At the end of every football season, geeks like me rush to the SEC’s statistical leaders lists. Usually we go straight to the passing numbers.

When it came to quarterbacks in the SEC this year, Ryan Mallett (3,422), Stephen Garcia (2,733), Jonathan Crompton (2,565), Jevan Snead (2,464) and Joe Cox (2,426) were the yardage leaders.

The leaders in touchdown passes were Mallett (29), Crompton (26), Cox (22), Chris Todd (21) and Snead (20).

That’s all well and good, but how did the SEC’s quarterbacks fare against conference competition only?

The SEC is known for having the best defenses in the land, so which QBs were the statistical leaders through the league’s 64-game regular season?

We’ve done the math and below you’ll find the answers, based upon total yards. We only include those passers who threw for more than 1,000 yards in SEC games… and there were nine of them.

We list each man’s completions, pass attempts, interceptions, total passing yards, touchdown passes, completion percentage, and the telling “Yards Per Pass Attempt” which is often a more accurate gauge of success than the bulkier QB pass efficiency rating.

QUARTERBACKS VS SEC OPPONENTS ONLY

Observations:

* When it comes to passing, Mallett is the SEC’s standard-bearer. He threw for more yards than anyone else, had an excellent 8.04 YPPA despite throwing the ball so much, and his TD-INT ratio was an outstanding 16-5. But there was one obvious flaw in Mallett’s game… and it’s something pro scouts will notice if he comes out: He has to improve his overall accuracy. A 51.1% completion percentage in SEC games will be a red flag to pro scouts.

* Garcia threw a lot of passes and his YPPA suffered for it. His 11-7 TD-INT ratio was also less than the 2-1 that most coaches look for. That said, Carolina’s QB did show major signs of improvement in 2009 and stands to be the most experienced passer in the SEC East next year. Could next year be a breakout year for Garcia?

* If you take away his interceptions — and you can’t — Georgia’s Cox had one of the best seasons in the SEC. His YPPA was the best in the league (aided by AJ Green) and his completion percentage was very good. Ironically, it seems that when Cox would miss, he would miss right into the arms of an opposing defensive back. But his season from a purely statistical standpoint was actually a pretty good one.

* If before the season I had projected Crompton and Snead to have their numbers — only flip-flopped — many folks would have believed it. But by year’s end, it was Crompton who had the higher completion percentage and the 14-6 TD-INT ratio. Meanwhile, Snead was the only QB on the list to throw more interceptions in SEC play (15) than touchdowns (10).

As the coaching merry-go-round speeds up, I wanted to bring you the latest on several coaches with SEC ties. Some we’ve already posted, some we haven’t.

Just wanted to put it all together in one post. Here they are in alphabetical order:

Rodney Garner

2009 team — Georgia
2009 position — Defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator

Scuttlebutt — There are several rumors out of Athens that the long-time Mark Richt aide wanted to be named the new defensive coordinator when Richt jettisoned Willie Martinez and two other coaches last week. Lane Kiffin made a push for Garner last year, but the UGA assistant elected to stay in Athens and made it clear that some relationships are worth more than money. But with apparently no promotion in the cards for him, many wonder if “Garner’s gone” as former Dawg David Pollack tweeted last week.” With two holes on the Vols’ staff currently, Garner might be interested in returning to Knoxville, where he once recruiting Jamal Lewis and Deon Grant. Question is: What position would he coach and could Tennessee afford him?

Eddie Gran
2009 team — Tennessee
2009 position — Running backs coach and special teams coach

Scuttlebutt — While there’s been no official announcement from Florida State, multiple reports say that Gran is leaving his $190,000 job in Knoxville for what might be a $300,000 gig in Tallahassee. It was believed Gran would join Tommy Tuberville’s staff if the former Auburn coach landed a job this offseason, but that hasn’t happened yet. Gran has a tremendous track record of recruiting in Florida. Kiffin has said that he will take his own sweet time to replace any departing assistants. (Which means — like Georgia — UT will go into their bowl game with graduate assistants holding some duties.)

Ellis Johnson
2009 team — South Carolina
2009 position — Assistant head coach in charge of defense and linebackers coach

Scuttlebutt — It seems there’s more smoke than fire with early rumors of Georgia making a run at Johnson. More likely, UGA will chase Smart from Alabama, rather than Johnson, who is a South Carolina native married to a Columbia native. Money might be a factor, but it would be hard to give Johnson a higher rank than the one he currently holds with Carolina.

DJ McCarthy
2009 team — LSU
2009 position — Receivers coach

Scuttlebutt — Rumors continue to swirl that McCarthy will depart Baton Rouge one way or the other. Initially, it was believed that McCarthy might join Larry Porter’s new staff at Memphis. Then came word that LSU was looking into possible NCAA violations involving one assistant coach and one player who did not suit up for the Tigers this year. On Friday, the LSU student newspaper reported that a source had told them that McCarthy had given financial assistance to juco transfer Akiem Hicks. There are rumors that Les Miles is already speaking to former LSU and current Buffalo Bills assistant Tyke Tolbert about his receivers coach position.

Ed Orgeron
2009 team — Tennessee
2009 position — Associate head coach, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator

Scuttlebutt — There is speculation that Pete Carroll might want to come after his old assistant, name him Southern Cal’s defensive coordinator, and allow him to rebuild the Trojans once proud D. But that’s not even a rumor at this point… just speculation.

Larry Porter
2009 team — LSU
2009 position — Running backs coach

Scuttlebutt — There’s no scuttle and no butt to this one, it’s a done deal. Porter has been named the head coach at Memphis, his alma mater.

Willy Robinson
2009 team — Arkansas
2009 position — Defensive coordinator and secondary coach

Scuttlebutt — There are no rumors to report, only the speculation that Bobby Petrino might make a move on the defensive side of the ball considering just how poorly the Razorbacks’ defense has been in two years under Robinson. If he was going to make a switch, however, it would seem that the time to announce such a move would have been this past week. It looks like Petrino’s concern is getting better players for his defensive coaches to work with.

Kirby Smart
2009 team — Alabama
2009 position — Defensive coordinator and secondary coach

Scuttlebutt — Florida State was believed to be interested in talking to Smart about their defensive coordinator position, but it now appears that Georgia’s Richt will make a strong push for him. Landing Smart would in theory strengthen the Bulldogs and weaken conference rival Alabama. (Of course, most folks believe Nick Saban is the man that makes the Bama defense go.) Two other notes to remember: Smart graduated from Georgia in 1999 and he also coached the Bulldogs’ running backs in 2005.

Charlie Strong
2009 team — Florida
2009 position — Defensive coordinator

Scuttlebutt — Strong has already had an interview with Louisville AD Tom Jurich. He was also expected to speak with him again today by phone. Jurich said of Strong “We’ve got a little more work to do. I know Florida wants to keep him.” According to sources close to the U of L program, we believe this race can be called. If Strong wants the job, it’s his.

Sal Sunseri
2009 team — Alabama
2009 position — Linebackers coach

Scuttlebutt — It is believed that Sunseri has passed Smart on Florida State’s list of possible replacements for retiring defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews. If Sunseri leaves for Florida State and Smart leaves for Georgia, Saban would have to do some serious reshuffling on his defensive coaching staff. Sunseri joined Saban’s staff last year as a replacement for Lance Thompson, who departed for Tennessee.

Frank Wilson
2009 team – Tennessee
2009 position — Receivers coach

Scuttlebutt — A native of New Orleans, Wilson is on the move again. He joined Tennessee’s staff just weeks after accepting the recruiting coordinator position at Mississippi State last year. He will apparently handle those recruiting coordinator duties in Baton Rouge as well, marking his third SEC job in just over one year. He is expected to handle the duties of running backs coach, too, filling the void left by Porter.

Phillip Fulmer and Tommy Tuberville
2009 team — none
2009 position — on the couch

Scuttlebutt — There’s been surprisingly little word about either coach. Tuberville has been named a candidate at Virginia and is viewed as a potential fallback candidate at Louisville if Strong says no. His name was also thrown out in connection with the defensive coordinator position at Georgia, but it’s awfully hard to imagine a former head coach at Ole Miss and Auburn would step down the ladder like that. As for Fulmer, it is believed he put in a phone call (that lasted just 30 minutes) to Louisville’s AD last week. Also, a columnist for The Chicago Sun Times poked fun at reports that the former Tennessee coach has been pushing for the Notre Dame job. His name — like Tuberville’s — has been thrown out just barely in connection with the opening at Kansas.

Keep this in mind: if Brian Kelly leaves Cincinnati for Notre Dame, would Fulmer or Tuberville be interested in taking over a program that does have some talent, plays in the soft Big East and resides in the fertile recruiting grounds of Ohio? Would Cincinnati want to go in either of their directions?

Here’s an early breakdown (from several different angles) of the SEC’s bowl matchups. All times are Eastern:

Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl
Nashville, TN
Sunday, 12/27, 8:30pm
ESPN
Kentucky (7-5) vs Clemson (8-5)

TV Draw: It’s the only college game of the night, so that should help. But this isn’t exactly a dream matchup for television.

Fan Excitement: UK will be bowling against Clemson for the second time since 2006, in Nashville for the third time in four years, and in Tennessee for the fourth straight year. So, I don’t think Cat fans will be too gung-ho over this one.

Matchup Thoughts: I think Kentucky’s run defense will have a hard time with CJ Spiller — who might be the most dynamic player in the country. I think Clemson could have some problems with Randall Cobb — one of the most dynamic players in the SEC.

First-Blush Advantage: Clemson

Advocare Independence Bowl
Shreveport, LA
Monday, 12/28, 5:00pm
ESPN2
Georgia (7-5) vs Texas A&M (6-6)

TV Draw: Again, this is the only bowl game of the day. It’s also a matchup of two traditionally strong programs. It could garner some national interest.

Fan Excitement: Dawg fans were barking over a disappointing season. Going to Shreveport won’t change their minds. Maybe playing against a traditional power (though not recently) will charge them up a bit.

Matchup Thoughts: A&M’s offense lit up Texas’ defense. What might they do against a UGA defense coached by… by… by? Then again, I expect the Dawgs to have their way with a porous Aggie defense, too.

First-Blush Advantage: Georgia

Chick-fil-A Bowl
Atlanta, GA
Thursday, 12/31, 7:30pm
ESPN
Tennessee (7-5) vs Virginia Tech (9-3)

TV Draw: This one will only be opposite Minnesota and Iowa State. No worries there. It also features a traditionally strong TV draw in Tennessee going against one of the nation’s better teams. If the Vols can make it a game this one will get a lot of eyeballs.

Fan Excitement: Probably better than if UT had reached the Outback Bowl. Atlanta is a short trip and while this isn’t the intersectional matchup that TV wonks crave, it is a regional affair that Vol and Hokie fans have been wanting to see.

Matchup Thoughts: The key question in this game is as follows… with a month to prepare, can Monte Kiffin get his 7-5 Vol defense ready for a Tech offense that got rolling late? The Hokies have a deeper roster, but can UT’s staff (depending on who’s left on it) find a way to coach away some matchup issues?

First-Blush Advantage: Virginia Tech

Outback Bowl
Tampa, FL
Friday, 1/1, 11:00am
ESPN
Auburn (7-5) vs Northwestern (8-4)

TV Draw: It’s the first bowl of the day. If it’s a good game, eyes will stick. If not, folks will be off to other “big name” games. At least the Outback folks will grab the Chicago TV market.

Fan Excitement: If anyone ever needed proof that bowl selections are all about travel, it’s this game. Clearly, the Outback didn’t think fans of Tennessee and Wisconsin (who had a better record than Northwestern) would travel back to Tampa after their matchup just two years ago. So, they took Auburn from the West (a fanbase that hadn’t been in more than a decade) and Northwestern (hoping that snowbirds will travel). Oddly enough, the passed-over fans of Tennessee and Wisconsin will probably be more excited about their matchups (UT versus Virginia Tech and Wisconsin versus Miami) than AU fans will be about theirs. At least they get a good travel destination.

Matchup Thoughts: When the SEC meets the Big Ten, there’s usually a pretty big speed advantage for the team from the South. That should be the case again. But this Northwestern team was playing its best football at the end of the season, whereas Auburn finished 2-5. Still, the Wildcats haven’t won a bowl game since 1949.

First-Blush Advantage: Auburn. Barely.

Capital One Bowl
Orlando, FL
Friday, 1/1, 1:00pm
ABC
LSU (9-3) vs Penn State (10-2)

TV Draw: This would have been a TV monster. But now a Florida State-West Virginia Gator (Bowden) Bowl might siphon off a few viewers. Still this is one of the bowl season’s best games.

Fan Excitement: Tiger fans weren’t happy with Les Miles this year. In fact, I believe Miles had better get LSU back to a BCS bowl game next year or else he could be in real trouble. Beating Penn State in the best of the non-BCS bowls would be a good kickoff to 2010. The opponent, the trip to Florida… yeah, I think LSU fans will travel for this one.

Matchup Thoughts: Penn State’s offense looked good with the exception of two games. Against the two toughest foes on their schedule (Iowa and Ohio State) the Nittany Lions mustered a combined 17 points. The Tiger D should be just as tough as those defenses. Question is… can LSU score points when they have the ball?

First-Blush Advantage: LSU

Allstate Sugar Bowl
New Orleans, LA
Friday, 1/1, 8:30pm
Fox
Florida (12-1) vs Cincinnati (12-0)

TV Draw: It’s the only game of the night. It’s Tim Tebow’s final college football game. It might be Brian Kelly’s final game at Cincinnati (if he takes the Notre Dame job and stays at Cincy to coach the bowl). This will be a ratings winner no matter what.

Fan Excitement: Gator fans will travel to New Orleans because it’s New Orleans. But there’s no question that it will be hard for them to get up for this non-national championship game against a traditional no-name school.

Matchup Thoughts: A disappointing season’s end. A trip to a bowl they didn’t want to go to. Half of their team is thinking about life in the NFL. If Florida shows up mentally, they should knock off Cincinnati. But I think it’s a long-shot that they show up mentally. Keep on eye on the Brian Kelly situation, too. If he leaves for Notre Dame or elsewhere, what will that do to the Bearcats’ psyche?

First-Blush Advantage: Cincinnati. Not because of talent, but because of psychological factors. If you disagree, see: Alabama-Utah 2009.

PapaJohns.com Bowl
Birmingham, AL
Saturday, 1/2, 2:00pm
ESPN
South Carolina (7-5) vs Connecticut (7-5)

TV Draw: The International Bowl (South Florida vs Northern Illinois) won’t hurt this game’s viewership. But starting head-to-head against the Cotton Bowl will. Unless Steve Spurrier remains a bigger national draw than I think he is, this will have folks in Carolina and Connecticut watching… but that’s about it. (If Randy Edsall lands a more high-profile gig, that could make this game a bigger draw, too.)

Fan Excitement: USC is back in a bowl after sitting out last bowl season. They finished the year on a good note by whooping Clemson. And next year, they’ll have a veteran team back. If Gamecock fans view this as the first game of 2010, then they might get fired up for it.

Matchup Thoughts: UConn is playing its best ball late. But the Huskies have been winning last-second games against defenses in South Bend and the Big East. They haven’t faced the likes of Carolina’s SEC defense.

First-Blush Advantage: South Carolina.

AT&T Cotton Bowl
Arlington, TX
Saturday, 1/2, 2:00pm
FOX
Ole Miss (8-4) vs Oklahoma State (9-3)

TV Draw: There isn’t a lot of TV competition for this one. It will also be the first Cotton Bowl to be played in the new Cowboys Stadium. It should do quite well if it turns out to be an offensive shootout.

Fan Excitement: Call this the Disappointment Bowl. Both fanbases expected to have Top 10 seasons and BCS berths on their docket for 2009-2010. Instead, the Rebels are heading back to the same bowl for the second year in a row. At least the new stadium is a draw. I think Rebel fans will travel for this one.

Matchup Thoughts: Which Ole Miss team shows up? For that matter, which OSU team shows up? If the Rebels bring their defense, I think Dexter McCluster wins this one for Ole Miss. If the defense that went to Starkville shows up, it’s anybody’s game.

First-Blush Advantage: Ole Miss

AutoZone Liberty Bowl
Memphis, TN
Saturday, 1/2, 5:30pm
ESPN
Arkansas (7-5) vs East Carolina (9-4)

TV Draw: Believe me, Liberty Bowl officials were PRAYING that Houston would knock off ECU in the Conference USA title game. That would have created a heckuva TV matchup: big offenses, top quarterbacks. Instead, well, let’s just say this one won’t be “must see TV” for fans around the nation.

Fan Excitement: Hog fans will probably travel very well to nearby Memphis. In fact, they’ll probably take over the town. But trying to get up for ECU? That won’t be easy. This is one of those games where there’s more to lose than to win.

Matchup Thoughts: Skip Holtz had just enough defense to get by Houston’s high-powered offense last week. And Arkansas’ defense isn’t a true SEC defense. In fact, the Hogs were about the worst D in the league all year long. This game could be a lot closer than people might think. If Holtz bolts for another program, that could have a big impact on ECU’s psyche.

First-Blush Advantage: East Carolina. I like UA’s offense a lot, but ECU has had a year to stew over last year’s Liberty Bowl loss to Kentucky. They get the edge. Barely.

Citi BCS National Title Game
Pasadena, CA
Thursday, 1/7, 8:00pm
ABC
Alabama (13-0) vs Texas (13-0)

TV Draw: Two of the biggest names in college football… playing for the national championship… in one of the nation’s most revered stadiums? Jackpot.

Fan Excitement: Bama fans, no doubt, wanted to play Texas over no-name Cincinnati or TCU. After watching the Longhorns struggle against Nebraska, they probably started wanting them even more. The Rose Bowl will be jam-packed with Crimson and Burnt Orange come January 7th.

Matchup Thoughts: Anything can happen on a given day. But Mack Brown is a talent-collector. Nick Saban is America’s best college football coach. If Nebraska and Oklahoma could give Colt McCoy fits, I would expect a full-on conniption from Bama.

First-Blush Advantage: Alabama. Easily.
