The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke’s SCI 2020: Launching a Decade for Disruption in Spinal Cord Injury Research conference was held February 12-13, 2019, in Bethesda, Maryland. The goal of SCI 2020 is to initiate discussion across the SCI research community to launch a new decade of research that disrupts traditional barriers and brings about collaborative efforts to address the key research questions in spinal cord injury research. SCI Model System Program and MSKTC are partners of the conference.

Michael Boninger, MD, co-director of University of Pittsburgh Model Center on Spinal Cord Injury, was the Keynote Speaker. Session chair and facilitators included researchers from Southeastern Regional Spinal Cord Injury Model System (Edelle Field-Fote, PT, PhD; James Krause, PhD). Researchers from the following currently-funded SCI Model System centers led the conference dissemination efforts: Rocky Mountain Regional SCI System (Leslie Morse, DO) and Northern New Jersey Spinal Cord Injury System (Jeanne Zanca, PhD, MPT). A host of SCI model systems researchers will present and deliver lectures to advance the field of spinal cord injury at the 2017 American Spinal Injury Association Scientific Meeting held in Albuquerque, NM from April 26-29, 2017. The following SCI model systems researchers have submitted conference presentation information to the MSKTC.

Spaulding New England Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center (SNERSCIC)

Mary D. Slavin, PhD, will present the Stephen M. Haley Memorial Lectureship, "The SCI Pediatric Activity Measure, and the Pediatric Measure of Participation," on April 26, 2017. The lecture is part of the Howard H. Steel Conference on Pediatric Spinal Cord Injury/Dysfunction, a full day pre-course of the 2017 American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) Scientific Meeting.
Bethlyn Houlihan, MSW, MPH, co-director of Dissemination and Knowledge Translation, will present, "Improved Health Self-Management through a Peer-Led Telephone-Based Empowerment Intervention for Persons with Chronic SCI." She will also present the poster, "Development of a SCI Virtual Coach to Prevent Pressure Ulcers."
Sarah Everhart Skeels, MPH, will present the poster, "How an SCI Peer Health Coach Influences Empowerment and Health Self-Management with Peers."

Tessa Hart, PhD, project director at Moss Traumatic Brain Injury Model System, organized and spoke at a symposium, “Adapting behavioral health interventions for cognitively impaired populations.” She also spoke at a symposium organized by Co-Director John Whyte, MD, PhD, “You can only treat what you can define: Specifying rehabilitation treatment targets;” co-authored 3 posters; and assumed her role as newly elected Secretary of the Brain Injury Interdisciplinary Special Interest Group.

John Whyte, MD, MPH presented in a symposium, "Individualized Quantitative Behavioral Assessment in Patients with Disorders of Consciousness."

Amanda Rabinowitz, PhD presented a poster as a first-time ACRM attendee.

National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center

Yuying Chen, MD, director of the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center presented the poster, "Analysis of Racial Differences in Weight Change of Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury over 5 years. In addition, she presented, "Demographic and Injury Trends of Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury in the United States, 1972-2014." Dr. Chen presented a four-hour instructional course, "Understanding Obesity and Pain after Spinal Cord Injury Through Preclinical, Qualitative and Epidemiologic Research." She also presented a symposium, "Advancing Knowledge on Spinal Cord Injury research through the use of comparable databases."

Denise Tate, PhD, the project’s principal investigator at the University of Michigan Spinal Cord Injury Model System, presented the poster, “Complications to Neurogenic Bowel and Bladder after Spinal Cord Injury: The Military Veteran’s Perspective.” She and other grant investigators from the University of Michigan were also co-authors on two other poster presentations, “Utilizing a Response Shift Model to Explain Quality of Life Following Spinal Cord Injury” and “The Impact of a Wellness Program on Persons with a Spinal Cord Injury.”
