Today I am supposed to educate you on something I am good at, or know a lot about.
Honestly, this is really hard, because I'm not really good at anything, or particularly knowledgeable about any specific topic.

Well, wait. There is one thing I am very good at: self-injury.

Oh yes indeed, I should be Captain of the Self-Injury Squad.
I never fall down stairs, only up them.
I fall up hills too.
I gouged a giant hole in my knee, literally a hole, while learning to ride my bike as a kid.
I fell into a window-well and cracked my head open.
I smashed, face-first, into the narrow side of a door and broke my glasses.
I cut my finger off on a fold-out couch bed.
I broke several toes when I accidentally kicked a table leg instead of the toy I was aiming for.
I broke a rib when a full bottle of beer flew into it. I guess, technically, that it wouldn't be self-injury since someone else threw the bottle. But still, it hurt a ton and plagues me every pregnancy.

So, uh, if you don't want to be the Captain of the Self-Injury Squad, just avoid all of the above incidents and you should be just fine!

Born in the early 80s, turning 30 this year (Golden Birthday yo!). From Owatonna, Minnesota. Worked since age 14. Violinist since the 3rd grade. Average student. Went to college, dropped out. Went to college again, dropped out. Got tattooed and pierced. Joined the Air Force. Loved it. Medical discharge, sucked. Moved to San Antonio, became a badass bartender. Met my future husband. Became a drug user and alcoholic. Ran naked down the beach at 4am and jumped into the ocean. Quit drugs. Got pregnant, moved back to Minnesota. Had a daughter. Got married. Skydived. Moved to Arizona. Had another daughter. Had another daughter. Having another daughter. Started a business. Rocking out in East Mesa. Word.

An unexpected tradition developed over the last three years.
All over the cuteness of a kid in an oversized hat.
I dunno, it just seemed too cute to not continue, ya know?

Plus, I get to see the progression of my photography skills, which is kind of fun, after I'm done telling myself how crappy my old photos are. Ha.

And for the three-year progression (ages 2,3, and 4):

I'm still having issues with my color profiles in Photoshop CS5 since moving it to my new computer. I've tried about ten million things to try to fix it, but it's just not cooperating. The problem is going from Adobe Camera Raw into CS5 itself. The color profiles change completely, which makes it nearly impossible to produce a clean edit in Raw, so if you have any ideas on how to help, I would LOVE to hear them!

Our Story

If this makes you uncomfortable, just pass by this post and remain blissfully unaware of a huge portion of my life. I will not fault you for it, I promise.

I don't share this story. Ever. Well, that's not 100% accurate, because I do say something when asked "how did you two meet". It's not like we woke up one day and found ourselves married with kids.

Now THAT would be one helluva story, huh?

Our story, however, is anything but a fairy tale. It's not even romantic. Really, the only word that describes it is crazy. Absolutely crazy. So I have a lot of trepidation about posting this and I hope you will be understanding rather than judgmental, because I think I've judged myself enough over the years, and will forever live with the consequences of several of my actions.

After my medical discharge from the Air Force in 2006, I decided to make my stay in San Antonio, TX, permanent. I found myself working at the biggest dump of a hole-in-the-wall bar imaginable on the Riverwalk, and I was damn good at slinging drinks and kicking ass when needed. Trust me, it was needed, thank you military training.

The man who owned the bar also owned three other bars around SA, and thus had two managers, each caring for two bars. A couple of weeks after I began working at the Gulch, my manager took a vacation and Rudy had to care for all four bars. I had no idea who he was when he first walked in and behind the bar, but I definitely gave him the stink eye and was a little less than friendly at his intrusion in my space.

Dood, seriously. Stay outta my space.

We didn't even say anything. He went down to the basement, did whatever he was doing and then left. I asked no questions, he gave no explanations. He came back several hours later and finally introduced himself, and we laughed about our earlier encounter and how he was kind of worried that I would tackle him thinking he was some crazy thief or something. Ha.

He ended up spending pretty much the rest of the evening at the bar, and I ended up working from open to close, which was over 12 hours. During that time I talked to one of the regulars and established that Rudy was single. I also confessed that he was pretty damn hot, and so this regular decided to try to get the sparks flowing. It wasn't long before we were both in the basement and I was shotgunning weed off him. It was so sexy to me, and it was the first time I had done that (not smoke weed, but shotgun it).

But it didn't end there. At one point, a chick I used to work with at Rainforest Cafe walked by the huge window outside and decided to press her butt against it. The window SHATTERED. I'm talking about a 10'x10' window here. It was a total disaster, because it was already late at night and there was nothing we could do to fix it. Rudy and I both volunteered to stay there the rest of the night and basically "protect" the bar, because there were many bad individuals downtown. Needless to say, we did more than just talk that night.

After that, we would hook up occasionally, but we never considered ourselves a couple, especially since we were mostly doing it in secret. He was seeing other people and I was "seeing" other people. But when we got together, it was always crazy. We partied. Hard. We drank more alcohol than you could imagine and did more drugs than...well...I don't have a good analogy for that, but we did a lot.

I could easily say I was addicted to Rudy, in a way. I pretty much stalked him. I would text him all the time and call him, and follow him around like some silly lovesick puppy. I wanted him all to myself and I was going to do whatever it took to make sure he was mine and only mine.

I was totally crazy.

Things really changed, however, in May of 2007. I was heading to Spokane, WA, to see my brother graduate college when my car started breaking down in Colorado. Scared of being stranded in the middle of nowhere, I cancelled my trip and headed back to SA. During the trip back I talked frequently to Rudy, and once I got back I realized I had all this time off and nothing to do, so Rudy and I made a spontaneous trip to Port Aransas, TX.

We packed a ton of food and alcohol and bought a tent and pitched it right on the beach, and then we spent five days having what was probably the funnest week of my life. It was Memorial Day weekend and the beach was PACKED with people and the coolest group of super rich farmer/bikers were parked right behind us and welcomed us into their group to eat, drink and just plain have a good time. It was during this time that Rudy and I really declared ourselves as a couple.

The happiness didn't last. Rudy had a habit of just disappearing for days at a time. Wouldn't answer his phone and wouldn't be home. It even got so bad that he skipped town when he owed me some money and my electricity was shut off. It was the middle of summer and I lived in an attic apartment that quickly became unlivable, so I ended up having to stay at his mother's place for two days and borrow money from her to get my power turned back on. It was miserable and I was angry. When he finally reappeared we fought like vicious animals. But, long story short, he moved in with me after that and things started to smooth out. At least, temporarily.

It seemed like I was the one who took care of everything. I had a steady gig at a Mom and Pop restaurant where I made pretty good money, but Rudy couldn't hold down a steady job to save his life. I was always lending him money for this, that and the other thing and never getting paid back. He finally took a job as an electrician for a construction company that was working in northern Texas and so he would be gone for weeks at a time.

While he was gone, he would frequently "forget" to call me, or tell me the reception was terrible where he was at, or any number of other excuses when it came time to send me money for rent, utilities or other things he owed me money for. We would constantly fight over the phone and I was on the verge of breaking up with him, but he would always come home at that point with some sob story and I would forgive him.

The cycle continued for a long time. He would disappear, lie and basically take my money, and I would forgive him and take him back. It was a bad cycle. And just when I was getting ready to really cut him loose, I missed my period.

I was pregnant.

I don't think I was ever so scared. I didn't want to be a mom. I was on birth control! This shouldn't be happening, so what did I do wrong?

Telling Rudy was even scarier, because I knew it wasn't going to go over well with him. And although he was justifiably angry, he stuck by my side. He went to appointments with me, asked questions, and was excited when he could feel the baby kicking finally. And he was supportive of my decision to move back to Minnesota to be closer to my family.

Of course, things did not get easier once we got to Minnesota. Rudy had to have emergency surgery on three hernias, and ended up with internal bleeding that nearly killed him. I was put on bed rest shortly after arriving when I developed diabetes and preeclampsia. If it wasn't one thing, it was another.

Afton was born in December 2008, and it was the most amazing experience for both of us.

Seven months after Afton's birth, Rudy and I got married in my mom's backyard.

Now we are on our way to baby #4 and although we do still battle like crazy people, the fights are fewer and farther between. We are committed to working hard to stay together, not just for our kids but for ourselves, because seriously, we made it through so much already...neither of us can fathom a situation that could really pull us apart.

So, like I said, our story is anything but a fairy tale. But that doesn't mean it can't still have a Happily Ever After, right?

The Mommy Meltdown

You know I like to keep it real in this space. This is going to be one of those times, because ugh, life isn't always rainbows and unicorns with perfectly healthy meals and spotless makeup. Yesterday was bad, and I had a mommy meltdown because of it.

It was pretty much a culmination of things, but mostly it was the fact that the kids kept fighting, screaming, crying, and not listening to a single word I said to them.

By the end of the day I was so over it, so over everything.

I was sick of the kids misbehaving and I was sick of punishing them repeatedly to not avail. Seeing them angry and sad made me angry and sad. Like come on, really, how many toys do I have to take away because you're screaming bloody murder over your sister playing with it and not sharing? How many times do I have to spank you for purposely running in the opposite direction when I call your name? How many times do I have to fight with you just to get you to eat a meal you normally devour?

It's ridiculous. I don't like punishing my kids. Who really does? But I don't for a moment believe that just talking to them like little adults gets any results. It's never worked for me.

I was raised with discipline and was spanked when I was out of line, or had my mouth washed out with soap when I spoke inappropriately, and I turned out so normal I'm boring. So yes, I spank my kids when they deserve it, or I smack their mouths when they scream for no reason or cry wolf repeatedly. I don't like doing it, but 9 times out of 10 it works and the behavior stops.

Yesterday just wasn't one of those days. Separating the kids didn't work. Time-outs didn't work. Going to bed hungry didn't work.

I was so stressed out I started having contractions and vast amounts of pain from my pelvic separation. I eventually just gave up, went to the bathroom and cried. And cried. And cried. It was ugly and devastating. It was supposed to be a good day, but nothing went even remotely right. And it made me scared too. Scared of how things could be with four kids instead of three.

Sometimes it feels like a downward spiral. I know I shouldn't let one day get the best of me, and that I need to be a little lighter on myself and remember that I'm pretty damn pregnant and am back to taking care of all the kids all by myself all day long while running an online business and maintaining the household. I haven't had to do it all alone in almost eight months, but Rudy is back working full-time and now I am feeling wholly inadequate to accomplish everything I need to accomplish every day. I'm not supermom. I'm not even remotely organized. Instead, I'm tired, sick, in pain, and wanting a permanent break from life.

How selfish, huh?

Pregnancy Update

We're hitting the third trimester in this household and it couldn't come fast enough. Out of all my pregnancies, this one has been the strangest in that it's nothing like my previous three.

There was even a moment when we were all certain this little girl was going to make an early entrance, but she has since changed her mind.

I lost 10lbs at the beginning of this pregnancy and I've only just recently returned to my "before" weight, which has me thrilled for many reasons. One, because I'm not swelling like a beached whale as I did in my previous pregnancies; two, because it means my eating and activity levels are facilitating weight loss, and; three, because my diabetes is finally getting under control.

I'm on insulin now, and I've never felt better. It's great being able to wake in the morning with fingers that aren't so swollen I can't make a fist, and it's great to not have swollen ankles every evening. Also, it's great to not feel like crap after every meal because my blood sugar no longer spikes all crazy high.

Plus, baby girl is measuring right on track and without any apparent physical complications from my diabetes, which is absolutely wonderful. I can't wait to meet this sweet kid, who, so far, has managed to be as stubborn as me (hanging out in bad positions and being impossible to scan via ultrasound). I want to know her little personality and just love on her endlessly, especially since she'll be my last little squishy.

It's time to move past baby-making and on to baby-raising.

A few weeks back, a wonderful bunch of women got together and had a blast. It was called the Arizona Blogger Meetup and it was great!

We landed at a little cafe in downtown Mesa called Sweet Cakes, and clad with fun little prize bags, we all started to get to know each other. I sat with women who had kids and some who did not, but that didn't keep any of us from connecting with each other over our common interests, like blogging, and the fact that we are all in Arizona, ha!

It was so nice to be able to get out of the house and away from the kids for an evening of girl-time. I have to admit that I was totally nervous about it, because I honestly didn't really know anyone and I'm always worried about being boring because let's face it, all I've done in the past four years is pop out kids and raise them at home.

Bonnie was our photographer for the evening and she got some great shots with the little photo booth setup they had going. I had an awesome time talking to her and she is just the cutest thing ever.

I love Chrissy, she is a total sweetheart!

I can't wait for the next meetup, which'll be happening in May!

Man has it ever been crazy around here.
Between my health issues and pregnancy and Rudy finally finding a job after almost eight months of unemployment...I've barely had time to think!

Yesterday, for the first time ever, I tried experimenting with using my 50mm as a macro lens, ala Kristi of Live and Love Out Loud. It was a lot of fun, but I will definitely need to use a tripod because I'm not quite steady enough. So you may see some of those results in the future when I'm finally satisfied.

After I was done playing with that, I went ahead and took some shots of the girls, mostly because I really enjoy documenting their very different eye colors. It's just cool to me, because my brother and I have the same eye color (blue) and my husband and his siblings all have the same eye color (brown), and here we have three kids with three distinctly different eye colors.

Kind of makes me excited to see how #4's eyes turn out!

How would you classify Afton's eyes? Blue? Green? My grandma keeps saying Hazel, but Hazel is a lot more golden I think. Right?

A New Day.

Have I mentioned yet that Rudy finally found a job?
I honestly haven't felt such relief in almost a year.
He's on his second week and he's loving it, which feels so good.

This week he also takes his certification exam and although we are both nervous, I know he's going to nail it, because he always remembers things that interest him, and he loves his line of work.

Of course, after nearly eight months of unemployment, readjusting to being the only parent at home is tough.
I have to feed and clothe the kids, entertain them, and still find time to do my own work and clean and do laundry. There's no more sharing, so I need to really sit down and create a daily schedule to keep myself on track, because I have a tendency to lag and procrastinate. Ugh.

But the future looks so much brighter now and we are starting to look forward to different things, like sending Afton to preschool, enrolling the girls in dance or gymnastics and giving them swimming lessons. Things we couldn't even entertain as possibilities before now.

It feels so good.

Saturday was spectacular down here in Mesa. It was mostly sunny and a perfectly perfect 75 degrees.
So we took the kids to the park for a little fun!

I played around a little and decided to try capturing the kids mid-jump. They were more than willing to oblige, except for Vivienne, who was far more interested in her Dora-mobile.

I even got Rudy to participate, though it took some cajoling.

And because it isn't fun without something outrageously silly, here is ME, jumping like I've gone completely insane.

Life Lately

I am pretty certain I lead a very boring life, since it seems to revolve entirely around the kids and food, ha.

The girls bunked up top in their room to watch some Mulan before bed, which was exceedingly cute because they can usually be found on the floor beating each other up with some toy or another.

I shared my hair woes with everyone, cause it's a work in progress, and it's been warm enough lately that Vivienne even woke up with sweaty baby bed head!

Supermom was in action, whipping up a balanced, nutritious breakfast of scrambled egg beaters, bacon, organic oatmeal bars and fruit smoothies. It gave the girls enough energy to stay up late and learn to peddle their bikes without assistance, though Laney did experience some Man Down syndrome. What a trouper.

Although Rudy picked up a mag full of delicious diabetic recipes for my diabetic self, we set out on a mission to make homemade gorditas. Seriously, you guys, they were thebombdotcom and reminded me of living in San Antonio. I missed those little fatties and can't wait to eat some more!

When I had a day full of long doctor appointments, Rudy had a Daddy/Daughter day with the girls, complete with sandwiches, chips, pickles and smiles. By the end of the day I was content to just relax in bed with a cup of Sleepytime Tea and some Gossip Girl on Netflix.

The girls love hanging out at their great-grandma's because she builds them little nests so they can watch Spongebob.

Delaney got to my scissors one morning and played stylist on her bangs. sigh. That was a couple of weeks ago, but her bangs still look pretty mangled!

Rudy and I made homemade gyros the other week and I honestly wasn't expecting the ingredient list I needed to make them. BUT! They were freakin' delish and I look forward to making them again. When we were stuffed and ready to die Rudy got up with the girls to cheer on their football team to a big win!

So, that's been my life lately. How has you life been?

A Hair Affair

I have the most creative post titles, don't I?
I think so.
Yup.

Anyways, do you guys have hair? I'm kind of hoping you do, because I could reeeeeeeeally use some help.
See, for the vast majority of my life I have had short hair. Like, pixie short.

But, my hair has grown, and is now a long, wild mess!

Seriously, I have NO IDEA what to do with my hair. The last time my hair was this long I was just five years old. Even a super basic braid from the nape of my neck is hard for me to accomplish. In fact, I have an entire pinterest board dedicated to all the things I would like to do with my long hair, but I don't know where to start!

I need some help you guys. I need the dish, the low-down, the secrets and the tricks to working with long hair.

Here is an idea of what's going on in my hair-world. This is my arsenal of products. And this is, literally, all that I am using right now.

1-2 Garnier Fructis Length & Strength Shampoo and Conditioner // 3 Comb // 4 Tigi Ionic Hairdryer // 5 Flat Iron // 6 Hair Wand

My hair is kind of medium thickness, and it frizzes like whoa when I blow dry it. My hair is also oily, so after the first day, I generally have to wear my bangs (or what remains of them, they are growing out) back or they get super stringy and gross. The back of my head is also a little on the flat side, which is annoying when I try to create volume (of course, I am most likely doing it wrong in the first place!), and if I let my hair air dry, it's very flat and boring and with a slight wave.

I need opinions and help. What is the:

Best shampoo and conditioner (from a store like Walmart or Target)
Best splurge product from a salon (like deep conditioning, or styling product)
Best styling products for my type of hair
Best styling tools for my hair
Best brush or comb or whatever?

Seriously, I need help with every step. Someone wanna come over and coach me?
Do you guys have any good tutorials stocked up? Good for baby beginners like moi? Please share!

I really need to make something of this mess on my head before I get so frustrated I cut it all off!

Oh, you guys. You are just AWESOME.
I was dying of laughter at some of the guesses to last week's WW.

Seriously, so funny.
I think my favorite was Joyce's comment: "He just told you he wants another child."
Ah ha ha ha, you know, that probably was the look I made when I realized I was preggo with #4.
Either that or I had a stroke.

But a lot of you were really close! Although he didn't actually do anything to my butt, that expression is the one I generally use when I want to say, "stop pokin' muh butt!"

This week I offer a more...normal photo, from the same session (I was the photographer, by the way, for those who guessed the photographer was being silly), of the whole family!

I look at this photo and I am sad, because last week Laney found my work scissors and had a field day on her bangs. They are a total loss! Maybe I will share that photo next week, ha.

I don't know about you, but down here in forever-hot-and-sunny Arizona, we're expecting four days of below freezing temps at night. Gross. Now, if you really know me, you are probably wondering why I think the cold is so gross; I'm the girl constantly complaining about how much I miss snow!

Well, it's simple: I hate the cold if there is no snow.
See? Simple.

So, in the meantime, I am going to be hiding out and making things like homemade gyros and lasagna soup. You'll be seeing those recipes later. But for now, enjoy some of the cool things happening around the interwebs!

If you know Joanna, you know she is one fashionable Mom. So help a girl out and go vote for her! She's currently #10, but I'm pretty certain we can make her #1!

Your husband being so excited by your presence when you get home from an appointment that he forgets he's making you a grilled cheese sandwich and burns it...on both sides.

Wait, that doesn't really sound like love, does it?
Ha ha ha, love is him making you a brand new sandwich because he feels so bad about burning the first one.

Yum. And see? I tried to eat the burnt one, but I just couldn't overcome the evil burnt flavor!
