My experience working with part time developers has been a mix of both good and bad. A little bit on the bad side i would say. The issue is, as you can guess, with the comittment. They might start saying yes to other projects during the course of working on your project. And here when things can get vary.

Or maybe you started working with them when they were already on another project but they promised you that your work wouldn’t get affected. And for the first few weeks things were normal (or maybe because its the honemoon phase), and then its later when deadlines are missed and even meetings are not attended you start writing a blog post about it out of frustration. (yup thats what happening right now)

I wish developers could be more ethical and moral here. I wish they could say NO more often. I wish they didn’t commit to my projects instead let someone else work on it who is available to work. I am in a similar positin now and I am wondering what should be done to make things go back to normal?

Should I warn the developer one more time? Because I already did. or should i not waste my time for second warnings and just replace him with another developer who can commit and respects deadlines. Or should i hire an additonal developer for support. This way if the original developer lags somewhere the newer developer can fill in the gaps. And eventually if the first developer keeps giving me hard time, the other is always there to replace him.

Well I should start posting for this hire. Or simply go to upwork and find someone experienced there.

We have tried Odoo and its good. It runs on windows too as a server ( we ran it on Ubuntu) and the interface is through web. Backend is written in Python. Frontend modifications can be done through XML after turning on the developer mode. But beware the online documentation in forums is not that useful. Actually its known that its the worst open source project when it comes to community support.. but there are lots of paid plugins that helped us. Later we moved to Zoho One because as a business owner I couldn’t run the odoo mobile app with the community version which led me compare the odoo enterprise version with Zoho One. I was impressed by zoho’s pricing and the level of customisation they offer with their enterprise apps. So yeah thats a bit of my experience hoping it might help you or others.
The post Why I moved to Zoho from Odoo first appeared on Ahmad Mushtaq's Blog.

So I wanted to access my CRM (Odoo ERP) through my mobile phone as its very convenient to access client documents and see whats pending when you are waiting in the traffic or for the doctor’s appointment. The thing is that Odoo (formerly OpenERP) is not mobile friendly by default (At least thats still the case with v11)

So I decided to install the awesome Web Responsive Module . I am quite impressed with the work. It totally made my ERP mobile friendly as I have been trying for ages to find the perfect mobile app to access my CRM.

But nothing in the software world comes easy (both properietary and open source) . I started facing issues whenever I opened any client opporuntity from the CRM. I was receiving the following error message from Odoo:

Error: QWeb2: Template 'web_responsive.MenuStatusbarButtons' not found

The Solution

Fortunately the problem can be easily solved by just restarting the odoo service on your server.

On my ubuntu server I used the following command:

sudo service odoo11 restart

Your’s might be different command based on your installation.

I wonder what could be the reason behind this? Is Odoo not able to detect something and it does when we restart the service? If that is the case then why can’t it simply restart itself once any new module is installed? (or will it be more damaging if there is any current work in progress?) Would love to hear what you have to say on this?
The post How to solve odoo v11-web_responsive.MenuStatusbarButtons error? first appeared on Ahmad Mushtaq's Blog.

So you have created the perfect landing page for your campaign and now its time to share the link with your media buying executive. Just like every other landing page you have the form on the page with all the standard fields such as the first name, last name, email and maybe also the mobile number, their location, the product they are intertested in. Ready to share it with the world? Hold your horses! Is your contact form optimized for higher conversion?

Things to consider for higher conversion rate

There are various things you should consider before you publish that landing page. Most importantly you need to understand what is the purpose of the campaign. Is it to collect Marketing Qualified Leads (MQLs) or Sales Qualified Leads (SQL)?

What is a MQL?

A marketing qualitified lead is a person who is not yet ready to buy your product or service but is or might be interested in your industry. As the intent of buying is very low, the motivation to share their information will be very less. Example could be you maintaining a blog about your industry and someones wants to remain updated regarding that domain. Such a person might want to share their name and email with you but not their mobile numner. So it doesn’t make sense to ask them for more details other than the email and name.

What is SQL?

A sales qualified lead is someone who is not only interested but also ready to buy your product or service. As the intent to buy is high, their motivation to share more information will be more than a MQL. So it would make sense to show them a full contact form with mobile number and other sales related questions so that you can forward such leads the Sales Team

So what to do with the MQLs?

Marketing Qualified Leads need to be nurtured through different methods. This is a term used heavily in marketing domain as Leads Nurturing. I will write about this in a different post . Stay tuned
The post How many fields should you have on a Lead form? first appeared on Ahmad Mushtaq's Blog.

Webmin login will for some unknown reasons take me to the first website/virtual host.

Since I am using Webmin for quite a time now and as it happens with every open-source tool, you come across something that frustrates you because you remember you didn’t change anything but later you find out that it was you who did that little change and now you are snatching your hair in order to find out what went wrong.

Using open-source software like Virtualmin is both satisfying and troublesome. Why troublesome? well because support is all depended on the community and you have to be lucky that others have also faced the same or similar issue. Your second option is to post it in the forums or try out different ways yourself to dig out the root cause of the issue.

To be honest I am pretty lazy when it comes to posting to forums. Or maybe I hate the wait. So I went with the only option I had, find out myself.

Turns out the problem was with Cloudflare messing with the LetsEncrypt SSL. So if you are behind Cloudflare, try changing the cloud icons to grey for the record that is responsible for the website login. (which means Cloudflare won’t work).

Alternatively, you can turn off SSL for the whole domain. or disable SSL just for that particular record using page rules.
The post Apache Reverse Proxy for Webmin login takes to the default website first appeared on Ahmad Mushtaq's Blog.

Earlier this month, the schedule for rolling out WordPress 5.0 (including Gutenberg – the new block editor) was announced: https://make.wordpress.org/core/2018/10/03/proposed-wordpress-5-0-scope-and-schedule/

Even though Gutenberg will be officially part of WordPress in version 5.0, you can still download it as a plugin and start using it. (This post is written using Gutenberg editor ;-))

The numerous benefits of using Gutenberg for the following are the ones that I like the most:
Instead of editing through inline text you now use blocks.

You can easily drag and drop blocks from one place to another in a wordpress post.

Third party services have integration with guttenberg, for instance when I copied the meetup link in this post it automatically became a widget.

Works with almost any theme.

We will be talking about Gutenberg and wordpress 5.0 in the upcoming meetup. If you want to learn and need help using Gutenberg, this would be the perfect opportunity. So don’t forget to register using the below:

If you issue the following command in terminal:

php --i | grep ini

This will show you the loaded pho configuration file. My output was this:

Loaded Configuration File:         /usr/local/etc/php/5.6/php.ini

But when I upgraded my MacOS from El Capitan to Sierra, updating the above file didn’t reflect any change on my development websites. WordPress was still showing 2 MB even though I was using the following:

upload_max_filesize = 64M
post_max_size = 64M
max_execution_time = 300

After googling here and there, I found a solution. Thanks to Gergely on stackoverflow here.

First use phpinfo to find out the current loaded file.

You would see:

Loaded Configuration File  None

now open your terminal:

cp /etc/php.in.default /etc/php.ini

Thats it. Make any change to the newly copied file and it would update in the webserver without any issues
