Like two old soaks chatting by the fire, Trick and Tom swap songs, talking with passion and insight about the music they love, both new and old. Uncovering music you may have missed is usually the order of the day, with "but I bet you've not heard this..." being an oft-muttered sentence. Anything from doo-wop to gospel, punk to dub is pulled out for consideration, with the sole hope of having you wanting to look up these artists when the show's over.

This week we gleefully stepped back up with our own selections to air, which included -- shock horror -- some new releases! Yes, Busdriver and Mos Def fulfil in that regard, as does Fist of Facts (technically, even if the track is 20+ years old). Ranting was set to “overdrive” this week -- listen to find out why!

Tracklisting:
Avalanche -- “You Know My Love”
Busdriver -- “Me Time”
Mos Def Ft. The Ruler -- “Auditorium”
Mr Dibbs -- “Ugly…”
Fist Of Facts -- “Fugitive Vesco”
Bugger Sod -- “Introducing The BS Crewe/Left… Right/Lord Giberick
and a snippet of Mack Attack -- “Let There Be Drums”

Soundbed: various songs sampled by RZA

Here’s the featured video for the week -- some crusty old Fist of Facts footage uploaded by none other than Sal P. himself:

While Bill Brewster bucked the worrying trend of not showing up to a Trick & Tom guest slot we couldn’t guarantee that others would follow suit, so when we asked Greg Belson to step up to the plate, the fact he lives thousands of miles from the Resonance studios may seem a little wishful thinking to some. Luckily Belson’s as reliable in that department as he is with his selections which you can now marvel at in all their podcasted glory.

There’s little to no chance of you recognizing even one of these records, all hand picked from some of the darkest dingiest digging spots in California, and no doubt if you’re familiar with our shtick then that’s exactly how you like it. We can’t promise you’ll find any of them in your local supermarket or hiding on a cheeky zshare link anywhere but we can tell you some solid gold’s been mined in thar hills, from the filthiest of funk to some sublime dancefloor gospel and Mr Belson will in no way disappoint.

As usual the careless banter runs thick and fast with Greg giving us the low down on the world of deep funk trading, sharing the tale behind dancefloor stormer “Silly Savage” and doing one of the greatest mock red-neck accents you’re likely to hear this side of Tom Hanks being shot in the buttocks.

Tracklisting:
Boris Gardner Happening -- Ghetto Funk [Leal]
Little Tiger -- Funky Fight [Geodol]
Rosa Lee Brooks -- Utee [Revis]
Walter Washington -- Mary Jane [Power]
Dynamic Disciples -- Satan [Purified]
Holy Disciples -- Trying To Make A Hundred [Songbird]
Christian Harmonizers -- Troubles of the World [Hummingbird]
Sammy Jones -- Cinderella Jones [Mascot]
Gene & The Team Beats -- I’ll Carry On [Leatherwood]
The Presidents -- Shoe Shine [Hollywood]
Dennis Brown -- A Little Bit More Loving

Soundbed: Hightower Set -- Moon Runner

The theme this month? Cover versions. So, get ready as we take in anything from latin versions of the Sex Pistols through to warehouse classics performed by a colliery brass band. The bands covered? Let’s see, we have Alice Cooper, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Black Sabbath and Take That. Yes, Take That… but don’t worry, it isn’t on for long.

Oh, and next week we will have a guest with us in the studio: Tom’s old mate Greg Belson, fresh off the plane from LA armed with “a few dirties” (as Tom put it -- which means something else entirely to me) for our ears. Don’t miss!!

Tracklisting:
Snowboy & The Latin Section -- “Anarchy In The UK”
1000 Homo DJs -- “Supernaut”
Herbie Mann -- “Norwegian Wood”
Acid Brass -- “Can U Dig It?”
Born Jamericans -- “Back For Good”
Little Kirk -- “What’s Love Got to Do”
Melvins -- “Venus In Furs”
Thin White Rope -- “May This Be Love”
Jose Feliciano -- “California Dreamin”

Featured Video for this week is a clip of the Fairey Brass Band live, playing KLF’s mighty “What Time Is Love?” at the Innocent Village Fete 2008 -- proof that not only was the project a success, but that the band have made a living out of it ever since crossing over into the mainstream in the process. Good on em says I!

I mean, look at it… Where else would you find glam twonks Kiss cosying up alongside former Moloko drummer Davide De Rose? Or west coast rappers DJ Quik & Kurupt alongside a lesser-known track from Lousiville post-rock godfathers Slint? My guess? Nowhere else.

This show had a few highlights, not least the look on Tom’s face on hearing “Mr Blackwell” from Kiss’s mythical/notorious/just-plain-shite* album “Music From The Elder”, so get listening to hear a customarily broad selection that even includes Jah Scouse. Yes, you read that right, Jah Scouse. Check the man himself on the back cover!

Tracklisting:
Floormaster Squeeze -- Kick Out The James (Again)
DJ Quik & Kurupt -- 9 Times Outta 10
Slint -- Pat
The Smiths -- Paint A Vulgar Picture
Sketchie -- Salute To Alone
Dave De Rose -- Dreams
Kiss -- Mr Blackwell
Jah Scouse -- Merge

Soundbed: Jungle Drums -- Walk (inst.)

Featured video for this week is a fine one we found of Kiss attempting to play a track from “Music From The Elder” some 23 years later… and failing miserably. Worth watching entirely for the Aussie fans’ interjection at the end…
So, kicking off with the insane Country & Western acid funk of Area Code 615, we then veer back into metal territory for the first time in a while with Justin Broadrick’s more obscure Sweet Tooth project before taking a change in format slightly by having Tom air three go-go tracks back to back from Tilt (aka Trouble Funk), Arkadion and The Junk Yard Band. Then its into tablist territory with the brilliant -- and fully transcribed and notated -- Antimatter from DJ Radar, back to the bovine dancefloor styles courtesy of The Magic Fly and finally down with some Hijack-sampling dub funk from Scottish hardcore merchants Dawson. Phew!

Tracklisting:
Area Code 615 -- Scotland
Sweet Tooth -- Fat City
Tilt -- Arkade Funk
Arkadion -- Torque
The Junk Yard Band -- The Word
Radar -- Antimatter
The Magic Fly -- Two Planets feat. Ricky Ranking (Mr Benn Bambaclog Remix)
Dawson -- Bodies Under The Floor

Soundbed: Zinc -- Amazon

It has to be said, Bill is very much a man on our wavelength; a true music fan with catholic tastes, it transpired he also shared our love of “double take” tracks, i.e. great tracks by well-known artists most people write off as rubbish. Ever think you’d hear a Jamiroquai track on the show? Neither did we but trust us, the one Bill selects is amazing.

If we’re honest, these kind of shows are manna from heaven for us, as they represent a chance to have someone else make the selections and potentially switch us on to both classic tracks and artists we may have slept on. Bill brought that in droves, airing killer songs from artists we knew of whilst turning us onto the likes of Kevin Hewick, Magazine 60 and The Feelies, one of Stiff Records’ lesser-known signings who -- on the basis of the awesome track Bill aired -- are to be sought out immediately.

Or, as listener JedB put it in a mid-show message, “these track selections are even more eccentric than usual!”… which we’re taking to be a good thing!

Be sure to check out the treasure trove that is Bill’s djhistory.com website, and if you’ve not already we strongly recommend you buy his excellent work with DJHistory co-founder Frank Broughton, “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life”

Tracklisting:
1. The Utmost -- Whole Lotta Loving
2. David Essex -- Rock On
3. Kevin Hewick -- Haystack
4. Jamiroquai -- Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing
5. Donovan -- Well Known Has-Been
6. The Feelies -- The Boy With Perpetual Nervousness
7. The Phenomenal Handclap Band -- Fifteen To Twenty
8. Magazine 60 -- Don Quixote
9. Etta James -- You Give Me What I Want

Soundbed: Indeep -- DJ Delight

As ever the rant factor is in full swing on Trick’s part, with just about all new releases coming in for some serious wrath. We can only be glad he didn’t make good on his threat to air something from Kiss’ “Music from The Elder” album as some kind of spiteful revenge move. Well, not this week anyway…*evil grin*

Tracklisting:
1. The WLS Band -- Simply Funky
2. The Jimi Entley Sound -- Charlie’s Theme
3. Galt McDermott -- Space
4. The Meat Puppers -- Never To Be Found
5. Pantyraid -- Beba
6. The Young Gods -- Summer Eyes (excerpt)
7. Count Zebra and the Seasiders -- Bedbug
8. Chin’s Sextet -- Honeybee

Soundbed for the show was Manu Chao’s “Mr Bobby”.

Featured Video for this week’s show was a curious YouTube find; Young Gods doing an awesome acoustic rendition of their “Our House” track, which was the 2nd track from them that Trick played on the show, briefly:
This week we were meant to be joined by Sean and Finny from Pama Intl, currently supporting The Specials on tour… but sadly things weren’t going our way (again!) and the lads couldn’t make it in. Hence, we hastily put together a show which, in hindsight, turned out pretty damn well if we do say so ourselves.

Taking in much reggae (thanks in part to my scoring a lovely cache of Jamaican 45s from a dealer), we also swerve into “you know the name but you won’t know this” territory with a discofied re-edit of Mott The Hoople and a truly sublime blues track from the Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac. Factor in a fastchat special from Tom and a fine, funky cover of “Sunshine of your Love” and you’ve got much to enjoy, trust us…

Tracklisting:
Dave “Baby” Cortez -- “Funky Robot pt.1″
Mott The Hoople -- “Bastard (A Mountain Of One re-edit)”
Unknown Beverley’s Records 45
Papa San -- “Big and Bad”
Fleetwood Mac -- “Need Your Love So Bad”
5th Dimension -- “Sunshine of Your Love”
Unknown reggae 45
Roland Alphonso -- “Back Beat”
Pama Intl -- “Hand To Mouth (Wrongtom Version)”

Hot Cool Spice were behind this week’s soundbed with an overly extended version of “Worker’s Bank”.

This was the Featured Video for this week -- Smiley Culture’s “Police Officer” to tie in with Tom’s fastchat, er, chat…
So, this was officially tagged the “cheer us up” special and we proceeded to roll out track after track of music that we were determined would force us out of the doldrums and into a better place. And you know what? It worked too. From Monster Magnet’s acid-soaked rock to Nadsroic’s boot-clappin’ Room Mist, we blasted the tracks louder than ever in the studio and asked you all to contact us with messages to lift our spirits. And, god bless you all, you did. Whether it was the merits of seagulls (and their excrement) or the arrest of Hairy Lewis that never came to be, its safe to say you all put smiles on our faces. Factor in Phantom covering Suicide and Alternative TV dropping dub styles and as ever its the usual broad mix of tracks that you KNOW will make sit up and listen.

Here’s the tracklisting in full:
Phantom – “Ghostrider”
The Eliminators – “Love Your Woman”
Cougar – “Rhinelander”
Sexual Harassment – “If I Gave You A Party”
Nadsroic – “Room Mist”
Roots Manuva – “Do Nuh Bodda Mi”
Roots Manuva – “Do Nuh Bodda Mi (Xrabit Remix)”
Roots Manuva – “Do Nuh Bodda Mi (Red Light Remix)”
Roots Manuva Meets Wrongtom – “Do Bodda Mi”
The Phantom – “Power Dub (Version)”
Alternative TV – “Life After Dub”

Soundbed for the show: Regolith’s “Sap Rising” LP which is FREE download over at Myuzyk. Don’t miss!

This month’s is entitled “In Praise Of The Upright Bass”, and casts an ear over various tracks that feature the fine, resonant, deep and warm sound of the mighty double bass.

The premise for this show began when I was listening to Roberta Flack’s “First Take” album -- a truly mesmerising record that Tom rightly described as sounding “like you’re right there in the room with them”. Whilst Roberta’s voice is doubtless the star attraction of this record, Ron Carter’s effortless bass work is astonishing and summarises to me all that is sublime about the double bass as an instrument. With that in mind, I texted Tom suggesting we do a special celebrating the double bass, and now here we are, selecting our favourite tracks for your delectation. Sadly, some tracks had to get left out due to our one-hour running time, and we even had some great suggestions from friends, one of which will be making an appearance on our blog shortly. However in those 60 minutes we take in the sublime Ms. Flack, the twin-bass weaving of Cecil McBee and Stanley Clarke, the legendary Mr Carter’s appearance with Tribe Called Quest, the modern sound of bass courtesy of The Heliocentrics and naturally a piece featuring arguably Britain’s most legendary double bass player, session legend Danny Thompson.

Here’s the tracklisting in full:

Lee Arnold Trio -- “Funky Chimes”
Pharoah Sanders -- “Black Unity Part One”
The Heliocentrics -- “Distant Star”
Unknown -- “Halfcrown Skit”
A Tribe Called Quest feat Ron Carter -- “Verses From The Abstract”
McCoy Tyner -- “Survival Blues”
Donovan -- “Get Thy Bearings”
Soul Coughing -- “How Many Cans”
Roberta Flack -- “Trying Times”

Here is the Featured Video for this show -- Ron Carter’s rather odd coffee advert he made for Japan. Tom actually tried to find the ads he did for some pipe brand, but sadly he couldn’t find them:
