It’s Friday!

That’s a relief, isn’t it? The weekend stretches before us like the far end of an Olympic swimming pool, threatening to drown us with its infinite possibilities. And so begins the first ordeal of our leisure time: where should we go for Friday drinks?

Do you want comfy armchairs and a table? Is it the shiny chrome of a mega-pub or the squishy confines of the new chic grubby small bars for tonight?

Or do you want to drown out your colleagues’ inane chit-chat and gossip with the doof-doof of the clubbing scene? Outdoors, indoors, upstairs or basement, balcony, booth, pool room or pokies, drowning is very much what it feels like when choosing a place from the sheer number of venues in Sydney.

Well, how about this little nugget: the Hotel Hollywood. It’s long been cherished by locals as one of the finest drinking spots in all of Sydney. The Hollywood’s been around for years and it has the personality to prove it.

Get there early and score a spot on high bar stools around the funny-shaped drinkers’ bar. Otherwise you should have the pick of tables in the back room. Be warned, however: we have had trouble even getting in the place after about 6.30 on a Friday, it’s that popular.

Why is it so popular?

For starters, they keep their beer really well there. I’d wager they do the best Coopers Pale Ale in Sydney. There is also piles of character to this little charmer. It’s called the Hollywood because just down the road is the old Paramount Studios.

The Hollywood was taken over by real-life starlet, the lovely Doris Goddard, who had a film career spanning almost three decades, and she kept the name.

Inside the pub you’ll find her pictures and lots of other celebs’ on the walls. And if there’s a vacant stool on the left-hand side of the pub, don’t take it. That’s where Doris likes to sit and she won’t be best pleased you nicking it!

For food, don’t expect a bistro menu or a buffet. Like any really good drinking pub, you might be lucky enough to find a sandwich, though the $15 cheese board ain’t half bad: you get aged cheddar, single cream brie, olives and crackers for that.

If you do feel peckish, the rest of Surry Hills beckons. On your doorstep is the incredible Long Grain if you fancy Thai and are feeling extravagant.

One thing’s for sure, the moment you step back onto the street as you leave the Hollywood, you’ll be thinking about the next time you can go back there. It’s retro, remarkable and contagious – just as a proper pub should be.

The Hotel Hollywood
Corner of Foster Street and Hunt Street
Surry Hills, Sydney.
Happy hour: 5-7pm

Weekly classic cocktails (this week’s was the noble Grasshopper)
Beer of the day and house sparkling is $5 a glass.

Fed up with potato-based sauce-soakers for dinner? Chips, roast potatoes, baked spuds, mash… they can get a little bit dull; a bit run-of-the-mill. Well, here’s something that will change gears for you: polenta chips.

Mrs Romance is very ‘meh’ when it comes to potato goods. I love the humble spud, so there’s always conflict here.

Polenta chips, however, are the best compromise we’ve found so far. They look like chips, but they taste better and their texture is… is… sorry, got distracted. They’re crispy and crunchy outside but inside they’re creamy and soft and… and… sorry, distracted again. And drooling now.

Okay, so how do you make them? This is the best bit: They’re easy!

Here’s what you need:

1 cup polenta

4 cups water

1 stock cube

1 clove of garlic – finely chopped

1 tbsp butter – optional

Salt and pepper

Sprinkle of chili powder (optional)

A big pan

A baking tray lined with baking paper

Oil – preferably rice bran but vegetable or sunflower oil is good too.

Here’s what you do:

In your big pan, boil the water and dissolve the stock cube.

Add the garlic.

Keep the water boiling and stir in a steady, fine stream of polenta until it’s all in there.

Keep stirring – you may well need to add more water as you cook. The polenta absorbs the stock and swells.

Keep cooking and stirring. You can test whether the
polenta’s cooked by squishing it between your fingers.

If it goes to mush, you know it’s ready.

Once the polenta’s done, it should have a thick soupy consistency, and not too watery. You can add the butter now if you want. It just gives a bit of gloss and extra creaminess to the mix.

You can also add extra flavours like chili to it if you like.

Season the polenta with salt and pepper – but remember the stock will have that flavour already.

Make sure the baking paper completely covers the baking tray, including the sides.

Once it’s cooled a bit, pour the polenta onto the baking tray. Don’t worry about spreading it out, just pour. This stuff is self-settling!

Put the tray in the fridge for at least two hours or until it’s completely set. You can test it the same way you do a cake by poking it with a toothpick. If the pick comes away clean, you’re good to go. Also if you wobble the tray and the polenta moves like jelly, it’s not ready.

When it’s set, lift the polenta out onto a cutting board using the paper.

Slice the polenta into even oblongs like big thick chips.

Heat a pan of oil until it’s very hot. You’ll need enough oil to cover half the sides of the polenta chips.

Cook the chips in batches, turning them carefully so that all four long sides are cooked and crispy. I twice-fry mine for added crunch.

Drain the chips and serve as quickly as possible, because everyone will be shouting at you that they want to eat them!

But is polenta all that good for you?

According to health experts, polenta is:

“…a low carbohydrate food rich in vitamin A and C making it a good source of the caroteinoids, lutein and zeaxanthin. The concentration reaches a level of 1,355 micrograms per 100 grams. The level of beta-carotene is 97 micrograms per 100 grams with health benefits like cancer and heart disease prevention.”

On the other hand, make sure you get organic polenta. Polenta is ground corn. Corn is now pretty much all genetically modified, so to avoid any health implications (we don’t know that much about GM, let’s face it), organic is the way to go here.

It was the classic damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don’t scenario. Shave; get neck spots. Don’t shave; grow a beard and Mrs Romance will never kiss me again. I used to dread shaving. I’d put it off until Mrs R lost her temper.

But one day, Mrs Romance had a bring-a-friend invitation to her beauticians. Her real friend dropped out so, being a great guy, I stepped in. I did the whole ‘well, I don’t really want to, but I’ll go because you want me to’ thing, secretly looking forward to experiencing ‘a pamper’.

I am happy to say the whole experience was in no way emasculating, which is nice! And at the end, the therapist lady did a diagnostic check on my skin. For my neck, she recommended a facial scrub to use in the shower. So, being the good wife, Mrs Romance got me some!

Now I use it in the shower before I shave and I tell you what, I’ve had virtually no neck spots since.

Which products do I use?

For a long time, I used the Dermalogica Daily Clean Scrub. I say for a long time because one tube lasts that long.

You don’t need to use that much, and as I said, I only used it before shaving – not every day.

Recently, Mrs R has given me this: the Bioré Pore Unclogging Scrub.

It’s pretty good and doesn’t smell of anything much, which I appreciate. I don’t want to finish up ‘smelling like a tart’s handbag’ as my dad would put it.

My only reservations – apart from not being able to pronounce the brand name with any confidence – are there’s not as much ‘scrubbiness’ in this one as the Dermalogica and the packaging isn’t very good. The lid doesn’t come off very easily and every time I open the tube, I feel like I’m going to pull the whole thing apart.

Otherwise, I really like the product and I will continue to use it.

So if you’re a guy with neck spots (they’re caused by ingrown hairs, by the way) or a lady with a neck-spotted man, get some of this. It’ll fix it up in no time!

Bioré Pore Unclogging Scrub
$10.99 AUS (Priceline)
£4.99 UK (Boots)
$7.99 USA (CVS Pharmacy)

Dermalogica Daily Clean Scrub
$35.00 AUS (Dermalogica.com.au)
£24.80 UK (Dermalogica.co.uk)
$21.60 USA (drugstore.com)

The traffic, the markets, the street hawkers, the grime; the food carts, the temples, the madness, the crime… it’s what makes this iconic South-East Asian capital buzz. It’s what you think of when you hear the word ‘Bangkok’.

But way above the steam and noise of Bangkok’s sprawling, festering street life, serenity can be found. Hidden nests atop the great towering buildings of KrungThep. That’s what the locals call it. The City of Angels.

And ensconced in the beauty of one of Bangkok’s rooftop bars, you really feel like you’re in heaven.

I really don’t think Thais are as worried about OH&S or building codes as we are in Australia. These bars just wouldn’t exist here. They’re just so high and the safety barriers are… well, non-existent. But the result is some of the most extraordinary watering holes we’ve ever been to.

We reckon Banyan Tree is the most unbelievable place. Split into Vertigo Restaurant and Grill, and the Moon Bar, everything about this bar is beautiful: the design, views, the drinks… sitting having a drink and a snack here, you really feel like a star.

With its great arch that loops around the top of the bar like a slipping halo, Red Sky is dramatic to say the least.

Its atrium wine fridge is impressive too. Staff have to abseil to the bottle you choose inside like ninjas!

Sky Bar

Famous for the scene in The Hangover 2, this rooftop bar was probably outstanding before it became famous. After all, it is the world’s highest open-air bar.

Sadly, it’s now cashing in a bit and we didn’t like it much here. The bar was very busy, we were corralled in a small balcony and made to wait before we were allowed onto the rooftop proper.

To get to the bar, you need to walk through the restaurant area, which is expensive. If we were having dinner and hoards of photo-hungry tourists kept walking through, I wouldn’t be very happy. Not well thought through, I’m afraid.

What is it about a rooftop bar? Perhaps it’s drinking champagne with the city at your feet. Maybe it’s the feeling of the stars above you with a cocktail in your hand. Or it could just be the glamour of fine wine with your fine wife.

Of course, it could just be that being up above the streets, you’re away from all ‘those people down there’.

Whatever it is, Mrs Romance and I always keep an eye out for a chance of a tipple on the top of the world. We’ve been to some spectacular places, but here are some more that we can’t wait to try.

If you haven’t been to the Clock Hotel before, you are either under-age or you’re not interested in pubs. This one’s a belter and shouldn’t be missed.

Obviously a classic Aussie pub at its heart, the Clock has undergone many incarnations. From the outside, it’s clear that it’s always been a pub, with its classic Australian wrap-around balcony and corner-stone attitude. From saloon to gastro to its current slick-but-accessible local feel, the Clock Hotel is a Surry Hills favourite.

The recent renovations to its sports bar has seen the Clock become even more of a central point for Surry Hills drinkers. There’s even more space to take a seat and live life easy in the drop-level garden terrace bar, handy for smokers. The pool tables live on in the pool room, adjacent to the back bar that now houses more of a seating-and-eating feel.

The first floor is still the most popular place to go, however. The balcony, wrapping around two of the four sides has that classic Aussie pub atmosphere and it’s a great place to watch Surry Hills go by.

Drinks and food are both good, though it’s a smart choice if you’re getting straight forward drinks (not cocktails) to head downstairs for quicker service.

There’s a range of happy hours and specials every day. Here are some of the options we found in the Clock recently:

Try your luck at Double Thursday! Roll a double with the dice and we’ll shout you your round. Roll a double 6 and you will win $25 Clock Dollars, plus your round of drinks for free! Between 7-9pm in the Street Bar.

Start your evening with $4 local tap beer, cider and house wines in Street, Lounge and the Courtyard bars. All cocktails from the fantastic Balcony Bar are $9.50 from 6pm-7pm. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Food goes from Monday – Friday 12pm – 3pm, then 5pm – 10pm, and weekends 12pm – 10pm.
Prices range from Cuban torpedo sliders ($6 each) and ‘Nibblers’ ($8 – $16) to pizzas, ‘Bun-Stuffers’ and mains ($15 – $22) – and it’s all pretty bloody good grub!

So if you’re looking for a good drink, good food and good atmosphere, the Clock’s a really good option – and it’s right opposite Messina Gelato if you fancy a late-night ice-cream… but more on that later. For now…

You know those occasional meals you have that, even as you’re eating them, you know you’ll remember them forever? That’s what happened to us in Pearl Beach recently.

Pearl Beach is a little waterside town in the Central Coast of New South Wales, population 400 – give or take. These lucky few have on their doorstep, not only a beautiful stretch of the Australian coastline, but also an award-winning restaurant.

Pearls on the Beach is a family-run restaurant that has been dishing up deliciousness for a good 10 years now. We decided to give it a go while we were away on a romantic weekend break.

It’s a lovely little place, right on the beach. Inside has a beachy feel too. White walls, exposed beams, simple yet elegant furniture – it feels like you’re in someone’s (really big restaurant-like) beach house.

The menu isn’t that big – all on one page – but it has an interesting methodology to it. Instead of the usual, entrée, main and dessert option (though there is one) Pearls recommends ordering around three of the smaller dishes each and a dessert. This showcases the restaurant’s food better. It’s a similar idea to the sorely missed Darlinghurst institution Universal.

Looking through the menu, we wanted to try more than just three each, but thought better of it – especially when Mrs Romance did her usual trick of heading straight to the desserts. It was as enticing as the rest of the offerings.

Concerned about imminent food envy, ordering turned into a bit of a competition.

First course:

Mrs Romance had the roast beetroot, portabello and spinach risotto with goats curd and crushed hazelnuts.

I had the zucchini, herb and goat’s cheese kuku (a Persian version (!) of a frittata) with a petit herb salad and capsicum coulis.

Round 1: Mr Romance 0 – Mrs Romance 1.

My kuku was light and fluffy and the goat’s cheese gave the dish a beautiful accent, but Mrs R’s risotto was smooth, warm and welcoming, and the nuts gave a crunchy texture that was supreme.

Second course:

Mrs R chose the kingfish crudo, pickled crudo, pickled jicama (a type of Mexican yam), black beans, coriander and a roast jalapeño vinaigrette with freshly baked warm tortilla.

I went for the vadouvan (French-ified Indian spice mix) dusted sea scallops, spiced carrot puree, lentils, shaloots and pomegranate.

Round 2: Mr Romance 1 – Mrs Romance 1.

The scallops were fat and juicy, the puree was perfectly spiced and the pomegranate popped a zing into the dish that completed the palette. Mrs R’s tortilla was good, but not entirely satisfying.

Third course:

Mrs Romance went for the grilled king prawns, popcorn grits, almond, chilly, corn and port scratching crumble with a scallion oil and bisque dressing.

I leapt on the slow cooked miso glazed pork neck fillet, soba noodle, shitake and seaweed salad and ponzu (a Japanese sour citrus sauce) gel.

Round 3: Mr Romance 2 – Mrs Romance 1.

Mrs R’s dish was packed full of flavour and texture, but the miso glazed pork neck fell apart at a touch, and the ponzu gel gave the whole thing an incredible richness.

Dessert:

Mrs Romance had made up her mind on her sweet before we’d even ordered wine. The salted Belgian dark chocolate fudge cake, with popcorn caramel and peanut butter ice-cream was unbelievable.

It left my exquisite malt sponge, with caramelised banana, chocolate malt ganache and banana ice-cream feeling a little underwhelmed.

Final round: Mr Romance 2 – Mrs Romance 2.

So there we were. A draw. A belly-bursting, pants-stretching draw.

In my mind, I won at sudden death. Our coffees came but I had ordered a cafe corretto – an espresso with a shot of Italian grappa. In reality, it was just that one step further into the realm of over-indulgence.

Our waddle home spoke volumes.

Why is Australia so damn freaky?! We’ve travelled a fair bit around this amazing island continent and it has never failed to impress me with its weird-ass beauty. It’s the Cameron Diaz of countries: sometimes it looks like a class A model, other times it’s so strange, it just looks wrong.

Early explorers didn’t have the benefit of modern popular references to understand the newest part of the New World. What they found was an unforgiving country with some really weird geographical features.

Here are the ones we’ve come across and believe me, these photos don’t do seeing them in real life justice.

Uluru, Northern Territory

The most famous of Australian natural landmarks. Initially called Ayres Rock by the white guys that discovered it, the Rock is now known by its original name and is part of the amazing Kata Tjuta National Park.

Kata Tjuta, Northern Territory

Also known as the Olgas, these weird stone hills are sacred to the local people, where they come to do ‘secret men’s business’ training the young boys to become men.

It’s easy to see why this place is sacred; the landscape is beautiful and the view down through the Valley of the Winds is breath-taking. Kata Juta means ‘Many heads’ in the local aboriginal language.

The Twelve Apostles, Victoria

Enormous fingers of land protruding from the ocean, these beautiful rocks on the south coast of Victoria are slowly but surely disappearing. There aren’t 12 anymore and the big one on the left fell over a few years ago.

The Devil’s Marbles, Northern Territory

Exposed by millions of years of soil erosion, these stone balls are still changing today. This one had split only the week before we arrived. But don’t worry, there are hundred more whole ones dotted about this bizarre Northern Territory landscape, about 100km south of Tennant Creek.

The Three Sisters, New South Wales

A highlight of the Blue Mountains in good ol’ New South Wales, these three mysterious peaks jut out from the mountainside conveniently near an excellent viewing platform in Katoomba. You can walk down to the foot of these majestic edifices… or is it edifi… via the enticingly named ‘Giant’s Staircase’.

Wave Rock, Western Australia

This crazy cliff looks exactly like a huge fossilized wave about to break on you. There’s no scale to this picture, but the rock hangs 15 metres above you and makes you feel really small. Found in Hyden, Western Australia, it’s another lucky victim of wind and rain erosion. When you go there, don’t miss the strange cave called the Hippo’s Yawn, just down the road.

The Pinnacles Desert, Western Australia

This creepy area of Western Australia near the beautiful beaches of Cervantes is like an enormous field full of stone spikes. These stone pillars have been slowly exposed as the soil erodes leaving the weather and time to sharpen into spikes. It’s an eerie place to visit.

Kings Canyon, Northern Territory

Hidden away in the Red Centre, this incredible canyon drops over 100m to the floor below, where you’ll find the Garden of Eden. It’s a sacred valley and series of waterholes to the Luritja people, native to this remote part of the Northern Territory.

So you’ve got two choices now, haven’t you? You can either get out Cameron Diaz’s full portfolio of work or get out and see some of these amazing places. I know which one I’d go for.

I remember seeing something on TV once where a woman had her bag searched at customs. The officer commented on her packing skills, saying it was the neatest, most organized suitcase he’d ever seen. I’m not like that… but I’m not like Huckleberry Fin either.

In the same way taking something apart is easier than putting it together, I prefer unpacking to packing – and here’s my full argument on the topic, by the way.

After a fair bit of practice, I’ve whittled my packing technique down to this list I want to share with you here.

I wrote this with a two-week holiday somewhere hot in mind. So quantities should be adjusted depending on how long you’re going away for. If you’re going on a ski holiday, ignore this list for the most part… and don’t forget your skis!

Make sure you have:

Enough T-shirts for at least 10 days if you’re going for as long as that. This means a T for every day.

At least three polo shirts. Polos are great travelling tops. They can be casual and at the same time can be dressed up a bit. Also because they have a collar, polos are good for protecting your neck from the sun.

At least one nice shirt. This doesn’t mean a business shirt. You want one that looks good with jeans or shorts but that you can also wear out at night. Also, choose a dark colour – it’ll hide sweat marks but also food marks. We get clumsier on holiday – fact!

A light jacket or blazer – there’ll always be one cool night while you’re away, guaranteed.

Three pairs of shorts – and no cut-off denim shorts. They look lame and scream ‘tourist’.

Board shorts for the beach. In Brazil men wear a sunga, which is about as tight and small as you should be legally allowed to go. Throw away tight Speedo swimmers. In Australia they are laughingly referred to as ‘budgie-smugglers’. Sometimes surfers wear these horrendous articles under their board shorts or wetsuits. This is a functional choice. They are not for show!

One pair of jeans. These should be comfortable so not too tight, but, gents, not too baggy either. You’re not a ‘90s rapper, like it or not. Tighter jeans actually make you look thinner. Why only one pair? Jeans take up a lot of space.

One pair of pants (the American type, not the British). Again, don’t take your suit trousers. They should be light but with a front seam. They should look good with that shirt you’re taking and go with one your polos. NO DRAWSTRINGS!

As many pairs of underpants as you can fit. Go for a pair for every day plus one. If you’re going for more than four weeks, you’ll have to buy more or (gulp) wash some. You can’t carry 30 pairs of grots around with you. That’s mental!

Three pairs of socks – preferably dark. You might never need them, but socks are great for packing around delicate stuff you bring back and also filling shoes so they don’t get too squashed.

Shoes. If you haven’t already, get used to flip-flops (aka ‘thongs’ in Australia – tee hee! ‘sloppies’ in South Africa, and bizarrely ‘jandels’ in New Zealand). They’re flat, light, easy to get on and off and most importantly, they leave the smallest tan lines.

If, like me, you have enormous feet, you can only really take one or two pairs of shoes with you before your suitcase is chockers. So pack shoes you will wear. I usually take a smart-ish brown pair that look good with jeans or pants – and a pair of casual trainers – but not exercise sneakers. They’re too big and very ugly.

Oh and I usually wear my shoes on the plane, not the trainers. Two reasons: they’re slip-on shoes, so they’re easy to get on and off, and they look better. Better dressed means better chance of an upgrade.

In your wash bag, you’ll need your razor and shaving stuff – I use a brush and soap stick thus avoiding the aerosol problem, deodorant, which I just put in my check-in luggage. (If you’re travelling domestically, as long as your aerosol has a lock or a lid, they’ll let you carry it on board).

Pack one cologne that is good for day and night. Choose something that has strong packaging like Calvin Klein’s ‘Crave’ so it doesn’t leak in your bag. Don’t forget your toothbrush and toothpaste as well – shops sell tubes under the 100ml limit. Very handy.

Finally, here’s a tip from my mum on how to maximise packing space and reduce creasing: roll – never fold. Once I’ve decided what I’m taking, I roll it all up into small, tight parcels then strategically build my case – just like one o’ them high class lawyers!

What are your best holiday packing tips?

When two people run a blog together, things aren’t always easy. When those two people are married, things can get even more complicated. One thing that we often have trouble with is deciding what to write about.

This time, the ‘discussion’ was about Monday and Tuesday’s travel posts. Mrs Romance had the idea of publishing pictures of her recent trip to the Whitsundays with the Remarkables Group.

I liked the idea, but it would mean her processing the pictures in time. Time, for Mrs R, at the moment, is an even more finite natural resource than coal or gas… especially gas! So perhaps this idea wouldn’t work.

To top it off, Tuesday’s post was to be about the top ten beaches list, a list Mrs R had seen while she was away. She said Whitehaven Beach was the world’s third best beach and Waikiki Beach in Hawaii was at top spot.

I couldn’t find the list.

“Fine,” she said. “I’ll find the list, write the post and do the pictures.”

After that, the ‘discussion’ continued until here I am telling you all about it.

I didn’t find the list in the end, but here are some more pics of Whitehaven Beach – 3rd best beach in the world!
