I am happy to welcome Drew McGarry, Mrs. G’s sales professional and our newest guest blogger. He attended a Mrs. G’s Lunch and Learn for architects, designers and contractors hosted by U-Line on Modular Refrigeration. Drew will share The Modular 3000 Series, U-Line’s newest innovation which provides the simplest method for adding custom integrated overlay panels or frames and toes-kick  for that truly seamless and simply elegant installation into a standard 24 inch depth cabinet base.

The practice of hiding appliances in kitchen design is nothing new. For years refrigerators and dishwashers have been designed with the ability to accept custom panels with the goal of blending in with the cabinetry.  As manufactures have become more design conscious, some units now feature fully flush applications to integrate almost seamlessly.  One category that hasn’t received quite as much attention until now has been under-counter refrigeration.  It’s rare to find a paneled unit with a fully flush application, and even then there is the unsightly hinge disrupting the cabinet lines and unveiling itself to the world as an appliance.  The new U-Line Modular 3000 Series changes all of this; it gives the consumer the quality and convenience of features previously restricted to full size refrigeration.

The designers at U-Line have developed a series of under-counter units that finally achieve a fully-integrated aesthetic.  First, all units are built in and can be installed to be fully flush with standard 24-inch cabinetry.  To assist with this, front, rear, and toe kick assembly is independently front adjustable, ensuring a perfect fit.  All units in the line feature hidden hinges, helping to further hide the appliance.

In the past, consumers who wanted extra under-counter storage were forced to purchase two units, making the side by side installation nearly impossible. The units simply would not cooperate to be perfectly level.  U-Line now offers the 3000 Series in a variety of 36’’ wide units. Consumer can choose two separately controlled wine or refrigerator zones, or a combination of each.

The new features of the 3000 Series are not only limited to the design.  Fridge units feature crisper drawers, and one-touch preservation settings based upon what is being stored, including a Quick Chill option to lock in freshness after the unsettling trip home from the market.

One of my favorite features about the units is their wide temperature range.  Most under-counter beverage centers can only reach a low temperature around 40°F.  U-Line units can reach temperatures of 34°F, which is terrific for those who like their beer extra cold and want the flexibility to use it as overflow refrigeration when necessary.

The U-Line 3000 Series certainly demands consideration when you’re in the market for a new under-counter product.  The line currently includes wine storage, beverage centers, refrigerators, and combination units.  Ice makers and freezer units are currently in development and should be released shortly.  They are an excellent addition to any kitchen, bar, or media room.  Come in to the showroom today to see these outstanding pieces in person!

A range hood is a fashion statement in kitchen design that expresses the décor values of the homeowner or designer. More than just a pretty face, the range hood performs an important function: it improves the indoor air quality of the kitchen.

It is estimated that the average family of four, produces up to one gallon of grease every year during the process of cooking. A proper kitchen exhaust fan increases indoor air quality by removing leftover cooking contaminants before they mix into you cabinets, walls, drapery, cloths, carpet, etc. The benefits of proper kitchen ventilation is improved indoor air quality, a more comfortable living space and a healthier environment.

Performance

A range hood’s performance is measured in Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM). This is a measure of how much air can be removed from a given space in a single minute. Another way of thinking of CFM is the horsepower of a car. It’s really a measure of performance.

A Sone is an internationally recognized measurement of loudness. This is the level and quality of noise your range hood will emit in a kitchen environment when properly ducted. Examples include:

• Soft whisper : .5 sones
• Normal conversation: 4-5 sone
• Traffic noise: 8 sones
• Refrigerator: 1-2 sones

The power of your cooktop or rangetop is the most important factor in determining your CFM needs. British Thermal Unit (BTU) is the performance measurement of all  range tops and cook tops. Determine the total number of BTUs produced by your range top or cooktop and add 100CFM for every 10,000BTU. If you have a 60,000BTU cook top or rangetop you will need at least 600CFM. This formula is a max estimate and assumes that all burners are being used on high at the same time.

Blowers and Ducting

Many rangehoods come with internal blowers already built into the unit. Others come with optional blowers at an additional cost:

• Internal: Installed directly inside the range hood.
• Inline:  This blower is installed away from the kitchen environment within the line of the ductwork. It can be placed in an attic or closet or crawl space.
• External: Installed on an outside wall or on the roof.

Ducting is the most important component of ventilation. Keep duct runs as short and strait as possible and always use rigid metal ducts. Use as few elbows and transitions as possible as these decrease the efficiency of the range hood.

When using a range hood that is not ducted to the outside environment, selected range hoods come equipped to take a re-circulating kit that allows air to be cleaned through a carbon filter and reintroduced into the kitchen environment.

Capture Area

Another important feature when choosing the proper kitchen hood is capture area. This is the range hood’s required footprint to properly capture and extract airborne pollutants. The width of the hood should be no less than the width of the cooking surface. Best practices for the width of an island hood is 6″ wider than the cooking surface for proper capture of grease and smoke.

The mounting height of the hood plays a critical role in the performance of the hood. We recommend setting the hood at 24”-32” above the cooktop. Many manufacturers set the maximum height in their installation manual.

Ventilation

Efficient ventilation of fumes from the kitchen also depends on the correct use of the products. Mrs. G’s recommends that you turn the rangehood onto the lowest speed setting at least 5 minutes before you start cooking. This will create an updraft that will guide the fumes directly into the stream of air the hood has created. When finished, leave the hood on for 5- 10 minutes or on Delay Off to ensure all contaminants have been exhausted from the kitchen.

It’s no easy process adding thousands of prices to a website, especially since many of the manufacturers have announced price increases effective this January. But we have heard your complaints about the lack of pricing and wanted you to know we were listening.

Miele Dishwashers with pricing

Coming soon, you’ll be able to add items from our website to an online shopping cart and complete your entire purchase online. Of course you won’t lose the excellent customer service we pride ourselves on. A knowledgeable sales staff member will review your order, call to verify that the items in your order fit your needs, and speak with you about setting up your delivery and installation. For now, we can only ship to our local communities in New Jersey, New York and eastern Pennsylvania.

While you will have the option to place an order online, we still encourage you to come in for your appliance purchase, or we’ll be happy to take your order over the phone. Some manufacturers have MAP (minimum advertised price) pricing guidelines that don’t allow us to put our store prices online, meaning that the price on our website isn’t always our best price. Our everyday in-store pricing is often below the MAP pricing. Even worse, some manufacturers don’t allow us to advertise any price at all. For example, you’ll never find a JENN-AIR product with a price on our website unless it’s a floor sample or open box item. The same goes for Wolf, Sub-Zero and GE Monogram.

Plus, there’s nothing like testing the actual appliance out in our live showroom.
