Book Blowout Sale

Tens of thousands of books, sorted into 30 different genres and categories, will be available in an area adjacent to the sales floor. All of those books will be sold for 40 cents per pound, with no limit to how many or few you can purchase.

Go green for Homecoming with MSU Community Reuse Days

It’s time to clear out some space in your garage, attic, and basement before winter, because we're giving the entire MSU community a green option for getting rid of unwanted items.

Homecoming week, starting October 17th, will be our next biannual Community Reuse Days event, where all reusable items will be accepted from MSU faculty, staff, students, alumni, and retirees.

Typical goods include sporting equipment and apparel, non-upholstered furniture, electronics, appliances, media, knick knacks, and a wide assortment of other objects. Items received at the event will be recycled, resold, or donated to a non-profit organization. As with everything collected by the MSU Surplus Store & Recycling Center, sending material to the landfill is always a last resort.

This particular Community Reuse Days event will be the first time that e-waste (non-functioning electronic parts) recycling and confidential document shredding will be offered for free. However, it should be noted that the event is for individuals, not businesses.

Proceeds from re-sellable items will support our continuing increase of materials collected from campus and the community. The MSU Recycling Drop-off Center recently started accepting all colors of glass, and we hope to have solutions for recycling polystyrene (Styrofoam) and alkaline batteries in the future.

Donations will be accepted at the north dock of the MSU Surplus Store & Recycling Center from 7:00am to 3:00pm from Monday, October 17th through Friday, October 21st. Call 517-355-1723 for more details.

Landscape Plant Sale

Hundreds of plants will be available starting September 23 until they are gone. These plants need a good home, and now is a great time to plant!

MSC Smokestack Brick Sale

Thank you very much to all that purchased but we have Sold Out.

We do still have bricks from the base of the original Sparty Statue dedicated in 1945. Along with many other MSU collectible items from; MSU Sterling Silver dishes, Game worn Baseball, Football, Softball Jerseys, and much more!

Bricks will be $50 each and include a numbered certificate of authenticity signed by Cynthia A. Ghering, Director of University Archives & Historical Collections at Michigan State University. Proceeds from the sale of bricks go to the State is Great Endowment.

The sale begins Saturday, August 27 from 9:00am to 2:00pm at our store or online at www.msusurplusstore.com. Bricks vary in size and condition. In most cases mortar is still attached and small pieces may come loose in shipping.

As with all of our items, bricks may be purchased online and picked up in store during regular business hours by selecting the local pickup option the shipping section.The original "MSC" smokestack at Michigan State University's Shaw Lane Power Plant was demolished in the summer of 2011. About 400 bricks have been set aside to be made available to Spartans everywhere. This beloved landmark was erected in 1952 and was in use, supplying energy to campus, until 1975 when the power plant could no longer keep up with demand. The letters "MSC" were embedded into the structure, prominently declaring the Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science. As the smokestack was dismantled, a portion of the bricks were carefully preserved and left in their original condition. Some bricks still have fragments of mortar attached, just as they were when the smokestack stood sentry over campus. Each brick is a piece of Spartan History.

It’s Almost Time for School Again!

Welcome Week is quickly approaching, and it’s time for the students who utilized MSU Surplus Store’s Storage Services to reclaim their belongings.

There are two options for retrieving your items and containers, and, regardless of which one you choose, it’s recommended that you call us at (517) 355-0364 at least 2 weeks prior to schedule an appointment.

The first option is to pick up your belongings from the MSU Surplus Store. Storage is off-site, so we can either meet you at our location (just off of Farm Lane, between Mt. Hope Rd. and Service Rd.) or at the old Printing building (on the corner of Harrison Rd. and Service Rd.), as long as you schedule a pick-up time no less than 24 hours in advance.

The second option is to have the MSU Surplus Store deliver your items to you. We will deliver on campus or within 15 miles, and the delivery charge is $50. If you paid for redelivery with your original order, simply call to schedule a drop-off at least 2 weeks in advance. If you have not paid for redelivery yet, place an order for “Student Storage Delivery” in the “Student Storage” category and call at least 2 weeks before you would like your items delivered.

Whichever option you choose, please be mindful that there are hundreds of other orders, and many students are just as anxious to retrieve their items during a very small window of time. We are doing our best to accommodate everyone; the further in advance you contact us, the more freedom you will have in choosing when your items will be available. Free Student Desks - All Gone

We have given all of the Student Desks away. If you are still looking for a good desk we have a large selection of other desks that start as low as $10.
When students move out, professors retire, offices are refurnished, or anything on campus becomes unwanted, it ends up at the MSU Surplus Store.
Every summer, while most of the students are gone, residence halls usually get rid of an abundance of dorm room furniture. This is year is no exception, and the MSU Surplus Store has a few too many student desks sitting around—about 1,500 too many, actually.
The varnished-wood desks cannot be made into mulch, and they would be dangerous to burn, so, instead of dumping them to the landfill, the MSU Surplus Store has decided to give them away to the public.
Free desks will be available during normal sale hours, from 7:30am to 5:30pm on Tuesdays and 7:30am to 3:30pm on Fridays, until they are gone. Other dorm room furniture, such as dressers and beds, will be available for sale.

Bike Sale - Starting July 8th

After being pushed back once we finally have a date for our next batch of bikes:

Friday, July 8th, from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.

We are expecting around 300-500 bikes that will be sold every sale day until they are gone on a first come, first served basis. You can stop by and preview them starting on Thursday 7/7/11 from noon to 3:30. The bikes come in a range of styles, models and condition. Most prices range from $25 to $45, but can be anywhere from $5 to $300.

If you haven't been to our new building you can find the directions online including our hours of operation.

Student Storage

We are accepting orders for drop-off on 5/6/11 till 4:00 pm. You can drop off your storage any time we are open for for free.

The following rates are good for any length of time between April 1, 2011 and September 15, 2011.

How to Order:

Step 1

Determine what you will be storing and what containers you might need. We offer the following containers:

Hamper

With inside dimensions of 41"x27"x31" and 500 Lbs capacity these are by far our best value at $100 per hamper for the entire summer. These easily hold the equivalent of 6 boxes listed below. After you load the hamper it is secured shut with a tamper proof lock. Rent 3 get one free. Hamper.

Furniture/Oversized Item

We offer a flat rate of $35 per oversized item for the entire summer. This includes items that will not fit in a hamper such as: dressers, desks, beds, futons, couches, tables, bookcases, TV's, chairs, bikes, lofts, larger refrigerators and more. Oversized Item.

Box

Store a 24"x15"x10" box for $25 for the entire summer. The box is free with your order. Keep in mind that you can fit 6 of these in one hamper listed above. That's a $50 savings if you order the hamper rather than 6 boxes. Box.

Step 2

Go to the Student Storage section of our website and select your storage options. Be sure to adjust the quantities for the number of items you'll need. Pick-up is free from an MSU residence hall if your total order is $100 or more. If your order is less than $100 please be sure to add pick-up to your cart. If you want your items delivered within a 15 mile radius of campus be sure to add the $50 delivery fee to your cart. You may also drop-off and/or pick-up your items at our store during regular business hours.

Step 3

We'll contact you within 24 business hours after your order has been placed to schedule your pick-up.

Step 4

You have your items ready by your appointment time and we pick-up them up.

Step 5

Call us to schedule and appointment at least 2 weeks before you are ready for redelivery.

MSU Community Reuse Days

In celebration of Earth Day the MSU Surplus Store & Recycling Center will be hosting MSU Community Reuse Days for students, faculty, staff and alumni April 18-22.

Materials Accepted for Free:

E-waste and household electronics (see below)
Good, usable furniture (no mattresses)
Sporting goods including bicycles and exercise equipment
Books, magazines, DVD's and CD's
Scrap Metal

Holiday decorations
Knick knacks and trinkets

Free e-waste recycling:
Personal computers, keyboards and mouses, TV's, monitors, telephones, cell phones, laptops, VCR's, printers, scanners, microwaves, copy machines and small items such as coffee makers, vacuums and toasters.

The MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center will be accepting drop-offs from 7:00am-3:00pm Monday, April 18 through Friday, April 22. Unloading assistance will be provided.

All material collected will be resold, given away or recycled. Any revenue generated from the sale of collected materials will be used to help support and expand recycling services to the MSU community.

Community Reuse Days are for personal use only. Businesses are encouraged to contact one of the many e-waste recycling providers in the mid-Michigan area.
