Bro Mat & Sis Chik's Move & Farewell

As all might have known, Sis Chik will be finishing her studies here at Bangor University by the end of this month (April 2011). She and her family have planned to bring all of their stuffs onto a container a week before they are going home.

MSS Bangor would like to invite all members to come to the 'Gotong Royong' helping Sis Chik on the following dates:

22 April 2011 (19:30 onwards) - Moving belongings from inside the house onto the garden in front of the house.
23 April 2011 (07:30 onwards) - Moving all the belongings from the garden on to the container.

There will be some refreshments and food served during the move. On behalf of Bro Mat and Sis Chik's family, thank you very much.

MSS Bangor would like to express our heartiest congratulations to Ms. Tun Nurul Aimi for being selected as the best poster presenter in the recent College of Natural Sciences Bangor internal conference.

By winning the best poster, she has been awarded with a winning certificate and £50 cheque from the College of Natural Science Bangor University.

We are so proud of Ms. Aimi achievement and hope that this can spark up herself and other fellow Malaysians to excel in their studies furthermore. Keep up the good work.

Prayers Timetable for the Bangor Islamic Centre 2011CE / 1432-1433AH

Dear All,

Assalamu Alaikom wa Rahmatulah wa Barakatoh

With the assistance of Allah (swt) and many of those who put time and effort, we have come to an agreement over the prayers timetable for the Bangor Islamic Centre. The following points have been considered when preparing this time table.

The focal centre of calculation is the Bangor Islamic Centre with the following coordinates - Latitude 53°13'25" North - Longitude 04°07'51" West
The altitude was 100 meters above sea level to take into account high areas.
The radius of the calculation extends to 10 miles (16km) – which is shown in the map below
Summer Time starts at the Last Sunday of March and ends at the Last Sunday of October
Asr (mid-afternoon) prayers is calculated based on the Shafi’i, method for early Asr Prayers
Imsak angle = -15° 15', Fajr angle = -15° 00', Isha angle = -15° 00
There are NO added time to any prayer including Maghrib (0)
The angles for calculating Fajr and Isha are -15° 00' from the Horizon
Angle for Imsak is -15° 15' from the Horizon
Rule at high latitudes and Mid Summer is 90 minutes for Fajr and Isha prayers

Bro Hisham & Sis Shikin Container

Last Saturday Bro Hisham & Sis Shikin had organised a gotong royong to help them sending almost all their belongings back to Malaysia using a container.

Apart from MSS Society members, several Bruneians and Arab came to help them. The men helped the couple to move their things from Friday night and Saturday morning. The women helped Sis Shikin in cooking and serving food for all those who helped.

The gotong-royong ended at around noon. Here are some pictures taken during the gotong royong.

Eidul Adha Celebration Party

Last Sunday (21st November 2010), Malaysian Student Society Bangor University had arranged an Eidul Adha Celebration Party. The party was held in University's John Phillips Hall.

We are lucky because almost all of Malaysian studies in Bangor came to the party. Several Malaysian from Caernarfon, British friends and supervisor and their family too came to the party. Not to forget the attendance of all Bruneian Students in Bangor University.

Participants come as early as 11:00 AM in the morning. Early birds set up the whole place and wait for the others to come with their foods. We started to eat after a speech and a prayer recital by the committee advisor, Dr. Abdul Aziz Jaafar.

The food was pot luck from all of the participants. The vast variety of Eid celebrations foods had certainly makes attendees forgot for a while of being home sick during this festive season.

The game started after lunch. The kids started first with 'Colouring Contest'. Followed by 'Win-Lose-Or-Draw' game, and 'Musical Chair' game; which was divided into three categories: Children, Male & Female. The party ended with the giving of presents to all of the winners.

MSS Bangor would like to thank you for all contribution and attendance to the party.

Eve of Eid & Eid Celebrations

A gathering will be held on the eve of Eid (either Wednesday or Thursday night). As usual, the gathering will be held at Bro Sufian & Sis Betty's house. Society members are invited to their house after breaking their fast & solat in their own houses (around 9:00pm). Light foods will be brought in for the gathering in potluck system.

Please wear Malaysian traditional clothes (a.k.a. Baju Raya), because we are planning to make a Salam Perantau video this year. The video are planned to be aired / wired by the mid of Syawal this year. Hope everybody could join and support for the success of this video.

The following day, we will celebrate the Eid around 10:30am - 3:00pm. It will be held in Bangor University, J.P. Hall. If the Eid falls on Friday, women can stay in the hall while men will go to the mosque for Friday Prayers.

Iftar Ramadhan & Bro Husni's Farewell

Iftar Ramadhan that has been planned earlier has been held on the date and time announced earlier. Almost all MSS Bangor society had participated in the event.

The event also been held in conjunction with Bro Husni's farewell. He is scheduled to fly home to Malaysia on the 4th September (Saturday). He will be departing from Bangor train station for London on the same day at 3:00 pm.

Let us pray for his safe journey back home and a successful job hunting. All the best for Bro Husni. For those who are interested in sending Bro Husni back home, you can do so by coming to the train station on the above stated date.

Farewell Party & Family Day at Llanberis

On the 5th of June, MSS Bangor has held a BBQ picnic party in Llanberis, Gwynedd. The picnic party was held to say farewell to several members of the society.

They are, Bro Hazamie & Sis Puteri, Sis Aini & Sis Hidayah, Sis Farhana, Sis Syazwani & Sis Ili. (Sis Syazwani & Sis Ili however couldn't make it to the party because they have prior commitments).

The party started as early as 10:00 am. Early comers booked the place half an hour earlier, lit up the barbecue, and start barbecuing. 20 chickens were served. (Note for future committee: 10 would be suffice)

The weather was cold at the beginning, and as the sun gradually showing it's face, the party gets a little bit more merrier. Several games were held by members from "Psychology" for the kids such as, "Cari Gula-Gula dalam Tepung" and "Paper Dance".

The party ended with several speeches from the ones who are going back to Malaysia, and prize giving ceremony to the kids!

An Evening with Ustaz Erfino Johari

Followings are translation from Mr President's email.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Please be informed the dinner evening with Ustaz Erfino Johari yesterday ran smoothly, and the attendance is satisfactory.

I would like to share some of the discussion with him, hope that there is benefit for us all, but fellow MSS members are encouraged to email him for more information if necessary.

There is a possibility that even less intake to UK in the future due to the UK Border Agency's implementation of the points based system.

Lampeter University will be merged with Trinity College, it will lose the identity of the University of Lampeter on certain reasons.

Regarding the 'majlis ilmu' (fiqh) that is very relevant to our daily 'ibadah':

Solat Jama' (gather prayers) can be done while before starting the journey, on the journey, or upon arriving at the destination. This means that we can do it at home (before departure), elsewhere (in transit) and at home (after returning from a journey).

Solat Qasar (shortening prayers) can only be done while in travel (when we hit the road only).

It rukhsah (concession) for Jama' Zuhr and 'Asr in winter (for those who need), and for Jama' Maghrib and Isya' in summer (for those who need).

Isya' time in summer is very difficult for estimation, because each institute observing prayer times issues different time, if necessary, any concession jama' (Isya' into Maghrib) in the summer.

A week after Bro Azamie & Sis Puteri's move (link), it is time for Bro Hisham, Bro Azhar (Mr President) and their families to move in to their new house.

Several helpers starts the move by helping Mr President loading his stuff onto two minivans, and unload all of it at his new house near the town center. The move was swift, because Mr President and wife do not have a lot of things to move from their fully furnished house.

Bro Hisham's family on the other hand has a lot of stuff collected and bought during their nearly 3 years stay in Bangor. They have been wrapping up their belongings as early as 1st May with some help from several of the MSS Bangor members.

The family started the move by themselves right after the Friday prayers. The other MSS Bangor members come to help them from 8:00 pm. All medium sized furnitures were moved that night to make way for bigger and bulkier furnitures tomorrow. The move ended at 12:15 mid night.

The second session of the move starts at 10:00 am the following morning. Members brought in their foods and beverages. This time, all the cars and minivans were loaded with bigger furnitures. The move finished in the evening.

On behalf of both families and MSS Bangor Committee, I would like to say thank you for all that has helped in the whole moving process.

Bro Azamie & Sis Puteri's Move

Yesterday, MSS Bangor community has been busy helping Bro Azamie and Sis Puteri's move. The couple was sending all their belongings from their house in Bangor to their permanent house in Malaysia using a container service.

The couple has been wrapping up their belongings for months before the move. Thus making it easier for the community to just pick and stack up their stuffs.

The moving work started on Friday night, with several Bangor strong men helped lifting most of their heavy appliances outside their house.

The following morning's work starts as early as 4:30am (by the couple), and MSS Bangor community starts pouring in their strength and cooking skills 2 hours after that.

The loading of the container starts at 8:20am and finishes 11:20am. Thank you for all participation. The move was swift and the foods were great!

If more people are moving in Bangor, the members do not need to spend their money on gymnasiums membership fee anymore to stay fit.

Annual General Meeting 2010 & BBQ

On the 4th of April 2010, an annual general meeting & barbecue party has been handled at the house of Mr. Suffian. The party was held to honour the stepping down of 2009/10 committee members and the appointment of the new 2010/11 committee members.

The main course of the day (barbecue chicken) were sponsored by the society. While other foods and drinks were brought in by members of the society (potluck).

The meeting started at 2:30pm with attendance of almost all society members. Society advisor, Dr. Aziz bin Jaafar commenced the ceremony with a welcoming speech and a prayer recital. Attendees then were invited to have buffet style lunch.

After lunch, society president of 2009/10, Mr. Husni addressed the party with the stepping down of previous committee members. They are as follows:

President: Mr. Husni
Vice President: Mr. Ponnusaamy
Secretary: Ms. Aimi
Treasurer: Ms. Nadiah

He then announced the newly elected committee members. They are as follows:

President: Mr. Azhar bin Mohamad
Vice President: Mr. Azrul Amri bin Jamal
Secretary: Mrs. Tengku Fara Kamilia
Treasurer: Ms. Siti Wan Aminah

The general meeting continued with a speech from the newly elected president. He expressed his hopes and call the whole society to be together in order to make Bangor a suitable and happy place to live and study.

The official meeting ended and continued with unofficial society members chit chat.... (until midnight?)
