Pizza modo mio

In his book, John Lanzafame starts with the basics – pizza dough and variations including gluten free dough. There are a variety of sauce recipes before we get to the pizzas. The first section of recipes are traditional pizzas like the ‘Margherita’ and ‘pepperoni’ which are presented using fresh ingredients along with John’s interpretation, after all the book is modo mio (my way). Next are some of John’s own recipes for pizza, pizza pies and calzone. There are recipes for a children’s menu, which could easily double as hors d'oeuvre or a savoury snack and some interesting dessert pizzas. Desert pizzas are made with either a traditional base or a sweet pizza dough and with recipes like banana split, cherry and almond or peaches and cream there are some great combinations to match your menu and tastes.

Italian food safari
Maeve O’Meara with Guy Grossi

A wonderfully illustrated book with a range of recipes and an introduction to each section which offers background to regional flavours, traditions and ingredients. This book spans a range of Italian cookery offering recipes of brought to Australia from Italy. There are sections on preserving, bread and pizza and pasta along with traditional ‘home cooking’, fish, cheese and special meals for celebrations. Once again there is a selection of desserts or sweets like ricotta cheesecake and the traditional end of meal coffee, which includes Tiramisu.

Anna Gare

Anna has been a judge on Junior MasterChef Australia, before that she had a series of television cook roles and a catering business in Perth. When growing up in Fremantle, Anna was inspired by the food of the local Italian community, which inspires some of her cooking. The recipes in this collection are great for entertaining at home and cover a wide variety of culinary backgrounds. This is a great book for browsing through for ideas. The recipes are in no particular order and jump from page to page with delights like minestrone verde, overnight muffins, sang choy bow to luscious lasagne.

A message for Mobile Library users

If you are a Mobile Library customer, do you sometimes wish that you had received the notice about picking up an ordered book before the Mobile Library had left your pickup stop?

The notice in your post box seems to arrive just after the Mobile Library has been in town or after you have visited the Library......

Well, here’s something that might fix the problem.... we now can send an SMS to your mobile phone as soon as the item is available for you on the Mobile Library. You get the notice much quicker than waiting for the snail mail version and you probably won’t have to wait another week before you can have your item.

So if you want to beat the snail mail (and be more environmentally friendly at the same time), give us a ring on 50188498 or just call in to the Mobile Library to update us with your Mobile phone number details.

Storytime fun @ Mildura

I had lots of fun at the first story time of 2012 this morning. We walked through the jungle and found lots of animals, sang about the wheels on the bus, as well as finding a hug for a bear named Douglas.

Preschool Story time is held every Wednesday morning @ 10:15am in the Mildura library.

Review: Katie Up and Down the Hall

A book I read recently is a true story titled 'Katie Up and Down the Hall' by Glenn Plaskin. It is a lovely story and will hold particular interest for animal lovers – especially people who bond and connect with dogs.
The story is about Katie – a cocker spaniel puppy who goes to live in a high rise building in Lower Manhattan. She befriends all the people who live off the hallway where she lives. The various apartment dwellers become a surrogate family for her and her devoted owner. The story travels through the struggles and triumphs experienced by the people as they live their lives. Part of the story is told during the drama and trauma that they and everybody else experienced on 11 September and how it impacted on the lives of Katie, her owner and their extended family.

Stay or Swim?

You’re coasting along, enjoying the sunrise, the fresh salt air, the freedom of seeing nothing but horizon. The next thing you know you’re fighting for air on the wrong side of an upturned yacht. The good thing is you all survive – now you’re all perched atop the destroyed hull. Out of all radio range, flight paths and with the closest land kilometers away…do you stay or swim?

That’s the dilemma that faces a crew of five when the yacht they are traveling on hits a reef and capsizes off the Great Barrier Reef. The have to make the decision – stay on the boat, being pulled out to sea, likely to sink at any moment, or swim in the general direction of a small island they can’t see.

Deciding to swim, the group starts to swim for land, when a fin breaks the surface and they realise they are being stalked by a fourteen foot great white shark.

Will any of them make it or will the sea just take what it wants?

In Australia, we have a knack for making low budget horror films that involve friends holidaying in idyllic places and giant predatory animals wanting to eat them. Check out Rogue or Black Water (from the same director). The Reef is no different, with the opening scenes capturing the beauty of the ocean, all while making you forget the hidden dangers that lie beneath.

The cinematography was quite beautiful in this film; you can almost forget there’s a great white getting ready to eat an arm or two! Sometimes with these types of horror/thrillers – I’m looking at you Open Water – the acting is forgotten in favor of revving up the action. Not so here, before the boat capsizes we get a chance to meet all five characters, get a feel for them as people.

The Reef is a nail biting dip into the ocean. From the first ‘What was that?’ to the final closing moments of the film, the tension grabs and doesn’t let up. I finished watching the film from the safety of my kitchen, (less scary then the lounge room!) But still close enough to yell at the TV – Seriously people, there’s a giant shark trying to eat you - why are you all swimming so slowly!!

Favorite line of the movie… Warren is staring at Suzie dressed in a wet suit…

”What?” asks Suzie.

“You look like a seal. Sharks love seals.”

Review: The Opal Desert by Di Morrissey

Kerrie, in her 40s, has just lost her famous sculptor husband who had been the centre of her existence and for whom she sacrificed her own art career. Now she needs to find the courage to rekindle her dreams.

Shirley, approaching 80, believes she was betrayed by her lover many years ago and has retreated from the world, becoming a recluse living in an underground dugout. Her new friends cause her to reassess what she’s done with her life.

Anna, 20, has a promising athletic career but is torn between the commitment to her sport, which could carry her to the Olympics, and the other challenges in her life. Will running away solve her problems?

The friendship that develops between these three women who meet in the strangely beautiful but desolate landscape of Opal Lake helps them deal with the next stage of their lives.

Di Morrissey is a fantastic author who brings her characters alive through her words. Her work is usually based on and about Australia and Australians. I hope you will enjoy her latest novel.

Review: Black Swan

I watched this film twice and it still left me thinking about the storyline, as it was a little bizarre and confusing. Some viewers may think that it’s difficult to follow.

The story is centred on a young ballet dancer named Nina. Nina is consumed with dance and strives to be perfect. She lives with her controlling mother who is her biggest supporter, although I’m not sure whether she’s out to help or hinder Nina’s career.

Nina after years of always being second has been selected to replace the prima ballerina in the new season of Swan Lake. Nina plays the white swan easily with her gracefulness and innocence but needs to become crafty, deceitful and sensual to represent the Black Swan.

Lily a new dancer and Nina’s understudy begin a twisted friendship of rivalry. Lily is in competition for the role and takes Nina on a journey of destruction. As time goes on Nina begins to go crazy with paranoia while becoming more in touch with her dark side.

The story continues on with Nina suffering hallucinations and leaves you guessing as to what’s actually happening and what’s a figment of her imagination.

Children’s Week will be celebrated from 22 to 30 October 2011, with Universal Children’s Day on Wednesday 26 October 2011.

Children’s Week is a national program recognising the talents, skills, achievements and rights of young people. It is based on the articles expressed in the United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child, highlighting play, wellbeing and protection.
During Children's Week organisations across the county focus community attention on the needs and achievements of children and young people as they thrive, learn and grow. Programs are based around the theme of A Caring World Shares.
Your public library is no exception when it comes to supporting families in their role to nurture young people of all ages. With the programs we offer we are bringing families together to share in the joy of reading, while developing a love of sharing literacy and language. These are such important skills in being able to communicate and thrive in today’s world.

Mobile Library

A lot of people may know about the Mobile Library but there may still be some people out there that don’t know about us.

The Mobile Library is a semi trailer that goes around to the outer areas of the Mildura Rural City Council to meet the needs of people in those towns. We are a weekly service.

There are about 6 thousand items on the Mobile that people can brows from. We have the same variety of items as the Mildura Library.

Our time table for the week is

Review: Stories I only tell my friends

I must confess the real reason why I wanted to read this book was as a child of the 80’s, I had a huge crush on Rob Lowe. After seeing him in the movie “The Outsiders” I was hooked. This autobiography by Rob Lowe called “Stories I only tell my friends” was a step back in time for me. It was great to hear how he became such a star of the 1980’s. Rob chronicles his experiences as a painfully misunderstood child actor from Ohio to his unrelenting pursuit of a career in Hollywood.

He mentions a lot of his friends who we all know. Names such as Charlie Sheen, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillion and so on. His book also focused on the wild excesses that marked the 1980’s, leading to his quest for family and sobriety.

It’s a very easy read. The 306 pages fly by when we are busy reminiscing!

ABC Open - The Moment Behind the Photo.

Regular workshops for a new ABC Open project called The Moment Behind the Photo will be held at Mildura Library as well as Red Cliffs Resource Centre.

These workshops will be about finding a great personal photo from your collection and recording the story behind it which will then be put together into a video and up loaded to the internet to share with the rest of Australia.

This project is a great way to tell local stories – about history, about who we are and where we come from and also an opportunity to have some fun.
