Lecture by Prof. Angela Sorby

October 6 at 4:30 p.m.

John P. Raynor, S.J., Library Conference
Center

Did Louisa May Alcott ever fully recover from the Civil War? As a nurse and
a writer, she struggled to heal the physical and psychological wounds inflicted
by the conflict. In this session, we will examine two Alcott texts from the
Civil War era: the blackly comical Hospital Sketches and the
melodramatic "My Contraband." Taken together, they represent some of
the ways that the war challenged Alcott's (and the nation's) most deeply held
convictions and assumptions.

Dr. Sorby (photo at right), Associate Professor of English,
specializes in American poetry. She also teaches courses on
Transcendentalism, the Gilded Age, and the Beats of the 1950s. Her latest book
is Schoolroom Poets:
Childhood, Performance, and the Place of American Poetry, 1965-1917
(2005) and she has published two collections of poems:
Distance Learning (1998) and
Bird Skin Coat (2009).

Resource guide: Raynor Memorial Libraries has posted an
online resource guide with handy lists of library and digital books by
Alcott, as well as books and websites about the author, her period, and her
contemporaries. Find the

September 2011—Marquette University Libraries' Funding
Information Center announces publication of its 2011 Foundations in
Wisconsin: A Directory. This is the 30th production of the print
directory and the 11th year of the online
	  edition.

The directory is designed to assist grantseekers in locating private,
corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in
this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current
information available. Both spiral-bound and online subscription formats of
Foundations in Wisconsin may be purchased through the Funding
Information Center, located in Marquette University's John P. Raynor,
S.J., Library.

While the national economic downturn has had a negative effect on Wisconsin
foundations during the past two years, there are some positive signs of
recovery. The total number of grantmaking foundations increased to a record
high of 1,324 (with 67 new foundations identified), and the total assets
increased by 11% over last year to $6.2 billion. However, total grants fell to
$458 million, a 3% decrease from last year. A table in the directory's
introduction illustrates the 10-year history of grants and assets.

Online database
for larger view.

Foundations headquartered in ten counties account for 85% of the total giving
by Wisconsin foundations, with Milwaukee County topping the list at 25% (335)
of the total number of foundations and 46% of the total grants. Waukesha (118
active foundations), Dane, Outagamie, Brown, Racine, Rock, Winnebago,
Ozaukee, and Marathon round out the top ten counties in foundation grants. The
directory also contains a ranking of the 50 largest foundations, which account
for 62% of the total grants, or nearly $283 million.

Foundations in Wisconsin profiles include street and Web address,
telephone/fax number, contact person, officers and directors, donors,
financial information, purpose statement, application information, geographic
focus, sample grants, and grantmaking interests. The print format is enhanced
by three indexes: area of interest, county, and officers. The online directory,
with its custom-designed search interface, allows searching by keyword,
foundation name, officers, donors, city and county, areas of interest, and
sample grants. Search results may also be sorted by various criteria. A
demonstration is available at the directory's Web site.

package.

The mission of Marquette University Libraries’ Funding Information Center is
to serve the research needs of Wisconsin grantseekers. In the past year, the
FIC welcomed nearly 300 visitors and responded to more than 580 telephone,
e-mail, and IM inquiries. In addition to publishing and maintaining the
database of Foundations in Wisconsin, the Center holds the state’s
largest collection of information on private foundations, fundraising,
philanthropy, nonprofit organization and management, grantmaking, and
proposal writing. The Center, located in Marquette's John P. Raynor, S.J.,
Library at 1355 W. Wisconsin Avenue, is free and open to the public. Group
and individual orientations to the collection and to the grantmaking process are
held regularly. Appointments are recommended for in-depth research
assistance.

for digitization and presentation in its In the Spotlight
collection.

Inaugural ceremonies and presidential welcomes have varied greatly throughout
the years. The January 1928 inauguration of Rev. William M. Magee, S.J.,
featured an ode
written by poet J.D. Logan. Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J., was feted by city
leaders with an inaugural
civic reception and dinner in January 1966, shortly after taking office.
Rev. Peter A. Brooks, S.J., who took office in the midst of World War II, made a
brief
statement upon being named president expressing gratitude for the service of
veterans and offering educational opportunities to meet their needs.

The role of the university president has changed somewhat throughout the
years, but many functions have remained constant: overseeing operations of the
institution and providing leadership and direction to the organization; serving
as an ambassador for the university in local, national, and international
settings; providing religious and spiritual leadership for the campus community;
and inspiring constituencies to support Marquette with their time, treasure
and skills.

“‘Are They Ready to Hear the Truth’?: The National Park Service,

Tuesday, September 20 at 4:30 p.m.

John P. Raynor, S.J., Library Conference
Center

Mr. Halfmoon has had a wide-ranging career as a public
historian within the National Park Service (NPS). For the past two decades,
Halfmoon has worked as an interpreter, park historian, unit administrator, and
tribal liaison officer with indigenous peoples across the West. As a tribal
liaison based in Sante Fe, New Mexico, Halfmoon mediates between western tribal
leaders and the United States government. Halfmoon, who is a Nez Perce elder,
documents and preserves his nation's history and culture through oral
histories and he is an expert on the so-called Nez Perce War of 1877 and Chief
Joseph.

The event is the first of several public programs planned for
the 2011-2012 academic year by Marquette University’s interdisciplinary
Public History program. “The interpretation and presentation of American
Indian history is an important challenge for museums and historical agencies,”
said Public History program coordinator, professor John Krugler. “Despite the
best intentions of museum professionals, whenever a dominant culture
interprets the past there is a high probability for significant conflict and
disagreement.” Please join us for this presentation of American history as
seen from the perspective of an American Indian scholar. Mr. Halfmoon’s
presentation is sponsored by the Helen Way Klingler College of Arts and
Science, the Department of History, and Raynor Memorial Libraries.

The event is free and open to the general public, but

Marquette professors Angela Sorby and Sarah Wadsworth will provide context
and introduction for Alcott as an author who was largely overlooked until the
1980s. Not just a children's writer, she wrote about her experience as a Civil
War nurse, was a journalist, and a writer of thrillers. This opening event will
feature readers in period costume:

Marquette alumna Patricia Lynch (B.A. in Theology, pictured

Library Exhibit: An exhibit in the John P. Raynor, S. J.,

Libraries’ Department of Special Collections has released the
digital collection, “I’ll Tell You a Story:" Memories of Pre-Holocaust
Europe. The collection currently comprises 25 full-text transcripts from
analog tape-recorded interviews seeking to document Jewish life and culture in
the early 20th century.

The in-depth interviews were conducted in 1983 by a group of volunteers from
The Generation After, an organization of children of Holocaust survivors.
Professor Michael Phayer, a now-retired professor of German history from
Marquette University, provided training and guidance for the project. The
volunteers conducted 65 interviews in the Milwaukee metropolitan area.
Additional interviews will be transcribed as financial support is secured.

“Although all subjects were survivors of the Nazi death camps, these 1983
interviews centered on the richness of Jewish life in Europe during the 1920s
and 1930s,” according to Matt Blessing, archivist at Marquette University
Libraries. Interviewers asked about family life, childrearing practices,
religious traditions and holidays, social customs, education, anti-Semitism and
the Zionist movement.

More than 1,000 Holocaust survivors settled in Wisconsin, most immigrating
during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Survivors were from across Europe,
although a large percentage of The Generation After interview subjects were of
Polish origin.

Early in 2012 the online transcripts will also be accessible via Wisconsin
Heritage Online (WHO), an electronic portal featuring content from
libraries, archives, museums and historical societies from across the Badger
state. Marquette University Libraries is a founding member of WHO.

Technology Services to change login methods to use Marqnet credentials.

Off-campus users accessing electronic resources will encounter a new login

August 2011—Marquette University Libraries' Department of
Special Collections and Archives has established the Stephen Sondheim
Research Collection after acquiring a vast collection of materials relating to
the works of the Broadway composer and lyricist.

The collection includes books, magazines, scripts, scores, articles,
reviews, programs, compact discs, long-playing records, audiotapes, videotapes,
posters, window cards and other memorabilia relating to such musicals as
West Side Story, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into
the Woods and others.

The collection was amassed over more than forty years by Paul Salsini, a
Marquette alumnus who has taught journalism courses at Marquette for many years
and now also teaches "History of the Musical in America." An unabashed Sondheim
enthusiast, Salsini became interested in the composer’s works after seeing
Follies in 1971. In 1994 he co-founded The Sondheim Review, a
quarterly magazine devoted to Sondheim’s works, and was its editor for ten
years.

"This collection is a valuable resource for future Sondheim scholars, theater
artists and the Marquette University community,” said Stephen Hudson-Mairet,
chair of performing and media arts in the J. William and Mary Diederich College
of Communication. “The depth of information in this collection is fascinating
and enjoyable to examine, and it will be invaluable to future Sondheim
researchers. This is a wonderful gift from Paul Salsini to the
university."

Included in the Stephen Sondheim Research Collection (SSRC) are hundreds of
articles, reviews and features about each of Sondheim’s two dozen musicals,
revues and films. There are more than 600 programs and playbills from
productions on Broadway and elsewhere, more than 400 audiotapes, 200 videotapes
and 100 compact discs of Sondheim shows.

Salsini, who lives in Milwaukee, said, “I’m delighted that what has been my
hobby, even my passion, for many years will be available for those who want to
study the works of a man universally recognized as the greatest living Broadway
composer and lyricist.”

Archivists have prepared preliminary inventories for the SSRC and all parts
of the collection are now accessible to researchers, according to Matt Blessing,
Marquette’s head archivist. For more information about accessing the SSRA

August 2011—ProQuest, one of the Marquette Libraries' largest
vendors of research databases, has migrated most of its electronic products
to an all-new platform. In addition to a new look, searching in ProQuest
databases will offer new user-friendly and intuitive features, some of which
are listed below.

Some of the interface changes that make searching
easier:

Searching for full-image content

Searching across ProQuest databases by selecting specific databases or
subject areas

Identifying specific document types, including peer-reviewed journals,
dissertations, primary sources, and graphs.

Browsing abstracts

Saving searches

Citing and interfacing with RefWorks

Sharing results with others

"My Research" for gathering and generating citations

All of the Libraries' most popular ProQuest databases have already been
converted, including
ABI-Inform, American
Periodicals Series, Dissertations and
Theses, The New
York Times (historical archive 1851-2007),
ProQuest Research

In addition, most of the databases offered by ProQuest subsidiary Cambridge
Scientific Abstracts (CSA), have been re-branded and moved to the new ProQuest
platform: Index

		Abstracts,
Philosopher's Index, Political
Science Abstracts, PAIS International,Social Services
		Abstracts, Sociological
		Abstracts, and Water Resources
Abstracts. ProQuest databases and subsidiary company, such as
Chadwyck-Healey, databases are or will be scheduled to convert later in 2011
or 2012.

Marquette has opted to link the users to the Advanced Search screen; to
conduct a simple or quick search and to find a detailed description of the
database, click on the "Search" link under the database title. To assist
users who wish to learn more about the new interface and its search tools,
ProQuest has posted several guides: begin with the Quick
Start Reference Overview (8 p., PDF) or User

Featured Database - Oxford Handbook Online

A Featured Database

What are handbooks? Why would you use them?

Handbooks are advanced-level subject encyclopedias. They can be especially useful when:

You are new to a subject and need an intellectual map

You are an experienced practitioner in a field, but need a review of a common problem

Oxford Handbooks Online contains many highly regarded handbooks from Oxford University Press. It covers four major subject areas:

Business & management

Philosophy

Political science

Religion

The handbooks provide comprehensive overviews, as well as detailed analyses of the common problems and methodologies for the four subjects. Their entries are typically short essays, often of a standard format, and include bibliographies. Editors try to get the best people in the field to write on their specialties. The full content of each module is listed at the links below and the handbooks may be searched individually or as a subject group.

Similar to other licensed digital books, access is permitted from off-campus locations for current members of the Marquette community; more about remote access here.
