First of all, I want to appologize for the lack of shows. The short version is our site crashed for the second time in three months. We are no longer using that host and our now on a more stable and professional storage plan. This problem is squashed and will not happen again. I know we are three episodes behind, including the amazing Christmas episode, and my goal is to get these out to you quickly. This is a very special episode of MovieCopia. We’ve reached our one year anniversary! I want to first thank all of the listeners for joining me on this crazy ride. You have been so supportive and kind over the past year. You guys and girls are the best group I could ask for. Thank you for everything.

I wanted to make this episode special. I didn’t want it to just be your average MovieCopia episode. This is the one year show! It had to be epic! Naturally, we needed to have an epic guest. Who better than the lady who was my original partner in crime at the start? We’ve come full circle as Iris returns to the show and we discuss… Gary Daniels! The asskicking Englishman makes his second appearance as we cover the film Hawk’s Vengeance. Does it live up to the high bar set by Fist Of The North Star, our first ever reviewed film?

We also have our first ever interview on MovieCopia. I am joined by Ron Newcomb to discuss his soon to be released Lord Of The Rings inspired comedy, Rise Of The Fellowship. I’m very greatful to Ron for taking the time to give us the low-down on this project. Check it out when it’s available everyone.

Warning! The end of the show may be a bit sappy as everyone who has ever guested on the show is thanked. Get your tissues ready. Hahaha. We close out the show with a very kind Birthday wish from the fine folks over at Badasses Boobs and Bodycounts. Iris may in fact leave herself a message.

V/H/S2 Review!

Before we can examine the present... We must examine the past!

I remember the first time I saw V/H/S. I had heard a ton of buzz about the film and found out it was available on iTunes as a "See it before it's in theaters" selection. I didn't even give a second thought to the $9.99 price tag for the rental. Not only was the film horror, it was also found footage! There was no way I wasn't seeing this as soon as I possibly could.

To me, V/H/S was everything a found footage anthology should be. All the stories were strong, even if one was a bit slow, and I had a genuine sense of wonder when watching it. I've always been a fan of anthology films. I loved the idea of different short stories being told. This is probably why I prefer horror short fiction but I'm getting off track. V/H/S was the best found footage film I had ever seen. I have watched it probably ten times since that initial viewing and my love for it has grown. To say I had extremely high hopes going into V/H/S2 is a massive understatement. This was Avengers level hype for me. I did not watch any trailers or clips before viewing the film. I didn't even read the plot synopsis. I wanted to be completely surprised. Did V/H/S2 stack up to the original? Would it fall into the "Sequel hell" that so many other films have? Well Moviecopians... Let's find out!

I'm going to go through each segment individually and give my overall thoughts. This is going to be as spoiler free as I can make it. I don't want to ruin one second of this film for anyone.

Tape 49:

Directed By: Simon Barrett

The only major flaw I found with the original was the framing story. It seemed lifeless and extremely boring. Tape 49 is no homerun but I feel it is a decent improvement over the original's story. It gives a better reason for the characters to be in the house and searching through the tapes. We are also shown a bit of the mythology behind the V/H/S concept. This is something I'd love to see expanded in the future if the series continues. I loved the ending of the frame story also. Creepy!

Rating: Solid Fist Bump.

Clinical Trials:

Directed By: Adam Wingard

DO you like ghost stories? Then you should enjoy this one! It's a great way to kick off the film proper. It may not be the most extreme or terrifying of the bunch, but I really enjoyed Clinical Trials. It was simple in its execution but sometimes simple is the best way to go. It's straight forward and I loved every minute of it. There are some pretty good horror moments in this one. I view it as the appetizer before the main course. I've always loved old-fashioned ghost stories. Clinical Trials is a ghost story for the modern age. I wasn't even thrown off by Wingard putting himself in the story. He did a very believable job of portraying the main character faced with these terrors.

Rating: Virtual High Five!

A Ride In The Park:

Directed By: Eduardo Sánchez and Gregg Hale

One of the men behind the found footage classic, The Blair Witch Project, brings us his take on zombies! If you are like me, your a little bit sick of zombies. I mean they are everywhere! I enjoy a well-done zombie film, but let's be honest, most are decent at best. I was pleasantly surprised by A Walk In The Park. It took the old zombie cliché and gave it a nice shot in the arm. This short made zombies fun again for me. It's a great mix of zombie action with just a bit of emotion thrown in to round it out. Going back to my food analogy, this is the soup or salad of the meal. Very tasty!

Safe Haven:

Directed By: Gareth Huw Evans

and Timo Tjahjanto

This is the hardest story to discuss without giving something away. If you hate found footage films and never want to see this, I only have one thing to tell you. Watch this segment! Safe Haven is an amazing piece of horror! All I'll say is it is a cult story. The greatest horror story involving a cult that I have ever seen put to film. I even had to track down subtitles, because the segment is partially in Indonesian! That wouldn't stop me from enjoying this segment of the film. So far, I loved every segment but wasn't ever really scared. I'll admit it: This one freaked me out! I never want to travel to Indonesia or get mixed up in a cult! So much mayhem and violence takes place in this segment, it could fill the quota for a whole movie! I'm not familiar with Timo Tjahjanto's work but I'll be checking out anything he does in the future. As for Gareth Huw Evans, I became a fan after watching The Raid. I anxiously await The Raid 2. Safe Haven mixes found footage and horror in a brilliant way. Like I said before, you owe it to yourself as a horror fan to watch this segment.

Alien Abduction Slumber Party:

Directed By: Jason Eisner

I've always been unnerved by the idea of an alien invasion or abduction. The idea that creatures from another world could invade and destroy us has haunted me for years. This story does a good job of showing what would happen if such an invasion took place. Most of the time, aliens invasions are shown from the perspective of soldiers. Men and women who are our last hope against this threat. What happens to the normal folks? The everyday citizens who are faced with an otherworldly threat? This story shows us the threat from the eyes of children and teenagers. I think this was a great spin on the alien idea. Plus there's a dog in the story! Sorry that's the animal lover in me coming out. Alien Slumber Party Abduction is genuinely suspenseful and a great way to end the film!

Rating: Virtual High Five!

Final Thoughts: As I said, my expectations for this movie were very high. It is very rare where ones expectations are fully met. With V/H/S2, I can truly say mine were exceeded! This is a fantastic film and most likely will be battling for my favorite horror film of 2013. All the stories were very good and bring something unique to the table. The film never drags or is dull. V/H/S2 is a winner! I hope the series continues because I'd love to see what a new set of directors can come up with. Although after this one, I don't even want to think about my expectations! If you are a horror fan, see this movie. I cannot recommend it any higher. Even if you don't like found footage, give it a chance. This movie doesn't have the usual "Why didn't they just drop the camera?!?!?", moment that so many others do. Is V/H/S2 better than the original? I will say it's an equal in every way. Make a night of it and watch both! V/H/S2 is a wonderful companion piece to the original.

The Book WHEREWOLVES was written as a screenplay by John Vamvas and Olga Montes but was then turned into a novel to get the story to readers while the screenwriters wait for the story to hit the screens. It's available on Amazon in both Kindle and paperback. I started reading this story at around 1pm and was finished in the evening. It kept me engaged and interested the whole way through and i love the twist at the end.

We are off to explore the Angry Red Planet this week, where we encounter bizarre and deadly creatures, but as we escape the deadly planet, Mars Attacks! So grab your helmets and charge up those ray guns and lets do this!

Jesse didn't watch anything this weekend, and was infuriated by the latest Sookie novel. Iris watched Wings (1927), There's a Girl in my Soup and BBC Series London Hospital. Kelly marathoned thru Hemlock Grove and falls asleep to Duck Dynasty.
