This one requires some explaining. MCI, which in 1987 was a long-distance carrier, noticed that there were shenanigans going on at North Texas State University, wherein — let me see if I can remember this — people had long distance codes that they could use to call long distance. It's so funny now thinking about this, since when was the last time anyone worried about the cost of calling long distance? Anyway, people were collecting and handing out these codes. The thing is, typical of college student ignorance, it never occurred to us (oops, did I say "us?") that someone might be, you know, keeping track of these codes and looking at who is using them on their dorm telephones. Duh. Here's a great blog-post I found that explains this in detail. With a picture of the guy's phone bill.
So imagine the surprise of this college freshman when the phone rings one day and it's the dean of students inviting me to his office to discuss the matter. I don't know what happened — I guess I had to pay the fees or something — but in the end it was embarrassing and I felt bad. So, I drew a comic strip lampooning the whole affair. Ahhh, the days before the internet.
