The Athens International Ultramarathon Festival 2019 drew to a close today with the culmination of the 1000 mile, 1000 km and the 6 day race. Weather conditions were not great this year with wind and rain but two finishers in the 1000 mile race with Pavel Zuk (POL) finishing in 14:20:00:14. Second was Nikolae Buceanu (ROM) in 15:19:46:36. In the 1000 km race Petri Pertilla (FIN) finished in 9:21:10:29.

There was a fairly close finish in the 6 day with Zdravko Baric (BIH) winning with 366.61 miles ahead of Sharon Gayter (GBR) on 360.40 miles (580 km) who set a new British FV55 record by over 55km. (Sorry about mixing distances). Third was Jaques Morel (FRA) who covered 356.05 miles. Full results (in miles and Km) can be found at the link below.

Race Director Costas Baxevanis announced a new event to take place in mid-October 2019, the 1st Multidays Festival, Athens, Hellinikon consisting of 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 km races. Further details will be announced on the race website at the link below.

The Athens International Ultramarathon Festival 2019 got underway on January 18th along with the 48 hour race. Current leader is Pawel Zuk (POL) with 1026km/637.53 miles ahead of Nikolae Buceanu (ROM) on 966km/600.24 miles.
The 1000 km started on the 24th January with two runners – Petri Pertilla (FIN) currently on 360km/223.69 miles and Mireille Cormier (FRA) with 212km/131.73 miles.
The 48 hour race started on the 18th with 25 runners and was won by Andrzej Radzikowski (POL) with 362km/224.94 miles. First woman, third overall was Fionnuala O’Mara (IRL) with 323km/200.70 miles.
The 24 hour started on the 19th January and was won by Vladimir Todorov Stavrev (BLG) with 226km/140.43 miles and first woman was Teija Honkonen (FIN) winning with 211km/131.11 miles. 16 women took part in this race, a huge increase on previous 24 hour events at the Athens Festival with Angela Terzi, Athina Xenoulh and Olga Kousi representing Greek women.
The 6 day race starts with a very small field tomorrow, the 28th January with some capable runners including Denis Orsini (FRA), Sharon Gayter (GBR), Mizuki Aotani (JPN)
The final event will be the 72 hour which starts on the 31st.

Jasmine Paris smashes the 2019 Montane Spine Race record set by Eoin Keith by reaching Kirk Yetholm 83:12:23. Having set records on the Bob Graham and the Ramsay Round, Jasmine was one of the favourites from the start and has proved to be a formidable athlete again holding off Eugeni Roselló Solé after running together for some time. Jasmine gradually pulled away after the Alston checkpoint, 194 miles into the route building an 8-9 mile lead. She is the first woman to win the race.

The 268 mile Pennine Way record was set by Eoin Keith (IRL) 95:17 in 2016 and he’s currently in second place with about 30 miles to go. John Knapp is not that far behind while Gwynn Stokes is a dozen miles behind John.

Jim Mann set a new course record for the 108 mile Montane Spine Challenger of 22:53:28. Finishing around 7 am he reached the finish ahead of the previous record holder Wouter Huitzing who finished in second place in 25:57:27. Howard Dracup took the third spot. Carol Morgan won the wome’s race 6th overall in 31:47:37 with Jenny Yeo taking second place and Jen Scotney third.

Joe Farnell of Edale Mountain Rescue won the Montane Spine MRT Challenge. Jane Hilton was the only female finisher in 51:31:36.

The Montane Spine Race 2019 got underway this morning at Edale in the Derbyshire Peak District, with about 123 runners starting the 268 mile journey along the Pennine Way.

Early frontrunners are led by Eugeni Roselló Solé, Kevin Hadfield and Gwynne Stokes. Jasmiine Paris is currently in second place overall with Shelli Gordon and Gabriele Kenkenberg the early women leaders. Theres a long way to go and everything will change.

Jim Mann set a new course record for the Montane Spine Challenger of 22:53:28. Finishing around 7 am he finished ahead of the previous record holder Wouter Huitzing who has just finished in second place in 25:57:27. Howard Dracup is currently in third.

The Running Festival Wychwood 6 Day Race 2018 got underway at 12:00 noon on Sundday 16th December with 18 starters.  The event features 6,12,24 hour races and a 100 mile race. Stefan Roodt posted on Facebook:  “Wychwood Running Festival 100 Mile Winners – Tobie Reyneke finished his 50th life time 100 miler in 22:56:24 and Cornel Metcalfe the first woman in 23:23:34”

In the 6 day, Reganald Crowster leads Frik Du Preez and in the women’s race Amanda Economon leads Pumla Mjoli.

At 55 hours, these were the top positions in the 6 Day Race.
