What made this movie bearable were the big names in acting: Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Julia Roberts, and Emily Watson, to name a few. But it was unbelievably depressing and wanted to make you drown your fish after experiencing the multi-levels of family dysfunction and depressive story elements. I’ve never found child abuse particularly entertaining.

Julia Roberts pulls off a leading role which makes me take her more seriously as a talented, growing actress, alongside her newer film, Larry Crowne.

You could praise the movie as a complex drama of limitless proportions, but when I watch a film and feel the need to mutilate my body afterwards to bring some sense of joy back to my life, then I think it fails overall.

Ryan Reynolds does pull off the tortured soul well. And, Carrie-Anne Moss, whether intended or not, brings an element of sexy and beauty to the movie that was about its only bright spot. And, ‘I (still) Love You, Beth Cooper (2009)’, not to ignore the versatile Hayden Panettiere.

Willem Dafoe…you are one scary dude. Stay evil.

I rate the movie a 3 Bleeper as I would watch it again, only if it’s the only movie on the shelf on a very rainy day.

– Uncle Bebo, Feb. 18, 2012

Logline: The Taylor family is devastated by an accident that takes place on the day their matriarch is due to graduate from college — decades after leaving to raise her children.

Director: Dennis Lee
Writers: Robert Frost (poem), Dennis Lee
Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe and Emily Watson

Action | Biography | Crime

I did no research for this movie nor did I watch a trailer. I went to it at the dollar theater, blindly. I was jolted into a world I had not known. I was thankful my eyes were opened to another world, a sad one, but one filled with hope for many children from the involvement of concerned soldiers and citizens.

The movie is based on the real-life American gun-toting pastor, bad-boy-turned-Christian, Sam Childers. Childers, played by Gerard Butler, was a violent, drug-addicted, low life, hell bent on destroying himself and those around him. After finding Jesus with help from his ex-stripper wife, played by Michelle Monaghan, he went to Africa on a three-week mission to apply his construction skills to help villagers.

Childers felt called of God after this to build an orphanage in the middle of a Central African area torn by a civil war between the Lord’s Resistance Army and the Sudanese Army. The brutality against children and innocent villagers by the LRA has been monstrously massive and horrific, from cutting off lips to cannibalism, from mass carnage and child abductions to sex slavery of little girls.

I rate the movie with the highest number of bleeps, 5, pertaining to it’s portrayal of children in real need, it’s not playing down the Christian theme of the story, and it’s strong acting and epic, scenic, storytelling.

Uncle Bebo says that this here movie was a dramedy. It had a bunch of sub-themes running around, but simple enough to keep up with in a simple plot. The movie explores forgiveness, restarts, fresh starts, pissed off goofballs and upstarts. It had a couple of real funny pregnant situations in it, too. Oh, yeah, Robert DeNiro is dying of cancer.

Anyway, the story centers around the ball dropping in Time Square…don’t go to sleep. The movie is dizzyingly cut uppish in scenes and if you’re ADD you should be able to keep up with it well.

Some hot chics sing and dance in this movie. Bon Jovi does some mediocre songs. Anyway, go see it now that it’s past New Year’s, cause you wouldn’t want to see it at New Years and enjoy the movie more than your night.

Or see it next year just after Christmas so you’ll know what New Years Eve is all about and how you should think about it. That girl on the Million Dollar Boxer Baby movie has a big part in the show and gives it some real emotional depth. I think she needs a good smacker on the lips with Uncle Bebo’s lips, mistletoe or not.

I rate it three bleeps ’cause I’d see it again on a real rainy day. It did make me laugh a lot.

I’d give it more bleeps, but it was too emotionally gooey for macho guys like me. Somebody should have at least been blow to bits in the movie or had the giant ball smash them to pieces.
