20 Inspiring Outdoor Spaces From Our Green Tours

When we first moved to New York and were searching for an apartment, my husband and I looked at a place on the Upper East Side. It was the only residential apartment in a commercial building mostly occupied by doctor's offices and insurance companies. The interior was tiny and ill-cared for, with a crummy galley kitchen. But completely unexpectedly, it had an amazing tree-covered terrace off the bedroom that was almost as big as the interior of the whole apartment. The terrace looked out to the back of a row of brownstones, all private and well-maintained. It was an outdoor lover's dream. We ended up not taking the place for a host of reasons (location, price), but I often think about that terrace and how amazing it must be at this time of year.

When the weather starts to warm up and the trees begin to bloom, I am of the firm belief that people who have outdoor space are the luckiest people alive. As an urban dweller currently living in a 2nd floor apartment walkup, I am not blessed with so much as a fire escape. But that doesn't stop me from admiring other people's backyard gardens, rooftop farms, and patio lounge areas. (And from wanting to be their friend!)

April was Tempur-Pedic month in my Year in Bed, a 12-month deep dive into mattress testing. If you're going to try a memory foam bed, you've got to try Tempur-Pedic, and so we did. What did we think? While it confirmed our personal antipathy for memory foam in general, it was certainly more comfortable than the other pure foam beds that we've tried to date and much more exciting for Ursula, who loved the adjustable bed feature with the remote control wand. Bottom line, if the memory foam experience is your thing, this is a good choice.

We've been testing one of these in our office for the past few months, and it's a winner. Strange at first to have the top automatically open for you, it has changed the way we use our office kitchen and more easily dispose of food waste and garbage when our hands are full. An Elegant Make-Ahead Brunch for Mother's Day

This week I want to hand the spotlight over to our amazing managing editor, Faith Durand, who has a great story and recipe for the upcoming holiday:

"I spoke to my mother tonight, and I asked her if we were still on for brunch at my house for Mother's Day. "Well yes!" she said. "What do you want me to bring?"

I had to roll my eyes, just a little bit. Isn't that just the sign of a good mother, though? Always ready to pitch in and lend a hand? Of course, since it's Mother's Day, I am letting her do no such thing. This is Mom's day to relax — I am doing all the cooking.

But what to cook? I have been meditating on the menu for several days, and I've settled on something fresh and springlike, yet not too time-consuming. I want to make nearly everything the night before, see, and all of these recipes will let me do that. There's a rich yet light baked French toast, with a fistful of lemon zest and slices of eggy challah, served with a bowl of raspberries. There will be a spring frittata chock-full of radishes and asparagus. To round things out, we must have a sip of something bubbly, so I am planning a simple cocktail of elderflower syrup, lemon, and fizzy cava. Simple, sweet, and not too difficult — so we all can relax. But most especially Mom. It's her day, after all."

Did I Buy The Right Plants? A Plant Killer Starts Over

Some time ago I wrote about my knack for taking care of indoor plants. (And by "knack" I mean my tendency to kill all living things that I bring into my home.) But despite the soul-crushing experience of watching yet another plant die under my care, I was determined to try again. After all, as was so wisely said by a number of readers in this post offering advice to beginner gardeners, even the best gardeners started out killing a ton of plants. So it was with a renewed sense of purpose and a positive outlook that I walked into the annual members-only plant sale at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden last night. My goal? To buy the hardiest, hardest-to-kill plants there.

We're halfway through! This was our March bed, the sixth, in our Year in Bed. Room and Board makes really good home furnishings. They're solid, crafted with quality materials and long lasting value. They can, however, be a bit short on style and added creature comforts, and the mattress we slept on for a month was no exception. Their Encased Coil Natural Mattress was a firm sleep without any of the squishy top layer comfort that we've come to expect from beds this year.

When I met Sophie Demenge and Michael Ryan of Oeuf in February I heard that this bed had been in the works for a long time and was due out soon. Here it is: a great bunk bed, with the unique styling and eco qualities that Oeuf brings to everything.

Salted Almond Ice Cream

I know you don't expect to start seeing coverage of ice cream until summer arrives, but the truth is I make it year 'round. I also drink margaritas and white wine every month of the year, and I have been known to rock a pair of white pants before Memorial Day, so if you're like me and you're up for breaking the traditional editorial calendar rules, read on about the salted almond ice cream I made last weekend. I promise you'll be glad you did.

I'm lucky to have one of those commercial-style ice cream machines with a built-in compressor, so I can make batch after batch of ice cream with very little preparation. This makes for a weekly ice cream habit, using whatever I have around the kitchen. (Of course, you can make ice cream without an ice cream maker too; try this simple mixer method.)

Last weekend I had eggs from a farm (you read about that here), lots of wonderful grass-fed whole milk, but no cream, and a huge jar of almonds. The chocolate had bloom and of course there is no good fresh fruit for another month or so. It seemed logical to highlight the almonds, and to make it simple (no crazy Ben and Jerry's copycat flavors for me!) and toss in some salt because I almost always salt my desserts.

Otis, a lovable lab, was the first to greet us when we visited Ami and Sean's cozy home in Central Austin, but it didn't take long (like, 2.5 seconds) to turn our attentions from an adorable dog to the bold and bright colors of a stunning piece of modern art.

Solid, non-cheesy outdoor lights have gotten harder to find since Smith & Hawken closed and Martha Stewart left Kmart (that's where we got them at any rate), so I was pleased to see Resto going in heavy to the category this season.

While they offer five different styles, I chose this one for our garden for two reasons: 1. it's the longest and 2. the bulbs are a pleasing low wattage at 11w. 50' long and 25 lights per string.
