You Can Play a Game Inside a New York Times Article

If you haven’t seen this New York Times article, well, you should! It’s titled Just One More Game… Angry Birds, Farmville and Other Hyperaddictive ‘Stupid Games’, and the cool thing is that it actually has a mini-game inside the article.
Not an insulated mini-game inside a frame, it’s one that uses the whole page and you can actually blow stuff from the layout. It’s a very interesting and innovative experience, so go check it out if you haven’t already.
Apparently that game is not new, though, and it’s called Kick Ass. If I am not wrong it’s using JavaScript to do all that, but the creators sure thought out of the box!
The NY Times article is about those simple games and how they affect our lives. Here’s a quote:

And so a tradition was born: a tradition I am going to call (half descriptively, half out of revenge for all the hours I’ve lost to them) “stupid games.” In the nearly 30 years since Tetris’s invention — and especially over the last five, with the rise of smartphones — Tetris and its offspring (Angry Birds, Bejeweled, Fruit Ninja, etc.) have colonized our pockets and our brains and shifted the entire economic model of the video-game industry. Today we are living, for better and worse, in a world of stupid games.

If you are still reading this, well, I am guessing you are one of the last ones. The others are probably blowing everything up on the NY Times page…

7 Lessons I learned from Increasing My Search Engine Traffic by 200% in 6 Months

I’m a huge fan of organic traffic (which is pretty much Google these days…), because it is one of the best sources of traffic to a website that can be consistent without you actually having to keep doing the same thing over and over again.
One thing, though, is that I hate complicated aspects of SEO; I want to keep things as simple as possible, and I’m not interested in cramming all SEO slogans that exist.
Last year, I decided to do something that changed how I viewed SEO completely; I spent a whole week writing 31 guest posts that were submitted to smaller blogs, and I focused on a few selected pages on my blog. The result just 6 months after has been stunning; I was able to increase my traffic by around 200% in 6 months.
Now, when I say that I increased my traffic by 200% in 6 months, I’m not just referring to a short increase in visitors. I’m talking about growing from 35,000 visitors 6 months before the challenge, to 94,000+ visitors just 6 months after. That’s a huge increase of over 60,000 visitors in 6 months, for just one week of work.

The main point of this article, however, is to share the major lessons I learned during the process. Some of these lessons are stunning, and they will probably debunk major SEO myths you’re already familiar with.
While the increase in data is subjective, I’m pretty sure the challenge contributed significantly to the traffic increase; I didn’t do anything after the challenge to help my SEO, and I noticed an increase of 100+ visitors a day just 10 days after the challenge.
Below are some of the major lessons I learned from increasing my SEO traffic by 200% in 6 months.

1. Guest Blogging Still Works

Guest blogging is currently the most trending marketing tactic online today, and it is completely overhyped if you don’t know how to use it to your advantage.
The thing about writing guest posts for big blogs is that you get a few hundred visitors the week the guest post goes live, and the traffic dies down gradually over the week. Nowadays, guest blogging on a big blog might not even send you up to 100 visitors the same month it is published, due to the fact that almost every post on the blog is a guest post. However, when I calculated the amount of traffic I got per guest post in 6 months, each blog I wrote for sent an average of 1,900 visitors.
If you consider the fact that all the blogs I wrote for combined sent me less than 150 visitors directly when the guest post was published, and that you’ve probably never heard of any of them, I think that’s impressive.
The difference, however, is that the traffic isn’t directly from those blogs. It is from the increase in search engine traffic that they influenced.
Guest blogging still works, not by going about it the traditional way, but by developing a smart approach focused on helping you get the best return on investment. For me, the best way to get the best return on investment was to build backlinks, and it was a really smart decision indeed.
What more? Those 31 guest posts for smaller blogs you’ve probably never heard of outperformed every guest post I’ve ever written for a big blog; not because the blogs are better, but because I had a strategy toward the challenge. I’d have gotten better results from a big blog, if I had a strategy.
In other words, guest blogging still works, but only if you can develop a strategy.

2. You Can Create Link Relevancy

If you’ve followed the SEO world for any more than a few weeks now, you’d have heard several times over how important link relevancy is.
Basically, the idea is that you won’t get that much from a link if it isn’t from a relevant site in your niche. Actually, my challenge proved that wrong because none of the blogs I wrote a guest post for was relevant to my niche. I’m in the writing/freelancing niche, and the blogs I submitted a post to were in the tech niche, the blogging niche, and the make money blogging niche.
One thing was different, though. That one thing was that my content was relevant to my link.
Notice the two things; the blogs were totally irrelevant, but my content was.
You might be wondering how this is possible, but it’s all about bridging the topic between your blog and the host blog. If you’re writing for a “tech blog” and own a “blogging tips” blog, your article can be about the Top Apps Every Blogger Should Install. By taking a look at that title you will notice you appeal both to your audience, and the audience of the host blogger.

3. Don’t Just Link to the Homepage

One other thing I did during the challenge was to link to the homepage than other pages. While the keyword I’m trying to rank for is quite competitive, I’m only ranking on page 3 of it 6 months after getting a significant number of backlinks. Other pages, however, are ranking better and getting good traffic.
The other difference is that traffic to my homepage rarely converts, while traffic to the other pages lead to more traffic to my blog and converts better.
Most people make the mistake of only linking to their homepage in their SEO campaigns, and this is actually dangerous than it appears. No, it won’t get you blacklisted, but you won’t be able to get as much results as directing your traffic to a specific page with a call to action.
Focus on building links to inner pages on your site, and let the links/traffic to the homepage come naturally via word of mouth marketing.

4. Use Natural But Descriptive Anchors on Your Links

The anchor text is the text that is used in the link. When you submit a guest post usually you can choose any anchor you want.
The first mistake you can make with the anchor text is to use a generic term like “click here” or “visit my website”. Those won’t help the visitors know what your site is about, and search engines won’t gain any insight from it either, which doesn’t help your SEO.
On the other end of the spectrum there’s another mistake, which is to use artificial and highly optimized anchors. This is bad because it might get the guest post rejected right away, and because it might flag your website for over-optimization with Google.
A better strategy is to use natural but descriptive anchors. Those will help your search rankings in a natural way, and they won’t create a risk of getting your website penalized. For instance, use “visit my Freelance Writing Blog” as anchor, but don’t use “find freelance jobs online”.

5. A Well-Planned Campaign Might be what you Need

Something worth noting is that before embarking on the challenge to write 31 guest posts in one week, I’ve literally written hundreds of guest posts that had little impact.
The difference between the hundreds of guest posts I wrote earlier is that they were scattered and without plan, but the 31 guest posts in a week was actually designed to help my SEO; I knew which keywords I wanted to rank for, I had them all planned ahead, I wrote all the guest posts in one week, and I submitted them on the same day.
In other words, I planned a campaign.
Sometimes, you might not have the time to go on such a campaign, but if hiring an expert is feasible, go for it!

6. Getting a Lot of Links at the Same Time Doesn’t Hurt

Now, I’m not talking about gaining a thousand backlinks at the same time.
If you read the 2^nd article I linked to as one of the resources in my first point above, you will understand what I mean. It is an article from Daniel about how he developed a guest blogging strategy to grow his blog to 50,000 subscribers as soon as possible; one major thing Daniel lays an emphasis on is the important of getting as much guest posts published with closer proximity to each other. That way, you will be able to hit the blogosphere with storm and get people to notice you.
The same thing applies to SEO, but at a much smaller scale depending on the authority of your site. Focus on getting a significant amount of articles submitted at the same time, and you will increase your chances of getting results for years to come. There are a lot of advantages to this, and one major one is that your articles won’t all be published at the same time; in other words, all the links won’t be available at the same time, but a significant number of links will be available at a point in time to get the search engines to notice you.
The good thing is, if you could get ranked for the keywords of your choice you will be able to get enough people to keep linking to your article naturally to keep the momentum going.

7. It Doesn’t End There

While having a solid SEO campaign can influence your results, it really doesn’t end there.
One other thing that influenced my campaign was updating my blog regularly. The regular content I published on my blog contributed to the increase in my traffic, but it wouldn’t be significant without the campaign. In the same vein, the traffic I got as a result of the campaign wouldn’t have been as significant if I didn’t have a blog.
If you’re a blogger, update your blog regularly. If you’re a company, start a blog, and hire a professional writer if possible.

Recent Update on Google’s Search Ranking Algorithm

Google rolls out updates to its search rankings algorithm pretty much daily, but those are very small changes that affect a tiny percentage of all search queries. Once a month or once every three months, on the other hand, they tend to roll up slightly bigger changes to the algorithm.
According to an article on Search Engine Land it looks like March was one of those months, and several changes were introduced in the algorithm. Here’s a quote:

There are two items on the list that make specific reference to how Google processes anchor text. Here they are, word-for-word from the announcement:
Tweaks to handling of anchor text. [launch codename "PC"] This month we turned off a classifier related to anchor text (the visible text appearing in links). Our experimental data suggested that other methods of anchor processing had greater success, so turning off this component made our scoring cleaner and more robust.
Better interpretation and use of anchor text. We’ve improved systems we use to interpret and use anchor text, and determine how relevant a given anchor might be for a given query and website.

The other changes were related to image searches, navigation queries and content freshness, which are all factors that affect pretty much all bloggers and site owners, so check out the full article and the comments as well.

It’s A WordPress World

If some years ago the battle for the leading CMS online was still open (we had WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, TypePad, MovableType, to name the main ones), today we have a clear winner. As you guessed, it’s WordPress.
The guys from Royal Pingdom did a small research and found out that almost 50% of the top 100 blogs in the world are using the platform. Three years ago this number was “just” 27%. You can read the full article here: WordPress completely dominates top 100 blogs.

The interesting thing is that even mainstream news organizations are using the platform. For instance, the Bits blog of the New York Times uses it, as does the CNN Political Ticker.
Obviously such popularity has drawbacks too. The main one is that WordPress is probably the most targeted platform of hacks and malware. That being said it has been a while since we saw a major breach on the code that enabled many sites to get attacked.
Overall I think the project is becoming mature, and I like the fact that they are not bloating it with too many unnecessary features as people tend to do with iterations of popular products.
In other words, I think the usage of WordPress as a CMS will only increase in the coming years, and I don’t seen any other platform threatening its position. Do you?

Try Something New with Your Content (And Watch Your Blog Grow)

Are you stuck in a rut with your content?
Perhaps you think that you’ve hit your stride. You can easily turn out a post that’ll go down well with your audience. You might have a good formula — like always writing list posts, or how to posts.
Maybe you think your audience like knowing what to expect. They want consistency: the same types and lengths of posts each time.
Today, I want to encourage you to branch out. Try something different, just for one post. You might be surprised at the response you get.
Pick one of these that’s different from your usual content:

A round-up post of great resources in your niche
A long, in-depth tutorial (if you’re not sure what that might look like, check out The Ultimate Guide to Building a Tribe on Twitter, by Sean Platt)
A short, inspirational post
A book or product review
A humorous post
A sales-y post for your products — you might want to run a special offer
A list post (even if you think they’re overrated)
A video post — this could be of you talking, or a screencast

… and I’m sure you can come up with more. (Feel free to add your ideas in the comments!)
Whenever I’ve taken the risk and published something that felt different from my usual content, I’ve had a great response from my readers. Sure, they like my regular posts — but they also enjoy an occasional change.
You might even find that your new post goes down so well, it nudges you in a whole new direction.

How The Letter “F” Can Make You A Better Blogger

How would you feel if you found out that most people on your blog aren’t reading your post at all? You have this well-thought, killer post which you think deserves recognition from the entire civilized world and yet… people don’t read it.
They SCAN it.
The problem is… a lot of people don’t know how to write for a blog. Just because you learned to write in school doesn’t make you a good blogger. Worse yet, usually it is the people who write like they did in school who make the worse bloggers.
Let’s talk for a minute about how readers interact with your site and how this affects the way you write for it.
A lot of user-interface studies have been done (heat maps, studying eye path, etc.) on how people interact with websites. One of the principles that has come out of all that is what is dubbed the “F-Pattern”.

Simply put, people’s eyes scan over your page in a pattern which is similar to the letter “F”. In other words, they scan horizontally across the top, then they scan down the left side. Usually in one or two places, they scan a little bit more toward the right. This is the F-pattern.
Knowing the F-pattern comes in very handy when it comes to how you write your content, how you place important visual elements on your site, or deciding where to place ads.
For example, Daniel has an ad right here on this article. That ad is placed top left. It falls RIGHT at the apex of the F-pattern. For that reason, that placement for a banner ad within content is usually one of the top-performing locations.
There are, however, plenty of other applications of this pattern. For instance:

Your headline is key. It is at the top and people will read that. So, make sure your headline knocks their socks off.
The first paragraph or so is the key. Again, it is at the top. This needs to knock it out of the park because this is what will often determine whether anybody actually reads what you wrote. Best bet is to use the top paragraph to introduce a “pattern interrupt”. An attention-grabbing statement that is designed to raise an eyebrow.
Sub-headlines are important. Make them enticing. The purpose of the sub-headline is to get people to read what’s right under it. And, those sub-headlines form the branches of the “F”.
Bullet points can also form branches to the “F”. As a person scans the left side of your post, the bullet points will stick out visually. Make those bullet points interesting.

Contrast this to a reader coming across a long-winded post with multiple paragraphs. Even worse, the paragraphs are justified left and right. Ugh. No wonder people won’t read that! They can’t scan it over and they’re too damn lazy.
Put the “F” to work on your site. You have to work WITH human nature rather than fight it. Most blog readers are riddled with ADD… so your content has to be structured to accommodate. It is just as important as what you say.

Don’t Let The Fear of Making Mistakes Paralyze You

How many people do you know who have many ideas regarding products, projects or business that they think could become really successful and profitable? I am guessing dozens, right?
How many people do you know, on the other hand, who actually took action to create those products, projects or businesses? I would guess one or two maybe?
This pattern is pretty much universal.
I am not sure about the exact ratio, but I think it would be fair to say that for every 100 people out there with good ideas there’s one or two willing to take action to implement them. In other words, for every 100 wannabe entrepreneurs there are 1 or 2 real ones.
What separates those two groups?
In my opinion the main factor is the fear of making mistakes and failing.
When you are brainstorming ideas inside your head and talking about them without friends and family you are in a comfort zone. There are no mistakes to be made there. Maybe your idea could fly, maybe not, but no one knows for sure. You can’t fail at that stage.
That’s why most people are willing and comfortable coming up with ideas.
When you decide to take action and implement an idea, however, you are making yourself susceptible to making mistakes. If you make too many of them there’s the risk that your project or business will completely fail.
That’s why very few people end up taking action.
One could argue that there are financial risks involved with pursuing those ideas, but is this the case?
With advances in technology you can get a business running today with less than $1000, and as long as you don’t borrow money the worst that can happen is that you will lose some of your time. And even then it won’t be a complete loss, because you’ll learn a lot of useful stuff along the way.
As you can see the key factor here is your mind. It’s the fear of making mistakes and failing that actually stops you, not the real financial risks.
How to overcome it? You got figure what’s more important to you: achieving your goals and your dreams or playing it safe and staying in your comfort zone.
As Earl Nightingale once said: We are all self-made, but only the successful will admit it.

5 Ways to Grow Your Email List

If you don’t have an email list yet make sure to check my Email Marketing Basics post. It has all the information you need to get started. If you already have one but are trying to grow it, below you’ll find 5 methods you can use.
1. Offer a freebie
By far the best way to get people joining your email list is to offer them something in return. The most common freebie around the web is an ebook, but you could also come up with audio files (e.g., interviews), templates (e.g., a WordPress theme), or even a free course that will be delivered via follow-up messages on the newsletter itself.
Obviously once you have the freebie ready to go you should promote it to make sure people are aware of it.
2. Create a detailed landing page
A couple of days ago I saw a post on John Chow’s blog titled How to Quadruple Your Email Opt In Rate. The post highlights how the guys from Aweber performed a make-over on their landing page, basically adding more information to encourage people to subscribe. The result? A boost of 321% in the number of sign-ups.
Once you have your landing page up and running and you can traffic to it from a wide range of sources, including social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, as well as guest posts.
3. Host a contest
First of all you need to figure out a prize. It could be an advertising spot on your site, a review, a digital product or even a physical one (e.g., an iPod). Once you have it announce the contest on your blog, and explain that in order to participate on the random draw for the prize your readers simply need to join your email newsletter.
4. Get affiliates to promote your list
Most email marketing services allow you to track the sources of new subscribers. By using this feature you could recruit friends and affiliates who would be willing to promote your email list in exchange for prizes or money. I have seen people offering a certain amount per subscriber (e.g., $0.10) or larger prizes for the top performing affiliates, and both methods worked pretty well.
5. Cross promote with another newsletter
A very cost effective way to grow the size of your email list is to find other bloggers/webmasters and propose a cross promotion deal. That is, you plug their lists for your subscribers and they will do the same with their subscribers. This won’t cost anything and both of you will end up with new subscribers.

12 Logic Fallacies That Can Kill Your Blog Traffic

When it comes to shrinking a blog audience, the ways to do it are aplenty. Not posting often enough. Phoning it in with dull verbiage. Writing way too much on something very few people care about (your parents don’t count).
But perhaps the most insidious traffic killers are logical fallacies: disingenuous, oversimpliﬁed, and often emotion-driven statements that do a terrible job defending a cause. Here’s a list of 12 logical fallacies so you can avoid them in future posts.
1. Rash Generalization – All women want to look hot, or all Frenchmen are rude. If you are stating a generalization that you are basing on evidence that is biased, insufficient, or outright illusory, you are damaging the value of your own post.
2. Either/Or – Stop global warming or we’ll all drown, or either the tax code is revised or America will go bankrupt. The fallacy of presenting only two diametrically opposed possibilities when there are endless alternatives and shades of gray to the issues being discussed will make your blog seem extremist and disconnected.
3. Non Sequitor – Mitt Romney is tall so he’ll make a great President, or the Greeks can’t solve their ﬁnancial problems because they drink too much Ouzo. If your conclusion does not logically follow on from the premise, you’re coming off as a total idiot to any perspicacious reader.
4. Ad Hominem Attack – David Letterman shouldn’t host his talk show because he had sex with staffers, or Bill Gates is an untrustworthy executive because he was arrested at 19. Ad hominem is a form of non sequitor with a vicious edge that attempts to correlate some personal trait with the capacity to perform a completely separate task, and thus has no place in any blog.
5. Red Herring – How can anyone vote for Obama after he said his son would look like Trayvon, or why bother with healthcare reform since doctors are crooks. You are distracting and misdirecting your reader by correlating the essence of your post with an issue that is irrelevant.
6. Circular Logic – Anyone can diet if they have the will power to eat less, or if piracy was not illegal then it wouldn’t be prohibited by law. The assumption that a claim is true does not mean that there is evidence to support that claim. Fallacious reasoning assumes that your readers are ignorant and easily swayed, and you’ll ﬁnd to your chagrin that they’re neither.
7. False Analogy – The universe is a mechanism and since every mechanism must have a designer, so does the universe, or he was wearing colors which proves that he is a gang member. Applying an argument which is trivial and deceptive to arrive at a far fetched conclusion is only going to devalue your blog in the eyes of your readers.
8. Questionable Cause – I washed my car so it rained today, or the Chilean earthquake caused the Dow Jones to fall. Simply because an event follows another event chronologically, it does not equate to the assumption that they are in any way related.
9. Straw Man – People who do not contribute to hunger programs want to see children starve, or the Administration’s contraception policies represent eugenics. Oversimplifying a viewpoint in order to attack an essentially hollow argument fails to take into consideration the complexity of an issue.
10. Slippery Slope – If the government passes copyright protection laws the internet will collapse, or if superbikes are banned then all motorcycles will soon be legislated off the roads. If you are basing your blog on the premise that if a particular event happens then there will be a domino effect that will cause a far greater impact than is reasonably likely, you are dynamiting your own post.
11. Genetic Fallacy – Americans shouldn’t buy Mitsubishi cars because they built the WWII Japanese Zero aircraft, or Donny Osmond believes in polygamy since he’s a Mormon. If you are establishing your post’s thesis on assumptions of value, character, or nature about the origins of a particular entity you’re not writing a blog, you’re just slinging mud.
12. Ad populum – All loyal Americans have to reject the Iranian regime, or you can’t believe in democracy while still doing business with the Chinese government. These forms of equating unequatables represent emotional, not factual, arguments. There is in effect no linkage between the two aspects of the correlation other than appealing to patriotic, belief-based, or other jingoistic triggers.
Logical writing is a skill your readers will profoundly appreciate, even though it’s not as ﬂashy or sensational as fallacy-laden posts. Steer clear of adding unnecessary drama and over-simplistic writing, or you’ll see your argument undercut and your audience migrate to blogs written by more level-headed individuals.

Five Resources for Getting a Great Domain Name

1.) Use Domain Name Expiration Services

There are plenty of services and web sites out that there just monitor domain names and make it a business of buying and selling these domain names to new customers. Do you have a domain name in mind that someone already owns, try services like NameJet.com and Pool.com to build a waiting list that will notify you if the domains ever become available.

2.) Online Auctions and Domain Marketplaces

Just like there are sites for domain name expiration, there are also plenty of web sites that deal with web site and domain sales. You can always visit Ebay.com to see what domains they have available, but since they are not a focused business on just domains and web sites, it’s usually rare to find any quality listings. Flippa.com is one of the largest site and domain auction sites on the internet. Make sure they are on your list of places to look to buy existing domains and web sites.

3.) High End Domain Resellers

The high end domain market will always be an interesting one. While some people find it hard to imagine paying $100 for a single domain name, some domain names are sold for millions of dollars. For high end domain name purchases and sales, be sure to visit sites like Sedo.com and GreatDomains.com. These sites will help you find high end domain names that are for sale, or can also be used to sell your own domain names.

4.) Webmaster and Domain Forums

No matter what type of webmaster or marketing forum you are on, there is probably some discussion about buying web sites and domains. Don’t be afraid to make a posting of your own about a domain that you may be looking to buy. Someone on the forum probably has a domain name that you are looking for, or at least knows a few good resources. WarriorForum.com, DNForum.com and NamePros.com are all great places to network and communicate with other domainers and webmasters.

5.) Contacting the Domain Owner Directly

When all else fails and you can’t seem to find a great domain, your last resort may be trying to contact the actual domain owners that you are looking to own. If there is already a web site or business running at the domain name you are looking for, it’s a lot less likely that you will be able to buy the domain name. There are also services out there that will do the contact and buying process for you. You can find domain ownership through Whois searches or using domain buying services offered by GoDaddy and other domain registries.

Using the Resources You Have at Hand

As you can see, there are plenty of ways for you to get your hands on a dream domain. Instead of settling for something else, make sure you take the time to look through the resources you have at hand. It might be easier and cheaper to get your hands on a great domain than you think!

Google Affiliate Ads Already Working on Blogger?

For a while now we have been seeing rumors of a Google powered affiliate ad network. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense, as they already have the infrastructure, the publishers and the advertisers.
Despite that so far we haven’t seen anything tangible.
Last week I was browsing on YouTube, however, and I came across an interesting video published by the Blogger Help team (i.e., Google’s division who helps Blogger users). The video is below if you want to see it:

Neat huh?
Basically you just need an AdSense account and you can start adding affiliate links directly on your content. The earnings will go straight to your AdSense account and you’ll get paid as you normally do.
The bad news is that apparently the Affiliate Ads are only available on the Blogger platform. Hopefully this is just a test phase, and once they think the product is ready for prime time they will open it for all platforms.

While the media and the public has began referring to him by the name Ram Charan Tej since a very long time, the actor himself seems to be unhappy with it. He prefers to be called Ram Charan over Ram Charan Tej.

Finally, Charan has decided to clarify this to one and all. He used the social media to send this message the film lovers and the media. "My dad named me Ram Charan not Ram Charan Tej. So I feel good when people call me just "Ram Charan". I also request the media to note this," he wrote on his twitter page.

Now the question is why didn't the actor object when the director's used Ram Charan Teja in the title cards of his film. Times change, people change, tastes change! So everybody, from now onwards Mega Powerstar is just Ram Charan, not Ram Charan Tej!
