The Brainwavz HM5 studio monitor headphones provide for exceptionally accurate sound reproduction, their neutral sound signature replicate audio as it was intended to be heard. The HM5 feature an over the ear design which sits comfortably, providing an adequate seal that limits leakage. These closed dynamic monitor headphones are designed to give astounding sound for almost any genre of music and like all Brainwavz the headphones have a simple but stylish look to them.

Included in the package are two detachable cables, a short 1.2 meter cable that is intended to be used with a portable rig and a larger 3 meter cable for use in a home environment. The large 43mm CCAW drivers are surprisingly easy to drive, but they do benefit with amping if used with a portable rig.

Ainol are officially the first company to release a tablet running Android 4.0 AKA Ice Cream Sandwich and its not even a ARM based tablet, it will be running on a MIPS based processor by Ingenic semiconductors. The Ainol Novo 7 Basic tablet isn’t exactly new, it has been around for a month, last week it made news as ingenic were working with MIPS to get the official go ahead to port Android 3.0, but now it looks like they are going straight to Android 4.0.

The tablet has a 1ghz MIPS based processors, 7″ 800×480 resolution screen, capacitive touch panel and 8GB of internal memory. The price tag is slated to be around $150 for the 8GB version. Ainol also seem to be rebadging the Novo7 into the Ainovo.

This review will focus purely on the M4s sound as opposed to an unboxing with specs.

First of all, for all of you new Brainwavz M4 owners – BURN IN your M4s – it vastly improves the sound!

Straight off the bat you can hear that the M4s have bass, and decent bass at that. The sound of the bass can be compared to the M2’s bass: dense and strong with an obvious punch behind it. However, in terms of the level of bass, the M2s still reign supreme with much more of an ‘oomph’ behind the bass that’s very noticeable when swapping between the two. Some may find the M2’s bass to be a bit overpowering and heavy – this is where the M4s strike another pro point: the bass may be solid, however it by no means overpowers the other sounds. Read on after the break.

Moving on to the mids/trebles and highs, as well as the sibilance, the M4s have it all, and in HD! The detail and ability to sound analytical with mid to high range sounds really lets you enjoy a vast range of music. This side of the M4 can be compared to the detail and accuracy of the B2′s – think the B2s little cousin, but with bass – the best of both worlds in my opinion. The detailed treble and sibilance lends itself to acoustics and vocals yet do not focus on it to the point of it sounding harsh.

This marriage of ebony and ivory does allow for many music genres, however one that stands out the most with the M4s is good ol’ rock and roll. Chugging guitar riffs together with raw rock vocals and wailing solos sound simply wonderful.

In comparison to the M3s, the M4s have a very noticeably different sounding bass – as mentioned, it’s much denser sounding as opposed to the M3’s airier, more mellow sounding bass. The M3s may be very balanced and detailed in their sound, but I’m afraid the point goes to the M4 for their detail – the M4s simply sound crisper than the M3s in general.

Once the M4s are suitably burnt in, one of the major differences in the sound is the smoothing, or melding of the bass and the mids and highs. Both are evident to begin with, but the burn in really does marry them both into a wonderful unity of harmonious pleasure. You get a sense that the M4s have grown and settled into itself, creating a smoother, more rounded overall sound.

But my philosophy is: you’ll never truly know until you try it out ourself (that doesn’t apply to everything in life, might I add – skydiving is simply out of the question)!
