Getting Ready to Change Accountants

If you have it in your head that it is time to change the accountant you use in your business, it is important that you are clear on:

What you want from your accountant
The level of service you require
How committed you are to the change

Too often, many people consider changing their accountant but when it comes to the crunch they back off. You must be sure about this. It may simply be a matter of having a chat with your existing professional, voicing your concerns and worries and putting together a plan for resolving them. This may be all that is required. However, if you are certain that a change is required, at the very least have the following written down and be ready to discuss them:

What type of services you want for your business from your accountant
Be clear on where your business is going – expanding/contracting/survival
A list of the items you wish to discuss, such as finance, profitability, human resources, where you see yourself in 3 years time…
Ask for references, and call them
Check their website
Ask about staff turnover and who would be looking after your file

It is always easier to work with people who you like, therefore if there is no rapport with the prospective accountant you are interviewing, then perhaps always have a second choice on your list

PEZA locators exempted from BIR review

MANILA – The Department of Finance (DOF) has exempted businesses located in Philippine Export Zone Authority (PEZA) special economic zones from registering as importers with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

The DOF said locators that are accredited by PEZA may secure import permits from the Bureau of Customs (BOC) without passing the BIR review.

“All locators of PEZA special economic zones throughout the Philippines, duly registered with PEZA are exempted from the requirements and shall be eligible for accreditation as importers with the Bureau of Customs account management office,” Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said in revenue memorandum circular 04-2015.

DTI expects lower prices for more products

MANILA, Philippines – Many manufacturers and retailers have heeded the Department of Trade and Industry’s call to lower the prices of basic goods, amid the continued drop in oil prices.

The DTI said the price of some basic goods, such as milk, pandesal, as well as some construction materials, have gone down by an average of 2 to 4 percent.

The DTI maintained that the prices of basic and prime commodities should reflect the declining cost of petroleum products.

Last week, manufacturers of milk and community-baked breads have agreed to lower the suggested retail prices, except for evaporated milk.

MANILA – The fight hasn’t even started yet.

Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares said the recent victory of Sarangani Rep. and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao in his tax case is merely a preliminary decision that denied the BIR’s petition to dismiss Pacquiao’s request for a review of the tax case against him.

The Court of Appeals (CTA), in its January 27 ruling, ordered the BIR to answer within 10 days the petition for review filed by Pacquiao.

Henares, however, said the BIR will file a motion for reconsideration on the CTA decision.

“Sinabi lang ng Court of Appeals na may jurisdiction siya, preliminary palang ‘yan. We are filing a motion for reconsideration on that decision,” Henares said at a press conference after the launch of the agency’s latest tax campaign on Tuesday…Read More…
