Google Translate has been a free, very useful tool for quite some time now. It’s not always perfect, but Google just made it MUCH BETTER for Google and Android phones. Literally, instead of having to type in a phrase to be converted, you simply speak what you want to be translated into the phone and Google’s phone responds in an audible translation (or vice versa)! It can also listen to others’ voices and translate them for you!

SXSW starts today (Friday, March 12) and one of the predominant themes will be GeoLocation – expect to hear more about this in 2010 with smart phones, the iPad, netbooks and every mobile gadget. So what’s the news? Twitter and Facebook are both adopting geolocation into your status updates and tweets and it has some controversy around privacy issues (do you want people knowing your coordinates while you tweet or do you find this a cool new feature). Apple is making major news, not about the iPad, but about claiming they own 20 patents to the most popular smart phone technology and now they’ve sued HTC (maker of Google’s Nexus One) for “stealing their patents.” HTC makes android phones and Apple is finally using the first punch in what could be a major blow up between Apple vs Google. Once best friends, now new enemies?

Apple finally announced today that the iPad Wi-Fi version will finally be available to buy and pick up on Saturday, April 3rd at an Apple store or AT&T store. The Wi-Fi/3G models will be available sometime in late April. That said, a  week from today, March 12th, you can pre-order at www.apple.com for either the WiFi or WiFi/3G models as well.

“Beginning a week from today, on March 12, US customers can pre-order both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple’s online store (www.apple.com) or reserve a Wi-Fi model to pick up on Saturday, April 3, at an Apple retail store,” states Apple.

As we’ve covered in several Moxie Mo Show episodes, the iPad will be a revolutionary device that will fit the niche market between an iPhone and a full laptop.

The question remains if the iPad will be as revolutionary as the iPhone in 2007, as many experts believe it lacks too much for it to be such a huge “phenonemon.”

Conde Nast reports they’ve made an agreement with Apple’s iPad bringing some of their most popular magazines in an iPad-embedded fashion – interactive media, fully colored and overall enriched experience as you read your favorite digital copy on the latest eReader that most think will kill the Kindle. That said, Apple Insider reports the iPad has a major bottleneck in production and we may not see the iPad for a few more months. Details inside.

Also, Google buys the very popular Picnik – the online photo editing tool that allows users to upload photos and add different filters, cropping, etc and then share them all over the social realm. Why is this even a story? Well there’s some controversy. Yahoo uses Picnik as their default photo editor when people upload photos to Yahoo’s Flickr which might make Yahoo wanting a non-Google owned service. We’ll give you the latest scoop.

Last but not least, Palm Pre and Palm Pixi users will rejoice once they receive a brand new upgrade from Palm which should hit your phones within a few days. This update, webOS 1.4 has a lot of things you’re going to love, just one of them turning your camera into a full fledge video and editor. Very nice!

We’ve talked about it on episodes 124 and 125 about why you do not have to worry that the Apple iPad isn’t going to have Flash. We broke a record today – it’s 12:45am and within the last 23 hours, Dallas metro has received over 10 inches of snow and it has not stopped snowing since 3:45am last night. Literally. It’s insane!

That said, we have a lot of hot moxie news you need to know about: Google launches Google Buzz which is their “Twitter” embedded into their email (Gmail) and it’s taken off big time. Also, Google is asking communities across the nation to apply to win free 1 gig fiber broadband (which is 100 times faster than what you or I have) in over 50 to 500 different cities. Also, a company in Japan has now created an iPhone app that allows your dog to tweet on Twitter – by his or her bark. You have to see this to believe it. Pretty insane!

Last but not least, Hulu may be getting on the iPad thanks to a deal that’s being worked out between the flash site of Hulu and the non-flash iPad. Details inside the show!

We’ve heard a ton about today’s event: Apple launches their iPad tablet device. There was so much buzz around this that it reminded me of the iPhone launch in 2007. Twitter saw a spike in tweets today that they’ve never seen in the history of Twitter and it’s for a reason. That said, there are a lot of FALSE RUMORS about this device so it’s time to set it straight.

We’re going to give you a brief overview of the iPad – I’m sure by now, you think you already know it with all the blogs, articles and other podcasts. But did you know, cameras can be attached to it? Did you know that Adobe is going to have Flash capabilities on the iPad? And lastly, many are upset it didn’t come with a webcam and it doesn’t multi-task… but we’ll show why there’s proof things are changing and how they will make the iPad much better.

Also, for those of you still on the fence – there’s reason to think “do I need this?” I’ll show you why this will not only kill the Kindle, but it will be Apple’s next biggest thing. Truly.

So Apple finally did it. They announced their tablet, the iPad, that we’ve been covering for weeks, if not a month or two. It’s everything I was hoping it to be, although there are some things I am VERY disappointed about. Am I am Mac fan? Absolutely. Am I happy with this new device? Yes! Am I disappointed there’s no webcam, camera or multitasking? Absolutely! Some of you aren’t as impressed, and that’s absolutely “a-OK.”

For one, why is their a need for the iPad? According to Steve Jobs, it’s the middle “missing piece” for the iPhone and the Mac. It’s a portable Mac, more powerful than the iPhone and is also something that will kill the Kindle and yet, it’s so much more. You can’t carry a 1/2″ thick, 10″ screen “Macbook” around you that is also as gorgeous as the iPhone is with your photos, videos, movies, TV, documents, email, calendar and now BOOKS! Thus, the need for an iPad.

For over an hour, I followed Engadget’s wonderful step by step coverage of the live event as well as Cali Lewis’ livestream.

Here’s how to sum up the iPad so you know if this is truly what you want (as I know I’m getting one!):

(1) It has everything the iPhone has but more: a bigger, new state-of-the-art backlit LED screen that measures 10″ diagonally, giving you much more screen real estate, WAY more memory, a much faster processor, bigger storage, and like the iPhone will seamlessly incorporate your apps, videos, YouTube HD videos, photos, notes and calendar into a new iTunes that’s literally built into the device. 3rd party apps have already been made for the iPad as well:

The iPad will sync with your iTunes, which the big news on this is iTunes now has a Book Store – which will absolutely compete with Amazon’s pricey and “boring” Kindle. Books will now be sold on iTunes within the iPad and the experience of reading books, newspapers and magazines is truly magical: you have to see it to understand it, but it’s totally worth it and will change the way we read online media.

Everything is meant to work together: your phone (iPhone), your iPad, your Macbook/Mac and even your Apple TV: everything will work on the iPad and works seamlessly.

So why is more than just an iPhone or a Macbook?

The iPad has Safari, Mail, iCalendar, Photos (which looks amazing on this device), Videos, YouTube in HD, it’s also an iPod (much better than your iPod Touch), it has apps, games, 3rd Party apps and even iWorks (which could only be run on a Macbook/Mac)! It comes with Maps (much higher-resolution, GPS, phenomenal interactive new Maps application), Notes, Contacts, and works on the iPhone OS. It’s only a 1/2 inch thick and has an amazingly beautiful design with better, more advanced multi-touch capabilities:

It has 10 hours of battery life plus has built in Wi-Fi for easy access to the internet. The biggest surprise of today’s event was Apple proved all the pundits wrong. It doesn’t cost $1,000 like everyone said it would. The wi-fi iPad will cost you $499 (16GB), $599 (32GB), $699 (64GB). That said, they’re also selling a 3G/WiFi version as well, so mobility is the key to this – yes, they stayed with AT&T but I’m okay with that – why? Because you can buy AND cancel 3G at ANY TIME (aka NO CONTRACT) and unlimited data plans are only $29.99. I was very impressed with that. You can also purchase the iPad with 3G UNLOCKED (so if you’re a Sprint user, you can use it!)

The best way to see this is the Apple iPad video that will be on TV soon. It will ship in 3 to 6 months so order now. For more information (see specs here), wait until our episode comes out tonight showing all the stuff that’s not covered here!

Engadget and Apple are releasing new photos of this beautiful multimedia device – that IS more powerful and better than an iPhone and is much more portable and easier to handle and carry than a Macbook. It is the perfect “middle” piece for Apple with 3 major flaws: no webcam, no multitasking and no SMS app.

It’s only a few days until Apple’s Big Event, “Come see our latest creation,” and everyone’s a buzz about the Apple tablet. We aren’t even 100% sure there will even be such a device, but several reputable and reliable sources are putting their integrity on the line with more details about the tablet. We show you the latest and greatest and what you can really expect if Apple does indeed launch this new device. From all accounts, this will be another huge game changer, just like when the iPhone was introduced to the world in 2007. This device will be your phone, your internet, your eReader, your video conferencing unit, your TV, your video cam and even your iPod.

Besides all the buzz on Apple, YouTube has made a lot of buzz with their more simple and more clean redesign. Gone are the “rating stars” and the horrible clutter around videos and now we have a sleeker design, easier navigation several new features that we will discuss. Also, making big news is YouTube’s entry into the streaming rental movie business – just wait until you hear what they’ve started!

Last but not least, Twitter had it’s very first special tweet, which is out of this world, literally… and Twitter is asking each Twitter user for their location… Why? CES 2010 in Las Vegas in winding down today and boy do we have a lot to cover. For epsiode 120, I’ve decided to show you the biggest buzz on products that you may have seen and may have not seen. Wednesday night, as you know, I was the guest on Geekbrief’s livestream coverage of CES 2010 and the Microsoft Keynote – sadly, nothing worth reporting about the keynote, but Cali Lewis and I had a fantastic discussion with over 21,000 people who joined us during the livestream about several products and gadget news from CES, including 3D technology and 3D HDTVs. I’ll show you what announcements have been made, including two major networks who have already promised 3D programming by late summer of THIS year. Also, Google announced their “iPhone competitor” made by HTC and it’s called the Nexus One. I’m sure you’ve already heard about it, but it’s worth showing you why this phone is getting so much buzz. One feature: voice to text in any and EVERY application on the Nexus One. Whatever you say, the Nexus One will type from your voice.

Last but certainly not least, the invasion of e-Readers were the biggest talked about topic at this year’s CES 2010. Hundreds, literally, of eReaders were announced by several new companies. So we were expecting a big tablet as the major news from this chaotic event… rather we got what they called the HP Slate (will this compete with Apple’s tablet… not so much). Seems “cute” but I think Apple will blow them away, personally.

They also spoke of the Zune HD as well as Windows 7…. but these are all things we know of.

Project Natal finally got a good explanation and demonstration for the Xbox 360. Other than that, not impressed…

The biggest news story of the week is Apple. According to several reports and “official sources,” Apple is planning a major event and announcement on January 26th, 2010 in San Francisco. There is so much hype about this event that people believe it could be a piece of technology that has never been seen – so could it be the tablet that has infected the rumor mill all of this year? Signs point to yes, but if you know anything about Apple, you know they always have something up ther sleeve.

Christmas is only 5 days away yet you may not have seen Apple’s new commercial promoting their “12 Apps of Christmas” for the iPhone or iPod Touch. My most favorite of these apps is the last one, which allows you to control the Christmas tree lights from your iPhone! It’s truly an amazing app and we have all the details in the show.

As many of you know, this early afternoon, news broke on Twitter regarding Brittany Murphy’s death. She was only 32 and many of her fans are absolutely shocked. That said, why did Twitter play such an important role? We show you why Twitter remains the #1 news breaking source as well as how Google’s real-time search results helped spread the news of this sad tragedy. Speaking of Twitter, though, they were hacked on Friday night by the Iranian Cyber Army for 2 hours – we will tell you why they did it and how they did it.

The iPhone 3G and 2G finally has a legit iPhone app in the App Store that allows you to record video! Also, Microsoft’s very popular search engine, Bing.com, has branched out and created their very own iPhone Bing App. It has voice activated commands for BROWSING the internet, voice commands for interactive maps and several other features (image search, etc) that Google’s iPhone App does not have. It’s a free download in the App Store.

In other tech news, McDonald’s announces they will no longer charge for WiFi access in their restaurants so that the “Starbucks coffee crowd” will go to McD’s and surf the web while sipping on McCafe’s rather than spend more money at Starbucks. Do you think this move will help McD’s or will it still just be a fast food restaurant with free WiFi?

Last but not least, the entire country of Norway thought they may be under attack Tuesday night… by a UFO or some type of apocalyptic doom. Photos and video flooded Norway’s TV stations and 911 centers due to an unbelievable spiral in the sky – you’ll have to see this to believe it. And we found out what it was… very odd indeed.

The biggest news to hit the tech world this week (thus far) belongs to Apple. Reports claim that Apple has been in talks with all the major TV networks (channels) for their very own TV subscription service via iTunes. It’s a big day in tech news – typical Tuesday, right? Apple released a whole bunch of new products from remote controls to new iMacs to new Macbooks and to a never-seen-before Magical Mouse and we have all the scoop. Mac lovers will be salivating, especially at the Macbook’s new price and sleek design.

Twitter and Facebook have the potential to really break a news story even before CNN, MSNBC or even Reuters. The problem, as we’ve discussed, is when idiots or accidents happen causing rumors to spread like wildfire, such as what happened with actor Zach Braff (on Scrubs) and his supposed “suicide.” Thanks to a prankster who posted a link on Twitter, thousands if not millions of people began to spread the demise of Zach Braff all over the web. Here’s how Zach addressed the rumors – by another popular social networking site, YouTube.

Last but not least, poor Sidekick owners (including Paris Hilton and Perez Hilton – sigh!). T-Mobile’s servers, which are hosted on Microsoft’s servers, were not backed up properly when they did an upgrade to the Sidekick service prompting every single user to lose his/her photos, contacts, calendars and other personal information that was stored in their “cloud server” (like the iPhone, all this info can be ’synced’ to a cloud computer – aka a server – elsewhere) and unfortunately, T-Mobile is telling Sidekick users “SORRY!” Doubt that’s going to help much! Ouch!

In tech news, the war of words began this morning when a blogger from ZDNet.com (owned by CNET and CBS) claimed they’ve uncovered Yahoo.com’s deepest and darkest secrets. An inside source (in Iran) of the blogger claimed he had proof that Yahoo sold over 200,000 Iranian accounts to the Iran government during the fighting and botched elections which sparked massive protests, unfair jailing and torturing as well as death. ZDnet’s blogger claimed he knew that if all pans out, this would be the damning news that would literally put Yahoo out of business since this would most definitely be considered a major human rights violation. That said, within a few hours of the blog post (spread all over the web by Twitter and Facebook), the story was retracted by ZDNet’s Editor in Chief due to Yahoo’s pressure stating they undeniably claim this rumor is absurd and false… and oh yeah, the blogger didn’t even call Yahoo for investigation or comments and his 1 source, well lets just say he must not have been too trustworthy. A huge ouch to ZDNet, CNET and CBS.

Paranormal Activity, the low budget movie that has received more buzz than any scary movie since Blair Witch Project, is trying to get Twitter and Facebook friends to visit their site to demand that they get the film into national release. Currently, it’s only playing in select cities, but if the producers get 1 million clicks, then they will release this unbelievably scary movie to the public all over the nation. Check out this trailer – and hold on to your seat!

Last but not least, Vimeo announced they are launching a Desktop App that will allow all Vimeo users to directly upload multiple HD files from their desktop directly to their Vimeo account. Within minutes, you can have 5 HD movies up and running and waiting to be viewed, shared or even embedded – we have all the details and when the app will be released.

Microsoft’s Hotmail got hacked by an anonymous hacker this past week and Microsoft just issued/confirmed a statement today – over 10,000 users’ passwords have been stolen, some published all over the world. Here’s what you need to do if you use hotmail as an email client.

Also, in tech news, Adobe announced the very hyped Flash 10: the most advanced, up-to-date desktop and smartphone software that allows full HD viewing and will run smoothly on most of the smart phones we have…. all except, you got it! The iPhone. There’s a catch, though: Apple refuses to let iPhone users browse with flash but has agreed to allow Flash 10 in a way that only Apple would allow…watch to find out!

Researchers at GA Tech have done something so unbelievable to Google Earth that it literally takes it out of this world. They’ve learned “augmented 3D reality” and incorporated it directly within the Google Earth application. Instead of seeing a city’s satellite static pictures, you can now see REAL TIME, REAL PEOPLE, REAL WEATHER in a REAL area in Google Maps. Researchers are even working on real weather conditions on any given location within Google Earth. The video I have to show you is only just the beginning.
