After reading a story about year 3010, some ESL students in Room 20 did a project. They used their imagination to create inventions for the future. They wrote and illustrated their inventions.

Music Festival

On May 2nd, 2012, 27 of our fourth and fifth grade students participated in the 1000 voice elementary chorus at the MPS Biennial Music Festival, held at the US Cellular Arena. The chorus was co-directed by Mrs. Marks. In addition, several AAL students in grades 2-5 participated in the Elementary Strings ensemble.

Fourth Grade Astronomers

The fourth grade students researched constellations for their current IB unit. After, students created and named their own constellations. They included a short story or legend describing how their constellation got its name and came to be.

Blowing Up a Balloon

Room 22 learned about states of matter and how matter changes. One of the activities we did was blowing up a balloon without using our mouth! Anna M. blew up a balloon by combining a solid (baking soda) and a liquid (vinegar) in a clear, empty bottle. We learned that by combining these two types of matter, we can create the third type of matter called gas. In this activity we created a gas called carbon dioxide.

Third Grade Researchers

The 3rd graders researched ecosystems in science for their recent IB unit. They worked on group and individual projects. They had the choice of making either a powerpoint or diorama, or a poster and a diorama to show their learning.

Real World Experiences

Community Based Instruction takes the classroom out into the real world! Each Friday Room 26 takes a field trip to promote social skills, functional living skills, and enhance the curriculum of their monthly themes. The March theme, “Can I Buy It”, included a trip to US Bank. In April Room 26 visited Mitchell Park Domes for their theme, “Plants Can Grow”. These adventures out into the community are always a great experience!

On April 20, Room 6 went for a walk around the block to collect litter. Danielle, Eli, and Aliyanah hold some of the litter that was collected.

Math Literacy Family Game Night

Many parents and children attended our Math Literacy Family Game Night. They played math and reading games, learned about exceptional websites, and read books in our school library. Each family was given copies of the games to make for their use at home. Many families also won raffle prizes. What a great night!

Second Grade Entrepreneurs

The students in Room 24 became entrepreneurs when they studied how businesses provide goods and services to meet the needs and wants of the community. They invented a product, advertised it, and then sold the product to classmates. Students had to be good communicators as they talked to their “customers” and sold their products.

Room 6 Studies Earth

Room 6′s study of Earth focuses on bodies of water and landforms. Maya, Sarah, Hton Naya, Aniles, and Huechim use connecting cubes to compare the size of an ocean, a lake, a river, a pond, and a puddle.
