As we announced on the last show, we’re now off the FM airwaves for a little while pending a reshuffle in the schedule that will hopefully see us move to a weekly format at a slightly more favourable time (e.g. 7pm or something). However rather than take a break, we thought we’d record a show specially for podcasting to ensure nobody forgets who we are.

So! On this June show, you get Tom’s “Cowes Treasures” fresh from his break in the Isle of Wight, Trick’s favourite ever country and western song about the ills of LSD (because as we know, there are many), not to mention brand new tracks from The Bug, Diplo and Ladyhawk… the latter of which was played specifically because Tom can’t stand it.

Expect the usual line in “soaks by the fire” banter, fine tunes running the whole gamut of music styles (hell Tom even drops a Harry Belafonte/Bob Dylan collab in there!) and even a moment of self-aggrandisement when Trick plays one of his own tunes. LEGGO MY EGO!

Coupled with conversation ranging from how epiphanies get fewer and further between as you get older through to whether we should take the station manager hostage and beat him with leather straps, this is, well, just another show from Messrs Trick and Tom really…

Enjoy!

For last week’s show I thought I’d play through some of the stuff I was going to play on the last show with Tom, not to mention one or two followup tracks, such as the Pedro remix that commenter Foreverware recommended. Given we podcast all the other Trick n’ Tom shows, I figure it is only fair to post this one up too, though I’ll admit I won’t be podcasting it on the Trick and Tom feed as I don’t think its a “proper” show as such.

Anyways, here is the tracklisting:

1. Pedro - Fear and Resilience (Cherrystones RMX)
2. The Heavy - Coleen
3. Tony Alvon and the Belairs - Sexy Coffee Pot
4. Obsession77 - Atomic Forest
5. Galactic - I Got It (What You Need)
6. Cinematic Orchestra - Rites of Spring (Live)
7. Tim Buckley - Pleasant Street/You Keep Me Hanging On

I was going to post this up before the end of the year (for reasons that will become apparent), but decided to wait until now so that people would be past the whole festive/new year madness and might therefore give this one some time and thought.

Back in 2006, slightly curious sequence of events began that started with me doing a remix of the Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” in a KLF “Chill Out” style, and ultimately ended in mass speculation as to the KLF’s return, a new documentary, a new LP and more. Behind it all were myself and Strictly Kev, two ardent KLF fans who, if we’re honest, got slightly carried away with our fandom and wound up coming as close to identify theft on Messrs Cauty and Drummond as could be possible.

My part in the ruse was the remix that kickstarted things (in short: I did it, sent it to Kev and he happened to be working on a KLF tribute mix, which ultimately turned into us passing off said mix as a possible lost item from the KLFs past), the creation of the website and domain and general input into how this should be perpetuated. Kev, as master of both the mix and the visual medium (in his Openmind alias) was responsible for the final mix (aka “The Sound of Mu” and all the incredible artwork you will see shortly, which rates amongst some of the finest photoshoppery I have ever borne witness to.

So what’s the upshot on this? Well, basically we got a lot of people thinking the KLF were returning on the 20th anniversary of the “1987: What The Fuck Is Going On?” release. The hoax worked so well one cheeky bugger even managed to sell a copy of our “release” on eBay for £40. Not bad for a CDR!

But, rather than read my manic typings on this, I urge to you to download the PDF below, which is a booklet lovingly created by Kev that details what we did, what the site looked like, what the fallout was and more. Trust me, its worth reading. In addition, below are links to both the original version of the Sound of Mu mix, and the vocal one that never went online, until now.

Read the PDF, then listen to the mixes. If you were ever a KLF fan, you’ll love it… but then if you are a KLF fan, you might well already know about this mix

enjoy!

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!!

For the final track of the day, there was only one man I could post up, for the simple reason that it marks one year since his passing. I refer of course to the Godfather of Soul, Mr Please Please Me… [insert one of the 42 names for JB here], Mister Jaaaaaaaaaaames Brown! “Soulful Christmas” is a high point of his (at times rather dodgy) Christmas LP, though I was also tempted to post up both versions of The Christmas Song that I have on 45, in which side A is JB’s “regular” version (i.e. restrained R&B crooning) and side B is the “JB” version, i.e. proper howling, sexed up FONK. Fact is though that Soulful Christmas is a slightly more uptempo funky number, and given its Christmas Day, dammit it had to be done…

I hope you’ve enjoyed the yuletide advent; its certainly been interesting digging through my tracks for stuff to tickle your ears. Enjoy the track… and RIP JB!

If I had to pick one LP which to me nails the Christmas vibe in one - that one LP you put on and feel instantly “Yeah! Christmas time!”, then its gotta be “A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector”. The whole vibe just IS Christmas to me: its as much a part of it as presents, booze, the bloody Great Escape on TV and a shit jumper your Mum/Gran/Auntie (delete as appropriate) thought you’d look amazing in. So, before I started this I had to resolve myself to only post one track, on the basis that if I allowed more I’d prolly have a Top 25 consisting of 13 Spector tracks.

So, whittling it down to just one I chose Darlene Love’s awesome “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)”, which sums it all up so damn well. Its arguably the best track on the album, arguably one of Spector’s finest moments, and definitely the highlight of Ms Love’s career. As with Brian Wilson, Spector is a producer whose work I’ll always admire as one of pop music’s high points, and to me this is possibly his finest moment… Enjoy!

As we near the end of the 25 day marathon posting/podcasting session, I thought I’d play one of the songs I aired on my Christmas Special Rhythm Inc show with Wrongtom: Detroit Junior’s “Christmas Day”. Oddly, I got into this track as something sounding quite Motown-ish, but on researching the man I discovered he was actually a Chicago blues piano man who backed someone else I aired on the show with Tom: Amos Milburn. This track bucks the blues vibe in favour of a much more uptempo boogie-woogie style, and I love it. Enjoy!
