Hollywood Needs to Bite the Bullet

As the year comes to a close, the festivities come to life in Hollywood and the movie community. The best films of the year are being released in theatres. Producers are throwing parties to promote their films. This should be a time of celebration and commemoration of the success of the year and the wonderful art that has been produced.

However, that is not the case this year nor was it last year. Once again the award shows are facing a certain problem with the shadow of one word no one likes to hear: STRIKE. The same can be said about last year when the ScreenWriters went on strike, and we all know how long that lasted.

Due to that strike, the T.V. season was completely ruined resulting in no new material being able to be created. Films in there own little way were affected too. Shutting down anything that needed a rewrite or a little tweak here or there.

This year though there are new players on the scene, the Screen Actors Guild. They have been threatening to strike and will send out ballots early next month asking members to vote on the possible of a strike. SAG has been in discussion with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers but have resulted in nothing short of a standstill.

However, there is still light at the end of the tunnel as big name celebrities such as George Cloney, and Tom Hanks, and many others have signed a petition against the strike. They at least see that there is no sense to being striking in the current times we are facing. Personally, I think that SAG should be kicked upside the head, and told to look at the world around them. For once in a blue moon celebrities are not the focus of the country's attention. Nobody wants to give a damn about Actors making more and more money when people are losing their homes and jobs left and right.

The ballots will be cast after the Golden Globes, so there will be a show for them this year instead of that god awful press conference that was the Golden Globes last year. However, the same fate may not hold true for the Oscars. If the SAG members opt to strike then the Oscars' telecast could be in grave danger of no stars showing.

In the long run SAG must ask themselves is it truly all about them and based on that answer we will or wont have the Oscars this year. I hope for their sake that they get it together because I'm tired of all the strikes in Hollywood.

A new look for the Oscars

In an attempt to get more people to watch the Academy Awards the show is being completely revamped starting with the host. this years host will be none other than People's Sexiest Man Alive: Hugh Jackman. However why stop there the shows producer, director, and music supervisor will be all new for the 2009 award show. Let me know what you think about these changes and weather or not we should stick with tradition and have a comedian be the host or does it not matter.

The Golden Globe Nominations

Its that time of year again and no I'm not talking about the Christmas season. I'm am talking about the awards season for the best films of the year. Now while there are many little awards handed out around this time of the year in cities around the country there are really only two awards ceremonies that truly matter: The Golden Globes and the Oscars. The Golden Globes(GG) come first, and have in the past been known to pick the winners at the Oscars. The GG nominations were handed out earlier this week and were meet with some heavy criticism. Both the Dark Knight and Milk were handed only a single nomination, both in acting(Heath Ledger, and Sean Penn). Here are two of the years highly reviewed films and yet they only produce a single nomination each. For me thats a tad bit sad. But thats not the only thing I have wrong with the nominations.

The foreign press gave a nomination to Tom Cruise for a performance nothing short of a cameo in Tropic Thunder. Also nominated was fellow actor Robert Downing Jr for the same film in the same category or Best Supporting Actor in a film. When these two were nominated, while their performances may have been funny they caused some one else not to be nominated who may have had a better performance. Such as Josh Brolin in Milk or W, or James Franco in Milk.

Now while I may have not liked some of the nominations this year the five films nominated for Best Picture however were well chosen in what may be a rather tight race this year. The only problem I have with the Five selected is that they didnt include the Dark Knight. Those five films are:

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, FROST/NIXON, THE READER, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, and SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

Watch The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight opens this Friday July 18. It is setting up to be this summer's biggest success story and is also creating quite the Oscar buzz. While Ledger performance is being called exceptional by critics and is sure to cause a cult following only time will tell if the academy will actually award someone who has passed on. Make sure to see it and leave comments on how you feel about Ledger's performance as the great Joker.

Hancock: super hero or just a bum

I recently had the opportunity to view Will Smith's latest film, Hancock. This is a film about a super hero who is immortal, can fly, and has super immense strength. However those are his good traits. Hancock also suffers from a alcohol addiction and is a homeless bum. The film's first half is nicely paced as the audience is not put to sleep by the introduction, however once you think you now were the story is going the filmmakers throw a curve ball into the movie. An unexpected twist and now half way through we have a totally different film on our hands. Overall the movie was good and entertaining, however the movie's story line leaves you looking for more. I would like to stress the PG-13 rating on this movie because of the heavy use of language. This film is a totally new look for Will Smith: he is a drunk and a fowl mouth. I applaud him from trying out new roles and characters. My only wish and hope for him however is that he gets better at them as he goes.

I give it three and a half out of five stars.

The Dark Knight

Many people are all pumped up to go see this new batman movie. The only problem I have with all the press on this movie is that if Heath Ledger was still alive would this film be getting all this hype. Dont get me wrong this film looks to be the best batman ever, or at least since the very first batman (1989) directed by Tim Burton and also featuring the joker as the main villian. There is something about the joker character that people cant seem to get enough of. It might be his ruthlessness, or lack of remorse that draws the attention of the audience. Non the less whatever it is, the attraction has gained a large following and Im going to go out on a limb here and saw that the Dark Knight is going to be the highest grossing film of the year. Remeber to check it out in theatres July 18 and if you have an IMAX near you, this would be a great film to see in that format.
