Like two old soaks chatting by the fire, Trick and Tom swap songs, talking with passion and insight about the music they love, both new and old. Uncovering music you may have missed is usually the order of the day, with "but I bet you've not heard this..." being an oft-muttered sentence. Anything from doo-wop to gospel, punk to dub is pulled out for consideration, with the sole hope of having you wanting to look up these artists when the show's over.

With typical technical finesse and the professional presenting abilities of Alan Partridge, we crash into another week with the erstwhile Ed Zed tucked under one arm to bring you another series of selections and banter as only we can. This week differs from usual shows, as Ed steps into Tom’s shoes to handle selection duties -- a situation brought about by Tom originally not planning to appear due to gigging commitments with Pama Int’l, only to have it cancelled due to a support slot with The Specials (Pama, not Tom -- he wishes!). So, with Ed stepping up with anything from classic Roxanne Shante to a highly obscure piece from Paul Simon (!), this is… well… much like our usual shows, really. We do also stride into the world of advertising as we force Ed to record a voiceover live on-air. The fame! The fame!!

Tracklisting:
Jaga Jazzist -- One-Armed Bandit
Moog Plays The Beatles -- Daytripper
Konk -- Love Attack
[unknown tune submitted by Craig Leckie - any ideas, please let us know]
Flaming Lips -- Convinced Of The Hex
Roxanne Shante -- Brothers Ain’t Shit
BlakRoc -- Ain’t Nothin’ Like You (Hoochie Coo)
Jerry Landis -- The Lone Teen Ranger
Thunderheist -- Little Booty Girl (Lunice RMX)
Golden Earring -- Kill Me Ce Soir

Featured video this week was going to be this rather excellent Richard Edson showreel, but sadly we can’t embed it on this site. So, in its place is Ed’s Golden Earring selection, as it got cut slightly short and is rather ace:
Given both myself and Tom are very rhythm-driven in terms of tracks we love -- or rather, appreciative of the power of a killer beat -- we thought it might be interesting to try a theme special where none of the tracks had beats at all. Well, that was the initial plan, though as you’ll hear something may have been lost in translation resulting in one or two tracks creeping in sporting percussive qualities at best and a bloody huge drum beat at worst (take a bow Ed Zed)…

So, with the Beatles/Beatless puns out the way and joined by our compadre Mr Ed Zed, we sidestep numerous technical disasters including the Resonance CD decks collectively refusing to play Melvins’ “Colossus of Destiny” (a wise move, many might argue) and press on with a series of selections that we hoped might go beyond your obvious choices to deliver something a bit more interesting. Did we succeed? Well, we shall leave that to you to decide, but if the tracklisting might sway you, here it is…

Tracklisting:
Pigbag “The backside”
Grinderman “Grinderman”
Inflatable Boy Clams “I’m Sorry”
Sigue Sigue Sputnik “Atari Baby”
Xela “Creeping Flesh”
Hightower Set “Putting Heads To Bed”
Stephen Duffy “Wednesday Jones”
Morphine “In Spite Of Me”
Social Climbers “Hello Texas”
Galliano “Roofing Tiles (Instrumental)”

As mentioned above, the soundbed was meant to be Melvins’ “Colossus of Destiny” album/track, but thanks to technical hell turned out to be “O Berimbau” by Nana Vasconcelos.

Featured video this week is a peach of a selection by Tom -- a slightly random clip of Martin Degville from Sigue Sigue Sputnik forcing some German TV presenter to dress up SSS-style:
This week we decided to step up with a fair spread of tracks taking in anything from the 90s loveliness of Girls Against Boys to the Gloria Estefan-toting Lindstrøm & Christabelle. We also feature two of Tom’s worst selections ever, namely bogle covers of Bette Midler and Bryan Adams. No, seriously. On top of that we have the sublime stylings of Lorraine Ellison, the Coltrane-covering Red Holt and, despite protestations, the annual revisit of Meshuggah -- an airing best summed up by the message we received during the show from listener Jesscapeshop via Twitter: “somehow a year between airings doesn’t seem quite long enough”…

So, as ever, grab your cognac, settle into your oxblood leather armchair, put those slipper-covered feet up on the coffee table and join us as we reprise the Camden Lurch for the next 60 minutes…

Tracklisting:

With yours truly fresh from a fine day out at the Jukebox Madness record fair, 45s were high on the agenda, taking in anything from the mighty, marvellous vocal harmonies of Johnny and the Expressions to the rather bizarre 80s rap moments of Dr. John. Tom’s contributions took in something of a synth theme, loosely tying Holger Hiller, Restiform Bodies and even Wilson Pickett into the mix…

Tracklisting:
J.D Alex “Grasshopper”
Johnny and the Expressions “Something I Want To Tell You”
Wilson Pickett “Don’t Knock My Love (Part II)”
Dr. John “Jet Set”
Holger Hiller “Neighbours (Demixed by Steve)”
Richard Hawley “Open Up Your Door”
Restiform Bodies “Recycle America”
Scritti Politti “Flesh and Blood”

The soundbed was various tracks from the new Alberta Cross album.

Every once in a while we have an off night (hey! stop that at the back…) and this was one such fine instance where the planets align, all the pieces fall into place… and we have just about everything go wrong.

Of course cock-ups are fun (at which point we should mention the naked man cover courtesy of Man… sorry), so we’re confident this should prove a fine listen, albeit potentially for the wrong reasons. In our defence though, the tracks selected are top dollar, including Nigerian disco from the dubiously named Dr Adolf Aonotu, Roots Manuva-led dancehall courtey of Breakage and possibly the worst-named band in living memory: Bloody Beetroots…

Tracklisting:
Dr. Adolf Aonotu “Ijere”
Gougoush “I Believe In Love”
Mat Young “Indica”
Jetpak “An Elderly Game”
Bloody Beetroots feat Cool Kids “Awesome”
Breakage “Run Em Out”
Junior Ross and the Spears “Say Jah Jah Say (Mr Trick version)”
Kathy Smith “Topanga”
Joe Higgs “Journey To Freedom”

and the sound-bed would’ve been “The Alchemist” by Man

For my part, the tracks are 100% new releases; quite a shock to anyone who listens regularly and hears my ranting about the quality of new releases. Tom, on the other hand, steps up with a fistful of Acid Jazz-related tracks, with a concerted attempt to shed more light on the lesser-known gems of a label traditionally associated with Corduroy and the James Taylor Quartet.

So, get listening below to hear tracks from Thavius Beck, Tyondai Braxton, Mother Earth, United Future Organisation and more…

Tracklisting:
Mother Earth “Riot On 103rd St”
Thavius Beck “Go (Offshore Remix)”
United Future Organization “My Foolish Dream”
Benjamin Zephaniah “Dry”
Tyondai Braxton “Opening Bell”
Modulations “Rough Out Here”

Soundbed this week was various tracks from the new Blockhead album “The Music Scene”.

Featured video for this week isn’t a musical one per se -- its Tyondai Braxton talking about his Central Market album, which has remained glued to the Mr Trick Listening Post since I got my hands on it…
Originally the plan was to revisit the finest tracks from our first 49 shows, but on the basis we podcast the show we felt it would be selling things a bit short, and hence we swiftly revised our idea and instead step up with a selection of shows all united by one theme: they are all over fifty years old.

With 1959 as the cutoff date we were both hesitant as to how easy this would be, but ironically we found it to be one of the easiest shows to select for that we’ve ever done. Taking in doo wop, jazz, calypso, R&B and even proto-electronica courtesy of Raymond Scott, there is a distinct whiff of “they don’t make em like that anymore”, no question. Factor in our listeners Rob and “survivalist beard”-toting Long Distance Dan joining us and chipping in too and its a fine, warm celebration of our half-centenary.

Tracklisting:
The Blue Men “Orbit Around The Moon”
Kansas Joe McCoy “When The Levee Breaks”
Sun Ra & His Solar-Myth Arkestra “Watusa”
The Five Satins “In The Still of the Night”
Maya Angelou “Stone Cold Dead In The Market”
Raymond Scott “Don’t Beat Your Wife Every Night”
The Chantels “Maybe”
Raymond Scott “The Rhythm Modulator”
Raymond Scott “BC 1675″

Add on to that an old fave of both presenters in the form of Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy and a classic, CLASSIC Upsetters dub (arguably one of the funkier out there) and it all amounts to one fine listen. Sadly, as we commence with Trick playing entirely the wrong track, we can once again prove that if the “many” in question were referring to us they’d be sadly mistaken.

Gaffes aside, we return augmented by 50% with the additional presence (and no doubt hotly anticipated return) of one Edward Zed, Esq. Since his last show he has been present as the rather disembodied voice of our “number to text in on” sting, but now he returns body-and-all with a couple of his own fine selections to let loose on you, our dear listeners. Music covered includes Coati Mundi, Jason Crest, Herma Puma and Reggie Stepper, and topics take in anything from Toyah, Vicki Michelle in panto, the merits of tampons over skincare products and, most pressingly, exactly which curry our listener Josh had just ordered from over the road.

Only here, dear listener, only here…

The featured video for this could only be this -- someone’s vid tribute to Jason Crest’s “Black Mass” track doubling as an homage to b-movies of yesteryear…
