When listeners tune in to WBIM on Monday nights from 9-11 p.m. they will hear senior Chris Groux, communications major, on the radio teamed up with senior psychology major Mike Sousa for “My Past, Present, and Future Life,” a radio talk show new to the BSU airwave community this semester.

hour and 10 minutes of discussion mixed in with about 50 minutes of music each week.  When asked how Groux and Sousa came together for the show, Groux stated “He’s the type of person that would never bring me down, so that makes him a perfect co-host.” Sousa then went on to say, “I knew it was going to be about comedy and me and him are laughing with each other every day.”

Each week focuses on a different topic, discussed through what Groux calls a “comedic lens” all of which Groux established prior to the beginning of the semester.  The show is an “attempt to answer life’s questions in a way,” Groux said. “You go online and research the topic and find what other people are saying and you create discussion questions based on that.”  Music is then selected in order to match the theme of the discussion for that week. The music can be taken from any genre so long as it relates to the topic.

Last week [the show] addressed the past and included a variety of 90’s music throughout the course of the show. “It’s a mix of the top 40’s and the indies so you can attract the most people. That’s really what it’s all about,” said Groux.  Since the show is based more heavily on discussion, the music, Groux jokes, “is almost like a commercial break in a way, but a really entertaining commercial break.”

Groux explained that the reasoning behind the show had a lot to do with the fact that he intends to graduate this May.  “I wanted to do something different, something the radio show hadn’t seen before.”  “My Past, Present, and Future Life” streams on demand through Podcast on iTunes, the show’s Facebook and Youtube accounts, and pastpresentfuturelife.wordpress.com, the uncut episodes streaming fully through the wordpress website.

Streaming the show on demand allows for audiences to listen at their leisure.”To get the full feel of the show, broadcast is the best way, but if you really wanted to, you get quite a bit of it online,” Groux stated.  “I wanted to make a show that moves as fast as the real world does,” said Groux

An underlying theme, Groux stated that “part of [the show] is to raise awareness about disabilities” as both Groux and Sousa have a disability. Groux wants to address the preconceived notions that exist surrounding disabilities and intends to address disabilities as a general topic for one of the upcoming weeks, “discussing that in a humorous but knowledgeable way” said Groux.

This week’s discussion, however, was based on friendship, and featured music by the Beatles, Newfound Glory, and Less Than Jake. Groux and Sousa invited one of their friends, senior Bobby Sullivan, a psychology major, to join them in the studio.  “I’m basically his fuel to his fire for his funniness,” said Sullivan about Groux. “I’m just another excuse for us to argue some more, but argue on the air,” he later joked.

This certainly proved to be true when the trio engaged in a segment that tested how well they knew each other.  “What do I find most annoying in the world? Rhymes with Obby,” Groux asked to his fellow hosts.  “Not funny!” Bobby laughed.

Although Groux graduates in May, he hopes to continue his show after graduation and has taken the technological steps necessary to help ease the transition from the BSU radio to his own.  Talk radio, Groux believes, is “a dying art. Not a lot of people tune in anymore and I think [the internet] is a good way to bring it back.”

“Hopefully the show will make your sides hurt from laughing, while making you think about the world in new and exciting ways,” Groux stated, quoting the motto for the show.
