other resources in order to promote the efficiency and effectiveness of public and private development. The grant will build the capacity of the City's planning function by supporting salary for planning staff, and will help the City engage outside planning expertise through contracted services.

The UNESCO Oliver Tambo Chair of Human Rights, based at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, was established through funding by UNESCO to advance human rights, respect for democratic values, peace, and social justice. Past support enabled the chair to train and support women and youth in the Nkonkobe region of the Eastern Cape province to meaningfully participate in local governance and decision-making processes that affect their lives. The training enabled these groups to explore emerging economic opportunities, especially through the municipal and other government processes and increased their chances to get employed. This grant will assist the UNESCO Oliver Tambo Chair of Human Rights to continue to empower women and young people to enhance their skills so that they can become self-reliant and self-sufficient. It will also expand the project to other areas within the Nkonkobe region and will raise awareness on human rights and how people can engage as active citizens for their basic needs to be realized.

The Institute for Policy Studies works in collaboration with nongovernmental organizations, academics, and other stakeholders to promote financing for sustainable energy and to develop alternative proposals for the future of the global economy based on environmental sustainability, democracy, and economic fairness. This grant increase will support training materials and workshops for policy advocates on public and private finance mechanisms for climate mitigation and energy. Support will enable the grantee to consolidate the curriculum from an initial pilot course and develop new materials tailored to the issues that will be debated at the Rio+20 meetings that will be held in Brazil in June 2012.

Oil Change International is a research and policy reform organization working to encourage progress in reducing emissions from greenhouse gases and address energy access for the poor in developing countries. Oil Change International's International Program focuses on reforming the energy-related lending of public multilateral financial institutions, export credit agencies, key private financial institutions, and government subsidies for fossil fuels. Over the last grant period, Oil Change International helped to secure positive policy shifts in World Bank lending on energy and provided key policy research on fossil fuel subsidies. For the next grant period, it will continue its work analyzing and researching the scope, as well as the environmental and social implications, of current global fossil fuel subsidies. In addition, Oil Change International will continue its leadership in an international nongovernmental organization coalition to build awareness among emerging market countries' decisionmakers.

International financial institutions, both public and private, play a key role in financing energy and infrastructure projects around the world that will have important impacts on the environment. With this grant increase, Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide will continue to provide legal, scientific, technical, and organizational support to its network of local leaders, who are monitoring and analyzing energy and infrastructure investments. Support will target leaders in emerging economies such as Brazil, China, India, and South Africa and will provide them with the tools they need to address the priorities and impacts of new dynamics in global finance. This grant increase will enable the grantee to provide a training internship for a young advocate working on international environmental advocacy in Colombia.

The Nonprofit Listening Post Project monitors in a systematic and timely way what is happening to nonprofit organizations in the United States. Key features include a network of over 1,150 grassroots nonprofits that serve as the project's "listening posts" on the major field-wide developments; regular surveying of these organizations using a rapid turnaround, web-based technology; roundtable discussions among the innovative executives identified through these surveys; case studies examining particularly interesting innovations in more depth; and regular, broadly distributed communiqués on survey and roundtable results. A grant increase will support the engagement of an outside consultant to help answer several important questions about the need for up-to-date data on key nonprofit trends and challenges and the value and effectiveness of the Nonprofit Listening Post Project in meeting this need. The project is conducted by the Center for Civil Society Studies at the Johns Hopkins University, one of America's premier research universities.

The Intermediary Support for Organizing Communities program provides seed grants and technical assistance to emerging community-based organizations serving low-income neighborhoods. The program is implemented through a foundation-sponsored network of community organizing intermediaries. This grant will enable Southern Echo to provide grants and technical assistance to community organizations in the Southeast region. Southern Echo has been an intermediary in the program since 1999, and is one of five intermediary organizations receiving grants as part of the 2012 Intermediary Support for Organizing Communities program.

The Intermediary Support for Organizing Communities program provides seed grants and technical assistance to emerging community-based organizations serving low-income neighborhoods. The program is implemented through a foundation-sponsored network of community organizing intermediaries. This grant will enable the National Council of La Raza to provide grants and technical assistance to community organizations in the southwest and western regions of the U.S. and in Puerto Rico. The National Council of La Raza has been an intermediary in the program since 1981, and is one of five intermediary organizations receiving grants as part of the 2012 Intermediary Support for Organizing Communities program.

The Council of Michigan Foundations is a state-wide association of grantmakers that provides its members with educational programs, technical assistance, networking opportunities, advocacy with policymakers and regulators, and collaborative work with leading national and regional philanthropic associations. Recently, the council has been focusing on membership engagement and retention, new member recruitment, and organizational capacity through pursuing four main objectives: (a) advocacy on legislative goals; (b) operating a networked learning community; (c) supporting membership collaboration on critical issues; and (d) operating a model regional association. The council continues to host a number of initiatives including the Office of Foundation Liaison, the Office of Urban and Metropolitan Initiatives, and the Michigan Land Use Funders Group. The council also organizes an annual conference. A grant increase will support a joint conference in the fall of 2012 for Michigan foundations and nonprofits, which will be co-organized by the council and the Michigan Nonprofit Association.

This grant provides continuing support to Washington University for a statewide demonstration of children's savings accounts. Because the demonstration is being conducted within the state of Oklahoma's existing college savings plan system, it could serve as a prototype policy for expanding asset-building opportunities from thousands to millions of families. Key goals for the grant period are: 1) manage year four implementation activities; 2) undertake account monitoring research and reporting efforts; and 3) communicate research findings and other lessons to a broad group of stakeholders, including policymakers and the media.

The Great Lakes Compact, an interstate agreement, is intended to prevent the diversion of waters outside the basin and to effectively manage the use of water within the basin. Despite some recent positive signs, the Great Lakes states have been slow to implement the compact, including its water conservation and efficiency provisions. The Natural Resources Defense Council, a national organization with a strong regional presence, will provide tools and expertise at the regional and state levels to help implement the compact's water conservation and efficiency elements.
