Tips for "Unplugging" during the Holiday Season

Hello December!

This is my favorite time of year! Christmas is my favorite holiday and my birthday is on New Year's Eve! :) So during December I try to unplug and really focus on reconnecting with friends and family. Technology can have a way of taking over your life and becoming a major distraction. Some of us can get so caught up in the "online" world that we aren't present and fully enjoying the REAL life we are in.

The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to spend some time away from the constant barrage of email notifications and text messages and enjoy the joy, peace and magical moments that December brings! Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you are traveling during this holiday season:

Catch up some reading - Grab your favorite magazines and the latest bestseller (like my #ExtraordinaryPurpose) book to make the best use of your free time.

Set your tweets and posts to autopilot - Try to step away from social media and be present in the moment. Use tools like Hootsuite and Facebook Scheduler to plan ahead and schedule posts for your business pages.

Enjoy the moment - As you are sharing special moments with friends and family this season, be present and don't focus on the need to instantly share every move on social media. Snap a few photos and share updates on social media at the end of the day.

Technology - My #1 favorite feature I loved about the Kia Soul was how simple and sleek the interior technology was. I was seriously so caught up in playing with all the features that it took me a minute to pull out the lot and start driving:) Having rented dozens of cars before when I was in corporate sales, it usually takes me forever to figure out how to work stuff in cars, however the Kia Soul technology was very simple to use. I plugged my phone in the USB port, synced my phone with the Bluetooth, programmed my satellite radio stations and plugged my destination into navigation in less than 3 minutes. So quick and easy!

Comfort - Riding in the Kia Soul felt so good! The seats were comfy and cozy. I was originally concerned driving around on leather seats in the triple digit heat of a Texas summer but I quickly discovered the Kia Soul had a fix for that..ventilated seats circulating cool or warm air..HALLELUJAH.

Style - The "Alien" green exterior, bright Xenon headlights, and sleek panoramic sunroof were stylish features that made feel like one of the "cool kids" rolling in the Kia Soul.

Space - As a crossover and multi purpose vehicle the Soul was very spacious. I had a chance to catch up with my bestie, her hubby and my 5 year old goddaughter for breakfast while in Dallas. My goddaughter immediately jumped in the large truck space and made herself comfy. The seats let down so it would be perfect for a road trip, camping trip or drive in movie! There was plenty of leg room to make for a comfortable ride for my besties 6 foot husband and to fit their entire family and some extra luggage.

What I'm Loving This Summer

It’s official..SUMMER is here! I never really appreciated this season while living in Texas (triple digits anyone?) until I moved to Chicago. When you are buried under snow with a polar vortex hovering over you for 6 months of the year, you savor every day of those three short but sweet summer months. So as you prepare for vacation, warmer weather and longer days check out what I’m loving this summer plus some great travel, style and entertainment tips.

Travel Issues

The June issue of some of your favorite magazines are PACKED with great travel deals, tips and features to get your geared up for summer getaways. Conde Nast Traveler “The Hot List”, Unite4Good “Travel4Good” and Essence “Vacation Issue” with the Lyon Brothers (#Empire) shining on the front cover are a few of my favorites.

Summer Festivals

Attending festivals is officially one of my favorite hobbies! With Chicago being famous for hosting more summer festivals than any other city in the world, it’s hard not to get addicted to them. For every type of food, culture, belief, music or sports there is out there, Chicago has a festival for it!

I celebrated the first day of summer yesterday at the Taste of Randolph in the Chicago neighborhood I once called home, the West Loop. I enjoyed Sauvignon Seafood Tacos from City Winery, Cheeseburgers from Grange Burger Hall, Guacamole from DeCero and some amazing Cookie Monster Ice Cream from Cone Gourmet Ice Cream while listening to some great bands and shopping the vendors.

Travel Smart: Solo Travel Tips for Women

Travel is ingrained in my DNA. My mother was a woman who traveled across the world with ease. Whether she was exploring France on a European vacation, hanging with the locals in Guadalajara, Mexico, cruising through the Caribbean or sneaking off to Vegas. I still have the postcard she sent me from her Hawaiian vacation when I was a kid. Even as a divorced, single mother she still set aside time and money to prioritize travel. Sometimes she had kids in tow or her girlfriends, but she was also not afraid to travel alone. My mothers ability to globetrott with confidence is one of the many reasons she was and will always be my shero.

I believe every woman should experience taking a solo trip. You don’t necessarily need to embark upon an “Eat, Pray, Love” adventure or go “Wild” like Cheryl Strayed but taking the opportunity to explore and discover on your own is a brave and bold move that could lead to an empowering experience of a lifetime.

Traveling alone can be a scary thought for many, here are four travel tips that will ease any fears and help make your solo travel experience safe, enjoyable and fulfilling.

1. Identify Your Ideal Destination

Decide if you want to lay around a beach, relax at a spa, shop all day, or tap into some history and culture. If you’ve been stressed lately a relaxing beach vacation may be what you need to unwind. Foreign destinations are always ideal if you are looking to explore history and discover a new culture. Don’t mull over the destination too long, just choose!

2. Do Your Research

Pre plan an itinerary. There are plenty of online resources available to help you figure out where to dine, shop, entertain and sight-see. You can even walk into a nearby travel agency to chat with the experts about your upcoming plans. Professional travel agents will not make you feel obligated to book your trip with them but if you do decide to book with them they can help to customize a trip specific to your travel goals.

3. Be Friendly

Even though you are on the trip to enjoy being with yourself, making connections while there can make the trip more interesting. Don’t be afraid to casually chat with the hotel bartender or smile at other tourists you see while out and about. Maybe you can link up with another group of people to go to dinner or a local tour so you don’t feel so alone, if that is an issue for you. I find that when people are on vacation they are much more open to meeting new people and making fast friends.

4. Be Safe

Always be aware of your surroundings. Make sure you pick a travel destination that is known to be safe and recommended for tourist travel. Even when you are at a safe resort, precautions should still be taken:

When you check in at the hotel, ask for two keys and let them know someone else will be joining you later.
Avoid venturing outside of your hotel late at night, if you do, have a cab called ahead of time so you aren’t spotted walking down the streets alone.
Don’t leave the hotel with your passport, keep it locked in the hotel room safe.

Happy March!

We are having a tough winter here in Chicago with blizzards and sub zero temps just about every week so I am officially on a countdown to Spring (17 days!). Even though I’m not hopeful we will see warm temps and sunshine here in Chicago by next month, I have made sure that I will be having a few days in the sun elsewhere. I’m headed back to my favorite vacation spot, Cabo San Lucas in April for a well deserved vacation and getaway with a few of my girlfriends from Texas. I’ve blogged about Cabo here before and my decision to purchase a timeshare, so I’m excited to go back “home” for a few days.

If you are planning to head to the beach this year, here are some #travelsmart tips to make sure it’s your next beach trip is the best ever:

Beachside Chilling

Relaxing on the beach should be your #1 priority. Many people spend time poolside and maybe get near the beach but fail to actually spend time on the sand. Rent a chair (or even better a cabana) and plan to spend at least a few solid hours along the shore. There is something about the sound of waves crashing, sun beaming down and feet in the sand that can instantly lift your mood. If your resort has spa services on site, carve out time in your trip for a beachside spa day. It’s always good to get in some “me time” in the midst of all the fun and adventure of your vacation.

Unplug and Catch Up

Technology can have a way of taking over your life. Some of us can get so caught up in the “online” world that we aren’t present and fully enjoying the REAL life we are in. Beach trips are the perfect opportunity to catch up some reading NOT check email and social media the whole time. Bring along your favorite magazines and newest book to make the best use of your free time. Try to step away from social media and be present in the moment. Nightlife

Vacationing at a destination with a hip and urban nightlife is a bonus! It’s always good to step away from the resort and hang with the local scene and culture. Before heading to your destination check out Groupon for discounted deals on local events and restaurants. Dine at a nice restaurant, dance like nobody is watching when the DJ plays your song or gather the girls for an “I’m Every Woman” karaoke sing along. Conversation and laughs over a great meal and a bumping bassline beat always makes for a good time.

Go on an excursion

There are so many wonderful water sport activities to take advantage of when you are located at a beach resort. From parasailing to snorkeling to sunset cruises, making sure to have some fun and adventure in the midst of relaxing makes for priceless memories. When I vacationed with girlfriends in the Bahamas we went horseback riding along the beach and watched as one of the girls went parasailing. In Jamaica I climbed the Dunn Rivers Falls and hiked the El Yuenque rainforest in Puerto Rico. Whatever you do make it fun and adventurous.

Last week I attended the 11th Annual Chicago and Travel Adventure Show, the largest travel show in the Midwest. When I attended the event for the first time in 2014 with friends, I had such a wonderful time that I knew I would make this a “go to” event every year! Know Before You Go: Travel Tips for Exploring a New City

Happy New Year! Hope everyone is off to a fantastic and powerful 2015!

This time of year is always special for me! I celebrated my 34th birthday on New Years Eve (yes I am a #NYE Baby) at home with friends, food and lots of fun. 2014 was a phenomenal year for me: I lost 60 lbs, quit my corporate job to freelance, consult and coach full time , moved to a new apartment and of course traveled:)

On New Years Day I also celebrate my “Chicago-versary”. Seven years ago on January 1st I took a one way flight from Dallas/Ft Worth to Chicago to begin a new chapter in my life. I left behind friends, family, a beautiful home and opened myself to new opportunities the "big city" had to offer. For all the ups and downs it's still one of the best decisions I've made in my life thus far.

As I settled into Chicago back in 2008 I had to quickly learn how to adapt, navigate and explore my new city. Luckily I had a coworker and friend to help me but I still had to take it upon myself to explore Chicago on my own.

So if you have a relocation in your near future or just making plans to visit a new city for a weekend getaway, here are a few of my #travelsmart tips for exploring a new city:

Google Before You Go

Trip Advisor, Yelp! and TimeOut are my favorite go to websites for all the goods on where to dine, shop, entertain and sightsee. They provide rankings, traveler photos and user reviews that give you an idea of what to REALLY expect.

Official city websites also provide event calendars, maps and comprehensive information on local tours.

Getting Around Town

Before you hurry to book a rental car for your trip take time to discover your other transportation options. If you are in a large metropolitan city like Chicago, NYC or D.C. public transportation are sometimes your best bet! Check out fares beforehand and use Google Maps to determine the closest stops to your hotel and planned destinations. If public transportation isnt an option, you still need to understand cab fares and distances between locations so you can estimate your transportation budget. In a spread out city like Houston or Orlando? Hop on Hotwire.com for the best rental car rates and don’t forget the GPS!

Grab a Deal

Groupons, Living Social Deals and other city vouchers are a must! Before heading to your destination check out these sites for discounted deals at local restaurants. Most deals are between 30%-50% off for popular and newly opened establishments. Pre purchasing vouchers and planning out your meals will also make it easier to stay within your travel budget and plan out a more detailed itinerary. If you are relocating, this is a great way to jump right in and explore restaurants and activities in your new town!

Get Friendly

Making connections while on your trip always makes the trip more interesting! Don’t be afraid to casually chat with the hotel bartender or smile at other tourists you see while out and about. Maybe you can link up with another group of people to go to dinner or a local tour and you may end up with a new friend!

Holiday Movie Time with #AMCCocaColaFreestyle

We are officially in the holiday season, my FAVORITE time of the year! I had a very low key and relaxing Thanksgiving, avoided the Black Friday madness and spent the rest of the weekend putting up my Christmas Tree!

Between Christmas and my birthday, New Year’s Eve (yep I am a NYE baby) I simply love the holiday season! One of my favorite traditions is going to the movies! I can remember when I was a teenager every Christmas, after all the presents were open and we were done “throwing down” on comfort food we would all head to the theater to check out the latest movie as a family. Even as an adult and after my mom passed we still try to keep the tradition going.

So before I travel to Texas for my Christmas vacation I got together with a few of my Chicago girls for a movie night at AMC Theatres on the Magnificent Mile.

Having access to a “Gold Ticket” made us feel like V.I.P.’s as we heading into check out the latest Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. One upgrade at the recently renovated AMC 600 N. Michigan is reserved seating! No more fighting to try and find sets all together or walking in late and ending up on the front row. Woo Hoo!

There can be no movie without popcorn and a Coca-Cola so our next step was to the concession stand with our AMC Gift Card. I couldn't wait to try out the new Coca-Cola Freestyle Machine and get a sip of a fun combination of flavor and refreshment.

The #AMCCocaColaFreestyle partnership is awesome! There are over 100 flavor combinations and the sleek retro fountain stand has a fun touch screen.

We spent way too long at the machine sampling and playing around with all the different flavors, we almost missed the beginning of our movie :-)

Select your beverage choice. I went went Coca-Cola Classic. It was cool to see they had Powerade and Dasani options as well.

Select your flavors. This is where the fun began! I went with a mixture of Coca-Cola Raspberry, Coca-Cola Vanilla and Coca-Cola Cherry. I got so excited when I saw the Coca-Cola Vanilla that I totally missed that they already have a “Cherry Vanilla” choice! Which is the best combination ever!

My Disney Experience: #NicheParent14 Recap

Last week I returned from “the most magical place on earth” Disneyworld! It was five days of fun, adventure, inspiration, networking and professional development in sunny South Florida all thanks to the Niche Parent Network. As I mentioned in my last blog I was a speaker for the 3rd Annual Niche Parent 2014 conference, an opportunity for digital influencers and brands to come together to learn, network and grow while experiencing some family fun!

Just last year I was attending my first blogging & social media conference and now to have the opportunity to speak plus take another trip to Disney World was truly a blessing and made the trip all the more meaningful!

Nadia Jones and her team had a fun filled weekend planned for us in the midst of power packed sessions and keynotes. Safari ride and dinner at Animal Kingdom was perfect thanks to a visit and photo op from Mickey and Minnie!

Reuniting with Shamu at SeaWorld Orlando for an evening show was a blast!

My #Disneyside Experience

My first time to Disney was my freshmen year in high school, then as an adult for a global conference in 2007 with my former corporate gig. Most recently I was at Disney World in 2011, when I invited my oldest sister to tag along for a business conference in Kissimmee and treated her to her first ever visit to the beloved theme park for her 50th birthday! We had a blast and she felt like a kid again..seriously she was taking pictures with Mickey and smiling the entire day! So much has changed in three years!

From the moment I booked the hotel, to riding in style to Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort on the Disney Magical Express and in the end having the convenience of luggage pickup from the hotel, the new Disney Experience was FLAWLESS!

It all started with the arrival of the Magic Band! An all in one wearable device that served as a room key, theme park admission and Fast Pass+ was the perfect solution for traveling light and simplifying navigation through the Walt Disney World multiple theme parks, attractions and restaurants.

The Disney Coronado Springs Resort, one of the more moderately priced Walt Disney World Resorts (Avg $159/night) was beautifully manicured, CLEAN and welcoming. Ameneties included a 24hr fitness center, pool + waterslide, conference center, late night lounge and like all WDW resorts FREE shuttles to all the WDW theme and water parks.

Work Hard. Play Hard. I enjoyed a fun day at Disney Hollywood Studios taking in all the new rides and attractions, my favorite the Aerosmith “Rock and Roll” Rollercoaster! I loved that WDW now offers Complementary WiFi through all their resorts and theme parks too!

Complimentary transportation and luggage delivery to/from Orlando Airport was a travelers dream! The morning of my departure, bag tags, a boarding pass and airport shuttle instructions were already handled for me by Disney!

Hope you had an amazing summer! I’m excited because my favorite season, FALL IS HERE!

October is a busy month for me! I just returned from Atlanta for Bishop T.D. Jakes Woman Thou Art Loosed Conference #WTAL where my spirit was revived and I was encouraged to dream bigger than I have ever have before. Next week I am looking forward to traveling to Walt Disney World for the #NicheParent14 conference Oct. 16 - 18. There will be empowering keynote sessions and hands-on workshops on entrepreneurship, social media, branding, blogging and more. I will be speaking at the #NicheParent14 conference on the topic of : “Collaborating within your network to create a signature brand” on a panel with my Boardroom Beauties co founder Renee B and Sonia Kang of Mixed Up Clothing.

In this post I will be putting a twist on my "What's in my Bag?" series and sharing the MUST HAVE travel essentials you need when attending conferences, whether for business or personal.

Portable Chargers

There is nothing worse than running out of juice on your cell phone while you are busy tweeting and instagramming moments from the conference. Since most conferences have limited breaks throughout the day you need to have a charger with you. Wall outlets aren't always plentiful and you don’t want to be that person sitting against the wall waiting on her phone to charge, so portable is the way to go. For my iPhone I have a Mophie Juice Pack, an extended battery and case all in one! LOVE IT!

You charge the Mophie Juice Pack and slide it on your phone as a case. When your battery starts running low, you just flip a switch on the Mophie case and the charge kicks in. It is a very bulky case but it beats having to tote your charger around searching for plug outlets! If you have an android device there are other portable chargers that work on the go,

I have a tablet that runs on the Android system, so when I know I will be using my iPhone and tablet I bring my other portable charger that has USB hookups for over 5 different devices, including my bluetooth!

Comfy Shoes

When you are at a conference you still want to look your best and be fashion forward but running around between sessions and back and forth to your hotel can put some miles on your shoes! Comfort is a must! When I was in Atlanta last week it was tempting to wear my heels but we walked 0.5 miles from our hotel to the event twice a day, so that was not an option! Always bring a pair of comfy shoes that offer you support and can get you through hours of walking around on your feet. If you still want to wear your cutesy heels and switch into some comfy shoes later, find your favorite pair of ballet flats or sandals to throw in your tote. I keep my Tory Burch Sandals with me at all times..and now that it’s getting cold my next purchase will be a pair of rollable flats from Flat Out Heels to carry with me!

Business Cards and Holder

Conferences are all about networking and making new friends! When you only have a chance to make a quick introduction before heading to the next workshop you need to make sure you have business cards on hand and ready! If you are attending a conference at an arena or hotel I guarantee you it will be cold! It may be 80 degrees outside but they always put the thermostat on FREEZING while you are in the room so you must be prepared. Keep a light jacket or oversized shawl in your bag to adjust to the changing temperatures. Make sure it easily fits in your purse or tote, so it doesn’t feel like one more thing you have to carry around. You want to make sure are comfortable while attending a conference, it’s hard to focus..and try not to fall asleep when you are cold.

Hope you all have been enjoying your summer!! I have had a blast thus far. From concerts, festivals, making new friends, walks on the lake and exciting stuff on the professional front I've had a fun and busy summer.

This week I am headed to Miami for an exciting conference , C2: ColorComm Conference and a few days of people watching and poolside relaxation! I have a few travel essentials that I've been loving this summer so I'm bringing back my "What's in my Bag?" series to let you all in on all the goodies I've found!

2) FitBit

A few months ago I gifted myself with a new pedometer and activity tracker. Wearable technology is so popular now and a few co workers were telling me about the FitBit products. Since November I've lost 40 lbs but wanted to keep a better track on my activity level and just exactly how many calories I burned in spin class! Fitbit has a nice line of products available but I am the proud owner of a FitBit Zip, one of the more affordable at only $47.99 in most retail stores.

It's perfect for summer because I do a ton of walking through the neighborhood and around at Chicago festivals! On those days that I didn't hit the gym it's good to see just how many steps I took and calories burned. You can set activity, food and weight loss goals and track your progress as well as map out and track your daily run or walk. It automaticlly syncs with the app you download on your phone so unlike other fitness apps there is no manual labor involved. Perfect:) If you are looking to stay active this summer or see just how many steps you take running in and out of airport you definitely need to invest in a FitBit.

3) Tory Burch Sandals

I am all about comfort and style when it comes to my footwear! In the fall I purchased my first pair of Tory Burch shoes at the Fashion Outlets of Chicago. Because it was the "off season" I got a bargain deal on everything I purchased that day! These Ali Thong sandals are discontinued and can only be found at outlets or online retailers and I LOVE THEM! I have a black and sand pair and I have literally worn them everywhere this summer plus they easily fit in my catch all Coach tote I've been rocking.

I have to agree! The shoes are stylish yet have a soft and comfortable cushion. While I have wore them out, they have NOT worn out by any means! This is definitely a shoe I see surviving another summer and I'm already searching online for more colors!

4) Uber App

I'm late to the "Uber is the best" party but now that I finally tried it, I am a fan!!! For so long I've seen the chatter about Uber on my social media newsfeeds and heard a few friends mention it but I really didn't know how it worked. Then I found myself in need of a ride in a location where taxis weren't plentiful so I decided to go to their site from my mobile phone. In a matter of minutes I downloaded the app, found a referral coupon code for a FREE Uber ride , set my pick up location and my driver Cheryl arrived in less than 3 minutes! I could actually track how close she was through the app. WOW!

I am not a fan of cabbies so this was perfect. The driver had a clean car, was personable and the best part was there no drama over the fare and tips. When you sign up for Uber you upload your credit card info, set your tip amount and when your ride is complete they charge your card. No cash on hand needed!

Curvy Chicks! Summer is here and that means it’s time for vacations, concerts, retreats and beautiful summer nights that call for a new wardrobe! This summer I have a wedding in Texas, vacation to Cabo and a business conference in Miami on my agenda. As a “curvy chick” I take closer notice to how well my clothes fit, flow and flatter my body, while I keep up with the latest fashion trends.

Here are some tips to help you stay chic, trendy and fabulous from the beach to the boardroom:

Beach Styling

Maxi dresses are comfortable and flatters every body type! If you are uncomfortable showing your shoulders and arms, pair your dress with a colorful cardigan or denim jacket.
Whether you choose to rock a bikini or a one piece swimsuit, a loose fitting sundress or sarong makes for the perfect cover-up.
Not into the “short shorts”? Bermuda shorts are a great alternative if you don’t want your thighs exposed but still want to give your legs room to breathe and get some sun!
Summer Nights

The perfect pair of jeans paired with a cropped blazer is my favorite go to outfit for a date or night on the town with the girls. Every girl should have a black blazer and dark colored jeans in her closet.

Top 3 Perks of Business Travel

In my career as a Midwest territory sales manager, I spent 70% of my time traveling for conferences and client meetings. Business travel can be exciting, when you have a four day conference in Vegas but can be exhausting when you end up on a plant tour in the “middle of nowhere” South Dakota. After six years in the sales world along the way I discovered there are personal perks to be gained that can work to your advantage.

Here are three tips to help you turn business travel into a “company paid” getaway:

1. Loyalty Points

Make sure you are signed up for every loyalty program available via airlines, hotels and rental cars.

The best way to make this work for you is to consistently book with a preferred partner. When I travel for work 90% of the time I fly American, rent from National Rental Car and stay at Hilton branded hotels. This is to ensure I maximize my earning potential on points, credits and miles. While these expenses are charged to your corporate account your loyalty points belong to YOU! Unless stipulated in your company travel policy they do NOT have to be used for business travel.

If you use your own personal card for expenses reimbursed at a later date, make sure that card is earning you some points too! Switch to a credit card associated with your preferred airline or hotel partner so all charges will be converted to points/miles!

My current loyalty perks annually earn me: 2 FREE checked bags, priority boarding, automatic first class upgrades, average of 3 free rental car days, two free hotel stays and enough miles for at least 1 roundtrip ticket.

2. Weekend Stays

Traveling over a weekend can often times produce significant cost savings. Flights are usually lower and most hotels offer discounts on extended stays. This can all add up to a free weekend trip for you! Instead of just flying into Miami for Thursday’s conference and then heading home, stay over and head to the beach! While your meals are considered a personal expense, the flight, rental car and in some cases the hotel are covered for you. Search for the best flight and hotel deal so that you can show your company that you actually SAVED them some money on this one!

3. Schedule

Start planning your personal trips around your work travel schedule

Most travel policies don’t have a stipulation on where your business travel originates as long as your final destination is your “home location”. Here’s how to make this work:

Let’s say you need to be in Charlotte for a conference in June. You and your honey have also been talking about going to Scottsdale sometime that month. Book Scottsdale trip a few days prior to Charlotte. Instead of flying home, fly Scottsdale to Charlotte then “home” after the meeting. This leaves you only covering your one way flight “home” to Scottsdale.

Yes that may make for a long week and a large suitcase to pack but you save anywhere from $100-$300 in airfare.

Always be sure to travel smart!

Back Down Memory Lane : Throwback #Travel Photos and Memories

Last week I started to feel a bit nostalgic flipping through an old photo album, and by" flipping" I mean scrolling through my Facebook photos..oh technology! :) While reminiscing and thinking about how my travel journey started and all the amazing experiences and memories I've made over the years I became grateful for having the courage, adventurous spirit and resources to have explored so many great villages, towns and countries over the last 20+ years.

My journey began as little girl. My mother, who passed away 12 years ago was a woman who traveled across the world with ease! Whether she was exploring France on a European vacation, hanging with the locals in Guadalajara Mexico, cruising through the Caribbean or sneaking off to Vegas, she lived it up! (I still have the postcard she sent me from her Hawaiian vacation when I was a kid)

She also made sure at an early age I embraced different cultures and experiences when at the young age of 12 she signed me up for a 8 day educational trip that took us all through Mexico, while she stayed back home in Texas. Before I was 18 I had already gone to Vegas 3 times with her and family friends, no slot machines for me of course! I'm blessed to have had a mother who was such an inspiration and I can't wait to share some of the same travel memories with my own children one day soon:)

Packing - Always be strategic. Keep it Light! Unless you want to drag around an overweight 55 lb bag (and pay the $100 fee!) you will need to have a plan for your packing. When I travel I always stay within 2-3 color themes so I reduce the number of shoes and accessories packed. Ladies, when it comes to handbags keep it simple: One large tote and a small clutch will do just fine! My number one rule on long trips: Don’t be afraid to REPEAT! Jeans and slacks can be worn at least twice during a trip.

Pre trip – Groupons, Living Social Deals and other city vouchers are a must! Before heading to your destination check out these sites for discounted deals at local restaurants. Most deals are between 30%-50% off for popular and newly opened establishments. Pre purchasing vouchers and planning out your meals will make it easier to stay within your travel budget.

Research - Know what you are looking for in a hotel or resort. Close to the city center? Fitness Center? On site massage services? What are your dealbreakers? When I travel complimentary wi –fi, onsite restaurant and fitness center are must have amenities for me. Depending on the nature of your trip (sightseeing, family or leisure) narrow down your “must haves” and compare at least 3-4 hotels before booking. You may be willing to sacrifice on site restaurant option if you know the hotel is close distance to several restaurant options. Know before you go!

Safety First – This is very important when flying solo. While you are traveling you should always be aware of your surroundings. Make sure you pick a travel destination that is known to be safe and recommended for tourist travel. The U.S. Dept of State updates daily their international travel warnings and details on locations to avoid.

A few precautions I always take:

a) Ask for 2 keys when you check in and let them know someone else will be joining you later.

b) Try not to be outside of your hotel late at night, if you do have a cab called ahead of time so you aren’t spotted walking down the streets alone.

c) When traveling overseas. Don’t leave the hotel with your passport, keep it locked in the hotel room safe. You don’t want to risk it being stolen or lost while you are out and about

Explore - Please don't go to Rome and eat cheeseburgers everyday or get upset when you can’t find a Coca Cola! This is a major travel pet peeve I have! You should immerse yourself in the local culture and embrace new experiences. I love checking out "Hole in the wall" restaurants! They usually have the best food at a more affordable price point. Ask the concierge or "locals" you interact with for their dining recommendations.

Be Friendly - Making connections while traveling can make the trip more interesting, especially when traveling alone. Don’t be afraid to casually chat with the hotel bartender or smile at other tourists you see while out and about. Maybe you can link up with another group of people to go to dinner or a local tour with. I find that when people are on vacation they are much more open to meeting new people and making “fast friends”.

Stay Healthy - Pack your gym shoes and plan to workout on your trip! Even if your hotel doesn’t have a fitness center there are options. a) Bring workout DVDs to play on your laptop b) Download workouts on your smartphone or tablet c) Go for a walk outside.

*Bonus: Create a Bucket list – Make a list of all the travel destinations you want to experience. Your very own travel bucket list. This is a great motivator to move you from dreaming to planning that perfect trip!

The delays and downtime of traveling can be annoying but can also be an advantage.

Check out these three quick tips to remain productive while you travel:

1. Catch up on reading - When you are delayed at an airport for hours or sitting in a hotel room you have to find something to do to avoid boredom! Getting a chance to catch up on reading is becoming my favorite part of traveling. When you are home and caught up in the daily tasks of work, family and managing life, the simple pleasures such as the joy of reading can take a backseat. Instead of playing on social media while you sit at the airport you can use this time to read the latest edition of your favorite magazine or book your friend keeps recommending.

2. Clean up email - Like most people my email inbox is always insane! Between personal, work, blogging and event planning I have 6 email accounts that I am trying to manage on a daily basis. I'm always overwhelmed trying to sift through unwanted newsletters, coupons and invites. So when I'm sitting at an airport gate or in-flight I use this time to clean out my emails. Make the most use of this down time by getting organized. Trust me you will feel accomplished when the unread items in your email read: ZERO :-)

*Smarter Tip: Don't connect to Wi-Fi. Delete emails from your tablet or Outlook mailbox in the offline mode to avoid the distraction of incoming mail.

3. Clear out clutter - Similar to my email I also find my purse, wallet, work/travel bag, notebook also cluttered and unorganized. During the downtime you have during travel it's a good time to start cleaning this stuff out. Sometimes I will sit in the hotel and go through all my receipts and random papers in my purse and clear them out.
Just dump everything out on the bed and go for it!

I spent this past New Year’s Eve holiday in one of my favorite cities, New Orleans!

This was my third time in the “Big Easy” and it was a fabulous time as always!

From the food, the music, atmosphere and rich culture all around you are always guaranteed a great time in the “most unique” city in America!

Hang out in the French Quarter - The bars around Bourbon St., boutique shopping, specialty shops and all the fine New Orleans cuisine can be found in and around this historic area.
Have a “Hand Grenade” - One of New Orleans most famous STRONG drinks can be found at any of the Tropical Isle locations on Bourbon St. Be careful it only takes one!
Stroll down St Charles Ave. and the Garden District - This beautiful and historic district is located in Central New Orleans. Boasting antebellum mansions and manicured gardens this popular neighborhood is full of southern charm.
Revisit History - Take advantage of the many museums, walking tours, riverboat cruises and unique experiences to learn more about the rich culture and history.
Ride the streetcar - Get around the city in a historic streetcar, the oldest continuously running streetcar in the world. Take a vintage trip through the Garden District or down Canal St. for as low as $1.25 a ride!
Check out some live music - Known as the birthplace of Jazz be sure to check out the numerous jazz clubs and find joints showcasing the original brass band and second line dance style of music.
Cruise down the Mississippi River - Take an evening jazz cruise in one of the many steamboats along the Mississippi River. Most included open bar, buffet and of course live music!
Eat! Eat! Eat! - From crawfish, Po Boys and jambalaya to beignets and pralines I truly believe New Orleans has the best food on the planet! Period.
Hit the Slots! - Try your luck at the Harrah's Casino or the other casino properties in and around the area.

This past Sunday I attended the 10th Annual Chicago and Travel Adventure Show, the largest travel show in the Midwest. Over the weekend over 200 travel experts, tour operators, tourism officials and travel companies gathered to share knowledge and inspire us all to book our next vacation and discover our "dream trip". As a travel blogger I'm embarrassed to admit I knew nothing about this expo until the wonderful Beth Santos of Go Girl Travel Network organized a meetup. I would have missed out on all the expert speakers, cultural cuisine, travel deals, networking and of course all the FREE GIVEAWAYS!

Once I looked at the lineup of speakers which included experts Rick Steves and Pauline Frommer, one name had me rushing to the convention center,Samantha Brown, world traveler and everyone's favorite travel TV host! Long before I started blogging I loved watching the Travel Channel and following her adventures to exotic destinations, historic European cities and local destinations. Having a career that included traveling over 200 days a year, earned her the title of "The girl with the best job in the world" Seriously!

Now a mother to beautiful one year old twins, Samantha has slowed down from her heavy travel schedule and is now host of Travel Channels "The Trip: 2014", travel accessory entrepreneur and creator of her own travel blog www.samantha-brown.com.

At the expo Samantha spoke at length about having more meaningful and authentic travel experiences. She pointed out that we simply just don't travel enough as a culture. On average Americans leave two full vacation days on the table! As I love to do with my own blog, she shared from her past experiences and knowledge to inspire and encourage us all to travel more authentically.

Check out her 5 tips on how to travel better:

1. Get out of the past, put yourself in the middle of the present. Don't just focus on history and culture of European cities and ancient ruins. Destinations in places such as Latin America offer present day experiences and culture that are enjoyable and meaningful.

2. Go for a walk - "Put the map away. Don't refer to an app." - Journey off the beaten path, go to where the people live and be part of everyday life.

3. Create a ritual - Don't rush through a trip and become a victim to the time bully. "Find something to do every single day at the same time." Go to a cafe, park bench to read the paper or have a glass of wine at the local bar. Allows you to enjoy the local scene and zone out!

4. Embrace the mundane - Great travel moments are never in "must sees" but in the mundane. Everyday life in another part of the world is just extraordinary. Connect with the culture.

5. Talk to the locals - There are many ways to get to know the culture, don't be fearful of not being able to fully communicate. Learn how to say hello, please and thank you in that countries language. Be Polite

*Bonus Tip: Take part in the local perspective. - "I don't believe The importance of travel is measured in the amount of miles traveled, you can have meaningful life changing experience one or two hours from your home on day trips"

Search out for the "up and coming" districts and neighborhoods experiencing a resurgence. Don't just rely on the internet, get social and talk to people. Ask local immigrants where they go to get their country's food and discover new ethnic communities that make up the fabric of the United States.

Hit The Slopes! : Winter Soul Fest 2014

So I recently realized that in all of my travels to beaches, historic landmarks, sprawling countrysides and urban cities I still have yet to go skiing! Considering I live next door to Wisconsin which has plenty of ski resorts and the fact that I have friends in the Denver area this is pretty pathetic lol.

Last year I came close to planning a ski trip with one of my male BFF's but we waited until the last minute and didn't have our stuff together! So when I got the details about the upcoming Winter Soul Fest I got excited all over again!

Winter Soul Fest 2014 is the nation’s annual premier winter festival for urban professionals and this winter they will be hitting the slopes in Vail, Colorado, January 22 to Sunday, January 26.

I always liked the concept of this event for two reasons: Luxury ski resort accommodations and of course...the parties! I love the way they describe it: "Winter Soul Fest is – “a good time in the winter time.”

Winter Soul Fest attracts more than 1,000 urban professionals from all across the nation to play and party in the snow! “This event has rapidly become the winter destination for urban professionals regardless of ski or snowboard ability,” says Winter Soul Fest organizer, Craig Morton of Good Time Productions.

This makes me very comfortable because I posses zero ability and lack coordination:)

3 Travel Tips for a Chic Spa Getaway

Last month I headed to Scottsdale, Arizona for a spa getaway weekend with one of my longtime girlfriends. It was my first time in Arizona since I was a kid (road trip from Texas to Vegas included a stop in Flagstaff) and I was looking forward to visiting one Scottsdale’s many world renowned spas. The weekend was full of relaxation, indulgence, good food and great wine!

Here are three tips to help you plan a chic spa getaway:

Make it an all-day affair

We did our spa day at the JW Marriot Camelback Inn Resort, one of the top rated spas in Scottsdale! I had a full body massage and a body scrub; spent some time in the hot tub and sauna. We wanted to have some privacy as well so we rented one of the private cabanas poolside to relax in between treatments. We were served food & drinks and enjoyed the shade of the cabana on what ended up being a steamy Arizona day! We literally stayed until the spa closed at 7:30 p.m. :-)

You need to put in some major hours at the spa to take full advantage of all the offerings!

Pick a resort or day spa that will give you full access to all their facilities. In addition to massage services, make sure a whirlpool, steam room or sauna, salon and restaurant is on site. Some resorts even offer access to fitness and yoga classes and gyms. You want a resort that will be relaxing, private and have plenty of amenities for you to indulge in.

Unplug and Catch Up

Technology can have a way of taking over your life. Some of us can get so caught up in the “online” world that we aren't present and fully enjoying the REAL life when are in. Our spa had a strict no cell phone policy. So it was nice to not be bothered are hooked to a device for almost 8 hours. *Note: I did use my iPad to listen to music and my audible book while in the cabana*. I found that I was able to catch up some reading and rest during the weekend. I did update my twitter/blog a few times but outside of that it was nice to be away from the constant barrage of email, notifications and text messages that are generally a distraction.

Unplug from as many of your devices as possible and take the time to catch up on reading, writing or relaxing. It will make the experience more peaceful.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry

From the moment we landed we were in search for some good food and a happy hour! HA! I love to try out new food and sample the local cuisine while I am in a new city. One of my fellow blogger friend’s @RealTalkNic had already recommended we try out Cowboy Ciao and it was divine! We tried the house specialty chopped salad and an interesting dish: Chicken Fried Trout. Yummy! We enjoyed bottomless Mimosas and Bellini’s at Sunday brunch and sampled some great local wines at SuVino Winery.

Conversation and laughs over a great meal always makes for a good time.

Chicago Event: Jet Magazine and Fashion Fair Say Yes to Life, Love & Beauty!

Last night on a rainy Chicago evening hundreds of the Windy City's most fashionable women met at The Pump Room to "Say Yes to Beauty" The exclusive "Say Yes" event hosted by the iconic Johnson Publishing Company (JPC) brands, Jet Magazine and Fashion Fair Cosmetics was our introduction into the newly revamped Fashion Fair cosmetic line. Guests enjoyed complimentary "Say Yes" cocktails, appetizers and mini makeovers while DJ Kiss spinned hot R&B and Hip Hop tunes all night long.

The JPC dream team behind the event JPC Chairman - Linda Johson Rice, JPC CEO - Desiree Rogers and Editor in Chief of Jet Magazine - Mitzi Miller mingled with the crowd and shared with us their excitement about the refreshed cosmetic line.

The Jet Magazine and Fashion Fair partnership is all about "reintroducing Fashion Fair to a younger generation of women with bright new colors to match everyone's skin tone" shared Miller. The largest black-owned cosmetics company has been around for over 40 years and while some may think they know all about the brand, Miller encouraged women to "take a second look at the totally refreshed line" In support of the campaign Fashion Fair recently premiered the short film "Say Yes" directed by Ava DuVernay. Starring Lance Gross and Kali Hawk, "Say Yes" (named after the Fashion Fair lip color) "explores the power of the affirmative, and the beauty that blossoms from embracing life." I am looking forward to trying out the new line and saying YES to - life, love and beauty!
