Future Recessions Prove Yesterday's Claim of Depression was Correct

Instapundit posts on the non-recession recession, noting that the Fed revised their 2008 economic growth predictions up:

Are there economic issues, relating to high energy prices and idiotic loan portfolios? Yes. But does that constitute a recession? Nope.

As usual, I will state that the economy is not rosy and that there are storm clouds all around. Also as usual, commenters will ignore that bit and pretend that I said everything is rosy. Go ahead. My comment policy cautions against making a fool out of yourself, but I'll make an exception and allow it in this case.

Meanwhile, Reynolds gets the same thing in an email:

The looming recession is not a fabrication of the election-focussed MSM. It is real, and it is scary...I worry that in 6 months, there is a very high probability you will regret your cavalier attitude towards significant weakening of the underpinnings of our economy--namely consumer spending, available credit and accessible liquidity.

To which Reynolds responds:

A future recession? Quite possibly. We're overdue -- and, of course, people who predict recession are bound to be right eventually. But a present recession -- much less one over the past year -- not so much. If there's a recession next year, it won't retroactively justify bogus claims of a recession last year.

This reminds me of a guy I knew in junior high who was a big baseball fan. We'd watch or listen to our beloved Minnesota Twins every evening, and in the first inning it would be something like this:

FRIEND: Kirby Puckett is going to hit a home run!

(He wouldn't.)

FRIEND: Tim Teufel up. He's going to park it!

(He wouldn't.)

FRIEND: Herbie, Herbie. Herbie is taking it to the upper deck!

(He didn't. End of inning.)

By the time we'd reached the fifth inning or so, my buddy had predicted approximately 18 home runs, none of which were accurate.

FRIEND: Here we go! Tom Brunansky is going downtown!

(Tom didn't, in fact, go downtown.)

FRIEND: Hatcher is gonna knock one out of the park.

(Mr. Spalding did not leave the park.)

FRIEND: G-Man is due. Next swing of the bat is going to be a mammoth blast!

(Gary Gaetti would then hit a home run.)

FRIEND: See?!? See?!? I told you he would! I CALLED IT!!! You heard me SAY he was going to HIT a HOME RUN! I didn't hear YOU predicting a homer! I KNEW he would!

And no amount of discussion would convince my buddy that his prediction was idiotic and that he was basically acting stupid. He'd just go "I said he would hit a home run and he did. I don't see how you can say I didn't predict it."

No Mocka Obama

Instapundit:

Obama is humorless, and full of himself. That would make him a great target for satire, except that his followers take the position that any mockery or criticism is racist. The prospect of four years of that sort of thing is the best reason I can think of not to vote for him.

Honestly, I think there are a lot of much more important reasons to not vote for Obama.

They're Still There, He's All Gone

U.S. troops quit remote Afghan base after attack

This is not how you win:

U.S. and Afghan troops have abandoned a remote outpost in eastern Afghanistan where militants killed nine American soldiers earlier this week, officials said Wednesday...

NATO confirmed that the post, which lies amid precipitous mountains close to the Pakistan border, had been vacated while insisting that international and Afghan troops will "retain a strong presence in that area with patrolling and other means."

"We are committed, now more than ever, to establishing a secure environment that will allow even greater opportunities for development and a stronger Afghan governmental influence," NATO spokesman Capt. Mike Finney said.

Omar Sami, spokesman for the Nuristan provincial governor, said American and Afghan soldiers quit the base on Tuesday afternoon. He said they took the district mayor with them.

US troops armed some police officers before they left, but the officers immediately fled after enemy forces entered the area.

Things appear on the verge of spiraling out of nominal control in Afghanistan. It's going to take more troops, and if NATO members aren't going to send them, you know who will have to pick up the slack.

Demise of the DDG-1000?

Navy Turns on Its Super-Destroyer

<div style="float: right; margin: 10px 0 10px 10px; width:200px;"
Burke-class USS O'Kane (DDG 77) heading out for RIMPAC 2008

Noah Shachtman:

The outbreak of common sense in the Navy's former fantasyland continues. For years, the admirals have been clinging for dear life to their giant DDG-1000 destroyer program -- despite the bloated budgets, despite the shady building plan, despite the fact that no one can come up with a half-decent reason why America needs the 14,000-ton, stealth ships. What was once a proposed 32-ship fleet was reduced to a mere handful, seven.

"Now, in a dramatic, behind-the-scenes about-face, the Navy is rescinding support for its Zumwalt-class DDG-1000 destroyer program, seeking to persuade Pentagon leaders to limit the program to two ships," Inside the Navy has learned.

It's difficult to believe, but the Navy seems to be coming to grips with reality. I wrote recently

A big part of the problem is that the Navy seems to want to live in imaginary land when talking budgets.

and while the budget craziness seems to continue unabated, the decision-making about what to do with the unrealistic numbers appears to be making a bit more sense.

Rather than more Zumwalts, some are suggesting that additional DDG-51 Burkes may be in the future. Others have even claimed that nuclear-powered DDG-51s might be worth a look.

As I wrote in that post:

I've never been much of a fan of the Burkes at all. Not as our primary surface ship, anyway.

But given the choice between a next-gen Burke and the DDG-1000, I'll take the next-gen Burke. Let's tweak an existing system rather than break the bank on a concept that is troubled at best.

Still No USS Montana

Navy Names Two Virginia Class Submarines

The Navy announced today that the next two Virginia-class attack submarines will be named the USS Minnesota and the USS North Dakota.

The selection of Minnesota, designated SSN 783, honors the state's citizens and their continued support to our nation's military. Minnesota has a long tradition of honoring its veterans of wars past and present. The state is proud to be home to 46 Medal of Honor recipients that span from the Civil War to the Vietnam War.

This will be the third ship to bear the state name. The first USS Minnesota, a sailing steam frigate, was commissioned in 1857 and served during the Civil War, remaining in service until her decommissioning in 1898. The second Minnesota was commissioned in 1907. On December 16, 1907 she departed Hampton Roads as one of the 16 battleships of the Great White Fleet sent by President Theodore Roosevelt on a voyage around the world. She continued her service through World War I, and was decommissioned in 1921.

The selection of the North Dakota, designated SSN 784, honors the state's citizens and veterans and their strong military support and heritage from the Frontier Wars through the Cold War and currently the Global War on Terrorism. Seventeen North Dakotans have received the Medal of Honor for actions in combat, including Master Sgt. Woodrow W. Keeble who posthumously received the Medal of Honor during a White House ceremony on March 3, 2008. This is the second ship to bear the name North Dakota. The first ship, the Delaware-class battleship USS North Dakota , was in service from 1910 through 1923.

I grew up in Minnesota, and it always bothered me that there was no ship named for my state in WW2 or later.

Of course, the Montana residents that care must be about near tears at this point. Both of these states haven't had ships for quite a while, so maybe a Montana is coming soon.

Don't Upgrade to Movable Type 4

I must say that about the biggest mistake I've made running this site was the decision to upgrade from Movable Type 3.x to MT4. If you're running MT 3.x and things are okay, I would strongly recommend against MT4.

I can't say how much of my trouble is truly MT's fault and how much is JaguarPC's fault. MT4 (usually) ran okay at first. Only a few hiccups. Initially the biggest downside was that my antispam plugin wasn't MT4 compatible, but beyond that I'd hit a few errors that I hadn't seen before and that was about it. But it got progressively worse and in one day in May it all went to Hades.

Today I hit multiple errors every time I try to publish something. If you try to post comments, you're also probably hitting errors. If you try to open a page on MO, you're generating errors. The process I have to go through just to get a post online is quite a joy. And if I want it to show up on the front page there's another process I have to go through.

An older MT3 installation on the same server runs just fine.

Stick with MT3.

I suspect that my host made some changes to something that don't play well with MT4. Fortunately, everyone tells me that everything isn't their fault.

Unfortunately, I'm swamped right now with some other (non-blog) projects and the error-ridden MO is going to have to limp on for the time being.

Abe to help in Afghanistan

Lincoln shifts to put air power to Afghanistan

Defense officials said Tuesday that the carrier Abraham Lincoln was moved out of the Persian Gulf and to the Gulf of Oman, shortening the time that the carrier's strike planes must fly to support combat in Afghanistan.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

One official said the decision reflects both the worsened state of the fight in Afghanistan and improvements in Iraq. Since violence is down in Iraq, U.S. defense leadership believes it is possible to focus some air capabilities away from Iraq and more on Afghanistan.

Also get the carrier out of the constrains of the Arabian Gulf. Though everyone loves to get all alarmed when we send a carrier or two into the Arabian Gulf, it seems unlikely that we'd plan to have one there if we thought the shooting was going to start.

Big Government Plunges Deeper into The Abyss

According to Rasmussen Reports, the Big Government Democrat Congress has charted the lowest approval ratings ever in U.S. history. Only 9 percent--that's right, just 9 people out of every 100 Americans--approve of the job that the House of Representatives and the Senate are doing.

Which, of course, is not surprising. Congress has proven itself completely inadequate to address the massive problems Americans are facing everyday at the gas pump, at the grocery store, and in their own homes. In fact, Congress' only "solution" seems to be to find a way to make things worse.

Down from 11% "good" or "excellent" last month. No wonder the Democrats are expected to increase their lead in Congress this fall.

Tactical Gun Shop Bleg

Murdoc is working on another article.

Now I'm looking for a couple gun shops that are either exclusively tactical or at least have a large percentage of their sales in the recreational tactical segment of the market.

I'm interested in talking with them about what they do, how they do it, and what results they've had with it. I'm more interested in recreational/sport shooting than in LE/military in this case.

If you own such a shop, know someone who works at one, or have a favorite, please email me with some contact info.

Blackwater didn't break the law?

Richmond County Daily Journal editorial on the story about Blackwater USA breaking automatic weapons regulations:

From The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City, July 2:

The federal investigation into a firearms deal involving the Camden County Sheriff's Office and security contractor Blackwater Worldwide may ultimately bear out what the county's attorney and a spokeswoman for the company have already claimed about the transaction: that it was legal and neither party did anything criminally wrong.

Yeah, but they still don't like it.

Iraq Timetable

Iraqi officials insist on withdrawal timetable

Iraq's national security adviser said Tuesday his country will not accept any security deal with the U.S. unless it contains specific dates for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces.

The comments by Mouwaffak al-Rubaie were the strongest yet by an Iraqi official about the deal now under negotiation with U.S. officials. It came a day after Iraq's prime minister first said publicly that he expects the pending troop deal with the U.S. to have some type of timetable for withdrawal.

First, it appears that Iraq is getting more and more confident that their military and police forces will be able to maintain security. They're probably not too far off base on that, though there's still quite a ways to go.

Secondly, the "withdrawal" being discussed here is not a withdrawal from Iraq, just from the major urban areas:

The Iraqi proposal stipulates that, once Iraqi forces have resumed security responsibility in all 18 of Iraq's provinces, U.S.-led forces would then withdraw from all cities in the country.

After that, the country's security situation would be reviewed every six months, for three to five years, to decide when U.S.-led troops would pull out entirely, al-Adeeb said.

There is nothing earth-shaking about this. In fact, our troops were already beginning to withdraw a bit from day-to-day city life in 2006. That, of course, is when things began going south in a hurry.

Our long-term plan almost certainly involves our troops from pulling back and providing reaction forces and a deterrent to outside forces. Though we would certainly like to lower the troop level, it's not going to get too low too soon. Nothing I'm seeing about this latest announcement seems to alter that at all.

More on the Canadian Leopards with slat armor

Last week I posted some pics of Canadian armor in Afghanistan and noted that the tanks had slat armor but the LAVs did not. Got this message from a reader:

The tanks in Afstan are German Army tanks, borrowed to cover the period until the refurbished tanks purchased from the Dutch are delivered. The 2A6s we've borrowed have the new anti-mine mods and are otherwise known as the 2A6EM. In effect, the Canadian Army is field-testing the Leo2's latest mods for the German Army/KMW in return for a low rental fee. In the process, we can confirm which mods we wish for our soon to be delivered Leo2s from the Dutch. And there are probable maintenance benefits we are receiving from KMW. Thus the slat armour on the Leos but not the LAVs.

I read about the deal to buy some Dutch tanks, but I was unaware that the Canadians were using German tanks temporarily. It actually seems to be a reasonable plan.

It appears that Murdoc was not one of the finalists for the Para USA summer camp at Blackwater USA with Todd Jarrett.
Lowering the Recruiting Age

Al Qaeda Expanding Recruitment Of Children

Al Qaeda has successfully established a network for recruiting boys as young as 12 from across central Asia as it seeks new volunteers to enlarge its team of prospective suicide bombers and militants fighters, senior security officials from the Middle East have revealed to CBS News.

News of al Qaeda venturing into the former Soviet central Asian republics with a population that has a largely Muslim heritage marks a significant addition to reports earlier this year that the hardline group had recruited young boys in the Pak-Afghan border region.

Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are two of the nations where they appear to have had more success.

Whether this is a sign that AQ is getting a bit desperate for recruits or merely a new strategy to expand the war, it promises to lead to more horrific confrontations between professional soldiers and kids on the battlefields and streets of this world war.

'Not wanting to put any time frames on it'

Pentagon to outline new tanker strategy 'very soon'

Defense Secretary Robert Gates may "very soon" announce his new strategy for buying aerial refueling tankers, spokesman Bryan Whitman said Thursday.

Whitman declined to say when the announcement would come or whether it would be before a hearing scheduled for Thursday by a House Armed Services Committee panel examining the tanker program.

While I don't really think that it's absolutely crucial to get the new tankers in the air, it's also important to recognize how long it will actually take to begin production and transition over once the program (whatever program it ends up being) gets the green light.

I've been blogging about the tanker deal for five years. New tankers in the air actually seem farther out today than they did in 2003.

Cpl. Kevin Wilcox, a native of Clarksville, Tenn., pulls security while patrolling through the western Baghdad neighborhood of Hurriyah June 29. Soldiers continue to make a positive impact in Hurriyah, ensuring constant security for the Iraqi citizens with daily patrols throughout the muhallahs. Wilcox serves as a team leader with 1st Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Multi-National Division - Baghdad.

Note the straight 20 round mag, something I'm not sure I've seen in a photo of US troops in Iraq.

Does anyone out there use the straight 20 rounders? Some claim that they're more reliable than the curved 30 or 20 rounders, but others say that good curved mags with good springs and followers are just as reliable.

Thursday Linkzookery - 03 Jul 2008

Special Thursday edition due to the holiday.

Surprising fact: Half of gun deaths are suicides
IN THE MAIL: Crush the Cell

Recently received Crush the Cell: How to Defeat Terrorism Without Terrorizing Ourselves by Michael A. Sheehan:

Written by a man who is arguably the country's most authoritative voice on counterterrorism, Crush the Cell demolishes, with simple logic, the edifice of false "terror punditry" that has been laid, brick by brick, since 9/11. A veteran of special ops, international diplomacy, and bruising clashes with federal law enforcement agencies, Michael Sheehan delivers in this book a two-part message: First, that we've wasted-and are continuing to waste-billions of dollars on the wrong protective measures, and second, that knowing the bad guys' next move is paramount.

Somewhere in America, Sheehan maintains, are a number of terrorist cells, their members' heads filled with schemes of mayhem and destruction. Motivated not, as some believe, by feelings of disenfranchisement, disdain for freedom, or economic envy but by a compelling ideological hatred, these individuals plot not just terror but paralyzing terror-the kind that can shut down a country.

Unwittingly aiding and abetting them are many (but not all) "terror experts" and members of the media who, for reasons that are partly self- serving, rate the bad guys' capabilities far higher than they are, playing into terrorists' hands with their hype. Spurred by the pundits' inflated assessments, legislation follows that drains billions from taxpayers' pockets and pours money into a bloated Washington bureaucracy championing needless programs.

Here, Sheehan shows why defensive fortresses don't work, but offensive operational intelligence does. He also peels back the mystery surrounding terrorist cells, portraying them as, typically, a group of bumblers searching for a charismatic leader who has what it takes to conduct a complex symphony of violence. Sharing time in the narrative spotlight are not just agents of al Qaeda, but also frighteningly destructive lone wolves, cults, and radical movements.

Are you kidding me?

The painting depicts a dog wearing a stars-and-stripes blindfold and surrounded by a ring of seven stars. [Artist Nathan] Janes explains that, "The stars represent World Trade Center Building Seven, which mysteriously fell on September 11 even though it was not hit by an airplane nor sustained any major fires or damage from the collapse of WTC Buildings One and Two." The patriotic blindfold represents the apprehension that many Americans have in accepting that the government could be capable of intentionally harming its citizens. Also depicted in the painting is the 'All Seeing Eye' and stealth bombers, which Janes says represent the power that the government has seized over the American people in modern times.

Sacrifice

You can't make this stuff up:

More than 2,000 city workers have been called up to serve in Iraq or Afghanistan since 9/11, costing the city $65 million, Rep. Anthony Weiner said yesterday.

When municipal workers who are military reservists are called up for active duty, the city makes up the difference in salary.

Since 2001, city workers on military leave missed a total of 700,000 days of work, said Weiner (D-Brooklyn/Queens).

"For every police officer taken off the streets of New York to serve in Fallujah, New York taxpayers are footing the bill," he said.

He proposed a $40 billion federal revenue-sharing bill that would include aid for US cities that lose manpower due to military leaves.

Some city 1,191 cops and 251 firefighters are among the 2,082 municipal workers have been called up since 2001, Weiner said.

Currently there are 488 city workers on military leave.

"It's time that the military reimburse New York for its sacrifice," Weiner said.

The NY Post tends to be a little sensationalist at times, but if this is true Weiner is a moron. (Via Military Motivator)

What a Rush

I don't listen to Rush Limbaugh very much (well, okay, barely ever) but I find this astoundingly humorous:

Limbaugh has signed a stunning mega contract renewal deal with Premiere Radio Networks and parent company Clear Channel Communications.

Said to be Limbaugh's most lucrative deal ever by far, the new agreement runs through 2016 and includes a previously unheard-of nine figure signing bonus. For those of you in Rio Linda, that means more than $100 million, upfront.

Obviously, Rush brings in a lot of listeners. Clear Channel probably suspects that an Obama victory this fall will just drive Limbaugh's numbers even higher.

That's got to drive a lot of Lefites absolutely nucking futs.

Speaking of nucking futs, check out some of the comments on that post:

Premiere I suppose feel that his 80+ year old demographics are worth 9 figures. Do his listeners even operate without a life support machine attached to them?

I once ran a campaign on the Rush "enemy of America, enemy of freedom" pill-poppimg, hooker soliciting Limbaugh program. The esponse was horrible, worst wast of $500,000 ever. Are the people at premiere on heroin?

Seriously sho listens to this filthy degenerate? Benson? that appears to be all. Radio is a dead medium. I hope premiere goes 100% bankrupt and Limbaugh deserves to have a stroke. The worst enemy of America.

and

Rush is a horrible person, Brian. Anyone with decency would hate him. He is one of the few people I find acceptable to want dead. Limbaugh and Bin Laden. Nothing wrong with wanting him to drop dead, praying for him to drop dead either. I think when he overdoses, you will see a world wide celebration. I personally would urinate on his grave on a daily basis. I would move next door to where he is buried, and piss on his grave over and over and over.

If Clear Channel pays this man 9 figures, they need to be shuit down, immediatly. It is time to shut down any group that backs Anti-people propaganda, Rush is an enemy of the people. Clear Channel, should be surrounded with armed citizens, and the executives of Clear channel assasinated, one by one.

Rush = Bin Laden and the radio station executives should be assassinated?

Nucking futs.
