A whisper-thin new pressure sensor could be a step toward creating artificial skin that is able to actually feel. A sense of touch is important for developing robots that can navigate the world, and could improve prosthetic limbs for amputees.

A new sensor may fit that bill being developed by researchers at Stanford University.

"The Eidos Mask Enables 'Superhuman' Senses"
Human beings, while being the dominant species on this planet, hardly have the sharpest or most discerning senses when compared to other Earth-bound species. So in order to see, hear, or otherwise process things that we cannot normally perceive, we invent a piece of technology that helps us along, be it glasses, a magnifying glass, a microscope, night-vision goggles, or anything else someone could dream up.

So a group of students from the Royal College of Art in London has developed headsets that allow the wearer to adjust their sight and hearing in the same way they'd control the settings on a TV or radio.

It is called The Eidos Mask. The mask and visor works separately to enhance sensory input. The face mask component has the ability to isolate sounds in a crowd and, along with a mouth piece for inner ear transmission, gives the listener the effect of hearing the sound inside one's head. The visor component has an embedded camera that transmits visual data to a computer and sends it back to the visor, which then displays the video information with enhancements that help the viewer detect patterns of movement.

Currently this technology is only a prototype and isn’t ready for widespread use. But it’s certainly an interesting glimpse into where we’re heading. Right now it’s framed as something that will only help us, but if taken to its logical conclusion, there may be a time when we find normal reality boring, causing us to turn to technology to shape and enhance things into what we really want. We are used to controlling the world around us to find the settings that suit us best. But while technology advances to aid this, our physical bodies remain the same. What if we had the same control over our senses? Just think about it..

"How Terror Hijacks The Brain"
Fear short circuits the brain, especially when it hits close to home. When people are terrorized, the smartest parts of our brain tend to shut down.

This dramatically alters how we think, the neural networks in the brain that are involved in rational, abstract cognition — essentially, the systems that mediate our most humane and creative thoughts — are very sensitive to emotional states, especially fear.

So when people are terrorized, Problem solving becomes more categorical, concrete and emotional we become more vulnerable to reactive and short-sighted solutions.

This warping of your perspective and perception is exactly what terrorists aim to achieve. Terrorists are trying to induce fear and panic. Their mission is to Hijack your brain. Just think about it...

"3D Printing"
3D printing technology is not new. For the past 20 years, designers and manufacturers have been using it to produce prototypes before undergoing the lengthy and expensive process of mass market production. This is changing. Over time, 3D printers have dramatically dropped in price, making it an accessible technology for small businesses and individual consumers as well.

The world's first gun made up almost entirely of 3D-printed components has also been created. The firearm, called the "Liberator," is a small pistol-like weapon that can shoot various types of handgun bullets through several interchangeable plastic barrels. Now that the gun has been tested and proven to be functional, they will publish the digital blueprints for it on their website allowing anyone to make it.

Another recent creation from 3-D Printing is a bionic ear. A team of scientists have managed to create a truly bionic ear. It's not just a replacement--it has sensors woven throughout the tissue that actually enhance its hearing abilities. In recent months, it's been proven possible to run living cells through a 3-D printer and keep them viable, which has some pretty amazing possibilities for bionics.

Researchers also stated that they are just three years away from printing custom-made body parts, including muscle and nerve cells and cartilage. And in just over a decade, they believe will be possible to print human organs.

As we enter a period of manufacturing revolution, it is clear that the traditional product development process will be massively disrupted. As “manufacturing” in its traditional sense is devolved to consumers and physical products become “virtualized,” the shift in the risk landscape is likely to be equally profound. Technical innovation rarely comes without risk. With 3D printing at the heart of a quickly-advancing manufacturing revolution, we will see the creation of products that were unimaginable as little as five years ago. Just think about it...

In September 2015, the Federal Aviation Administration will open standard US airspace to drones. Not keen on the idea of undetected flying robots overhead, a few engineers and computer scientists have acrowdfunding campaign for a drone detection device called "Droneshield."

Worried about an unmanned plane looking into your window? This small detector could alert you when robot planes buzz past. The device might be able to send you text and email alerts that let you know when a drone is nearby.

"Smart Homes Drive Smart Meter Acceptance"
A new report concludes that smart home technology will be crucial to selling the benefits of smart meters to consumers. The communication hub located within smart meters have the potential to create a home area network that acts as a gateway to future services in a connected home, such as remotely managing household appliances, heating systems, home security systems, and even eHealth services for managing chronic conditions. Analysts predict consumers will have anywhere from 15 to 30 appliances and devices connected to a home network in the smart home of the near future.

The lessons from smart meter roll outs in other countries is that you have to bring consumers with you so they want to have these devices installed in their homes. The government understands this and is creating a Central Delivery Body to take on this task. What research shows is that in order to secure broad consumer support for smart meters it is important to communicate both the rational benefits – potential cost savings, carbon reduction – and also paint a compelling vision of the near term future, with the smart home providing consumers with a range of connected devices and services.

If we’re ever going to truly clean up our electrical grid, we’ll need to replace coal and natural gas with zero-carbon sources like solar or nuclear. It won’t be easy—and it’s likely won’t be cheap. But a smarter, more efficient grid—enabled by the same intelligence that brought us the Internet—can help smooth that transition. More bytes will mean fewer electrons.

But many are skepitcal about smart meter technology as some see as it as big brother technology as the real advance isn’t just the sheer amount of all this data, It’s all that they can do with it, just think about it...

"Scientists Decode Dreams with Brain Scans"
Scientists have found a way to "read" dreams, a study suggests. Researchers in Japan used MRI scans to reveal the images that people were seeing as they entered into an early stage of sleep. The team now wants to see if brain activity can be used to decipher other aspects of dreaming, such as the emotions experienced during sleep.

People have been trying to understand dreams since ancient Egyptian times, but the researchers who have carried out this study have found a more direct way to tap into our nighttime visions.

It is an "exciting" piece of research that brings us closer to the concept of dream-reading machines. It's obviously a long way off, but there is no reason why not in principle.

Researchers in this story that tracked people’s brains were able to determine what people would then dream about with astounding accuracy, opening up an enormous set of questions about human consciousness. The content of dreams provides a complicated, hazy window into a person’s mind: What’s the meaning of all that visual junk that slips to the surface from the subconscious and usually lacks any sort of logical narrative? And why do people dream the things they do, when they do? One day science could provide such answers, you'll just need to dream a little dream.

"UFO Disclosure"

The Citizen Hearing on Disclosure of an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race will attempt to accomplish what the Congress has failed to do for forty-five years - seek out the facts surrounding the most important issue of this or any other time.

These are only a few of the numerous sightings seen in the United States. Unidentified flying objects are reported daily all over the planet. Witnesses are left without answers, baffled, confused and sometimes terrified. If they mention what they saw to anyone, they then have to prepare for the potential ridicule of being told they are fools, nut cases, real wackos, and left alone to deal with something that may have changed their lives forever.

Witnesses want to know what these objects are in the sky. Since we get no definitive answers, our next question seems to be, "Why are they not telling us?" The upcoming ufo disclosure could possibly tell us who we are as humans and what our role is in the universe. Are we humans ready to handle the truth of these other beings if they in fact do exist? "Your Brain Pattern Could Be Your Password"
"Pass-thoughts" can be used wirelessly to authenticate users. Password hints can trigger your memory and help you recall your code word. But future security systems may not need a word or a hint--they’ll just read your mind. A password system that tracks and authenticates your brain waves can actually work, according to a new study.

Scientists still are uncertain as to whether someone’s thoughts could be duplicated or if the system could be easily hacked. There are also studies yet to be done about how brain patterns change over time. This method will probably not replace typed passwords on our computers in the very near future, considering the hardware that's required to make it work. However, with new wearable technology like Google Glass, passthoughts could still be useful for performing simpler brain-controlled tasks sometime soon.

The study and use of our brainwaves for future technology may seem like something out of science fiction but as you will learn from this story it is becoming part of our reality and soon our everyday lives. In this case to gain access to your private information you'll literally just have to -- think about it.

"What's Killing the Bees?"
Honeybees die and that is nothing new and beekeepers accept this and on average 30% or more of their livestock will vanish each spring as well. But when more than half of all the honeybees in this country die almost at once -- that is new. And that's what happened this spring.

So what is killing all the bees? Almost everything is. Unfortunately, there's little that anyone can do about it. Only by completely reworking agricultural practices can these insects possibly be saved. Until then, it's likely that their numbers will keep declining, which means bad news for farmers who need them to pollinate their crops.

"Is Time Travel Real?"
Few subjects in science evoke more emotion than time travel. Humankind's fascination with time travel dates back thousands of years. Although many people believe that time travel is strictly science fiction, it is not.

Einstein's special theory of relativity, published in 1905, was the first to give scientific meaning to forward time travel. Einstein's special theory of relativity is the "gold standard" of theories, having withstood over 100 years of experimental verification. However, to date we have not been able to build a time machine to send larger objects, like humans, into the future.

This Story discusses time travel to the future. Backward time travel, based on Einstein's general theory of relativity, is also a theoretical possibility, but presents even greater obstacles, including numerous time travel paradoxes.

If time travel is possible where are time travelers where now in the past, present or future? Perhaps another timeline all together. "FBI Wants To Spy On Your Online Chats As They Happen"

To catch up to all that technology, the FBI is working with other members of the intelligence community to propose new legal snooping rules by the end of the year.

Protocols for off-the-record chats already exist, and will ensure that conversations remain only between known parties, without someone else eavesdropping. What's this mean? "Choosing Your Own 6th Sense"
Imagine for a moment that you could choose any superpower you wanted. If you’re the demonstrative sort, you might be tempted by something dramatic, such as Hulk-like strength or the ability to fly. Or perhaps you’d prefer something a little more discreet, like a self-healing body or the power to read minds. But why waste time dreaming about things that are impossible (for now, at least) when you can have a more modest superpower today, at a reasonable price?

That’s the premise behind a small but growing subculture of DIY biohackers, body hackers, grinders, and self-made cyborgs, who are taking advantage of widely available technologies such as tracking chips, LEDs, magnets, and motion sensors to give themselves with a sixth sense of sorts. Call them “practical transhumanists”.

The concept of implanting bionic devices is by no means radical or new in the medical field—just ask anyone with a pacemaker or an insulin pump. But the notion of healthy people sticking gadgets in their bodies for fun, profit, or sensory augmentation is a more recent phenomenon.

As low-tech as these types of devices are, they could be laying the groundwork for more powerful (and pervasive) human enhancements in the future. There will be money in it but some companies there is no interest in becoming a startup beholden to venture capitalists. They think that in order to preserve ownership of our bodies, we need to make sure this is open-source. If you think Apple has a problem with you jailbreaking your iPhone, wait until they’re responsible for your heart, just think about it...

LivesOn -- an artificial intelligence service that aims to blur the lines between life and death, attracting 7,000 volunteers before its launch. LivesOn is a digital robot that would analyse a user’s output, learning about likes and language. A separate “you” would exist as an online twin, ultimately outliving the real you.

For ages we have often buried our dead with items and treasures to carry them through the afterlife. Here in modern times nothing has changed, as in this case were giving them twitter. So when someone says that social media is dead, well in many ways it now is. Just think about it...

"Large Mosquitoes Poised to Strike Florida"
The Sunshine State, already home to man-eating sinkholes, invading Burmese pythons, swarming sharks, tropical storms and other disasters, can expect to see an explosion of shaggy-haired gallinippers (Psorophora ciliata), a type of giant mosquito.

Will insect repellents help to protect people from the dreaded gallinipper? Maybe, Kaufman said, though the pests may be more resistant to bug repellents — even those containing DEET — because of their large size.

If there's a silver lining to a possible invasion of gallinippers, it's the fact that their larvae are so ravenous they eat the larvae of other insects, including mosquitoes, thus reducing the populations of those pests. And they're not known to carry any diseases, though that may be small comfort Floridians. If you live in Florida well you may you have to do what this large mosquito does and "suck it up" - just think about it...

Scientists have turned on a web-based database specifically for robots, designed to let them share information about their behavior and environment.

Rapyuta has been developed by the European RoboEarth Project as a way of improving the learning ability of robots. It does this by giving them, essentially, their own internet of shared information, from both human beings and other robots.

This offers significant benefits to robots and humans alike. We've already given robots the world, well maybe it's time we give them the "world wide web" as well. Just think about it...

"Real Life Superheroes and Britain's Batman"
Real-life superheroes who patrol streets as crime-fighting vigilantes bored with their mundane lives, a growing number of self-styled superheroes have donned tight-fitting costumes and taken to the streets of Britain in a bid to fight crime.

Some real-life superheroes have been more successful though like Britian's own Batman! British authorities got an unexpected visit from Batman last week when the caped crusader strolled into a local police station and handed over a wanted criminal.

An unidentified man wearing a vintage style Batman costume, complete with cape and mask, has apparently been fighting crime in the City of Bradford, a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, in Northern England. Last week, he nabbed a suspect and delivered him straight into the hands of officers at the local police station.

While his costume was reportedly closer to what you might find in a Halloween shop than the sleek suit seen in Hollywood blockbusters, it certainly didn’t detract from his crime-fighting mission.

As for the curious Batman-attired vigilante, police have yet to determine his identity. It remains to be seen if Britain’s Batman will come forward or, in true superhero fashion, remain a mystery. Either way if your in need of help in England just flip on the Bat Signal, just think about it...

"Oscar Psychology"
This past Sunday, tens of millions of Americans tuned in for the finale of this year's awards season: The Academy Awards. But why exactly are we so drawn to the Oscars?

The answer, in part, is that we're social animals And, as such, we're more likely to focus our attention on the "alpha" males and females in the pack, whether they be royalty, heroes or, in this case, celebrities. These are people who we pay attention to because, in one way or another, they influence our lives. How they dress, how they speak, what they like, what roles they play -- they are profoundly influential ... These people are really so much a part of our cultural layers of who is important and who is less important.

Win or lose, the Academy Awards, at their most basic level, is a yearly tradition that gives people a chance to gossip with friends and connect with those around us. Though it has a deeper psychological meaning to it. It allows people to participate in a large-scale communal event perhaps even a ritual of sorts. It's also a chance to escape as these people are fantasy feeders, just think about it...

"Siberian Loch Ness Monster"
Unknown remains of a large creature have been found in Lake Labynkyr in Siberia which is 4,500 miles east of Moscow in the Siberian wilderness. For centuries, strange reports of a large, underwater creature have come from people living near the remote Lake. Now, a team of scientists from the Russian Geographical Society report they've found the skeletal remains of an animal that fits the description of the "Devil" of Lake Labynkyr, according to the Siberian Times, though skeptics have yet to be convinced of the legendary creature's existence.

On the bottom of the lake, using an underwater scanner, they discovered a large jawbone and skeleton. Despite their claims, the team brought no physical evidence of their purported find to the surface. Of course, considerable skepticism surrounds rumors of the Labynkyr "Devil" and any Vorota "monster," especially given the lack of any verifiable photographs, video or physical evidence.

For ages sightings and stories like this have been reported. We often fantasice about these mysterious creatures in our world that have yet to be discovered officially. In our deepest forests, highest mountains, oceans and like this story even in lakes. They captivate our imaginations and sense of wonder. Is it plausible? Sure just look at all the new species being discovered all the time in the depths of our vast oceans.

Could there be a huge monster lurking in the depths of this lake? Is there is a Siberain Lochness Monster? Well the mythology and legend are certainly real, if you want to know the answers you'll need to take a dive into the unknown, just think about it...

"Real Life Vampires?"
These days, vampires are a popular topic for books, movies, and video games. But Now, Turkish doctors have published a case report of a man who has assumed the role of a real-life vampire.

The 23-year-old married man apparently started out slicing his own arms, chest and belly with razor blades, letting the blood drip into a cup so he could drink it. But when he experienced compulsions to drink blood "as urgent as breathing," he started turning to other sources, the doctors said. Eventually leading him to stab and bite others in an attempt to get at their blood. The man, whose name and hometown were not revealed in the report, was arrested several times after stabbing and biting others to collect and drink their blood. He apparently even got his father to get him bags of the ghastly drink from blood banks, according to the report.

The doctors at a Hospital in southwestern Turkey, ultimately diagnosed the man with dissociative identity disorder (DID), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic depression and alcohol abuse. To their knowledge, the man is the first patient with "vampirism" and DID.

Throughout the ages and in popular culture we have often obsessed over vampires in books, movies and stories. But these real life vampires like in this story are mortal like you and I. They seem to have a real disease, a real desire for human blood. Luckily for society and for the patient, the bloody cycle has reportedly been broken. But between face-eating zombies and now blood-sucking vampires, all this world needs is a werewolf, and we’ll be set for real-life Hollywood horror. Just think about it...

"Asteroid Set for a Close Encounter with Earth"
The asteroid 2012 DA14, which will come within about 17,000 miles of Earth on February 15, is about half the size of a football stadium, and in a collision would generate an explosive energy equivalent to 2,500 kilotons of TNT. In comparison, the atomic bomb over Hiroshima that instantly killed more than 70,000 people released "merely" the equivalent of 17 kilotons of TNT. Seventeen-thousand miles seems like plenty of room, but in cosmic terms, it's an awfully close shave.

But don’t worry, it would not hit the earth, say astronomers at NASA. But it will be the first big object that is getting close to the earth since the regular sky surveys started in 1990. 2012 DA14 highlights Earth's vulnerability to mid-sized asteroids capable of delivering nuclear-sized blasts. If this asteroid hit Earth it'd have a devastating impact -- one that highlights Earth's vulnerability to a tough-to-detect mainstay of the cosmos.

If these near earth asteroids are of no threat to us, then why report on them? Why tell us and even so if we have no real warning and preventive system in place. It seems like conditioning in many ways to make us fear a non-threat, or maybe it is just to make us earth dwellers more aware. The asteroid problem can be easily handled -- so long as we know where the asteroids are well in advance. If you don't know where they are, the only warning sign is a flash in the sky and a tidal wave. Well then, heads up! Just think about it...

"Big Brother Software Tracks and Predicts Future Behavior"
If you have attracted the “wrong kind” of attention by the government, then the intrusive data-mining analytic software known as "Riot" - Rapid Information Overlay Technology and it may be able to figure out your next move before you make it. The U.S. defense giant Raytheon has developed a controversial software that uses social networking sites to track your movements, able to predict where a person will be and their future behavior. The RIOT software can gather vast amounts of personal information from social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.

Using Riot it is possible to gain an entire snapshot of a person's life – their friends, the places they visit charted on a map – in little more than a few clicks of a button. Riot can display on a spider diagram the associations and relationships between individuals online by looking at who they have communicated with over Twitter. It can also mine data from Facebook and sift GPS location information from Foursquare.

So many aspects of our lives are now online and often times we don't think about who could be watching and monitoring us. We've seen the acceptance of this type of technology by the public before and it's mostly consumer driven. To offer us a benefit, to sell us something we may like based on what we do and who we interact with online. It's quite clear this conditoning has led us down this road. Where everything is tracked and perhaps you are okay with it now, after all you've got nothing to hide right? Just think about it...

"How to Build a Hero"
By the end of next year, robots will walk into a disaster zone. They won't roll in on wheels or rumble in on treads. They will walk, striding across rubble, most of them balancing on two legs. Compared with human first responders, the machines will move slowly and halt frequently. But what they lack in speed, they make up for in resilience and disposability.

The catastrophe the robots will be walking into is, in fact, an obstacle course, built for the two-year-long DARPA Robotics Challenge, which launched last October. At stake is a $2-million prize, awarded to the team whose machine not only scores well in a head-to-head competition this December, but prevails at a second one in 2014. Bots will have to perform eight different tasks, demonstrating both mobility and manipulation skills, that might be required of human first responders.

Completing just a few of the competition's tasks would be a remarkable achievement. Nailing all eight of them would be something more. It could mean the birth of the viable humanoid, a machine that's both competent and robust. Such robots could go where mankind has gone before but shouldn't again, striding toward the toxic plume or the reactor in meltdown, into the fresh ruins of the built world. These robots could be our heroes, just think about it...

"Hollywood Drones"
Look, up in the sky. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a drone!

If the Motion Picture Association of America has its way, it soon could be a camera-equipped pilotless drone shooting the overhead chase scenes for Hollywood's action thrillers.

Howard Gantman, a spokesman for the MPAA, argues that drones are safer, cheaper, and easier to use for aerial shots than helicopters or cranes, and can be super useful for particularly crazy shots. Sure, some filmmakers are already using unmanned aerial vehicles for filming, but the legality of the issue is something of a gray area. The MPAA is pushing the FAA for full-on allowance of the practice so it can really "take-off" so to speak.

The main argument against this is that widespread commercial drone use could lead to all kinds of domestic spying, a privilege the government might like to keep to itself. Commercial drone use is a big can of worms, inside and outside of the movie industry. Currently, the FAA plans on starting to issue private drone licenses by 2015, but they've still got to work out the details of who should be allowed to get them. If the MPAA has anything to say about it, filmmakers will definitely be on that list.

"UFO's on the Moon?"
Scientists, Astronauts and YouTube Users Report Strange Sightings
People claim to videotape UFOs in the sky above Earth and on the moon. They also spot unusual-looking objects in NASA camera feeds at the International Space Station.

Many odd things have been seen by amateur and professional astronomers on the moon over decades, and YouTube affords the opportunity to look at these alleged UFOs flying across, toward and away from our nearest astronomical neighbor. Lunar anomalies are not new phenomena however. They've been reported by astronomers going back to the 1700s.

Since the dawn of mankind we have always looked to the moon with fascination and wonder. Maybe We share a link to it, a connection perhaps. The next time you look up at the moon, you may wonder what is really up there? Is it simply a barren rock oribitng our planet or is it possibly the location of UFO bases? Is it that far fetched to think? I mean you or I have never been there so we truly don't know, all we can do is keep our eyes on the skies. The big encounter that many hope for could come from our neighbor the moon, and not some far off world just think about it...

"DNA Gun for Tagging Criminals"
The DNA gun that can invisibly tag criminals for weeks after a riot. DNA pellets can tag clothes and penetrate through to skin - staying there for weeks which Allows police to tag troublemakers during riots. Officers can then use the trace to place suspects at the scene of a crime using UV readers or sniffer dogs to find those tagged.

The SelectaDNA High Velocity System works like it sounds--it shoots people with pellets containing a unique DNA fingerprint. Unlike rubber-pellet guns, Tasers or tear gas canisters, the technology does not deter or disable the suspect--he or she can get away seemingly unscathed. But later, authorities can track down the suspect and arrest him or her “at a less confrontational time for officers,” according to the company. Portable readers equipped with ultraviolet light scanners would be able to verify the synthetic DNA.

"Humanoid Robot Toddler"
Anyone who has witnessed the development of a newborn into a toddler knows that babies progress fairly quickly from making seemingly random, spastic body movements to interacting with the world in what seems a much more natural way--through touching and grabbing as well as through social cues, like smiling, grimacing, and other facial expressions. Now we’re getting our first real glimpse of a multidisciplinary project mashing up robotics, neuroscience, computer vision, developmental psychology, and machine learning, a project led by University of California San Diego researchers has created Diego-san, a robotic one-year-old that learns to control its body and interact with others the same way a human baby does.

At four feet 3 inches tall and 66 pounds, Diego-san isn’t a perfect physical analog for a toddler (miniaturizing all of the parts would have driven Diego-san’s price tag way up), but his 44 pneumatic joints and the 27 moving parts in his extremely life-like face make for a humanoid that can mimic human movements--at least those of a one-year-old.

Do you remember how you first interacted with others and objects around you? How did you perceive reality and what helped you understand it? These are just some of the questions that these robots will help us understand in the future. Another example of robots teaching us about ourselves and in many ways they learn from us. They mimic us and that may have you wondering: then just really what is that teaching the robot? Just think about it...

"Asteroid Mining One Step Closer to Reality"
Encouraged by new space technologies, a growing fleet of commercial rockets and the vast potential to generate riches, a group of entrepreneurs announced recently that they planned to mine the thousands of near-Earth asteroids in the coming decades. The new company, Deep Space Industries (DSI). they are aggressively going after what Mark Sonter, a member of DSI's board of directors, called "the main resource opportunity of the 21st century."

Prospecting using miniaturized "cubesat" probes the size of a laptop will begin by 2015, company executives announced. They plan to return collections of asteroid samples to Earth not long after.
There are some 9,000 asteroids described as "near-Earth," and they contain several classes of resources that entrepreneurs are now eyeing as economically valuable. Elements such as gold and platinum can be found on some asteroids. But water, silicon, nickel, and iron are the elements expected to become central to a space "economy" should it ever develop. Water can be "mined" for its hydrogen (a fuel) and oxygen (needed for humans in space), while silicon can be used for solar power systems, and the ubiquitous nickel and iron for potential space manufacturing.

DSI's prospecting spacecraft will be called "FireFlies." The FireFlies will hitchhike on rockets carrying up communication satellites or scientific instruments, but they will be designed so that they also have their own propulsion systems. The larger mining spacecraft to follow have been named "DragonFlies."

Although there is little competition in the asteroid mining field so far, DSI has some large hurdles ahead of it. While these potential space entrepreneurs are confident they can physically lay claim to resources beyond Earth, there remain untested legal issues.

The United Nations Space Treaty of 1967 expressly forbids ownership of other celestial bodies by governments on Earth. But American administrations have long argued that the same is not true of private companies and potential mining rights.

These developments would help humanity extend its reach throughout the solar system, a necessary step along the path to interstellar flight, experts say. With asteroid mining there are vast challenges and risks ahead, but equally there could be an equally vast potential—both financial and societal. - Just think about it...

"Want To Colonize Mars? Applications Now Being Accepted"
NASA astronauts all have military backgrounds, and familiarity with supersonic aircraft is all but a requirement, the first humans on Mars could be average civilians.

The Mars One project, a not-for-profit organization that seeks to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars in 2023, is now accepting applications. And all that is required at this stage is that the applicant be over the age of 18.

Naturally, the spots are limited, so the organization says it is looking for individuals who “have a deep sense of purpose, willingness to build and maintain healthy relationships, the capacity for self-reflection and ability to trust. They must be resilient, adaptable, curious, creative and resourceful.” Candidates are also expected to commit to a minimum of eight years extensive training.

Mars One plans to fund their endeavors largely through a global reality television event following astronaut selection through the settlers’ first years on Mars. So far, the company says, more than 1,000 interested applicants have gotten in touch. The move, by the way, is permanent. There are no plans to return the pioneers to Earth.

When you think of traditional space travelers and exploration you may associate it with astronauts,scientists and now even robots . Though in this case the first inhabitants of another planet other than Earth will be your average Earthling and hopeful reality television star, just think about it...

"The U.S. Department of Energy to Tackle Rare Earths Shortage"
With China once again playing games with the rare earth materials it largely holds sway over, the US Department of Energy today said it would set up a research and development hub that will bring together all manner of experts to help address the situation. The DOE awarded $120 million to Ames Laboratory to set up an Energy Innovation Hub that will develop solutions to the domestic shortages of rare earth metals and other materials critical for US energy security.

Rare earth materials are used in many applications for their magnetic and other distinctive properties and include 17 elements. The materials are used to build everything from wind turbines, hybrid-vehicle batteries, weapons guidance systems, oil refining catalysts, computer disk drives, televisions and monitors, compact fluorescent light bulbs and fiber optic cable. At issue is the fact that China controls some 95% of the world's rare earth materials. In a report on rare earth materials in 2011, the Government Accountability Office said rebuilding the US rare earth supply chain could take up to 15 years and is dependent on several factors, including securing capital investments in processing infrastructure, developing new technologies, and acquiring patents -- many of which are held by international companies.

These technologies and products we have become accustomed to, require these rare Earth materials to make and perhaps we take that for granted. They can't last forever and in many ways are used as another tool for global control. These Earth materials will lead us further into space as well. So precious and critical to our existence these are the spices of life, just think about it...

"Drones going Mainstream"
Dozens of companies have sprung up in the last few years making remote controlled, mini-aircraft mounted with cameras, that are increasingly being used for commercial and even entertainment purposes.

Law enforcement agencies and border patrol are using them to keep tabs on suspected scofflaws. Journalists and sports photographers use them in lieu of expensive helicopters. Real estate agents employ them for aerial photos and video. Wildlife researchers and search-and-rescue outfits are using them or studying the potential. Even the utility industry is interested in having them hunt for downed power lines after a storm. Just recently a Japanese company released plans for a private autonomous security drone. The Japanese security company plans to rent out a private drone that takes off when intruder alarms are tripped and records footage of break-ins as they happen. There is also a growing market for smaller, simpler drones marketed to kids and adults for recreational use. For example, the Parrot AR Drone, has a range of about 160 feet, is controlled by a smart phone app, and can be bought at Toys R Us.

But the spread of the new technology is also raising a host of new issues. While the American Civil Liberties Union is still finalizing its position on drones, the group has some reservations about how the technology could infringe on citizens' rights. But industry advocates say it's not just the government that should have access to this technology. Civilian drones represent a chance for citizens to monitor authority.

Whether we approve of them or not, drones are now going mainstream. One day they will be commonplace and they are slowly but surely invading our airspace. The technology and uses for these machines are evolving and in this case literally the sky is the limit, just think about it...

"Military Human Enhancement Ethics"
The U.S. military is already using, or fast developing, a wide range of technologies meant to give troops what California Polytechnic State University researcher Patrick Lin calls “mutant powers.” Greater strength and endurance. Superior cognition. Better teamwork. Fearlessness.

But the risk, ethics and policy issues arising out of these so-called “military human enhancements” — including drugs, special nutrition, electroshock, gene therapy and robotic implants and prostheses — are poorly understood. In a new 108-page report prepared for the Greenwall Foundation the many risks are outlined along with some of the many human enhancement projects recently or currently pursued by militaries worldwide.

To be safe, the report authors propose that the military consider several rules when planning an enhancement. Is there a legitimate military purpose? Is it necessary? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? Can subjects’ dignity be maintained and the cost to them minimized? Is there full, informed consent, transparency and are the costs of the enhancement fairly distributed? Finally, are systems in place to hold accountable those overseeing the enhancement?

The authors strongly advise the Pentagon to begin working to develop a moral-ethical and legal framework for regulation of military human enhancement technologies. They write: “In comic books and science fiction, we can suspend disbelief about the details associated with fantastical technologies and abilities, as represented by human enhancements. But in the real world — as life imitates art, and 'mutant powers' really are changing the world — the details matter and will require real investigations, Just think about it...

Enhanced Warfighters Risk, Ethics, and Policy Report

"Simulating the Simulators"
What if everything -- all of us, the world, the universe -- was not real? What if everything we are, know and do was really just someone's computer simulation?

Martin Savage, professor of physics at the University of Washington, Zohreh Davoudi, one of his graduate students, and Silas Beane of the University of New Hampshire, would like to see whether they can find traces of simulation in cosmic rays.

In Savage's proposal, the discovery that reality was virtual came when unexpected errors showed up in life, demonstrating imperfections in the simulation.

Two other questions arise. One is whether it is conceivable that computers powerful enough to simulate our hugely complex universe ever will exist. If so, it likely will be very far in the future.

The second question is linked: Will it ever be possible to simulate human consciousness? After all, we run around thinking and feeling.

For generations, science fiction books -- and some science books -- have hypothesized inserting our consciousness into computers so that we essentially live forever. We are aware of ourselves, aware of our bodies, aware of what is outside of our bodies. Human consciousness is almost indescribably complex. Is it possible for the simulated to discover the simulators? Well you need to ask yourself are you going to take the red pill or blue pill, just think about it...

"Deceptive Robots"
Squirrels have a habit of storing acorns and other nuts in various spots, then patrolling those stashes. But what happens if another opportunistic squirrel shows up to steal the bounty?

The stash-owning squirrel fakes out the would-be thief, “checking” fake cache sites to throw the invader off the trail. Now researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have endowed robots with the same ability.

This could have great practical value in military situations, the researchers say. Say a small wheeled robot is guarding an ammunition cache, for instance. It can perceive a threat from a visitor--robot or otherwise--and put on a little deceptive show. The robot could change its patrolling strategies to deceive humans or another intelligent machine, buying time until reinforcements are able to arrive.

From the Trojan Horse to D-Day, deception has always played a role during wartime. In fact, there is an entire Army field manual on its use and value in the battlefield. There are serious ethical questions regarding robot deception behavior with humans. When these research ideas and results leak outside the military domain, significant ethical concerns can arise, just think about it...

"Big Brother in Your Living Room"
Earlier this month, news came out that Verizon applied for a patent to create a DVR sometime in the future that has cameras and microphones that can see and hear what you're doing and saying, while watching TV. Sounds, actions, food choices, and your ethnicity -- all tracked by the DVR -- will influence what you see in your commercial breaks. Google TV, Microsoft, Comcast, and now Verizon have all submitted patent applications to create televisions and DVRs that will watch you as you watch TV.

If Verizon proceeds with its plans, the technology may bring Big Brother into the households of millions of Americans, giving the tech company a strategic advantage over what Americans watch on their devices.

The company would always know whether a user is “eating, exercising, laughing, reading, sleeping, talking, singing, humming, cleaning, playing a musical instrument, performing any other suitable action, and/or engaging in any other physical activity during the presentation of the media content.

While the patent may not represent plans for current technology, it may provide a glimpse into the future – a future where every private action becomes the interest of major corporations, just think about it...

"Doomsday Panic"
Fears that the end of the world as we know it may be just around the corner December 21, 2012, marks the conclusion of the 5,125-year "Long Count" Maya calendar, which many have interpreted as meaning that is the date that the Earth, and its inhabitants, will be annihilated. With just days until the end of the Mayan calendar it has induced panic across the world.

Meanwhile in Mexico, where the ancient Mayan civilisation flourished, the end time has been seen as an opportunity. The country has organised hundreds of Maya-themed events, and tourism is expected to have doubled this year. Mayans themselves reject any notion that the world will end and suggest that is merely an end to one cycle and a beginning to another, a new age if you will.

What are all these people so concerned about? Well High levels of anxiety are symptomatic of the rapidly evolving global civilization in which the population, energy consumption and debt are growing exponentially as indeed is their toxic fallout, just think about it...

"Invisibility Cloaks"
A group of scientists have now cloaked an object perfectly the first time. The scientists were able to cloak a centimeter-scale cylinder and make it completely invisible to microwaves. Two researchers from Duke University named David Smith, and Nathan Landy have conducted research that involved reworking how the edges of their microwave cloak lineup to ensure that light passes around the cloak completely with no reflections. The result of the test was perfect invisibility. There is a catch, admittedly. The cloak works only on microwaves, not on visible light. And humans don’t “see” microwaves in the first place, making the idea of invisibility seem pointless.

Still, even if we mortals don’t see them, many essential devices do. Nearly every time you walk through security at an airport, your body is scanned with microwaves. Also, your cellphone, iPad and other devices make a similar kind of virtual eye contact with one another. So, even in the microwave realm, cloaking can potentially be used to remove obstacles from the paths of direct microwave communications (or hide things we don’t want detected).

More important, microwaves are part of the same electromagnetic spectrum as visible light. In principle, if cloaks can be made to work at microwave frequencies, they might one day be made to work at visible wavelengths.

For defense applications, much of the research focuses on meta-materials to make platforms from tanks, planes and helicopters to light tactical vehicles invisible – at least to certain light and sound wavelengths. What excites scientists and Harry Potter fans alike, though, is that the microwave cloak proves there’s no theoretical limitation that would prevent someone from building a visible-light cloak.

There are some tricky technological barriers to work out. But in this case, at least, not seeing is believing. Just think about it...

"The Mannequins are Watching You"
It’s no secret that some companies track your online browsing activities to figure out what you're interested in so they can serve you targeted ads that you're more likely to notice. Now some stores are employing a new breed of mannequins equipped with facial recognition technology. So the Next time you go shopping it may not only be the overzealous sales assistant watching your every move - the shopfloor mannequins may be checking you out too.

The Italian company Almax SpA sells a mannequin called the EyeSee that has a camera built into one of its eyes that ports data into facial recognition software that can tell the age, gender and race of people walking by. With such data, retailers can pivot store layouts, displays and promotions to better market to whatever demographic is checking out a certain area.

If the thought of mannequins “seeing” you is a troubling thought, you might as well get used to the idea. Online companies such as Facebook, Google and Apple have been using the technology for a while to identify people in photos. Not only that, the FBI has started rolling out its $1 billion biometric Next Generation Identification (NGI) system, a nationwide database of mug shots, iris scans, DNA samples, voice recordings, palm prints, and other biometrics collected from more than 100 million Americans and intended to help identify and catch criminals. The FBI has been piloting the program with several states and by the time it’s fully deployed in 2014 it will have at its fingertips a facial recognition database that includes at least 12 million photos of people’s faces.

So Store mannequins are meant to catch your eye. Soon, you may catch theirs, just think about it...

"Retinal Implants"
Researchers at Second Sight, the company that created the Argus II, have altered the device for use in a novel and potentially significant way. As they report in an article published this week in Frontiers in Neuroprosthetics, they’ve connected the implant to a computer that produces digital braille patterns, allowing them to directly stream braille onto a blind patient’s retina.

The continued development and miniaturization of optical and computer technology has allowed engineers to create devices like the Argus II: a retinal prosthesis that uses a small camera, a computer and a series of electrodes surgically implanted on a blind person’s retina to convert the world around them into electronic impulses that enter the brain.

This kind of application of a retinal implant could revolutionize reading for the blind and visually impaired. Just as traditional tactile braille opened up an entire world of written text to blind people in the early 1900s, storing books as digital braille for retinal implants could do the same for text in the 21st century.

As the technology is improved and refined, it could become cheaper and give everyday access to visual text and so much more to those without vision. Retina and bionic eye implants will aide those with disabilities when it comes to eye sight but hese kinds of technologies are always accepted by the general public as a "benefit". When you realize this you'll "see" that we are edging closer to a bionic society and it doesn't begin or end with eyesight, just think about it...

"Police Drones"
We may associate drones as flying machines but a drone can be used on city streets as well. Law enforcement agencies across the US are lining up to be among the first to use drones to serve and protect, as unmanned vehicles are likely to replace the traditional cop cruiser in just a few short years.

In places like California, Texas and Washington State, police officers in recent weeks have intensified their demands for surveillance drones, a necessary addition they say to their arsenal of tools to help thwart crime. The Federal Aviation Administration has yet to finalize plans to put drones in US airspace, but by the end of the decade as many as 30,000 UAVs are expected to be soaring through the sky.

By 2025, those drones are predicted to take the place of the police patrol car as unmanned vehicles operated by cops are being considered a likely inclusion on our roads of tomorrow. Leading up to this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, carmakers were asked to put together prototypes showing what they envision highway patrol vehicles to look like in the year 2025. The car show’s organizers asked designers to develop a vehicle that “should empower highway patrol officers to meet new demands and effectively both ‘protect and serve’ the public while considering not just enforcement needs but emission concerns, population growth and transportation infrastructure.

The winner of this year’s design challenge will be announced later this week in Los Angeles. As you can tell from the concept art gallery associated with the link to this story, the designs are built more for Hollywood than a real police force. Even so, they show that autonomous vehicles have very much entered the public imagination and the seeds have been planted. If anything, the action-movie feel of most of them is a little unsettling especially in light of the very real debates over militarization of the police force, just think about it...

"Mind-Controlled Robots"
It's been speculated—in big budget movies, no less—that one day mankind will never leave its computers, and will instead explore the world through virtual reality and robots.

Researchers at the CRNS-AIST Joint Robotics Laboratory have created an android that can be controlled using thoughts alone. The system requires that a patient concentrate their attention on a symbol displayed on a computer screen (such as a flashing arrow). An electroencephalography (EEG) cap outfitted with electrodes reads the electrical activity in their brain, which is interpreted by a signal processor. Finally, the desired command is sent to the robot to carry out. With training, the user can direct the robot's movements and pick up beverages or other objects in their surroundings.

The technology could one day give a paralyzed patient greater autonomy through a robotic agent or avatar. No doubt patients would feel empowered and liberated by this technology, but does it open the doors to more sinister technology? I guess it depends on how it is used. In this case, the human operator still has the control over the robot. It's not mind over matter, but mind over machine and robots performing task for humans could be beneficial in many applications. You have to "literally" just think about it...

"Killer Robots"

Hollywood-style robots able to shoot people without permission from their human handlers are a real possibility. The Humans Right Watch Group said in a report Nov. 19 that these robots must be banned before governments start deploying them.

The report “Losing Humanity” — co-produced by Harvard Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic — also raises the alarm over the ethics of the looming technology. Calling them “killer robots,” it urges “an international treaty that would absolutely prohibit the development, production, and use of fully autonomous weapons.

The problem with handing over decision-making power to even the most sophisticated robots is that there would be no clear way of making anyone answer for the mistakes. If a robot goes wrong, who’s accountable? It certainly won’t be the robot.

The robot could take a bullet in its computer and go berserk. So there’s no way of really determining who’s accountable, and that’s very important for the laws of war, just think about it...

"Star Wars or Star Peace?"

35 years after George Lucas’s Star Wars was released, there is a greater possibility of a space battle outside the realm of Hollywood. Space has become a central part of the military and defense policies in many of the world’s biggest countries.

Wars of the future are expected to involve a lot of orbiters to ensure a country’s security: satellite reconnaissance, warning, forecasting and targeting systems – objects which themselves will need to be defended and armed. So it is only a matter of time before orbital systems are developed that will be able to independently hit targets in space, in the atmosphere or on the Earth itself.

In space is one of the few areas where there are no borders. Introducing arms to space, will it upset the balance in the world? It would seem that Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo, one of the most important characters in the Star Wars films, was right when he said that the main secret of the film’s success was that it was “not about space, but about people; this is primarily a film about human relationships.”

It is up to us humans to decide whether space shall remain as a peaceful realm or whether it will become another arena for military conflict, just think about it...

Clones and 'Handpicked Genes'
How do you feel about cloning and genetic engineering? Some feel it crosses the moral boundaries of society, others lean towards the opinion of that this is the attempt of scientists trying to "play god".

Scientist George Church envisions a world where traits are pre-determined by parents for their offspring — children created via cloning technology to create ‘better’ humans. He also claims to be creating Neanderthal cells within his laboratory, holding an inventory of Neanderthal ‘parts’ across the lab space. In the near future, he even plans to ‘create’ a Neanderthal baby within his lab.

George Church is an American molecular geneticist. He is currently Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, Professor of Health Sciences and Technology at Harvard and MIT, and a core faculty member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University. He's widely regarded as a pioneer in personal genomics and synthetic biology.

Church thinks that it’s only a matter of time until someone injects an argument into the mainstream media that allows for full-scale cloning technology to be unleashed upon the world. At some point, someone will come up with an airtight argument as to why they should have a cloned child. At that point, cloning will be acceptable. At that point, people will already be choosing traits for their children. And as for those with ‘faulty’ genetics, they may actually not even be allowed to reproduce.

No matter what our personal beliefs are these technologies will always almost be accepted into society if they are made to benefit us. In this case, made to give us better lives, help us live longer and even be disease free. Imagine the "perfect" human. The ideas of cloning and genetic modification may bring a sense of fear to us but why? Since these types of technologies are developed to benefit people not hurt them. Perhaps it's not the technology and science we need to fear but the people and corporations that will eventually be using it, just think about it...

"Mind's Eye Surveillance"
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon have created intelligent software that will identify human activities in videos and then predict what might happen next. This is known as the 'Mind's Eye' program is sponsored by DARPA's Information Innovation Office.

Previously on Mind Set Daily we reported that, BRS Labs had the "smartest AI suspicious behavioral recognition system" with "the capability to learn from what it observes, remember activity patterns and adjust to changes in the environment, field of view and equipment - without manual interaction." Well Carnegie Mellon "researchers' approach is designed to help prevent crimes or dangerous events from happening." The newest visually intelligent software "system would eventually sound an alarm if it recognized that an action was not permitted, detecting anomalous behaviors.

It will likely be embraced in the future by the police and by the military to keep soldiers out of harm's way. It might have home security applications as well.

This is just one more surveillance technology designed for hunting suspicious behavior. Let's hope the researchers get it right because the future surveillance society world could have a very Orwellian no-privacy flavor, just think about it...

"Disaster Robots"
Today's disaster robots are small creatures, resembling insects and matchboxes more than people. Since they're so tiny, these bots can investigate disaster zones and report back to humans, but they can't do much more than that. Tomorrow's disaster robots? They'll be humanoid superheroes, driving around through rubble in utility vehicles, breaking down doors, attaching fire hoses, climbing ladders, drilling through barriers with power tools, and closing valves near leaky pipes.

Think about how useful an advanced robot could be in situations like Japan's Fukushima disaster--traversing through rubble to close leaky valves--and you have an idea of why this could be important.

As robots become more intelligent and are used more to help people in times of need such as natural disasters, then they are most likely to be more accepted into our society. We often call officials like fire fighters, police officers and first responders our heroes. But in the near future we may be referring to these robots as heroes not just people, just think about it...

Are you ready to have a microchip implanted into your brain?  That might not sound very appealing to you at this point, but this is exactly what the big pharmaceutical companies and the big technology companies have planned for our future.  They are pumping millions of dollars into researching "cutting edge" technologies that will enable implantable microchips to greatly "enhance" our health and our lives.

Initially, brain implants will be marketed as "revolutionary breakthroughs" that can cure chronic diseases and that can enable the disabled to live normal lives.  When the "benefits" of such technology are demonstrated to the general public, soon most people will want to become "super-abled".

The possibilities are endless. But so is the potential for abuse. This kind of technology has the potential to be one of the greatest threats to liberty and freedom in the history of mankind. At first these implantable microchips will be sold to us as one of the greatest "breakthroughs" ever, but in the end they could end up totally enslaving us. Just think about it...

"Data Mining"
When most people think of "Big Brother", they think of the FBI, the CIA, the NSA, the Department of Homeland Security and other shadowy government agencies.  Yes, they are definitely watching you, but so are many big corporations.

In fact, there are some companies that are making tens of millions of dollars by gathering every shred of information about all of us that they can and selling it for profit to anyone willing to pay the price.  It is called "data mining", and these data miners want to keep track of literally everything that you do.

As our society becomes even more integrated through the Internet, data gathering is going to become even more comprehensive. Eventually these complicated computer algorithms will be able to make very detailed predictions about your future behavior with a very, very high degree of accuracy.

Eventually we could end up living in a society that is much more oppressive than anything George Orwell ever dreamed of, just think about it...

"AlphaDog"

DARPA demonstrated two completed AlphaDog prototypes for Marine Corps.

The robot showed it was capable of walking through high brush, jogging, following a human, and getting up after falling down. Another benefit of the robot is that it can serve as a sort of mobile charging station for batteries, radios, and other handheld devices while troops are on patrol, DARPA said.

In development for several years, the robot still needs to undergo two more years of testing. During future tests, it will be embedded with the Marines for field exercises. DARPA is also looking to give the AlphaDog the ability to act on spoken commands.

Imagine a mule with the smarts of a trained animal. But in combat, a pack animal can get scared. This pet never does, just think about it...

"Mind-Reading Binoculars"
Military think tank (DARPA) has concluded field tests on next-generation binocular replacements that read human brain signals. Called the "Cognitive Technology Threat Warning System" it uses two discrete parts. A 120-megapixel camera, which is tripod-mounted and looks over the battlefield and the computer system, where a soldier sits in front of a computer monitor with an EEG headset on.

Images from the camera are fed into the computer system, which runs cognitive visual processing algorithms to detect possible threats. In short, these binoculars tap the human brain's ability to recognize objects.

Other EEG-enabled devices we have mentioned on Mind Set Daily include a headset that can be used to read your brainwaves to gather information. So in short, humans be warned: we're now one step closer to becoming cyborgs, just think about it...

"Zombie Apocalypse Training"
Next month, a security firm "Halo Corp." will incorporate zombies into a disaster-crisis scenario at the company's annual Counter Terrorism Summit in San Diego. HALO is composed of former military special operators as well as intelligence and national security experts.

The "zombies" will harass the troops, first-aid teams and medical responders participating. The idea is to challenge authorities as they respond to extreme medical situations where people become crazed and violent, creating widespread fear and disorder.

Zombies was a word used a lot to describe a rash of incidents involving cannibalistic attacks last year. Now we have training for a zombie crisis. Combine that with the buzz of the world ending in 2012 and you have yourself a zombie apocalypse, just think about it...

Innovega Inc, which is developing the iOptik augmented reality contact lens. This device will allow people to surf the Internet unencumbered by glasses. iOptik uses nanotechnology to enhance your vision to see both what's in front of you and information gleamed from the 'Net.

In April of this year, Innovega signed a contract with the Defense Department to develop a prototype of its iOptik system. The contacts work in conjunction with special glasses that project images onto the wearer's lens, which could allow soldiers on the ground to see images beamed down directly to them by drones or satellites.

"Internet Off Switch"
The inventor of the world wide web has denied there is an "off switch" which could turn off the internet across the globe. Speaking at the launch of the first ever global league table, the computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee said: "The way the internet is designed is very much as a decentralised system.

At the moment, because countries connect to each other in lots of different ways, there is no one off-switch, there is no central place where you can turn it off."

Even without the proverbial central off switch, governments continue to look for ways to control and monitor Internet communication. When you control the press, when you control television, radio or now what you might call the web, all the transactions of knowledge that flow between people, individuals and countries, when information is not allowed in or out of a country and firewalls are put around that.

Then the world wide web is not so free much less "world wide", just think about it...

"News Gathering Drones"
The FAA has begun writing licensing regulations and safety requirements that would allow drones to be used for purposes including newsgathering by 2015. They would be a less costly and potentially more capable replacements for manned helicopters.

Some say the potential for using drones is just like the potential for using any other type of newsgathering equipment, whether it would be for helicopters or mobile news vans or hidden camera equipment, all those are tools of the trade and perhaps the drone is no different.

EPIC has petitioned the FAA to make the drone licensing process completely transparent and to hold licensees accountable by detailing how, where and why they plan to use drones.

Requiring drone operators to inform the FAA, as well as the public. Footage unintentionally captured by a drone on the way to cover, say, a crime or disaster scene, could be subject to approval, or deletion, under such a plan.

The way journalists see it, however, those sorts of restrictions are a threat to the freedom of the press. Some would argue that these news broadcasting drones could be a threat to the freedom of the people, just think about it...

Smart technology seems to be in everything we use these days. Appliances, cars, phones and tablets for example. But did you ever imagine "smart carpet"? Well this isn't your imagination as researchers from the U.K. have developed a magic carpet of sorts, well smart carpet more like it as it is packed with sensors. These sensors can monitor your steps, sense patterns and even tell what kind of shoes you are wearing!

The smart carpet uses embedded fibers and electronics to detect a person's walking patterns. Some of the applications this is being developed for is in hospitals or for the elderly as it can sense when somebody falls on the floor and therefore call for help. Other applications could include security for the household as well.

Security researchers have used cheap Emotiv headsets to capture people's subconscious responses to stimuli and use them to uncover data directly from their subjects' brains. It's a theoretical risk to privacy and security that could become significant with further advances in technology, just think about it...

"Behavior Recognition Systems at RNC"
Tampa police will be using behavior recognition surveillance cameras and specialized software at the Republican National Convention.

A system known as "AISight" developed by BRS Labs will used to track patterns of behavior, analyze environments and the objects and people within in it.

This system will be build up a memory of these events and then compare the objects and behaviors to past memories to see if anything is out of the ordinary.

Tampa Police hopes that the system encourages protestors to behave since they know they're being watched and profiled.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency known as (DARPA) has a new robot and it's a tiny soft body type robot. It can change colors like a hameleon and blend in to it's environment. Because of it's small and silicone soft body design it is able to fit into small places, blend in and even change temperature.

This idea is inspired by nature and how certain animals can blend into their environments. This technology is still in the early stages of development and will be used for a multitude of applications in the near future.

NYPD is partnering with Microsoft to develop a new Domain Awareness System. This law enforcement tool will aid in pre-crime screening and monitoring public safety data streams.

"Avatar Border Patrol Officer "
The US Border Patrol and Customs have a new officer to aid in screening people crossing the border from Mexico to Arizona. This isn't any normal officer as it is an avatar, a virtual border patrol avatar officer residing in a kiosk.

It screens and interviews people and can use speech recognition and various ways to analyze your behavior patterns. It flags certain patterns and suspicious behavior. After this kiosk's performance is analyzed in ongoing tests, more features and sensors will be added to enhance the avatar and the use of these will be expand.

Researchers in London have developed a prototype detector that can use wi-fi signals to see through walls. It's known as a passive radar system. This see through the wall technology has many potential uses good and bad.

Wi-Fi radio signals are found in 61 percent of homes in the U.S. and 25 percent worldwide. The privacy concerns are evident, however those are often over shadowed by the benefits we are sold from this technology.

In the wake of the recent Aurora, Colorado shootings many issues and debates have come back to the forefront when it comes to gun control and gun laws. But will gun laws stop people like James Holmes?

The evidence shows that even if he hadn't got his hands on guns he would've blown up his victims with bombs and other means. A lot of the weapons and gear he purchased was over the internet as well. With easy access to military arms and equipment are we in an arms race with psychopaths? Why do we feel the need to arm ourselves?

These reports also indicated that they took these investigations seriously and came up with several possibilities of why we are or could be visited. In 1995 a report said: “If the sightings are not of this Earth then their purpose needs to be established.

There has been no apparently hostile intent and other possibilities are: a) military reconnaissance b) scientific c) tourism.”

A new startup, IDair has developed a new fingerprint scanner system called (AIRprint) that can scan your fingerprints from up to 20 feet away. No longer will you need keycards and other various forms of identification as this scanner can identify you through a database once it scans your fingerprints.

Other identification technology like facial recognition software can be added on to enhance the scanner. Not only is this is appealing to law enforcement agencies but also in the commercial sector as well.

Researchers in Austrailia are working on a prototype bionic eye and plan on testing it as soon as 2013. This device will first be aimed at helping patients with various eye conditions. It would attach to glasses and act as a retina. The retina device then links to a chip implanted in your brain which stimulates vision processing centers in the brain. Perhaps this is just the beginning developments of what we all could eventually become, "bionic"

This chip would could allow your mobile device to see through walls and other objects using that spectrum.
