The Music Video Showcase is back!

If you are a musician or a filmmaker in or near Mississippi (including Memphis, New Orleans, Mobile, Birmingham...), we need your videos! Submission is totally FREE. All we ask is that we receive them (formats listed below) by 11:59 p.m. on February 1.

OUR BORDERS: The Crossroads Film Festival is so named because of Jackson's location at the "Crossroads" of the South. Once again in 2012, we're extending our range... to Birmingham, Memphis, New Orleans, Mobile... If you can drive to Jackson in 3 hours, you can submit a video! (See map)
FREE TICKETS: Each music video *selected for Festival inclusion* by our screening committee will receive tickets to the Music Video Showcase -- one ticket for the director and one ticket for each member of the band. Crossroads will also offer bands a 15% discount on All-Access VIP passes to attend the full Festival (including workshops, films, after-parties...).

DEADLINE & FEES: All music videos must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CST on Wednesday, February 1, 2012. FREE to enter. Please submit a separate entry form for each video.

I have a confession to make. Until this year, I had never attended the Voodoo Music Experience. I know, I know—as a native New Orleanian, it’s shameful. Sacrilege, even. But thanks to the lovely folks at Mississippi Happening, I got the opportunity of a lifetime: I was sent to this year’s festival to cover the action and interview some amazing bands, so that our readers could get a feel for the experience as if they were right there with me. I had an amazing time, for sure!

So, here goes:

THE TOP TEN MOST AWESOME THINGS ABOUT VOODOO 2011

1. Seeing bands I love and have wanted to see.

Naturally, it makes sense that the best part of any music festival would be the music. At Voodoo, though, there is just so much to see—with six stages, it’s next to impossible to see every single performance that is going on. There is literally always a performance going on during the festival—which isn’t generally a problem, until two bands that you really want to see happen to have overlapping performance times. Which happened to me a lot, actually. That’s ok, though—I still got to see every band I wanted to see before I had to leave Sunday afternoon.

Mates of State

Husband-and-wife duo Mates of State wowed the crowd on Friday afternoon at Le Ritual, Voodoo’s main stage.

“Maracas” got everyone in a good mood.

Band of Horses

Band of Horses performed songs from their latest album, Infinite Arms. Front-man, Ben Bridwell.

Major Lazer

Major Lazer threw an amazing party during his set on the Le Plur stage, Friday afternoon.

Major Lazer wasn’t afraid to get a little up-close-and-personal with his fans. In fact, by the end of his set, several dozen fans were pulled on stage to dance.

Soundgarden

Soundgarden was the band to see Friday night at Le Ritual.

Fans and press alike were excited to see Soundgarden perform classics like “Black Hole Sun.”

Girl Talk

On Saturday night at the Le Plur stage, mash-up artist Girl Talk took to the stage dressed like Freddy Krueger.

It didn’t take long at all for the party to get kicking during Girl Talk’s set.

Girl Talk’s set was definitely a Voodoo-worthy blowout—a high-energy performance full of pyrotechnics, confetti, and costumes.

Blink-182

Blink-182 headlined Le Ritual on Saturday night. I nearly lost it when they played hits like “What’s My Age Again?” and “The Rock Show.”

Portugal. The Man

Portugal. The Man cooled things down at the Bingo! Parlour Le Carnival stage on Sunday afternoon.

Portugal. The Man played songs from their latest album, In the Mountain in the Cloud. This was the set I was most looking forward to during the entire weekend—it definitely lived up to my expectations!

2. Discovering bands that I am now obsessed with.

While some people are primarily concerned with just seeing the bands they know and love perform at festivals like Voodoo, I was most excited about getting to see bands I’d either just been introduced to or had never even heard of at all. Luckily, this year’s lineup provided a number of amazing opportunities to be exposed to great artists I otherwise probably wouldn’t have found on my own.

Other performers I saw over the weekend that I am now more than moderately obsessed with include: The Wombats, Peelander-Z, Fitz and the Tantrums, The Bangerz, and The Limousines.

3. Hanging out with some amazing musicians.

Part of my trip to this year’s festival included conducting some interviews with some bands for Mississippi Happening! I was excited to sit down and chat with these amazingly talented people—keep your eyes peeled for these upcoming stories, right here at MH!

Kora Konnection

Kora Konnection, a group of traditional African performers, delighted and educated its audiences Friday afternoon at the Preservation Hall stage.

I was thrilled to sit and talk with drummer Jeff Klein after Kora Konnection’s set.

Fort Knox Five

Before our interview with Fort Knox Five, we got to check out their quick performance at the Toyota Free Yr Radio tent.

I got to sit and chat with three of the four core members of Fort Knox Five, Steve Raskin, Jon Horvath, and Rob Myers.

Later on Saturday afternoon, I got to see Fort Knox Five in action during their set on Le Plur.

Happy Talk Band

New Orleans natives Happy Talk Band rocked the Bingo! Parlour Saturday afternoon.

I got to chat with them about their show coming up this weekend at the Ole Tavern on George Street in Jackson, MS.

Fishbone

Fishbone bassist, John Norwood Fisher, guitarist, Rocky George, & trombonist Jay Armant jam at the Bingo! Parlour on Sunday afternoon.

Fishbone’s Angelo is returned to the stage after a crowd surf. I was lucky enough to chat with Moore and Fisher at the festival.

4. Taking photos in the press pit.

On Sunday, photographer Clay Hardwick graciously gave me a chance to take photos from the press pit, so I could get to experience the festival from another perspective. Now, how could I pass that up?

GIVERS

I got to shoot the first song of Givers’ set on Sunday at the Bud Light /WWOZ stage. It’s surreal to get to photograph one of your favorite bands, for sure. After “Saw You First,” I had to bow out and leave the professional photography to Clay.

Givers put on a high energy show that Clay and I both had a lot of fun shooting.

After a (relatively) successful experience in the pit, Clay said I needed to experience photography from the big pit at the main stage, Le Ritual.

The pit at the main stage can get pretty crowded, especially during sets like Band of Horses.

We decided I would shoot the Odd Future set Sunday afternoon, so I could get the chance to photograph an exciting group. So Clay gave me a crash course in manual photography and sent me on my way.

Despite some slight hang-ups with the Odd Future set, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to photograph the group. I definitely learned a lot about photographing performers, and consequently, I’ve developed a profound respect for photographers and what they do.

5. Seeing some amazing art installations.

People tend to forget that Voodoo is not just about the music—while the music is a crucial part of the festival’s success, the overall experience is what the festival tries to offer its supporters. Large art installations can be found throughout the festival, and they certainly do add another level of interest and importance to the festival.

Giant mushrooms popped up around the Bingo! Parlour and Bud Light/WWOZ stages.

Artists worked on a large-scale collaborative piece all throughout the festival weekend.

Large mechanical statues were prominently displayed throughout City Park.

6. Shopping at some nifty boutiques.

Not only is the Voodoo Experience a great place to catch shows and view amazing art, but it’s also a good place to get your shop on! Dozens of local vendors offer everything from jewelry to hair extensions to voodoo dolls. Shopping at Voodoo is definitely a great way to support local small businesses!

7. Eating alligator for the first time.

Tastes like chicken.

8. Getting amazing ideas for costumes.

Halloween in New Orleans has always been one of my favorite times of the year, simply because you get to see a lot of humor and creativity… but put a few thousand music-loving festival goers in one place, and you see a slew of incredible (and incredibly funny) costumes. It’s just one more thing that adds to the overall charm and appeal of the Voodoo Experience.

9. Making new friends and catching up with old friends.

Aside from meeting talented artists through interviews, I also got to see several talented artists that Mississippi Happening considers dear friends.

Rotary Downs

I was happy to get to see our good friends, New Orleans staple Rotary Downs, perform at the Bingo! Parlour on Saturday afternoon.

I was also really glad I could catch up with Ronnie Numbers and Trixie Minx from The New Orleans Bingo! Show on Saturday night! (Luckily, this time, I didn’t have to do the robot.)

10. Being a part of something bigger than myself.

Last but not least, probably one of the most interesting aspects of the Voodoo Experience is the understanding that you’ve spent a weekend with thousands of complete strangers, yet each person will go home with memories of an experience shared by all. It’s simply remarkable to see so many people come together and share their love of music, art, and New Orleans.

The Greatest Show on Earth: The New Orleans Bingo! Show

On October 20^th, Jacksonians eagerly gathered to hear the mind behind Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk, speak at Hal and Mal’s while on his “Blow Your Brains Out” tour to promote his newest novel, Damned. The night, sponsored by Lemuria, promised to be devilishly entertaining, complete with local bands Bloodbird and Spacewolf, Hell-themed food from Jackson’s own Parlor Market, and Hell-themed drinks from Mississippi-based Cathead Vodka. But one of the event’s most entertaining components was a performance by The New Orleans Bingo! Show, an incredibly eclectic band from our neighbor to the south, New Orleans, Louisiana.

“We’re not a bar band,” Clint Maedgen says. “And we’re not Strawberry Shortcake, either.”

What exactly is The New Orleans Bingo! Show, then? “It’s a theatrical production,” says Clint, the troupe’s front-man singer and guitarist. “We have primarily three components: original music, we make our own movies, and we play live rounds of bingo. It’s definitely a theatrical presentation that we’re most interested in getting across. We’re not a bar band.”

The validity of Clint’s statement was made perfectly clear once the Bingo! Show took stage at Hal and Mal’s last Thursday—the atmosphere of the venue was decidedly not that of a bar. The stage had been converted to something else completely, dressed up like something out of vaudeville in honor of the evening’s myriad festivities. The Show’s musicians took to the stage one by one, beginning with cellist, Helen Gillet, followed by Keith Hajjar on drums, Lucas Davenport on keys, Michael Miller on bass, and of course, Clint on guitar and vocals.

Covered in black and white face-paint, Ronnie Numbers, one of the Bingo! Show’s clowns, roams the stage and audience with a bullhorn and a spotlight, acting as a sort of ringleader for this bizarre New Orleans circus. Also among the ranks of the Bingo! Show clowns are burlesque dancer, Trixie Minx, and the mischievous Mr. The Turk. The clowns dance, sing, mime, interact with the audience, run the rounds of bingo, and play a host of “different” instruments.

Aside from the usual suspects, The New Orleans Bingo! Show incorporates homemade instruments into its performances. Alongside electric guitars and cellos, members of the troupe play musical saws, theremins, air raid sirens, rubber chickens, and pots and pans, just to name a few. “We brought some cool toys. Just not all of them. Unfortunately, we have to leave most of our toys at home,” Maedgen says. Some of the toys the Show couldn’t bring to Jackson? Carburetors, abandoned toothbrushes, and an old broom discovered by the side of the road.

The New Orleans Bingo! Show’s performances are eclectic and full of energy—it’s obvious that the troupe is influenced a great deal by everyday things around them. “Take a blender and throw in a lot of different things, mix it up and you’ve got the Show,” Maedgen says. Don’t be fooled though—not everything makes it into the Bingo! Show blender. Only very specific things make the cut. Maedgen explains that the Show is, “Santa Sangre, mud hunting, Joel Grey’s character in Cabaret, a little bit of ABBA. Couldn’t do it without a little Conway Twitty in there. The way a jackhammer sounds when you’re downtown, three blocks away—the way it bounces off the buildings. How the fire truck will crank off in the French Quarter. Feel-good movies, like maybe Rocky. The color magenta—the color as it reflects off your retina and the experience that you have seeing the color magenta. Navy blue, black, Lucky Charms—that’s a big part of the show. A big part. Bacon when it’s sizzling in the morning and you’re still lying in bed. Maybe your mom’s making bacon. That’s a real Bingo! staple, right there. Get out of bed for some bacon and eggs. Maybe some biscuits. And maybe Charles Mingus.”

About halfway through their set, Ronnie Numbers, Trixie Minx, and Mr. The Turk distribute bingo cards to everyone in the audience. “Who wants to be a winner?” Ronnie screams into his bullhorn, getting the audience excited to play some bingo, but reminding them that “bingo is a relaxing game. That’s why old people play it. So relax!” Like the fluid motions of a well-oiled machine, Mr. The Turk draws the numbers and displays them on the Show’s projector system, while Ronnie calls out the numbers and banters with the crowd. “I-17—just one year away from being legal, people!”

Winners from the Bingo! Show’s games are given the special treatment for their efforts—I should know. I was among the three winners at last Thursday’s show. My prize? Being pulled onstage by Ronnie to dance the robot in front of the whole crowd.

Weirdly enough, my horrible dancing skills are not the craziest thing to have happened at a Bingo! Show performance. Clint explains, “Systematically, without a doubt, every show has at least one component which makes me stop and say ‘What is going on here?’” The most memorable moment: “Well, there was that lady that exploded. But I’ve been sworn to secrecy on that. They made me sign a waiver. I shouldn’t even be talking about it, right now. But it happened once.”

Luckily, no explosions took place Thursday at Hal and Mal’s—just some mild to moderate ego bruising. Nevertheless, the Bingo! Show’s set was a smashing success. Despite the fact Thursday night was The New Orleans Bingo! Show’s first performance in Mississippi, the troupe would love to come back for another show sometime in the future. Other plans for the Show include hopefully setting up shop and establishing the act in San Francisco, New York City, Berlin, Paris, Bangkok, Japan, and Clint’s ultimate dream--“maybe a thirteen-year residency in Hawaii at some point. That’d be fun.”

Until then, The New Orleans Bingo! Show continues to be a staple of the music scene in New Orleans, Louisiana. This coming Saturday, the Show will take stage in New Orleans’ City Park for this year’s VooDoo Festival. In the meantime, Bingo! Each year Jackson artists come together to present a cross section of the Jackson arts scene to the community. Everyone donates their time free of charge in order to offer this unique cultural event to the community for no admission. Guests will be treated to poetry, a variety of dance styles, stand-up comedy, a variety of musical genres, skateboarding, and visual art fare of sculpture, prints, painting, graffiti and more! Free food from area restaurants like Aladdin's and The Pizza Shack will also be provided!

There is no event like this in the state of Mississippi.

Their tunes, are just as catchy as their name, and if you give them a shot, you'll soon become a fan. Mississippi Happening doesn't generally like to write about how the music sounds; we prefer you listen to it and decide for yourself...since we dig independent thinking and opinions. comes to Mississippi for two nights: September 15/16

Thursday Sept. 15 @ Martin's (Jackson, MS)

Friday Sept. 16 @ Proud Larry's (Oxford, MS)

Rotary Downs creates an unlikely sound of noisy, fuzzy, psychedelic pop. Their 2006 release, Chained to the Chariot, was described by NPR as "a stunning collection of psychedelic art pop songs that plays like a brilliant mash up of Neutral Milk Hotel and Odelay-era Beck." When one imagines music from the Crescent City, brass bands, R&B, and jazz pianists may come to mind. The same year they were awarded #2 Best Unheard of Band in America by NPR.

Rotary Downs is challenging the comfortable construct of New Orleans music by making music that is simultaneously original and classically New Orleans. Chariot is a masterpiece with commentary on many different elements of life in South Louisiana and has quickly become a favorite among fans and critics.

In 2007, Rotary Downs had their television debut, featured in a Current TV episode about the band’s music and history. In 2008, Rotary Downs appeared on the Sundance Channel with a performance of “Sing Like the Sun” filmed live for an episode of “Architecture School” – a series about students building houses in New Orleans.

Rotary Downs had continued to build momentum in 2009, showcasing at the MIDEM World Music Conference in Cannes, France. Rotary Downs was named “Best Rock Band” for the 2nd year in a row at the Gambit Weekly’s Big Easy Awards. 2010 saw the release of their 4th full length album since 1999, “Cracked Maps and Blue Reports” put out on their own Rookery Records. The album has garnered “Best Rock Album” at the 2011 Offbeat Awards and the band has been touting the record on all coasts, just finishing up a West Coast tour and a recent December 2010 East Coast run that ended at Brooklyn Bowl in New York.

Mississippi Happening had the opportunity to interview Tiffany Lamson, vocalist and percussionist of the band GIVERS, an indie pop group from Lafayette, Louisiana. Their sudden success on Glassnote Records, (ie. label of Phoenix) has propelled them straight into the national spotlight. GIVERS has played several festivals across the country and completed a UK tour this summer, They are currently touring the U.S., set to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Below is an interview with GIVERS' Tiffany Lamson, a musician with an extensive performance history in Mississippi. She's played in the bands Rotary Downs (New Orleans) a few times and also as the drummer for Arbor Vitae (Lafayette, LA). She's a positive spirit and a strong supporter of music from the South. We admire her ambition, and are so excited to hear about her recent success. We hope you enjoy our interview with Tiffany Lamosn of GIVERS:

MH: How did you get started with the GIVERS?

Tiffany Lamson: I've known most of these guys since high school and/or during college. Also, we all played in some various Lafayette-based bands throughout those years. It came together more fluidly after this group formed randomly for a night of improvisation filling in a spot for a band that had cancelled last minute. We had a few more nights similar to that and I had recorded them on my distorted handheld digital recorder.. Listening back we decided to start making some recordings and I feel that's where it started to develop into something more.

MH: You've played in a few bands that have actually played in Jackson, MS prior to joining the GIVERS, ie. Arbor Vitae & Rotary Downs. What are some defining moments that you've had on your way to the GIVERS, with your other bands. How have they shaped you to be the musician that you are today?

Tiffany Lamson: I learned so much (and owe a huge chunk of lifelong thanks) due to the guys in ArborVitae first-off. They were the first real band I played in and felt belonging to. Tim Campbell and I would sing together for hours- he is amazing and taught me a lot about harmony and compromise/collaboration.. he was so kindly open to any suggestions I may have had, good or bad, and we always gave each others' ideas a chance. That was a beautiful thing because it took loads of patience and would deliver much more interesting and satisfying outcomes. It was like a honeymoon phase most the time since he was my first collaboration partner-- and same goes with guitarist Chad Viator. We all invested hours upon months into the music and each others' lives and they taught me what it was to be a family-band. They are still some of the most talented people I know. Rotary downs was similar but more established- they introduced me to a more career-orientated world of music; playing festivals, traveling, challenging practice and hardwork. Both had their place in instilling tools I use now probably subconsciously. I owe a lot to those people; they were gracious with their time and helped guide me through the rough years of finding my way. I plan on making some new music with Tim and Chad in the near future.

MH: What are the main aspects of touring that keep you on the road?

Tiffany Lamson: Funny you ask that because today is the first day of this tour...and I've probably laughed so hard I may have to change at the next gas station. That's one of the best things of the road- the connection you get with your band-mates--- more like family and friends than anything. We play a lot of pranks and jokes; it's important to keep things light-hearted as much as you can because the road can turn on you in a heartbeat if allowed.

They become my brothers and we go into the journey as a collective. Traveling absolutely opens the doors of perception. You realize things are out there that you never imagined or expected.. and you relinquish control. The experience factor is a key reason that keeps my love for the road strong. The road constantly, forcefully stretches you; reveals your strengths and exposes your weaknesses. A perfect time to reflect in the mirror of yourself. That ambition for more tends to become a driving force in my travels.

MH: You are a great percussionist and was the drummer for Arbor Vitae, do you see yourself hitting the drums in later releases and shows in the GIVERS?

Tiffany Lamson: Well, thanks.. Sometimes I forget that people even saw me in the outfit.

I actually do play some drums in this group but it's a customized standup kit. I've definitely had a resurgence of need to be behind a kit so I'm sure that'll make it's way in the set somehow. In this band, we are always encouraging each other to try new instruments, or in my case- return to some old ones.

MH: How do you feel about beating the odds of a southern musician born and raised in a small city and becoming a musician touring nationally and internationally on a large scope?

Tiffany Lamson: I can only imagine one word when this question arises and it always is gratefulness. We are blessed to be in this position and sacrifice everything we thought we knew about life to cater to this lifestyle and existence. Looking back, I really couldn't imagine any other way.

I think being from the south has it's benefits moreso nowadays- people are really starting to pay attention to what's goin on here for many reasons.. The filming outburst in the entertainment industry, television series that are focusing on "dumbing down" the southern regions, the ole natural disasters, the large musical reawakening, etc- America's eye are drifting towards the South and we get that opportunity to speak out and do it right. I believe if you put it all on the table with sincerity, passion, and ambition (and for the right reasons) then life grants you what you ask. Sometimes it has a funny way of showing it, but it's up to you how to react to it. I think I re-learn that everyday.

MH: To us southern artists trying to get our voice heard outside of our region, what would you say is your most source of inspiration and drive to get heard.

Tiffany Lamson: Inspiration seems to strike me when I stop searching for it. Every time I step back and see all my surroundings as unique experiences I can move at light-speed in, then I gain a bigger piece of myself that allows me to express my insides more; music happens to be the vessel that it chooses to come through. That is an energizing force pushing me to create.. Through that, I get closer to the source. I'd want anyone to seek that in themselves.. And I find it generally is achieved by being open and passionate.

MH: Do you plan on releasing any solo music in the future?

Tiffany Lamson: Yes actually, I did a solo Daytrotter session not too long ago that may come out within a couple months and also have plans to do some live performance filming in Louisiana.. Sort of a musical film-short. Most of my focus goes into GIVERS but there's also other parts of me that come out suited for a more somber or solo-esque outfit.

MH: With the sudden rush of success that you have received lately with GIVERS, how do you see the world and the music industry?

Tiffany Lamson: I could probably talk about that for awhile but i'll keep it short and end with spreading the notion that the best thing I've learned (although it may sound trite or cliche') is to always follow your heart and stay grounded. Some people in this industry will want to turn your creative outlet, passion, art.. into pure entertainment and or money. These are not the reasons for music to me.

The world is a vast place- getting to travel and explore it as of recent has set me in mood::: it makes ya step outside yourself. It's huge, because it makes you feel small. I encourage it; if I weren't playing music I'd still be finding a way to travel.

Hello Mississippians! We'd also like to say hello to: Brazil, Australia, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Canada, India, & France for taking an interest in Mississippi Happening online!

July is going to be a fun month! Summer is officially in full swing, and to boot, Mississippi Happening is bringing something new to our table. We are starting our "Bring The Music Home" series July 26. "Bring The Music Home" is an effort to bring touring bands to Mississippi for the sole purpose of encouraging networking opportunities for our local bands serious about taking their music outside of Mississippi.

July 26, we kick off this journey at Sneaky Beans in Jackson, MS with live performances!!!

We'll have The Forms from Brooklyn, NY. They run their own record label; so this is a great opportunity to come and ask questions about how they run it, book their nationwide tours, and generate a living doing what they love.

Also, if you are unable to make the show at Sneaky Beans, no worries, we'll have a Live Online VIDEOCAST of the whole show right here on the Mississippi Happening webpage!

A film-loving group that puts together a unique film festival in Tupelo that generates income for all filmmakers involved!

Hey! It's our 3rd year of Tupelo Underground. We didn't realize what a success it would be when we started and it just keeps growing.

I'm writing all of you local filmmakers (and associates of filmmakers) so that you can help us get out the word for submissions and also help us get people in the seats. We accept submissions from all over the world, but we do like to showcase our home talent.

So if you have something to submit, please do so. We don't have a limit on submissions and we don't charge a submission fee. This is a one day festival so keep in mind that we don't have time but for a few feature length films. (Deadline is May 31st)

Also, if you have something in the works that you'd like to submit that's NOT finished, please just let us know ahead of time so that we get an idea of who wants to be involved.

You can help in other ways too...promotion and helping to get sponsorship. We haven't yet sorted out where we're getting a PA. Sponsorship will get you a mention in the program.

As an added bonus, filmmakers, we split the profits (any money left after covering promotional materials, rental, etc.) with each film that we show after the night is over!

Mississippi is a great place to hone your skills as an artist. You have plenty of time to work out the kinks in your music, painting technique, filmmaking, photography, cooking...the list goes on and on. Mississippians love that we have all the resources any other artist in bigger cities hold, but without the distractions of a BIG CITY life. We may not be in the best location for promoting music, but with the recent accessibility of HD cameras and HD video editing software, we are now able to show our art to the world from the comfort of our home state.
