Hell's Kitchen Pub Crawl
Long-time MurphGuide reader Steve Grau invites you to his 11th annual Hell's Kitchen Pub Crawl, which raises funds in honor of his friend Thomas J. Collins, who died on 9-11-01.

100% of the proceeds raised this year will be donated in his honor to the Thomas R. Elsasser Fund. The Elsasser Fund, founded in 1992, raises funds for the families of NYC firefighters who died outside the line of duty while active members of the FDNY.
This year’s crawl will make 9 stops throughout Hell’s Kitchen, covering pubs in the west side neighborhood from 43rd to 55th St. and from 8th to 11th Ave.

The pub crawl will once again kick off at Lansdowne Road (for the six year in a row)
Crawlers will start meeting at noon.
$20 donation gets you an official Pub Crawl ID lanyard which entitles the crawler to happy hour drink prices at each stop all day, all night; full appetizer buffet at Lansdowne Road (1st stop); dinner buffet at McQuaids (last stop); detailed map highlighting the crawl route, some swag, as well as your donation to the aforementioned fund.

11th Annual Hell's Kitchen Pub Crawl.
All of the times listed below are approximate, so don’t hold me to these. Feel free to go at your own pace.
I say 30-45 minutes per bar, but who are we kidding, it’s usually longer than that. The deal at the last bar goes until closing. My preliminary plan is to do the 50/50 drawing right around 9:00 or 9:30, just don’t hold me to that.

(1) Lansdowne Road:
Back for its 6th consecutive start, once again we will be kicking off at Lansdowne Road. If you have never been, you couldn’t ask for a better stop. It’s usually quite a challenge to get the crowd to leave. There are HD plasma TV’s everywhere, and the draft beer is some of the best in the city. Great beer selection, huge selection of Irish whisky and scotch (should you feel the need to jump start your day), great food (did I mention the sliders), and the owner Dan knows how to run a bar. Check out the ice sculpture on the bar.
Drink Specials: $3 domestic, $3 micro beers, $4 imports, draft or bottle.
The drafts are of the 20 oz imperial pint variety (as they should be). Admission also includes a complimentary app’s buffet, featuring NYC’s famous Scruffy Duffy’s wings, chicken fingers, mozz sticks, mac-n cheese bites (really, who says no to that) and the best sliders (mini cheddar cheese burgers) in NYC. Some folks show up just for the sliders. The buffet will be stocked from 12:30-2, so bring an appetite.

(2) Landmark Tavern: 2:00 – 2:45pm
Back in its usual #2 slot, this place is a step back to old New York. I love this place. Philly needs more places like this. This is one of the oldest bars in all of Manhattan. Try to imagine walking out the front door of the bar and being right on the Hudson River. Because that’s the way it was back in the 1800s, when this place first opened it doors for all the dock workers and longshoreman. The original bar is still intact as is a majority of the original floor. This is a bit more upscale then we’re used to (its more of a place for a nice glass of scotch) hence it being stop #2 before things get real sloppy. All of the drafts are served in 20oz glasses and the Guinness pour here is second to none. On a side note, the doors will not open til 1pm here, so don’t plan on getting here too early.

(3) Hibernia Bar: 2:45 – 3:30pm
Back for its fourth year (or for long as they have been open), you may recognize some of the owners from their days behind the bar at Scruffy Duffy's (a moment of silence please). Already quite popular amongst the Hell's Kitchen residents, this place is sure to be one of your favorites after the crawl this year. I make it a regular stop when I head up to the city. Plenty of quality draft to choose from here, but the Guinness is top notch. I guess Aidan’s days of keeping me off the wagon at Scruffy's have taught him a thing or two. And they have tater tots!! And Aidan, sorry about the timing, it’s possible to run the marathon hungover you know.

It’s the 8th year in a row for this Irish pub in upper Hells Kitchen. Real nice bar, great owners. Lots of dark wood, exposed brick. The bartenders know how to pour a pint here. The 20 oz imperial pints are the way to go. The owner Garry is always extremely accommodating and he’s happy to have us back.

(5) House of Brews: 4:15 – 5:00pm
Based on the feedback I get, this has proven to be one of the more popular stops on the crawl each year. You may remember this as BB Doyles from years past. Back for its 11th consecutive year, and slightly off the beaten track, this cozy 2 level Irish pub is located just north of the theater district. If you’re looking for a beer that’s out of the ordinary, then you’ve come to the right spot. The 100oz beer bongs are always fun, but the selection of beers (both imports and domestics) here is as good as it gets. Why not try something different.

Fresh of its rookie status from a year ago, she’s a nice little Irish pub in the heart of the Kitchen. This place has a great neighborhood feel. You can tell by the accents of the bartenders that you’re going to get a great pour here. There’s an extra room in the back for more space if needed.

(7) The Irish Rogue: 5:45 – 6:30pm
Back for its 8th stint of the Crawl, this Irish pub (are you picking up on the Irish trend yet) has a large selection of beers to choose from. Whether you want to grab a bar stool, or kick back on a couch, this is a nice after-work type bar that’s always welcoming. The food is quite good as well. It’s a popular place for soccer and college football, so if you’re feeling a bit claustrophobic, there are two floors. Be warned that this place is a huge Nebraska hangout, and they have a game at 3:30. Expect a crowd.

(8) The Pony Bar: 6:30 – 7:15pm
So you are 8 stops in at this point (maybe more should you have snuck of the beaten path). You’re in the home stretch. And you’re thinking about some food, I get it. Consider this place optional. It’s an all American craft beer bar. I just wish this place was open when I lived three blocks away. By the time we get there, it’s probably going to be crowded with regulars (for good reason). This comes to you from the same owners as Lansdowne Road and the old Scruffy’s. Pat and Dan know their business. If you like quality beer, then stop in. Otherwise, see you at the finale.

(9) McQuaid's Pub: 7:30ish – ???
It may be a little out of the way, but the owner’s hospitality makes it well worth the trip. Absolutely no tourists here, this “off the beaten track” Irish pub caters to the real locals of Hell’s Kitchen. The owner, Tommy, couldn’t be happier to have us back this year. And this is only one of two spots to have made the cut all 11 years. That’s impressive. Silly cheap drinks here. Think of it as an incentive to make it to the end. This stop includes a full buffet, so there should be plenty of food out for everyone to soak up some of the booze. We will also be drawing the 50/50 raffle here, so remember not to lose those tickets that I know you’re going to buy.
Drink Specials: $2 domestic drafts, $3 imports drafts, Real simple and real cheap. If you can beat that price, I’d say go for it.

New Bar: Cooper's Craft & Kitchen

There is a new craft beer bar in town: Copper's Craft & Kitchen.

Just opened this month by Tom O'Byrne and Colin Stewart (from fellow east village venues Dempsey's Pub and Slainte), Cooper's got its name in honor of famous New York figure Peter Cooper (of Cooper Union). Cooper is also another name for barrel-maker, and you will notice that barrels play an important part of the interior decor.
The focus is on craft beer, with 25 rotating brews on tap complimented by an extensive list of bottled craft beer. Some of the breweries featured include Ommegang, Stone Brewing Co., Goose Island, Blue Point, Brooklyn Brewery, Six Point, Lagunitas, Harpoon, Green Flash, Troegs. (and staying true to their Irish roots, Guinness). They will also serve infused cocktails from their specialty menu, such as marshmallow vodka, pepper infused tequila and pear infused gin.

The "kitchen" part of Cooper's Craft & Kitchen serves interesting snacks such as meatloaf and pulled pork sliders, Scotch eggs, mac & cheese, and mussels.

East Village live music venue Banjo Jim's is closing. After a 2 week reprieve, Monday August 15th is now scheduled to be the last night. The bar, named for the late Banjo Jim Croce, opened in 2005 in the space formerly known as Bar Code, 9C, Redbar & Clubhouse. Proprietor Lisa Zwier-Croce named the space in tribute to her husband, and the venue became known as a home to bluegrass music in NYC.

XSP, IMMRAM Events and Stone Street Tavern join forces to raise funds for Alabama Tornado Victims Relief. Hosted by Brendan Farrell, CEO of XSP, a financial software firm headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. A percentage of proceeds from Stone Street Tavern, Beckett's, The Dubliner, Burger Burger and Pizza Pizza NYC will be donated to a tornado relief charity.

The first 100 attendees receive a complimentary event T-shirt courtesy of IMMRAM and XSP.
There will be silent auctions and raffles, while a percentage of the proceeds from all your food and drinks will be donated to the fund. Silent auction items include sports memorabilia, a round of golf at Rockaway River Country Club, sports tickets and various gift certificates. Raffle prizes will include restaurant gift certificates and various other donated items.

Rumor has it that Howard Cross, former Alabama and NY Giants' TE, and Ron Greschner, retired NY Ranger defenseman, will be in attendance.

David Robertson Foundation presents...
High Socks for Hope Fundraiser
Yankees pitcher David Robertson will guest bartend tonight at Foley's to raise money for victims of the April 27 tornado in Robertson’s hometown of Tuscaloosa, AL. He will also be signing autographs in exchange for donations to the fund.

Foley’s will donate half of its proceeds of the evening to the High Socks for Hope fund, established by David Robertson with his wife, Erin, to help people who live in Tuscaloosa rebuild their lives.

All of David’s tips from bartending will go to the fund, as will the proceeds from photographs and baseballs that he signs at the event. There will also be an auction for prizes including Yankee memorabilia and a chance to have lunch with David at Foley’s.

Additionally, Foley’s will rename one of its top selling items, chicken pot pie, after the Robertsons’ and will donate a portion of its ongoing sales to High Socks for Hope.
Foley’s named menu items – including Nick Swisher’s Swish & Chips, the David Wright Sandwich, and the George Martin Sandwich – have raised thousands of dollars for the athletes’ charities.

Robertson has a rare chance to bartend during the baseball season because the Yankees have a day game on Wednesday followed by an off day on Thursday. He will be guest bartending 7pm - 9pm

A memorial for NYC bar owner Ray Deter will be held on Monday, July 11, 2011. In a fitting tribute to a man with businesses in both New York & New Orleans, a N'awlins style second line march will kick of at 7:30pm at Ray's bar, d.b.a. in the East Village. According to d.b.a.'s facebook page, everyone is asked to bring a candle (large enough to last the march). If you would like, you are also welcome to bring an umbrella or a tambourine. Ladies are asked to bring a white handkerchief.

The New York nightlife community lost a giant, as Ray Deter, owner of the bars called d.b.a., has succumbed to the injuries he sustained in an auto-bicycle accident on Monday.

Today on the d.b.a. Brooklyn facebook page, Catherine, Ray's wife posted:
"Thanks so much for everyone's kind words and support for me and the boys....Ray will no longer be with us after this weekend, but we hope our loss will give life to others. Please celebrate Ray as he passes on. Love to you all, Catherine, Jake & Maxwell xxxx"

Ray opened the first d.b.a. in the East Village in 1994, another in New Orleans in 2000. More recently, he added d.b.a. in Williamsburg to the group in 2008. Although d.b.a. is well known in the craft beer community as a great beer bar, Ray was also very proud of their quality whiskey, bourbon and tequila collections. Hence, the bars' website URL was DrinkGoodStuff.com.

He was the co-host (along with Jimmy Carbone of Jimmy's No. 43) of Beer Sessions Radio, heard every Tuesday night at 5pm on the Heritage Radio Network. They described it as an audio ale salon exploring every aspect of the craft beer world. As part of their Good Beer Seal program, Ray and Jimmy are also responsible for making July "Good Beer Month" in NYC, so it is sad but fitting that Ray passes at the start of the third annual celebration of NYC's craft beer bars.

Celebrate Canada's 144th birthday with this all-star celebration of the Great Canadian Songbook, produced and emcee'd by Jeff Breithaupt and featuring a stellar international line-up, including:
