hi monette,
i was a participant in march 2010 seminar and gained much needed information in setting up a laundry shop. your number advise is to find a perfect or suitable location wherein it is the life blood of the business. i found a location which could cater to household and students. the shop is under construction and hopefully we can open in 2 weeks time. can you give me some tips or advise on what marketing strategies i can offer to my prospective clients. since the competition is very stiff in the area i need to introduce promotions and discounts. i need to go out and seek for customers and not just sit in my shop and wait for someone to come in.
i also want to know if the association/organization of laundry shop that you are a member in is still open?
thank you and more power.

Edgar

Hi!

Thank goodness you learned a lot from the seminar. Gives me inspiration to teach and support students more.
We have several marketing strategies we can use to introduce the business. Some are giving fliers, putting up big very visible tarpaulin, 5 plus 1 promo, (not 4 plus one) and lastly giving out laundry bags with your laundry name printed on it..

By the way, when you said life blood of the business, I can’t help to think it’s contradicting to stiff competition. I would have wanted you to get a location where there is not much competitor so that introducing the business to the area would have been easier. Nevertheless, it’s good that you have the guts to start right on..

Yes, club exists and it won’t dissolve for as long as I’m here.

Good luck! and please give me good news soon!

Based on experience, no. I bought a front load washer and it’s been operating since I bought it. No major repair encountered since.

2. sabi mo sa seminar pag top load for example 10 kg yung capacity, 5kg dun eh water tapos 5kg dun yung mga damit, parang kc sobrang laki nun tub para maging 5 kg lng yung mga damit na pwedeng ilagay.tlga bang ganun? I said, a 10.5 kg top load washer can only load 7 kg clothes since we have to consider weight of water although majority of suppliers claim the 10.5 kg capacity is dry weight.

4)2 heavy duty flat iron and 2 board.
5)tables for folding
6) 25 litters heavy duty water pump
7) 5,000 litters water storage tank
Office tables and chairs
9) hampers and laundry bags
10)Hanging areas for finish pressed clothes 3 areas
11)Wood shelves
12)1 Portable colored Television
13) 1 T.V monitor and 2units camera for inside and out of the shop
14) All laundry supplies
15) Office supplies
16) 1 Unit Pedicab for pick up and delivery
17) 1 unit Heavy duty weighing scale 30 kilo grams
18) counter table on reception
19) Panther Industrial Transformer
20) Heavy duty safety regulator for LPG installation
21) Fire distinguisher
22) 2 exhaust fan
23) 2 Industrial wall fan
24) The rights of the business is the most important plus all our existing clients.
25) 5 professional working staff’s knows all around laundry work.
The price is 1.7M still negotiable and according to the owner it earns 30-36thou a week.
To be honest, i have 0 knowledge on laundry business but willing to take a risk.
Hoping to get tips and opinions from you guys specially to Miss Etten.

Hi Poly.Xtian,

From the data you gave me, I can easily say the price is expensive considering the machines given. If I may ask, are these industrial machines? Because if not, then they are way tooooo expensive. one brand new industrial washer costs only about 280k at 13 kilogram capacity.

If I were to quote the business:

4 units washer (has to be industrial) - 400k
6 dryers (has to be industrial)- 450k
1 unit steam press - 5k
2 heavy duty steam press - 1k
2 Tables for folding- 5k
1 water pump- 5k
1 water tank- 5k
Office tables and chairs- 5k
Hampers and laundry bags- 5k
Pedicab - 4k
1 unit weighing scale- 1k
Counter table- 1k
Transformer - 10k
Industrial fans- 4k

All the rest can be omitted or can be bought at a very minimal fee. Rights of the business is how much? Clients are all corporate I suppose? They have existing contract or none? These are all the things you have to take into consideration. If all things are in order, with NET INCOME of 120k a month, then I would consider buying it at 1M only if the machines are industrial, otherwise if they’re only household commercial, then that is way too expensive. Critical here are the machines and the clients. There is nothing wrong taking risk, only it has to be CALCULATED.

Good luck!

Simple question Ms. Etten, for wash, dry , press, what do you usually do? Do u place the clothes one by one on a hanger and use dry clean plastic or just fold them and place on a regular plastic? Thanks

Hi bnc,

If you remember, my washing machine is 6.5 kg front load. It wont fit a queen or a king size comforter. If you plan on accepting those items, you better get a bigger washing machine. We don’t do manual rinsing, machines are usually fully automatic, so it’s either doulble the times you wash a foul smelling clothes or better yet, soak it overnight.

FOR WASH DRY PRESS:

We normally ask for hangers, or charge hangers to the customer. It really depends on their preference, whether they want it hanged or folded.

No, for as long as the clothes and comforters are washed properly and well cleaned. And when hung dried, it should be provided with enough space for the air to circulate. You cut on electric bill, you help the environment too.

Hi, Ms. Etten. You recommended in this thread that rust stain removal should be a chargeable service. In this case, how should this be charged? Per spot? Per laundry item? How about blood stain removal, make-up, and grease/oil?

All stain removals are charged per spot depending on the size of the stain. This is because stains are done on a separate activity and not on the same time as the laundry. It also involves use of different chemicals depending on the type of stain. Now it’s in your discretion what amount should be charged.

we are planning to put a laundry business with my god father we agreed to be partners.
i will be the one to manage the whole thing and he will provide the funds in other words he will not be able to help me running this business since he is currently employed.
i was afraid to ask him how would the sharing would be.
i mean the funds since ill be the one to look after and manage the business from construction til the whole process of the laundry business.do i still need to put some money as my share?
I’m just a bit confused since we are partners the business name registration will be under his name also.
hope you can help enlighten me on this..
thank you and God bless

Hi Just,

Thank you for reading my blog. I haven’t read your email or I may have possibly missed it.

Anyway as for your question, before you start a business with your Ninong, set the terms and conditions first. You cannot start venturing into something, put effort into it not knowing what’s in for you too. Your Ninong will definitely expect something for his investment, but you also have to get your share. If you’re hesitant or shy in asking, how can you discuss with him details later? Given the fact that registration is under his name, you have no control over the business and therefore anytime he wants you out, he can do so with you having nothing to say. You better study your options or you might end up having differences with him. Or better yet, if you have money to pitch in your share of the investment, then do so. Just set aside salary for looking after the business.

Good luck!
