A host of Burn Model System (BMS) researchers will present papers and deliver lectures to advance the field of burn injury at the American Burn Association’s 51st Annual Meeting to be held April 2-5, 2019, in Las Vegas, NV. Below is a list of participants who have submitted conference presentation information to MSKTC. Additional information about ABA participation will be added to the Promoting BMS at ABA blog post as it is received. MSKTC produced a webinar titled Using Social Media to Promote Your Research; a recording of the webinar is available here: http://www.msktc.org/Model-Systems-Grantees/webinars. This webinar was designed to help the attendees understand the pervasiveness of social media; understand who uses social media; learn about the uses for different social media platforms; think about what they can do with social media; learn about the steps needed to manage social media; and see how a few Model Systems are effectively using their own social media. As a follow up to this webinar, researchers can develop a social media strategic plan using the following three tools developed by the MSKTC:

Guide for Developing an MSKTC Social Media Plan: This document is a go-to reference for researchers to navigate different social media platforms and to plan, execute, monitor and optimize their social media efforts;
MSKTC Social Media Development Workbook: This workbook accompanies the Guide to help researchers work through all aspects of a social media plan to communicate about their research;
MSKTC Social Media Development Content Calendar: This Excel sheet helps researchers map out their use of social media by adapting it to the frequency with which they plan to use social media.

In addition to the webinar and tools developed by MSKTC, a web clinic on social media analytics was held to review the types of analytics available for three platforms: Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Participants discussed how to use that data to inform and improve research dissemination and outreach through social media. The web clinic introduced best practices in using analytics, measuring engagement through analytics, creating data reports, and knowing what questions to ask of the researcher’s organization if they do not manage their own social media platforms. Carmen Tarleton, burn survivor and face transplant recipient, was the guest speaker at the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System (BH-BIMS) Lecture Series on November 12, 2013. Injured in 2007 by her estranged ex-husband, Ms. Tarleton was a patient at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital The audience, a combination of trauma survivors, healthcare providers and community members, was riveted as she spoke about overcoming adversity and finding happiness, forgiveness and peace. Following her talk, Ms. Tarleton candidly and thoughtfully answered questions posed by the audience and signed copies of her recently published book, Overcome. Are you the partner, family member, or caregiver of someone who sustained a burn injury in the past five years? Would you like to share your experience in research to help others in the future?

The Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC) is recruiting individuals over 18 years old who are the primary caregivers of someone who sustained a burn injury in the past five years. Participants will participate in an interview about caregivers’ health information needs. Participants will be compensated $20.

The study is funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) and conducted by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) and George Mason University. The Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System hosted a panel discussion about facing trauma and the road to recovery and renewal. Entitled, Reintegration after Burn Injury and Severe Trauma: Experiences and Strategies for Personal and Family Recover, this presentation featured survivors and be located at Shriners Hospital for Children-Boston. The presentation welcomed back Carrie Holmstrom, a young woman who at 16 survived a horrible auto accident; Brian Meyer, a Marine Gunnery Sergeant who survived a bomb blast during his third deployment in Afghanistan; Muji Karim, a young man who also survived an auto crash with his brother; and Diana Tenney and Jerry LaPerriere, who sustained serious injuries while burning yard waste at their home. Model System Treats Patients Following the Boston Marathon Tragedy

Boston Harvard Burn Injury Model System experts treated patients after the bombings at the Boston Marathon. At least 10 Boston area hospitals treated more than 170 patients following the bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15, 2013. At Massachusetts General Hospital, a 34-year-old man is the last bombing victim remaining and among a few of the most seriously injured in the attack not yet released from other hospitals or transferred to rehabilitation facilities. There were several Boston Marathon bombing victims that were treated at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, another BH-BIMS institution, right as the hospital prepared to relocate to a brand-new facility within days of the bombing. Spaulding continues to work with several patients, taking a team approach to rapidly restore function to each person based on their needs and to provide them with a sense of independence early on, addressing both their physical and psychological concerns.

Model System Researchers will Present at the American Burn Association 45th Annual Meeting

A host of burn model systems researchers will be participating in the 2013 ABA 45^th Annual Meeting in Palm Springs, California from April 23-26, 2013. Mary Elizabeth Murphy of the Pediatric Burn Injury Rehabilitation Model System will be acknowledged as this year’s ABA student scholarship recipient. Additionally, numerous model systems researchers will present papers and deliver lectures to advance the field of burn injury. Model System Launches New Website and Plans for Relocation

Model Systems Researchers Work Published in the New England Journal of Medicine

Drs. Jeffrey Schneider, Robert Sheridan, Shawn Fagan and Frederick Stoddard of the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System (BH-BIMS) co-authored a case report published in the New England Journal of Medicine titled Case 36-2012 — Recovery of a 16-Year-Old Girl from Trauma and Burns after a Car Accident. This article highlights the collaboration among clinicians of various disciplines to address the multidisciplinary needs of a patient who survived massive multisystem injuries including a 70% total body surface area burn, inhalation injury and amputations. With community reintegration as the ultimate goal, Dr. Jeffrey Schneider, Program Director of BH-BIMS, discusses the multistage rehabilitation process needed to recover from such a complex injury.
