We left from Winfield at 1:30 or so and didn't arrive in Dallas until after 9. It was a long trip to say the least. We had the pleasure of staying at a nice Hilton Hotel. The next morning we went to the country club and had this amazing breakfast that was free! The club had a few indoor courts so we hit a little after we ate breakfast and then had lunch at the club afterwards. It was also very delicious but I wasn't that hungry because I had such a big breakfast. The manager of the club gave us a good speech about our tennis game and how tennis is a very mental sport. It was very beneficial. After the speech we did a lot of drilling and I felt like that was something that we really needed. After drilling we had dinner prepared for us at the club again and it was as good as breakfast and lunch were. The next day we played outdoors because it was so nice outside. We had the chance to go to the Galeria after we played and I bought a few new tops. The next morning we played for about an hour at the club and then took off back to Winfield. It only took us about 6 hours to get back to Winfield so we made good time coming back. It was a great trip and I am glad I had the oppurtunity to be a part of it.

Builder Sports

Hello and greetings from Winfield, Ks...this week as we look ahead for our Moundbuilder sports teams, it is going to be a tuff one... There is a part of me that doesn’t feel like I am ready to go out in the real world and find a big girl job. It is weird to think that I will be done in May because it seems like just yesterday I was going through freshmen orientation. When I am asked what year I am in school, I hesitate and say I am a senior but it’s weird to hear myself say that. There are many things I am looking forward to in my future. I am excited about having a place of my own and I am even excited about having a job but it is finding a job that is a little terrifying. Even though I am a little worried about everything, I think it will all work out in the end. Keeping the fingers crossed!

Merry Christmas!

As we get nearer and nearer to December 25th, the students, faculty, staff, Ambassadors, and all of us here in the office of Admission at Southwestern College would like to wish you and yours a very merry Christmas and much prosperity in our new year! There are also a few community dinners in the area where anyone is welcome to give thanks with a turkey dinner!

In Cole Hall (the freshmen girls' dorms), the girls have decided if they want to switch roomies at semester. All over campus people are looking forward to next semester already, and Christmas break of course!

Tomorrow is the official "last day". Happy Thanksgiving!!

Proud to be a Builder!

I come from a small town in Western Kansas, and my decision to come to school here at Southwestern was crazy but bold to most of my friends from home. I was moving far away to a region of Kansas that’s a mystery to us Westerners, I didn't know a single soul, and I would not be unable to come home on the weekends very easily.

I must say that coming to Southwestern was the best decision I made and it has transformed my life greatly. My life down here in Winfield is so much different than my life up in WaKeeney, and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else. My friends from back home don't understand this. However, this weekend a friend from home is coming to visit me for the first time, and I am totally pumped for her to come. I am so excited to introduce her to my friends, my school, and basically my new life. I hope she likes it as much as I do, and hopefully she will finally understand why I love it down here and why I choose to stay here instead of moving closer to home.

Around Campus

Students, faculty, and staff here at Southwestern college are enjoying a beautiful day. As I try to remember all the reasons why I decided on SC, the one clear thing that I do know is that I liked the people. I felt like I was wanted and others went out of their way to get me here.

I have grown to love Southwestern, and when I think back on my past few years here, I am convinced that the reason why I love SC is the people. I have met some of the nicest, craziest, most unique individuals, and I feel very blessed to be part of their lives. Southwestern and everyone that I have met here will have a special place in my heart forever.

Brooke Newcomer

Fall in Love with Autumn!

Hey There!

It's finally fall here at SC and the campus looks beautiful! We've shown up with KSN at area high school football games since the high school football season kicked off back in September and we are into the home stretch!

If you are from Clearwater or Cheney, make sure to come out to the Cheney vs. Clearwater football game in Clearwater tonight! Kickoff is at 7:00 pm, but make sure to come out early and grab a brat, chips and a drink, see KSN personalities Dave Freeman and Jim Kobbe broadcasting live, and of course, stop by the Southwestern College tent to register to win some great prizes and to learn about SC!

And, if trick or treating isn't in your plans tomorrow night, head out to Wichita Heights High School for part 2 in our doubleheader this week to close out the football season. Heights is playing Derby at 7:00 pm, but of course, you can come out early to eat, be entertained and find out some really cool stuff!

Finally, if college football is more to your liking, hop in the car, and come on out to Winfield Saturday afternoon at 1:30 pm to see our very own Southwestern Moundbuilder football team take on the Tabor College Bluejays in this KCAC matchup in our very own Sonner Stadium. Of course, if you can't be there in person, make sure to log onto www.buildersports.com to hear the play by play with Curt Caden, Tommy Castor and Matt Webb.

So, get your pads on, lace up those cleats and let's hit the gridiron with Southwestern College...the Jinx is on!

SC Movie Night!

So, one of the most favorite activities of the year for students at Southwestern is SC Movie Night. Normally, Campus Life holds 4-6 movie nights per year, and they happen at the Cowley Cinemas between Winfield and Arkansas City.

The next movie night is coming up tomorrow evening, and the buzz is definitely growing among SC students, with the announcement being made through posters up all around campus and the daily e-mail announcement called the JinxTale.

Some of the great movies playing are Saw 5, Nights in Rodanthe, High School Musical 3, and Eagle Eye. The great thing about Movie Night is when you become a student at Southwestern, you get a chance to see great movies, just by showing your student ID card!

Fall Sports Galore Part 2

Hey gang,

Well, on Wednesday we updated you on the busy week of Southwestern sports and we only actually profiled matchups through yesterday, so here is a look ahead to the SC sports schedule for this weekend.

This weekend, the SC volleyball squad who are 7-13 (4-8), will travel to Sterling College for a tournament. Let's break down the schedule for them.

Tonight, the men's and women's soccer teams travel to McPherson College for what looks to be two highly contested matchups. Currently, the men, coached by Ruben Sanchez, are 3-8-1 (1-4) in the KCAC and are looking to snap a 4 game losing streak. The SC women, coached by Joe Wood, are tied for 3rd with McPherson in the KCAC with a 6-4-2 (2-2-1) record. The women will play at 5:30 pm and the men will take the field at 8:00 pm.

The action continues tomorrow with the fiery SC volleyball squad. After dropping yesterday's matchup to Kansas Wesleyan, the 7-12 (4-7) Lady Builder host the KCAC leaders: Friends University in Stewart Field House. The SC volleyball team has made massive improvements this year under the coaching of Cori Meyer, in her 3rd season as head coach. Several KCAC teams have been surprised by the Builders, and so the rest of the matches this year, including tomorrow evening's will be exciting games.

The men's golf team tomorrow will be in Silvis, Ill. for the NAIA Preview International. The invitational tournament, held every year in the fall, is hosted by St. Ambrose University. Coach Brad Sexson has several returners on his team and welcome some new faces to the golf squad as well.

That gets us through the next sporting events for Southwestern College for tonight and tomorrow, check back for previews of the sporting events in store for Southwestern College on Friday and Saturday!

~Tommy

SC Professor To Present Recital

Daniel Stevens, assistant professor of music and Mazie Barnett Kilmer Chair for string education at Southwestern College, will present a chamber recital on Monday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m., in Messenger Recital Hall.
Stevens will be joined by his brother, violist Phillip Stevens, a musician with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, and pianist Timothy Shook, professor of music and division chair for performing arts. This weekend is designated SC Family Weekend with many great events including the Builder Tailgate Party Saturday morning at 11:15 am. The parking lot between Stewart Field House and White P.E. will be the place to be, as there will be a barbeque with hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, chips and a drink for only 3 dollars. A snow cone machine will also be there and the event is even for the littlest Moundbuilder with inflatables, face painint and a clown.
Southwestern's own radio station 100.3 The Jinx will be broadcasting live from the tailgate party and it goes all the way up until 1:30 pm, when it will be Southwestern football versus the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes at Sonner Stadium. It should be a great conference game to come out and watch.
Remember, if you can't make it to the game, tune into the Moundbuilder Sports Network which is cable channel 20 in Winfield, online at http://www.buildersports.com/ or at the flagship station of Southwestern sports, 100.3 The Jinx. Curt Caden, Matt Webb and myself will have the call of the game starting at 1:00 pm.

Also, the South Kansas Symphony will be perfoming this weekend on Sunday afternoon at 3 pm in Richardson Auditorium, and the official start of Homecoming Week (SC In The Spotlight) is Sunday as well with the pick up of Spirit Billboards and Cosmic Bowling happening Sunday evening. After that, Homecoming is in full swing.

I can speak for most students and anyone on campus that Homecoming Week will be a crazy and fun week, so check back to the official blog of Southwestern College and the Admission website throughout next week for all of the details and the recaps of the great events!

~Tommy

Record Enrollment!

Southwestern College’s enrollment has set a record this year, with an official count of 1,823 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled on the Winfield campus and in professional studies programs. Professional studies classes are offered in Wichita, Junction City, Midwest City (Okla.), and online.
This “head-count” (a snapshot of the 20th day of classes) includes both undergraduate and graduate students. Last year’s fall head-count was 1,703. The class of incoming freshman was especially strong – at 159, it is 15 per cent over last fall’s 138.
College president Dick Merriman (at left) attributes the college’s growth – its enrollment has doubled in the past 10 years – to the college’s ability to understand and address the needs of distinctive student populations. “Residential students on our main campus want a learning experience that is very different from that desired by working adults who are completing degrees on a part-time basis and at a distance. As the college’s people have listened, learned, and responded, we’ve grown,” Merriman says.
Also measured in the federal government’s official 20th day counts are number of “full-time equivalent” (FTE) students. This number is calculated by dividing the total credit hours taken by 15 (a full-time class load).
The residential Winfield campus posted an FTE of 589, with 318 FTE in professional studies on-ground and online. (Professional studies programs are designed for working adults, and most learners in these programs are part-time students.) This total FTE of 907 is nearly 18 per cent higher than last year’s total of 770.

SC Makes Huge Steps In Going Green

Anthony Cortese To Speak At Southwestern

One of the nation’s top advocates for sustainable lifestyles is coming to Southwestern College. Anthony Cortese will give a public lecture TONIGHT at 7 p.m., in Mossman 101.

Cortese is the co-director of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Southwestern College President Dick Merriman was an early signer of this compact, and the college now is engaging in progressively green practices.

Academic dean Andy Sheppard says that Cortese will meet with several students, faculty, and administrators around campus and challenge them to think about various ways the college can “go green.”

“I think the thing that is great about having Dr. Cortese here is that he is not coming to give us a top 10 list of things to do in order to reduce our carbon foot-print,” Sheppard says. “Rather, his visit will be spent on helping us to make a culture change in the way we consume our resources.”

Cortese was formerly the commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. and is a founding and current member of the board of directors of The Natural Step US, and a founding member of the Environmental Business Council of New England. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been a consultant to UNEP, a member of the EPA Science Advisory Board and the President's Council on Sustainable Development's Education Task Force. He is also a founding member of the U.S. Board of Councilors for the China – U.S. Center for Sustainable Development.

There is no admission charge. For more information about Cortese’s visit to Southwestern College, contact Jason Speegle, Green Team director, at (620) 229-6311.

And in other Green Team news...

From Winfield Daily Courier: Tuesday, September 30th

Thanks to some hard work and an unusual find by Jason Speegle, almost 30 trees were saved from the paper mill.
Speegle (at left), director of the Green Team at Southwestern College, was walking near campus when he saw numerous boxes filled with old textbooks sitting in a dumpster. As director of the sustainable enviroment group on campus, he was well aware of his chance to make a difference. He recruited Kate Norton, assistant women's soccer coach, along with several of the soccer players and they began the seemingly endless task of preparing all of the thrown out books to be recycled.

Textbook recycling is far from an easy chore, according to Speegle.

"You have to tear off the front and back covers," Speegle said. "Then you have to physically tear the books into several parts in order to satisfy the requirements of the city of Winfield. The books averaged about 175 pages per book."

Slowly, but surely, the small group of students, Speegle, and Norton prepared each of the discarded textbooks to be recycled and a crowd of students began gathering and helping. Eventually 20 students had turned up to help.

"It ended up taking us around three hours to get finished," Speegle reports.

According to Speegle's estimation, they saved just over 26 trees.

As part of the new Southwestern program, Speegle is recruiting and leading students in activities such as recycling, conserving resources on campus and in the community, and pioneering college use of renewable energy sources. The program promotes sustainability education as well as student leadership development.

"I don't want to be the center of attention about environmental issues here," Speegle said. "Everyone on this campus can be an environmentalist.
