Movie Prop Collectors was at C2E2 recently and had the pleasure to speak with famed actor (as well as writer, director, and producer) Sean Astin.

Sean of course has starred in quite a few memorable films such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Goonies, Rudy, Bulworth, Toy Soldiers, Click, Masters of Science Fiction, Monk, 24, the list goes on. Sean volunteers much of his free time to helping others with various civic groups including The National Center for Family Literacy,  The Creative Coalition, Peace First, and many others. He also served the Secretary of the Army as a Civilian Aide (Southern California) from 1995-2005.

While Sean was quite busy at C2E2 signing autographs and meeting fans,  he managed to take a few moments with Movie Prop Collectors to share a sneak peak about his upcoming appearance on the Sy Fy show, Hollywood Treasure premiering May 22nd at 10/9c on the SyFy channel.

The Captain America Auction and display at C2E2 this past weekend was a tremendous success for convention attendees, fans of Captain America and Marvel, and Movie Prop Collectors alike.

The biggest news of the auction was the selling price of Lot#154: The Captain America Complete Hero Suit. The suit had an auction estimate of $20,000-$30,000 dollars and the costume sold to a live auction floor bidder for an astounding $233,700, with bp included.

I am getting ready to catch my flight to NY and wanted to quickly put up the auction total for the Profiles in History Marvel Captain America Auction.

The auction was obviously a huge success with auction numbers that generated many oohs and ahhhs from auction attendees as bids came in from both live auction attendees and internet and phone bidders.

219 lots sold with only 2 lots passed. Auction total was an impressive $1.1 million dollars with 20% bp. Many of the lots sold for well over the auction estimates and quite a few lots went to live auction floor bidders.

The auction room was almost filled at the start of the auction and at the conclusion, die hard fans and bidders gave a round of applause as the auction concluded.

*My flight was delayed 2 hours from Chicago due to a storm.

Day 2 at C2E2:

Here is a quick update for Day 2 at C2E2. I am going to the Profiles in History Marvel Captain America Auction being held at 6:00 pm, so this update will be brief. Convention attendees turned out in records numbers for the con and there were thousands of Captain America, Marvel, Anime, and Comic fans.

The internet in the hotel is horribly slow, so I will be adding more photos after the Captain America Auction for this update.

Movie Prop Collectors is at C2E2 now and the crowds for the first day are huge.

Press and Professionals were allowed in at 10:am and the general public at 1:pm.

While at the Profiles display, booth #609, I had the pleasure of meeting actor, writer, director, and producer, Sean Astin. Sean stopped by the amazing Profiles in History booth to check out the cool props, costumes, and vehicles, from the Captain America: The First Avenger Auction. Sean took a few moments to do a quick interview with Movie Prop Collectors and the video is being processed as this preview of the auction items and C2E2 is being published.

Sean will be at the convention all weeked signing for fans and posing for photos. The line for autographs for Sean started to get pretty long when the doors opened and Sean took time with each fan that came to visit him. You can see Sean at autograph line #1 in the autograph area.

The Profiles in History Captain America display was so big that it took over 2 booths to contain everything. They are located at the very front of the convention floor right next to Marvel Entertainment.

 There were thousands of fans both checking out the auction items and signing up for a chance to win an orginal production made Captain America Comic book, in a specailly created display. Those fans unable to attend C2E2 can enter on Profiles Facebook page.

The line up for next weeks Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) in Chicago looks pretty cool.

In addition to the anticipated Marvel Captain America: The First Avenger Auction presented by auction house, Profiles in History, the con will be offering some amazing guests, panels, and surprises.

The convention starts Friday, April 13th and runs thru, Sunday, April 15th. The full 3 day schedule can be found here.

The impressive guest list includes many actors, actresses, directors, writers, and producers including, actor, director, writer, and producer, Sean Astin, writer, Anne Rice, writer, Charlaine Harris, Star Wars C-3PO himself, actor, Anthony Daniels, Artist, Neal Adams, actor, producer, and writer, John Cusak, actor, producer, and soon to be director, Val Kilmer, Marvel Chief Creative Officer, Joe Quesada, and many others from the comic and entertainment field.

Julien’s Auctions held their two day Hollywood Legends Auction yesterday and today April 1st. The auction consisted of various items from various Hollywood films, television shows, and personal celebrity items.

The two day, 980 lot auction totaled $2,637,805.80 with varying buyers premiums ranging from 20% for lots costing $50,000 and above, 25% for lots 0-$49,999 and 28% for lots bid online. Of the 980 lots offered, 24 were passed, with a total of 956 lots sold.

Auction items included 83 lots from the television show, “Eureka”, replica props and statutes, original props and costumes, and personal belongings of celebrities. Including personal items of the late “Golden Girls” actress, Rue McClanahan. In 2011, Hutter Auction Galleries in New York, sold the first round of items from Miss McClanahan’s life.

Auction house, Profiles in History, has just announced in a press release this morning that they will be giving two lucky people, a production made prop from Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger .

The items are two original prop Captain America Comics #1 made for the film. One at the C2E2 convention, and the other via Facebook for those not attending C2E2 or the auction. Everyone has a chance to win.

LOS ANGELES- April 2, 2012 – Profiles in History, run by Joe Maddalena, will be holding two separate raffles to give away two original prop Captain America Comics #1 made for the film production of Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The First Avenger. Each prop comic book has been certified and given a 9.4 grade by the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC). The comic book is pictured left. CGC is the first and most trusted independent, impartial, third-party grading service for collectible comic books.

One prop comic book will be raffled off at the Chicago Entertainment and Comic Expo (C2E2). For those not attending C2E2, Profiles will raffle off the other prop comic book via Facebook. Winners will be announced on April 14, at 5:30pm CDT, just before the Captain America: The First Avenger auction at 6pm CDT. Details for both contests are below.

The hero Captain America shield encased in “ice” resin, pictured below, will be part of the auction. The first time we ever see Captain America’s ultimate hero shield is in the opening scene of the film where an expedition of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in the Arctic investigates the wreckage of the Suborbital Bomber. Entering the hull of the frozen ship, the explorers discover the iconic red, white and blue shield frozen solid in a block of ice. This prop is composed of a distressed, metallic Captain America shield suspended in a solid block of clear resin, a one-of-a-kind, significant piece. It is expected to fetch $4,000 – $6,000.

At C2E2, fans will be able to pick up a raffle ticket at the Profiles in History booth (#609) starting Friday, April 13, 2012 at 10:00am. It is a one entry per person limit. Profiles will announce the winner on April 14 by random drawing at approximately 5:30pm CDT, just before the Captain America: The First Avenger Auction at 6pm in room S404abc at McCormick Place 2301 S. Lake Shore Dr., Chicago, IL 60616 .

Fans can enter the online raffle by visiting Profiles in History’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/ProfilesInHistory), click on the “contest” tab and follow the on-screen instructions to fully complete and submit the entry form (a valid email address will be required). The winner of the online raffle will be selected by random drawing from all eligible entries on April 14, 2012. Auction house, Nate D. Sanders Auctions sent me a press release today for their March 28th Pop Culture Auction.

Items being auctioned include what is described in the press release as, the first Oscar© for Best Original Score to Con Conrad for the song,“The Continental” featured in the 1934 film, “The Gay Divorcee“*1, a typewriter owned by Orson Wells in the 1930′s and 40′s, Steve McQueen’s 1970 passport, and other pop memorabilia related items. Lot #2 above,  the “1934 Oscar©”, has been removed from the auction listing. I am awaiting a reply from Nate D. Sanders Auctions as to why.

POP CULTURE COLLECTION TO BE AUCTIONED MARCH 28, 2012

THE FIRST “BEST ORIGINAL SONG” OSCAR, ORSON WELLES’ PERSONAL TYPEWRITER AND STEVE MCQUEEN’S PASSPORT AMONG ITEMS

March 26, 2012 – LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Orson Welles’ personal typewriter that he owned while co-authoring Citizen Kane, the first Best Original Song Academy Award Oscar and Steve McQueen’s passport highlight a remarkable collection of Hollywood memorabilia to be auctioned off by Nate D. Sanders on March 28.

The first Oscar awarded for Best Original Song (Est $100,000-$150,000) went to Con Conrad for The Continental in The Gay Divorcee in 1934. The Gay Divorcee launched Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire into stardom, and was their first picture to win an Academy Award. Also nominated for Best Picture, it was the pair’s second film together.

Orson Welles used this signed Underwood Standard Portable Typewriter (Est $10,000-$15,000) during the 1930’s and 1940’s at the peak of his career

In 1941, Welles won a Best Screenplay Oscar for his debut film Citizen Kane, named by the American Film Institute in 2007 as the greatest film of the past 100 years. Welles went on to write the screenplays for classic films such as the Magnificent Ambersons and The Lady from Shanghai.

Welles signed the typewriter with a marker, highlighting a 12-piece lot of memorabilia originally obtained from the Orson Welles estate. Nate D. Sanders is also offering Welles’ famous smoking pipe set and other pieces of his personal collection, originally obtained from his estate.

Nate D. Sanders auctioned off over $3 million worth of Oscars last month and sold Orson Welles’ Academy Award in December for $861,000.

Steve McQueen’s 1970 American passport (Est. $30,000-$50,000) displays the Hollywood rebel’s satirical sense of humor. The media often erroneously listed

McQueen’s name of Steven Terrance McQueen as Terrance Stephen McQueen.

While in London, McQueen’s passport expired and he was forced to apply for a re-issued one at the American embassy. McQueen decided to apply as Terrance Stephen McQueen to see if the U.S. Department of State would approve it, which it did.
