In the past few years, we have been very fortunate to have had support, both locally and nationally, in providing us classroom technology. You may recall us writing about Donors Choose in the past. Through this website, we've been able to post projects for materials that will help us to learn in creative and engaging ways. Because of the generosity of others, we have received over $40,000 worth of items for our classroom in just the last four years!

Out of everything that we've had funded though, there was one that was completed this year that may just have the students more excited for technology class than every before. We had a project fully funded by Merck KGaA that brought us our very own DJI Phantom 3 Advanced quadcopter!

Although it's been a bit colder around here lately, we managed to get a nice enough day to take our Phantom out during our technology club one afternoon. We made sure that it was registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). We reviewed the regulations such as how we can't allow it to fly at an altitude higher than 400 feet. We also took a look at the different controls so we knew how to fly it before we even took it outside.

We had so much fun flying it! We headed out to the fields behind our school where we set everything up. We calibrated the GPS so that we had a "home" point for it in case we lost connection for some reason. That would've allowed it to return and land on its own. Once that was done, it was time for take-off!

Most students had an opportunity to fly it for a minute or so. Unfortunately the battery only gives us about 20 minutes of flight time and we don't have an extra quite yet. Everyone seemed to really enjoy flying it and being able to watch a live feed of the video on the iPad hooked up to the controller. We're really excited for some nicer weather this spring so that we can take it out again to learn so much more about flight!

It's hard to believe that we're already back for another year! Everybody always says that "summer flew by" but that's because it always feels like it does!

Last year (Mr. Avery's first at KIS), was an amazing year where we learned about so many great things. We learned about 3D modeling, different Google apps, computer programming and even Minecraft! We got to spend time on computers, iPads and Chromebooks. This year we have so many great new things in store, including continuing to learn about computer programming through our new Sphero 2.0s (expect to read more about them later in the year).

For our first classes of the year, we spent time reviewing our rules and expectations. We discussed our school's Acceptable Use Policy and why it was important to respect the property of others and making sure that we're safe when using technology. Then, we took the time to watch a couple short videos and participate in a little activity before we had to go.

Each of the videos that Mr. Avery showed us had a specific purpose, to get conversations going about our priorities and what's most important in life. Both of them were great but we especially loved the one from Kid President! We shared the videos below so that you could watch them. Then, underneath each, we wrote a little bit about what we discussed at the end of each video.

After, we had a discussion about it and talked about how technology can be an amazing tool. It can help us to learn how to do things or to keep in touch with people. But, one student put it best, "Our lives should not be lived through screens." Although technology is a great tool, it shouldn't be the only thing that we are focused on in our lives.

No matter how old you are, we all have knowledge that we can share with others and we should also always take time to learn about things we're interested in.

After watching the videos, since we were sitting for so long, Mr. Avery wanted us to have the chance to get up and move around a little bit. So, we played one of his favorite games called Bear, Karate Girl, Indiana Jones. This is a game that he learned from LearnZillion, as all the teachers play it every year at their TeachFest conference.

The game is very similar to Rock, Paper, Scissors except for the fact that you don't use your fists to play, you use your whole body! In the first round, everyone pairs up with somebody. They then stand back-to-back with them and when Mr. Avery counts to three, you have to turn and face the other person in the pose of either a bear, karate girl or Indiana Jones. If you lose, you're out. If you win or tie you continue on and must find a new person to go against for that round. Sometimes though, we end up with an odd number of people in a round. If we do, Mr. Avery chooses somebody to get a bye and automatically move on to the next round. We keep going round-to-round until we get to a winner. It's so much fun and definitely a great way to get up and get moving again after sitting for a long time!

One class created gifs of each pose to show you how to do them and also so we could explain what beats what.

We wanted to find a proper way to say goodbye to him. We also wanted a way for him to be able to remember us as well (although we know we're very difficult to forget)! One of our fourth grade teachers, Miss Dodge came up with the great idea of doing a video with each class holding up a chalkboard with something they'd miss about him. A third grade teacher, Mrs. Viveiros, helped to coordinate with everyone so that Mr. Avery could get around to all the classrooms to film and put together the video.

Each class did an amazing job of collaborating to decide on something they would miss about Mr. Riley, as well as coming up with a way to act it out without sound. What came together was the video you see above, which could never truly say how much Mr. Riley means to our school.

Mr. Riley, if you read this, we wish you the best of luck and hope that you'll come visit!

It's hard to believe that another year has passed by. The sixth grade students have walked out the door of our elementary school for the final time. Next year they'll walk into the middle school for the next step of their educational journey. It's been an incredible year of fun and learning with projects such as Genius Hour and the Cardboard Challenge. We've enjoyed our field trips to 5 Wits, the Museum of Science, the beach, and Blue Man Group. Sadly though, our year has come to a close.

We always like to try to wrap up the year with some kind of surprise and a way to leave a mark before we go. You may remember our flash mob that we did. That turned out to be a huge hit. Unfortunately, once you've pulled off a flash mob once, it's impossible to do so again! So this year we decided to do something a little bit different.

One of the biggest songs of the year was the Cups Song ("When I'm Gone) by Anna Kendrick. This song was made popular in the movie Pitch Perfect where Anna Kendrick played the tune using only a plastic cup on stage while performing. The students loved doing this and the lyrics matched up perfectly with us leaving to head to another school. So, what you see above is a music video that we created as our final goodbye to our elementary school!

Thanks for a great year and have a wonderful summer!

We have the chance to wade through tidal pools and a creek. We explore for any organisms we can find, including crabs, starfish and fish. Our wonderful guides from Thornton Burgess talk to us about nature and the creatures we discover throughout the day.

This year we got to hear all about the different types of crabs that inhabit the area. There are many different types but some of the ones that we were able to catch were the green crab, rock crab and Jonah crab. Besides just the crabs, we also go to see various fish and even a sea slug!

We pieced together a few different videos from our day for the video above. For a couple shots, we placed the GoPro into buckets of crabs that we caught to get some close-up views of them. A couple of the clips were videos that we shot in the ocean. We had no idea what we had caught on them until we got back to school! In one, if you look closely, you can see a hermit crab walking along the ocean floor. In the second, if you wait patiently, you’ll see a crab emerge from between rocks. When he goes to push a rock out of his way, another crab jumps out to try to grab him!

We had such a beautiful day to learn and explore! Check out some pictures from our incredible day down below!

For those of you who aren't familiar, D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
We've written about Donors Choose on here before. It is a website that allows teachers to ask for materials that are needed or will help provide better opportunities to learn. People can then donate to that project so that the class can have the project funded and get the new items that were asked for. Through this site, our class has received Chromebooks, iPads, Andriod tablets, iPods, camcorders, and many more items. Our most recent project we've had funded though may just be our favorite!

We were fortunate enough to be able to have a project funded for a Makerbot Replicator 2 3D printer! We've had so much fun downloading models from Thingiverse and printing them out to use in our classroom. Our next step will be to use 3D modeling software to make and print some of our own creations!

Are you curious to know how they work? We were when we first got it too! Instead of using ink, the printer uses something called PLA filament. They come on big spools and are fed into something called the extruder. The extruder heats up the material to melt it and make it more flexible and then then creates the model by moving around and placing the melted PLA on a build plate. We created a time lapse video so that you can see the printer in action! In the video, we printed dice that can be used for our math games and activities. It takes a while for them to print so we took about a three hour video and cut it down to about four minutes so you can see how our 3D printer works!

And in even better news, we just had another one funded as well. So we'll soon have two 3D printers!

This post was featured on the Skype Social Good blog.

How can I connect concepts my students are learning about to real world experiences? That’s the question that teachers ponder every day. It’s easy to throw a math problem up on the board for children to solve or show them a picture of animals as we learn about habitats. But the question always remains, why is this important? Why do we need to know how to add fractions? Why do we need to learn about animal habitats? Without allowing students to make connections to their own lives, learning is never truly authentic.

Teaching in a small rural town, about 30 minutes outside of Boston, Massachusetts, my sixth grade class doesn’t always have easy access to people and places outside of school. However, technology has provided new opportunities to bring innovative learning opportunities into the classroom. I have turned to Skype in the classroom many times to allow the children of my class to meet students, teachers, and other people outside of our own community. We’ve learned about weather on a Skype call with meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz from Fox 25 News in Boston. We gained a better understanding of geology by bringing a park ranger from Yellowstone into our classroom via Skype. We’ve strengthened our geography skills by playing Mystery Skype with classes across the United States, as well as in Brazil and England. All of these are just the tip of the iceberg as to how we’ve used Skype in the classroom and how we can continue to use it in the future.

One day I saw a tweet pop up on my Twitter feed from @SkypeClassroom asking if anyone would be interested in a Skype call with an astronomer Dr. Carol Christian of the Space Telescope Science Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Teaching a unit on space this year, I jumped at the opportunity. My class was beyond excited to speak with her and learn all about her work. We spent some time researching Dr. Christian, learning about her work on the Hubble Telescope. We found a TEDx talk she had done which led us on a journey through the universe and all that Hubble has done to give us a better view of the vast expanse beyond our solar system.

As the familiar ringing of a Skype call rang through the classroom, my students smiled with anticipation. When Dr. Christian answered, we were greeted by her warm smile and a wonderful view of a Hubble replica in the background. Her interesting facts along with her sense of humor immediately had the students hooked! She made sure to save plenty of time for questions, knowing that students were extremely inquisitive and would have some great prompts for discussion. One of the questions that students seemed especially excited to hear the answer to was “What is the most amazing thing you have seen through the Hubble Telescope?” Having looked through the HubbleSite gallery, we had seen some of the incredible images collected by Hubble since its launch in 1990. Dr. Christian shared with us that she had previously been tasked with trying to help choose which objects in space the Hubble Telescope would capture for each year, as there were a limited number of images her team would be able to process and study. She said it was one of the toughest things she’s had to do because of the amount of amazing pictures it has taken. It’s provided images of planets, comets, galaxies, and so much more so it was hard to pick just one specific thing.

Not all of the questions related directly to being an astronomer. One of those asked was “Do you get nervous when you start something new and do you worry that it won’t turn out the way that you want?” Dr. Christian answered by talking about how she really enjoys trying new things. She mentioned how she always likes when something turns out exactly the way that you hoped it would but sometimes when it doesn’t, you learn something that you never expected to.

We learned an incredible amount from Dr. Carol Christian during our call. If the goal is to get students excited about learning, she definitely helped in achieving that goal. Even after the call had ended, students were still asking questions, wanting to learn even more about Hubble and the universe. They also kept saying how much they loved getting to talk to Dr. Christian and that they couldn’t wait to use Skype again.

Skype in the Classroom has taken us across the United States, four other continents, and now into space! Skype has truly helped us to break down the walls of our classroom to help make our learning global. As educators, we always look to connect students to the concepts we’re learning. Skype in the classroom and Dr. Carol Christian provided us with an opportunity that the students won’t ever forget and will help make our unit on space even more meaningful.
