There is a mystique about America’s southernmost playground, the Florida Keys. Prepare yourself to sample some of the best tropical drinks and key lime treats while you are there. Sometimes identified as the Conch Republic, the Florida Keys are a chain-like cluster of more than a thousand low-lying islands that spread across azure waters. Barely a foot above sea level in some places, the Keys dip around 220-miles, curving south and west of mainland Florida. The island thrived simply because the coral reefs brought lots of ships to Davy Jones Locker. Many became millionaires from salvaging the numerous shipwrecks. At one point the people of Key West became the wealthiest city per capita in the United States.

Duval Street

Looking for some action? Duval Street is your goal. Stop and have a beer at Sloppy Joe’s bar and restaurant or Hemingway’s watering hole. If your interests lean toward Jimmy Buffet, persist to Margarita Ville – only four short blocks down the street. Up and down Duval souvenir shops, bars, restaurants, and people watching beckon everyone to the narrow sidewalks. You might also come across one of Key West famous chickens roaming the street. If you feel like it, take the street from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico in no time. For those who don’t feel like walking, they have the world-famous Conch Tour Train.

Southernmost Point Buoy

This area at the southern point of Key West is the nearest place to Cuba to civilians in the United States. The buoy is brilliantly painted and nestled in a great part of town with several nearby attractions like the Hemingway house. You can take some pictures with the loved ones while you are there and take home a fun memory. At sunrise, the view across the water is magnificent.

Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum

This is an excellent place to stop if you’re a Hemingway fan or if you haven’t even heard of him. The trip lasts approximately a half hour and is full of interesting information about a complex personality and local legend. ¬†Even though Hemingway only lived for about ten years in the Key West, his impression will forever be felt throughout the island. Sloppy Joe’s is home to about 50 six-toed cats, you will spot a few descendants of Hemingway’s original six-toed pal Snow Ball. You can decide to wander by and get a good glimpse or choose their tours which are available 9-5pm all year round.

A tour to Key West is taking in the various water sports: parasailing, snorkeling, jet skis, deep sea fishing, riding glass bottom boats, or just relaxing on the beaches on the Atlantic Ocean side. Also, an excursion to The Dry Tortugas National Park (Fort Jefferson) leaves daily from Key West.
