Being a religious studies professor means that Robert Baum is frequently asked about his own religion, to which he responds cheerfully, "I'm an Evangelical Africanist," a remark that reveals his "deep commitment to make sure Africa is included whenever we talk about the world." Running through all of Baum's work - whether teaching, research, or outreach - is a value on religious literacy, the desire to promote a better understanding of the world's major religions.

The Challenges of Aid & Reconstruction in Post-Earthquake Haiti - March 24

On Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. in Jesse Wrench Auditorium (Memorial Union), Dr. Valerie Kaussen, Associate Professor of Romance Languages & Literatures, will discuss her recent experiences working on Haiti aid efforts following the devastating earthquake of January 12. She will address what she sees as some of the challenges and pitfalls of helping in Haiti's reconstruction efforts as well as share her thoughts on proposed models for Haitian post-earthquake development. Donations will be accepted at this event on behalf of the Lambi Fund of Haiti.

Learn about Paid International Internships in China

AIESEC, the world's largest student organization, is offering Mizzou students PAID internships this summer in Beijing, China. Interns will be teaching English and working with children in various schools throughout Beijing. There are no language requirements, except for being a native English speaker, and it is open to all majors. The internship duration will last for 8-12 weeks. MU's China Night showcases an array of Chinese performance arts rooted in the more than 5,000 years of Chinese history. The program includes both traditional and modern Chinese performance: ethnic folk dances from China's diverse regions; vocal performances; ancient Chinese musical instruments; Chinese acrobatics; martial arts and more. This event is free and open to the public. Sponsored by the Friendship Association of Chinese Students and Scholars.

Lecture on the global climate change conference in Copenhagen - February 12

The University of Missouri International Center invites the public to a lecture titled "Negotiating Climate: Lessons from the global climate change conference in Copenhagen" to be held Friday, February 12 at 3:30 pm in S107 (Jesse Wrench Auditorium), Memorial Union. MU Geography professors Mark Cowell and Mike Urban will share their firsthand observations of the conference and discuss some of the issues related to science, advocacy, politics, diplomacy and economics that were central to the UN negotiation process.

1) Chinese Academy of Sciences fellowships for international scientists - In cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, IIE/Beijing is pleased to announce the following Fellowship Programs of the Chinese Academy of Sciences:

Visiting Professorships for Young International Scientists - These fellowships support collaborative scientific research opportunities in China for young scientists and provide financial support for individual young scientist: to conduct cooperative research at one of the institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) for 12 months, and potentially renewable for up to a further 12 months.
Visiting Professorships for Senior International Scientists - These professorships support collaborative scientific research opportunities in China for senior scientists and provide financial support for individual scientists: to conduct cooperative research at one of the institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) for visits of 2-12 months, and potentially renewable.

Applications deadlines: March 1-15, and September 1-15 each year. Scientists wishing to apply should begin by exploring research opportunities with potential collaborators within the Institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. 2) Grants for IREE 2010 Summer Research Assignment in China - The 2010 International Research and Education in Engineering (IREE) Program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and organized by Purdue University, is now accepting applications for the 2010 grant cycle. IREE 2010 awardees will receive a stipend (US$4,000 for graduate students and US$3,000 for undergraduate students) to conduct engineering-related research in China from May - August 2010 . Additionally, grant awardees will receive allowances for: an orientation program; travel to and housing/meals in China; plus a re-entry program. The 50 students (20 undergraduate and 30 graduate students) that receive the IREE award will spend 10-12 weeks working on frontier engineering research projects in university, industry, or government labs in China. Ballet Folklorico de Mexico visits MU

in the process of adapting to the American education system
would like to learn more about the American work culture and system
in the stages of exploring possible future careers
looking for a major

Message from Chancellor Deaton regarding Haiti

The world mourns the devastating loss of life and massive destruction that has affected Haiti this week. Anne and I were relieved to know that one of MU's faculty members conducting research in Haiti is unharmed, but another faculty member has yet to hear from her family who lives in Port-au-Prince. MU does not have any students enrolled from Haiti.

I am proud to know that many of you have already sought out ways to help the victims in Haiti. James Scott, MU's Director for the International Center, recommends the fastest way to send relief is through the American Red Cross or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767). The U.S. Department of State is also backing an effort that allows the public to text "Haiti" at 90999, which sends a $10 donation to the Red Cross. These funds will go to support the relief efforts in Haiti.

Please keep the good people of Haiti in your thoughts and prayers.

Travel update for international students and scholars

Greetings from the International Center! We hope that your winter break has been enjoyable and relaxing, whether you have been traveling or staying here in Columbia.

For those of you traveling abroad now or with plans to do so later this year, we wanted to touch base with you as you make your arrangements for returning to the US. As you may already be aware, the Transportation Security Administration has issued new security measures for incoming international flights. You may follow either of the links posted here to read more about these measures:

Wherever possible, try to leave enough time between flights to allow for any delays these new screenings may cause. Also, should you encounter any problems, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 573-882-6007 (during office hours) or the MU Police at 573-882-7201 (outside of office hours - ask for an international advisor and they will contact us at home). We wish you safe travels and look forward to seeing you soon!

MU students and their families came together to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving. They had all the old time favorites such as turkey, stuffing, and sweet potatos. The slide show shows them cutting the turkey, preparing dinner together and the large crowed that showed up.

Join Friends of Yirui Wei, MU FACSS and Columbia Friends of China for an an exciting night of entertainment. The Melting Pot Concert will feature music from all over the world and will be held at Missouri United Methodist Church. Tickets are $10 for the public and $7 for students. Tibetan Buddhist Monks visit MU and Create a Mandala

Tibetan Buddhist Monks are currently at the University of Missouri. After an opening ceremony on Monday, which included chants and prayers, they began to work for hours to create a mandala in Ellis library at MU. The mandala will be finished and destroyed on Thursday at Noon. Since the sixth century, Tibetan monks have been creating mandalas, an ancient art form made of finely ground marble.
