Why quality matters: the difference between a screenshot and a real download

If you have ever screenshotted an Instagram photo, you have probably noticed how soft it
looks compared to what you see on screen. That is because a screenshot captures the rendered
pixels at the resolution of your display, then your operating system compresses the result
into a PNG or JPEG. You end up with a downscaled, twice-compressed copy of an image that
Instagram actually stores in much higher quality on its servers.

Videos are even worse. Screen recording adds an extra round of re-encoding, drops frames on
slower devices and almost always strips audio if the video was muted in your feed.
Spector sidesteps all of that by asking Instagram’s servers for the underlying file —
the same MP4 or JPG that the original uploader sent up. You get a bit-for-bit copy of the
source, which is what you want if you are archiving, editing or sharing the content with
                proper attribution.

Downloading is a tool, not a free pass. Just because something is technically possible does
not mean every use is appropriate. We built Spector with a few simple ground rules in mind:

Use it on your own content first. If you posted it, you should be able to
keep a copy. Spector makes that backup workflow trivial.

Get permission before reposting. If you want to repost someone else’s
public reel or photo, ask the creator and credit them visibly. A polite DM goes a long way.

Public content only — always. Private accounts and Close Friends stories
are private for a reason. Spector declines to fetch them.

Respect the platform’s rules. Re-uploading other creators’ work to
monetise it without permission breaks Instagram’s Terms and most local copyright laws.
